"They???re bright. They???re sturdy. They???re trendy. They???re Crocs ??? the often gaudily colored plastic shoes worn on playgrounds, hospital floors, beaches and hiking trails all across the United States. And as of this month, they???re on the feet of thousands of children, women and men on the central plateau of Haiti.
The sudden popularity of Crocs in poor Haitian communities wasn???t dictated by fashion. It was prescribed by doctors. Going barefoot in the rocky hills and muddy valleys of Haiti isn???t just uncomfortable. It leads to a major public health problem ??? an epidemic of tungiasis, an infestation of sand fleas that can cause pain, itching, swelling, open sores and, if left untreated, sepsis, tetanus or gangrene.
The initiative was orchestrated by Kageno Worldwide, a non-profit dedicated to ???transform[ing] communities suffering from inhumane poverty into places of opportunity and hope.??? Kageno solicited the shoes from Soles United, Crocs??? program for donating shoes made from recycled material." (taken from PIH.org) So perhaps instead of mouthing off, you could use your journalist skills to request donations for those who might actually appreciate them no matter how unfashionable.

Well, I'm not as much of a vocalist about these, but I second most of his thoughts. They're hideous, and not terribly safe. Just google "crock escalator accidents" and see what you find. You can find comfort in far nicer packaging if you look hard enough, stop using that excuse. Even my kids call them "ugly shoes", horrified that Sketchers now makes them too.

Everyone who agrees this article as 'good' is a loser, and prime example why America is sinking down on the internation front.. This guy should shut the hell up and stop wasting our time with this overly drawn out article on our apparteny 'national crisis". Get a life guy... it's your own fashion crisis, go cry about it to your mom now you intolerant ass. Yea. Crocs are gay, I totally agree. But, so are gays, now go try bashing them for their preference. This is a free country. So free an idiot like you could get a job writing this dribble for newsweek, and your idiot editor too. Both of you should be fired. It''s friggin election time... wrtite something newsworthy. Pathetic.....

    • Posted By: lamk22 @ 08/05/2008 12:17:56 PM

I think it's more likely America is "sinking" because people like you insist on censoring everything. Not to mention your incredibly "intolerant ass". Don't use "gay" as a synonym for something negative and maybe people might take you seriously.

I think this article is very well written. Even as a backyard -only CROCS wearer myself, I found this to be hilarious and amusing. My husband wears them to cut the grass and do yardwork in so his regular shoes don't get ruined. I wear them to pick up dog crap, if I accidentally step in something wicked, they can be washed off easily. I have no intention of wearing CROCS to a wedding anytime soon.

Those without foot problems could never understand the pain we suffer and crocs is the first shoe, as ugly as it is, that lets me walk, when I can't find anything else for my feet and there fore stuck in a scooter, now I can actually walk some distance and I could care less if some doesn't like them, they have given me freedom. Be as rude as you like and hopefully you will never have to suffer with bad feet and diabetes.
It's time people stop and think before they open their big mouths. Thank you Croc's RX for the chance to walk again. Char

I have to wholeheartily agree with Charlotte. I had complete reconstructive surgery on my left-ankle two winters ago and once I was out of the cast I spent many a weekend at very expensive shoe stores trying to find a pair of shoes that my forever to be enlarged (according to my orthopedic surgeon) left ankle would fit in without causing me excrutiating pain. The Croc styled shoes are they ONLY shoes that accomodate my reconstructed ankle and allow me to be able to walk and do normal things like shopping and running errands without spending hours elevating a very painful and swollen ankle and foot. I agree, they are UGLY and I would not choose to wear them if I could find other shoes that provide the same comfort and pain-free ability to walk. For special occasions I shove my foot into "regular" shoes but have to suffer the consequences later. My family would rather have a well-rested not constantly in pain mother and wife instead of a tired, miserable person who has to sit with her foot elevated and not able to play with her kids or do any of the normal activities in life. I am so glad I am no longer so concerned about appearance (as I was in my teens or my 20's) because I would be instead of a happy productive person, a miserable, unhappy but very fashionable wreck. I choose the former...............................judge me as you will. mom2teensntwins

You know, I don't care much for Crocs myself. But to sit there and DEGRADE people, because you've deticated your life to hate Crocs (as weird as that sounds), is only overshadowed by the pathetic upbringing your showing your child. I would be scolding my daughter left and right if she said something so judgemental, belittling, or condesending about a total and complete stranger based on their physical appearance of any sort.

WHATS NEXT, LAUGHING AT HANDICAP PEOPLE? Stop being so shallow, attend a few parenting classes, and worry about your OWN wardrobe. Get a life.

Maybe, just maybe, someone has feet that ache and so they can't do stuff everyone else just takes for granted. Heard of bunions, hammertoes, they hurt. Constantly. So, if you can get some relief and not feel pinched or aching, you can buy come Crocs, which , no one I know bought them because of fashion. THey help nurses and Drs. who have to stand on their feet, maybe saving someone like you. Even you deserve to be saved even tho, you have nothing else to write about that is relevant. Personally I don't care about fashion ,who is living with who, who is having babies, I care about people. Our troops, our missionarys, our government, our protected USA. I care if a child is hurt, scared, hungry and instead of your bringing it to our attention, we need to read about how you hate Crocs. All the same, I hope you and your son have a very nice day, and you can show him how some people have to live and what we can do to help each other.

Why would you waste your time writing an article about a pair of shoes? There are more important things to be teaching your son. To teach him that people are dorks because they wear a certain pair of shoes is very shallow. It's