CROCS ARE NOT GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT PEOPLE! Heads up! they'll be with us forever cause people choose to have ZERO fashion sense and wear these garden shoes with jeans, dresses (have you SEEN the atrocity they call "high heels' WTF.) Screw all of you Croc lovers cause they're ugly, bulky and make your feet sweat.

    Funniest. Article. Ever.
I'm sitting at work reading this, and literally had to put my hand over my mouth to keep from laughing out loud! I honestly couldn't care less what people are wearing on their feet, but this trend amazes me. I don't understand it and will never own a pair of these, but my 4 year old daughter loves them and wants to wear them everywhere so I try not to complain too much.
In any case, brilliant writing. Thank you for sharing your "demented obsessiveness" with us!

  • Posted By: jred1255 @ 01/03/2009 12:24:24 PM

Why are people so caught up in other people? You don't have to wear the damn shoes, no one is making you. Worry about yourself, go outside for a run and do something productive with your time instead of focusing your energy on a menial pointless crusade. Trends come and go and crocs will soon be gone. don't sweat the small stuff, go for a run.

Hmm, I wasn't aware of these. Just ordered 3 pairs -- thanks for the heads up, they look insanely comfortable! And I don't give a rats patooty what you think of my choice of footwear.

    Get a life.

Hey 212ch: The Japanese DID bomb pearl harbor. That is why the Belushi's line from ANIMAL HOUSE is hilarious...displaying his low intelligence but still being effective in motivating his fellow idiots to action. Douche.

Umm...212CH. The Japanese did bomb pearl harbor. That is why it was a funny line in the movie Animal House starring Belushi, showing that his character was not too bright but on a roll none the less. Douche.

Really hilarious!I never realised until now that crocs were so popular in the States! This fad never caught up in Greece. We still prefer our flip flops during the summertime or iside the house.

I despise crocs and have serious concerns about the mental capacity and stability of those that wear them, somebody must stop these people before someone gets hurt.

  • Posted By: Antoine @ 12/26/2008 6:49:50 PM

You should be concerned with more serious matters. Example: 4200 young American deaths related to IRAQ,
economy in bad shape, leaders who are dangerously incompetents ...........

I'm blissfully unaware of this, never heard of them until this article. Then again I'm not the typical TV-watching, mall-visiting American trend-lemming. And I only read Newsweek when I'm stuck in a waiting room for 3 hours.

  • Posted By: Bobbi Zehner @ 12/25/2008 11:51:16 AM

Reading this week's print edition of Newsweek,I stopped to read what it is supposedly one of the best-read online stories of the year. Seriously??? Well, I'm certainly glad that I bothered. As a result, I'd wager that I'm not the only reader rushing to buy more Crocs. Just out of curiosity, has the company thanked you folks for the publicity yet?

  • Posted By: packerbacker#1 @ 12/25/2008 11:36:52 AM

I live and work ina northern state. I cannot believe the people that wear crocs in the snow at 15 degrees! Then they walk in a building and slip and fall from the moisture on the bottom of their plastic shoes. Get abrain, people. Crocs are not all-weather gear!!!!

  • Posted By: alogan @ 12/24/2008 6:14:43 PM

How sad that you chose to waste your time writing this pathetic article. You point out that nearly every American has a pair, are clearly aware that your audience is at least in part comprised of Americans, then accuse them of "stuffing their Croc faces with ice cream and Doritos and giant sodas." And when you say "the rest of us have to watch," who is "us"? It doesn't make sense, if all of "us" own Crocs. It seems that you don't just have a problem with Crocs, but with all of the stereotypical "American" activities that Europeans have invented about us. Just because a few people live up to these stereotypes doesn't mean that everyone wears knee socks with shorts (& Crocs) and walks around eating fruit roll-ups.

There are so many really important issues to write about today. Please do something more useful with your time. BUT, if you have to go on another fashion rant, please address those DISGUSTING UGG boots that people wear with sweatpants, shorts, and every other article of clothing imaginable. I even see them worn in the summer. Talk about bacteria--yuck!

  • Posted By: Trailfoot @ 12/24/2008 3:14:58 AM

I have a joint condition that, among other things, has done serious damage to my ankles. Until I got my Crocs, my ankles hurt... well, nearly all the time. Now, they only hurt if I do a lot of walking.

If Crocs drop off the market, I'll be stocking up. They've been a miracle for me. Yes, they're ugly... but I'm willing to pay a price in style to get a less painful life.

  • Posted By: GraceMH83 @ 12/04/2008 5:55:27 PM

I think people who take crocs seriously are hilarious. Really? A pair of shoes with holes on the top? How can that end well.

First of all I would like to point out that the game you play with your son is slightly ironic. This is because if another father and son were sitting around, playing the same game and counting dweebs, you would definitely qualify. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Second of all, I agree that Crocs are ridiculously ugly. You yourself say that you have no fashion sense yet even you recognize that these are hideous. However, that statement is simply mean and cold hearted. It's the kind of thing you say to your younger sibling when you are attempting to hurt them. Example: " I know I don't know anything about soccer but even I can tell there is a good reason you didn't make the team". But your statement does NOT prove that you are better qualified to judge the fashion choices of countless Americans.
Finally, the people who think Crocs are going away any time soon are probably also the same people who are satisfied with America right now: the uber-optimistic Canadians you wrote about in "Nothing but a Flesh Wound". And, to all of the tasteless people who wear Dockers: while they too are an eye sore, we have yet to eliminate them from the wardrobes of America's fashion authorities so I wouldn't hold out hope that Crocs will disappear anytime soon.

    Dear Mr. Tuttle,

Your article was hilarious! I read your second article first, about the ranting readers and had to go online to search for the original. I have been reading all kinds of short essays in preparation for the GRE's and have to say, "What a Croc of Shoes" has made me laugh the hardest. Prior to studying for this exam, I was not extremely interested in literature. But your article inspired me to read on. It's a great example of what good writing should be: engaging, thought provoking, informative and, when it can, entertaining. Thank you! To the reader who said you weren't doing your job, your doing it perfectly!

  • Posted By: almostfamous2013 @ 09/28/2008 1:44:28 PM

I read your follow up artice and just HAD to find the first one. I think it's hilarious. As a person who also has a disdain for crocs, we have to make a stand against asthetically displeasing footwear. Even Ugg boots are better. Atleast they're not neon...yet.

Wow. I'm glad I'm not the only person on this planet with such a wonderful, offbeat sense of humor. I LOVED your article and now will remember to always read your stuff. You should think about doing tv or something that gives you a wider audience because you are a gifted humor writer. Great work.

I also read your follow up article and immediately searched online for your original. I was laughing out loud to so many parts that my roommate came in to see what was so funny. I'm glad you're teaching your son early. I have a strong passion against all hideous shoe fads that are popular around my school's campus. Please also refer to Wallabee shoes and Ugg boots. Ugh is right. I look forward to reading more by you.

I loved your article. I laughed until I cried. On the cover of Creative Loafing is a headline that reads "Don't wear Crocs" and other fall fashion tips. Seems on the money to may. Save the crocs for gardening as intended. Thanks for your witty insight.

OK.... when you said that you dont have the to right to judge i believe that you nailed that statement. I dont wear crocs and if i did it would be what i liked to wear. And, since this is America I do believe that we have that right. And, ya need to get you and your son a new hobby.

I dont wear crocs either but if you have not noticed this is america and in this country bc I am not sure where you are poople can wear what they want. It is not up to you, fashoin industries or anyone else to judge what poeple wear. So do yourslef a favor and get you and your son a new hobby!!

i would just like to say that this is the most inspiring piece of literature i have read in a long time. Much more interesting than any of Obama's tireless speeches about how we can "change" or McCain's elderly babble. Its hard to squeeze a laugh out of me but while absorbing this clever piece laughter was tumbling from my mouth.
Your writing, despite the popular *apparent* belief, is incredible. I was paging through the serious and sometimes dull newsweek until i read your response article to the comments posted about this one and felt the need to read your other work. I am excited to read your upcoming stories and hope that you continue to share your-to be thought-controversial opinions!!

This was pretty funny. I think the next issue you tackle is those people who like to wear "house shoes with socks" in public. What do you think about that? As far a Crocs go, they are cute for kids and maybe for the garden - but for $30 a pop I will pass to the "fake crocs". I still don't have any - refer to how miuch they cost - yet. I can't bring myself to buy them. I can't believe that CROCS donated their shoes with holes in them to provide shoes for countries were people need them. I think CROCS should have donated portion of their sales to buy people supportive tennis shoes that cover their feet and keep them safe from dirt, debris, and bugs......gee whiz!

OK - so they're not the most beautiful shoe to look at! Who cares?! Has anyone thought about the hundreds - no THOUSANDS - of people that are now wearing Crocs that were donated and distributed by organizations throughout the world to people that may never had worn shoes in the first place? Children in foreign lands now have protection for their feet when they walk to school - or walk to the creek for water or go fishing for food to help feed their families. Parents now have protection for their feet as well. Get a grip people - it's not all bad. At least Crocs is doing something worthwhile instead of sitting around judging other people based on what kind of shoe they're wearing!

But now I do. It is now obvious how comments for this article could have ranged from calling you brilliant and marriage proposals to outright insults. Therefore, kudos on a job well done. I wore them once to see what all the fuss was about, and I don't get it. It feels just the same as any other shoes. I think it's just a psychological factor. People tell you it feels more comfortable so you believe that it's more comfortable when really, it's not. Plus, they're ugly. Who thought of putting those holes on top of the shoes anyhow? They also make your feet stink. Seriously, my brother wears a pair and his feet stink like something fierce. Go on, smell your feet after wearing them for just one week.

I love this article and really love the one in this week's magazine.

Not too long ago, I noticed a woman walking around my office wearing these awful black shoes and thought to myself "I think she forgot to take off her gardening clogs before coming to work". Needless to say I was horrified that I soon starting seeing these shoes everywhere, even on the feet of some of my beloved family members.

They spent so much time trying to convince me that they were comfortable that I gave in and tried on my uncle's pair (what can I say, I have big feet). After walking from the living room to the kitchen, I realized that my beloved family members must have been under some sort of rubber-induced hypnosis because my feet were already hurting, not to mention already perspiring.

    DOWN WITH CROCS!

Not that long ago, I noticed a woman at work wearing these awful black rubber shoes around the office. I just figured she forgot to take off her gardening clogs before coming to work. To my horror, I soon began seeing these shoes everywhere, including on the feet of members of my own family. Matters were only made worse when they started ordered ones online with Mickey-Mouse shaped holes and then filling the holes in all of them with cheap little pins.

Thank you for your stand on these ugly shoes I look forward to your next article no matter what it is on.

Seriously, was this article published in Newsweek? I love fashion and I am the first to buy fashion magazines, but come on. This is not news, this is a CROC, a croc of crap! This is you, venting your opinion on a fashion trend gone wrong, although it may have been your ???assignment??? for the week. Now???.this is me venting, because you definitely pushed the wrong button.
I am not a croc-wearer and yes, I agree, crocs are ugly and should only be worn for gardening purposes. You should use your talents and write about something important. Try to make something significant happen in the world instead of changing what shoes people are wearing on their feet!! Who cares, and WHY DO YOU CARE SO MUCH?? They are just shoes???on people???s feet!! Maybe you should address such topics as 1) People on welfare that are still reproducing yet can't afford more children. 2) Cable TV and how they randomly take away channels but still charge you the same amount per month, ???but you can upgrade to receive those missing channels??? and pay more!? 3) The *** and violence on television and how society is accepting this crap as the norm. Temptation Island??? No wonder our world is going straight to hell!
Instead of writing this crap, get up on Sunday morning and go to church and pray for peace or at least write about something that really matters and get that published in Newsweek!

I go to college in Boulder, CO, where Crocs were invented, so I have got to be loyal. I know, you're thinking, "Boulder, right. Crazy outdoor/hippie central." It only seems natural that Crocs were invented here, by a bunch of guys who were looking to make a unique new boat shoe. Because so many people, especially college sdutents, here wear them, the rubber shoes probably look more normal to me than most. And I argue that there is a niche in which it is acceptable to wear Crocs, although it's not a very big one. It is actually very nice to toss on a nice comfortable pair of Crocs with sweatpants before you walk to class, or maybe for breakfast at the dining hall. They also work pretty well for low-impact hiking in potentially wet areas, because you don't have to worry about your shoes getting sorry and waterlogged. And I am all for little kids wearing Crocs - they're easy to put on and take off, resilient to almost any terrain, wet or dry, and kids seem to really have fun with them.

But I do agree that many people abuse this nice little niche for Crocs and wear them in ridiculous places, or with shorts and not long pants (hardly ever acceptable), or in the crazist neon color possible. It's those people, sadly most of the country, who give Crocs such a bad rap.

Oh, and by the way, I seriously considered getting a pair of those high-heeled Crocs. I liked to think of them as my "training heels," since I do have a bit of a hard time negotiating the added height since I'm already almost 6'. =)

    Happy Croc-Spotting!

LOVE your article. I love crocs, too. I have lots of pairs of them and will, no doubt, buy more. I love Dansko clogs as well, though. They aren't as colorful, (except for the pink ones!), but very comfortable. They are certainly every bit as ugly as crocs. But please don't recommend wearing flip flops to your readers! I cannot bear to see one more pair of dirty, hairy, long toenailed feet this summer. There's nothing worse than trying to eat in a restaurant surrounded by disgusting, naked, nasty feet. I personally do not wear any kind of shoes that show my cute little piggies and I take dorkieness one step further by wearing socks with my crocs. (Yes, often white socks. Snowy white, freshly cloroxed scoks.) Perhaps that government buy-back you suggested could go toward flip flops. After all, what do they cost, maybe $1.00 a pair? Much less expensive than a crocs buy-back! Meanwhile, I suggest you and your son count disgusting flip flop feet instead of dorky croc feet. In fact, since I could stand to lose a few pounds, I may start counting, too...it'll certainly put you off your feed.

well steve I have to agree with you they are extremly ugly and I would not be caught in something so ugly. I care about what I look like and so many people today do not care at all how they look in public, its a shame that people will wear anything just to be trendy no matter how silly it makes them look.

I have never been a slave to fashion...I wear belts and shoes/boots older than my 2 grown kids, and they are still comfortable and functional. Worse perhaps than that , I like crocs. They are the most comfortable, (albeit ugly,) footwear I have ever worn. With all due respect to the "writer" of this tripe, I like them, I wear them, and I'll continue to wear them until they are no longer available. (..or it snows here in Wisconsin) We also wear cheeseheads here, so go figure....

To Steve (author): You're obviously trying to overcompensate for something and are hyper concerned about what others think of you. It's OK, man. You're a good person. Whatever happened when you were a kid, it's not your fault. Here's a big bearhug and $29.99, go to Crocs.com and get yourself a pair of the most comfortable shoes on the planet in whatever color makes Steve happy. And, be well.

Not to mention his wife in matching wife beater and mullet and cut-off jean shorts and crocs, then the poor offspring of these fashion challenged nascar lovin folks are subjected to there parents mis-guided fashion non-sense. Finally, someone has said what I???ve been thinking! I can get on board with kids wearing and even adult women to a certain extent but guys, for the sake of your manhood, please stop wearing these things. Now, we need to get rid of those ridiculous looking slipper/bootie things called Uggs. That???s an appropriate name because they are f-UGG-ly. That fad can???t die soon enough for me.

I really dont think it could be said any better, sadly my family has been a fatality of the Croc fight. I am the only one left standing (in normal, soft, fabric shoes)! I can't believe people can put clothes on look in the mirror and not think they look like someone out of a toddlers Tv show that has talking shoes! I have never been against anything this petty (besides men in skin tight jeans)! Yes!! I couldn't have explained it any better. Who in there right mind would want to wear something that resembles a brightly colored plastic cup that you can puchase at any cheesy outlet store? Now they are making some kind of old lady sandels that people who buy and wear Croc's are wearing with calf high socks!!? Do they not realize no matter how comfortable they may be they still look like you are walking around in small neon VW Beetles!

I had to read this story after first reading the follow-up. LOL Too funny! A co-worker of mine recently asked "Would you buy a pair of Crocs?" my response : "Crocs? aren't those for nurses and small children?" LOL Call it diarrhea of the brain, I didn't speak before thinking and realized too late that he was contemplating purchasing a pair and I had just offended his fashion insensiblity. Crocs are definitely scarier than acid washed jeans and mullets...never thought those could be topped! LOL

THANK YOU! When I first saw Crocs, they were advertised in a catalogue as gardening shoes. I thought they were great for gardening and considered getting a pair. The next thing I new, I could not leave the house without being assaulted by these hideous, not-originally-intended-as-street-clothes monstrosities! Croc haters, UNITE!!

Hah! I came across the follow-up article first and had to check this out. (I enjoyed the follow-up more, by the way, but I digress.) I, for one, don't particularly find Crocs all that ugly, but for some reason I find them really stupid. (yeah, I know -- compelling argument on my behalf, right?) I'm pleased that you make a living doing what you love and are good at.

That was great! I hate Crocs, in fact, I make fun of my own mother for wearing them...and then there are those moronic college students that insist on wearing them in the rain - people, there are HOLES in the top of your shoes!!! I thought I was alone in this fight, it's nice to know I'm not.

I absolutely agree with you 100%! These shoes are a fashion abomination and should never see the light of day! Hideous! Disgusting! Then I look down- and what's that on my feet! OMG- CROCS!

I think of them as ugly children- you know they're not attractive, but you can't help but love them.

I find it amusing when I get "the look" from Croc-hatahs, finding consolation in the fact my feet feel great and I am comfortable, while they shift from foot to foot in obvious discomfort in their strappy little 9 West heels.

My 3 pairs of Crocs and I are laughing at your humor...... great argument.

Have you ever considered a writing career?

    tasteless athletic shoes.

  • Posted By: cgrant3992 @ 08/21/2008 7:50:37 AM

To all the croc wearers, THEY ARE GARDENING SHOES. Unless you plan on dig up a tree at the mall, leave the shoes at the house. There is nothing cool about slip-on shoes made of feaux rubber. The only thing it says about you is that you are too lazy to bend over and put on a real pair of shoes.

  • Posted By: amanda.elisala` @ 08/21/2008 6:19:07 AM

Wow. . . The comments below are just. . .funny. For a shoe, this has a lot of lovers and haters. I do suppose that it is a good investment for people with foot issues, however for the rest of the world- what is your excuse?

These shoes are ugly, and should be burned. . .that is if they burn at all. You would think from people's comments below that these shoes are a God given gift from heaven. Personally, they are ugly as f```, but I guess ugly things will always be out there- like fat men in speedos, emo kids, the fanny pack, bedazzled Hannah Montana shirts and grandmas that wear christmas themed t-shirst year round. These things happen. . .It just sucks for everyone else.

Thanks for this article- you made my day!!!

I can only thank you for your rant... I have 3 daughters, ages: 3, 10 & 14... The only one with enough sense to not actually leave the house wearing them is the 3 year old. She, at 3 years old, already sees how "goofy" these "shoes" really are. I use the word "goofy", because I believe he is VP of Product Development for Crocs, Inc. We (me my 3 year old) could hang out with you and your son on a mall/park bench, as we have spend many an afternoon bashing the pajama bottoms, muffin tops, too low rise pants and the Croc wearing abominations waiting for the Mommy and Girls to finish their fashion finding expeditions (shopping)!

  • Posted By: zaaroc2 @ 08/20/2008 8:53:39 PM

the best article ive ever agreed with this is a very funny article. and teachers are the biggest abusers of crocs. and you know what? all of the teachers are 80 year old women who can barely stand, so all peole who think that they are cool and fashionable by wearing these "clown shoes" then your welcome to hang out with the rest of the people who wear them, at an old peoples home or at a comic convention.

  • Posted By: fuzzyoreokitti<3 @ 08/19/2008 3:27:26 AM

Im reading the comments as well as the article and Im laughing at what some of you have written! I, at the tender age of 16, am looked down at for having COMMON SENSE! I knew a guy who wore crocs...he was also the same guy who blew up 7 trash cans at school after having put on a ski mask on RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE SECURITY CAMERA so as not to get caught. Actually, to be completely honest, I dont mind that some people wear crocs, because then I can look at them and feel good knowing that there are people who have a thinking capacity lower than my god-sister who has a learning disability(<--and has a good eye for fashion even though the only thing she listens to is music from disney...)

  • Posted By: aliciaC @ 08/18/2008 4:30:47 PM

I whole-heartedly agree. From the first time I saw these clown shoes I was disgusted. Who cares if they're comfortable, they look hideous. And I think deep down a lot of the people wearing them agree. It's just like with other trends--stainless steel appliances, Ipods, camera phones, etc.--Americans don't think for themselves. They just follow what everyone else does.

  • Posted By: azarashi @ 08/18/2008 3:04:44 PM

I read this article on the paper Newsweek, and I was disgusted. Newsweek, I can't believe you published this offensive and self-centered article. Very disappointing. If you hate crocs, don't buy them, ignore them, or just write about your hatred on your little blog. Don't just attack them on a world-wide, influencial and renowned publication like that.

Crocs is not a giant corporation, they are a rather small company that makes product they belive in, and they mean no harm to anybody. I think it is extremely unfair to publicly attack this company just because their product seems ugly to you. What a great father you are to teach your son to judge people based on the way they look, and to teach how to look down on people with little knowledge.

I hate these snobby, know-it-all but don't-know-what -they-are-talking-about writers. They are the national nightmares.

Have you ever worked in the health care field? Also, since you're so late, you'd know that they have many many many other designs. So, when you say crocs, my mind doesn't even register as those sandals with holes in them. Don't you think that the company would have caught on to all the negative reviews after all this time?

  • Posted By: missstake @ 08/17/2008 5:36:52 PM

I recently saw a story on TV about how crocs are not actually good for your feet, no matter how comfortable they may be, and i rejoiced that the dorks who wear them actually weren't getting the health benefits they thought they were. i am with the author on this one - crocs are an absurd abomination in footwear and make their wearers look ridiculous. try some dr. scholls inserts if you need to walk more than half a block.

  • Posted By: TheMIL @ 08/15/2008 4:43:56 PM

After many years of not being able to walk more then half a block I can at last walk as far as I want with no foot pain. Thank you Crocs. My first pair were a gift now I own many pairs and all the rest of of $100+ shoes in my closet just gather dust. Beauty is in something that works for so many.

(continued)........Shoot me now. K-Swiss, white gym shoes of any kind worn non-jokingly, SKETCHERS, sweet Jesus, the company that rips EVERYTHING: first the Diesel men's leather bowler, then Crocs, now Sanuks (my one true love...) and have you SEEN their God-awful commercials? Dudes seriously think they can get laid wearing Sketchers? Maybe, by some equally tasteless hoe, also donning Sketchers. God bless Crocs, their quirkiness, their unapologetic goofiness, their fervent and in-you-face lightheartedness. They are the new shoe of rebellion - forget lame combat boots, they've been totally accepted and show up on lame
"fashonistas". What I would truly appreciate would be a solid, block-type Croc. Like a rectangular brick that you can place your foot into, that maybe glow in the dark as well. The most modern-artsy, obtrusive, in-your-face you Dockers-clad-lame type of shoe. The least passive, least I-wish-I-could-blend-into-the-walls, least pretentious, most high-art to the point where Vogue would want to feature it but it would snub Vogue because

because it's sooo much better than anything freak-face Wintour could ever grasp her predictable head around.

Viva les Crocs, die les lames.

  • Posted By: alexette @ 08/15/2008 12:42:29 PM

I just read this (pared-down) article in my paper Newsweek and was disgusted beyond whatever Republican lie-du-jour was feartured that week. The author wears pleated Dockers, 'nuff said. Are Crocs classically beautiful? No, I suppose, they lack the sloping nose and graceful lines of Greco-Roman classical beauty. But, they are beautiful, in an abstract, conceptual, modern way; in a ridiculous, absurd way that only a puffy, solid-colored foam orb, vaguely resembling a Dutch clog, encasing one's foot. They're lighthearted funniness is especially welcome on grumpy old men, its truly endearing. But now, to the beef of my argument. Consider the bulk of the Crocs demographic: the clueless, careless suburban "plopper". If it weren't for quirky old Crocs, these silly people would be donning (good God, brace yourselves): solid-white K-SWISS. Shoot

As a person who has had 2 reconstructive surgeries on each foot, the first when I was 13 years old and the second at 40, now at 50 I am very thankful for Crocs. I can actually buy a pair of shoes, walk out of the store and wear them...and not have had to pay up toward and over $100. I like the fact that I can afford multiple pairs. I like the wild colors and for a while, at least was able to wear what was "popular." I hope they never go out of business; if they do, I'll have to try to buy up whatever remains that I can find. It is offensive to me that people feel they can put their judgment of style so viciously on others. I'm a self-proclaimed croc-aholic, and will continue to enjoy them whether or not others, most of whom I don't know, label me as a dork. I have a photo which might help explain why I can't put my poor, distorted feet into the shoes that others say are cool.

  • Posted By: deborahsteinbergdotcom @ 08/06/2008 4:32:20 PM

Me thinks that some are spending far too great a time bashing Mr. Tuttle. Guess it's what happens when something as emotionally high-charged and controversial as a critique of Crocs shoes make it to publication.

Re-e-e-lax. Nowadays, there are dozens of shoes to assist Diabetics in walking comfortably although, in essence, no shoe is perfectly-made to suit our unique feet. Shoes are like jeans!

I feel about Crocs the same way that I do about Whole Foods. Not only are the 2 companies a financial rip-off, but they are only meant to suit a temporary, trendy image. Crocs knows this, and that is why it has established a variety of styles... to suit the ever-changing, refreshment-hungry fashion public (not Diabetics)!

Fashion trends are brief and usually uncomfortable to begin with unless we get lucky. Why? Because styles tend to suit particular figures, sizes and heights, only. In fact, they are presented attractively (upon the very "particular figures, sizes and heights") to make a sale to you and me. And, unfortunately, many of us don't possess the funds (or fame) with which to customize our garb so we result in looking a little ridiculous. And Mr. Tuttle reserves the right to rant about this fact.

Fashion is not for everyone. Neither are Crocs. So, let's please allow Mr. Tuttle his spotlight for it is hilariously well-deserved.

No one need be intelligent to read Newsweek articles, just interested. And if one is uninterested in reading Newsweek articles, one needn't be on the Newsweek site.

  • Posted By: SeriouslySad @ 08/06/2008 3:29:55 PM

The first mistake is assuming that intelligent people read Newsweek. I mean, Newsweek is for those of feeble mind. Even so, it is highly regretful that this story made it through the editing stage...

The writer is obviously not a good one, he works for Newsweek... [see above]

The fact that people don't like Crocs is unoriginal, but you have to create reader interest [read: make money] somehow, right? So, why not jump on the Crocs bashing bandwagon? All the cool kids are doing it.

Mr. Tuttle basically shows the nation that he feels it is ok, for himself and his child, to judge people based on the way they look. What year is this again?

Mr. Tuttle indicates that he has no fashion sense... so why is he blathering on about a fashion phenom? See: generating reader interest, i.e. making money, above

He fails to mention that the shoes HELP people with foot and back problems, and are a heaven-sent for some. He fails to mention that some of the shoes were recently approved by Medicare and Medicaid for diabetics, and some of the shoes are award winners from the American Podiatric Association. But... oh yeah, I forgot, Mr. Tuttle would have us hating those lesser than us, in taste and in health.

Forget about the shoes, the article is in very poor taste and is a mockery of people based on their shoe preference. Have you no shame, Newsweek?

  • Posted By: Sunny718 @ 08/06/2008 2:36:08 PM

Even worse, Im sure they're not biodegradable, so when everyone realizes how hidious they are and decides to throw them out, those millions and millions of pairs of Crocs will sit in our landfills and help pollute our planet for the next million years!!

They are ugly as sin, I do agree, but they are so dang comfortable that I do wear them when bumming around the house on the weekend. They are also a GOD-send for the medical profession! Ever since I started wearing them during my 12-hour shifts as a nurse, my feet no longer ache. Now if they could only make them without holes AND not make your feet sweat at the same time, so OSHA will quit whining.

I don't care about your argument that it's comfortable. I think not wearing a bra and not wearing pants is great but I don't go out in public like that. No matter what anyone says, banishing Crocs is a very important issue. Don't be fooled by those liberals! LOL Just joking, I usually don't even notice people wearing crocs. Except when my husband points it out, because he knows how those shoes annoy me. But otherwise, live and let live. If they want to wear ugly shoes, then let them wear ugly shoes. If the man wants to make fun of those that wear ugly shoes, let him make fun. If you think you can wear those ugly things without anyone making fun of you, you are just delusional.</
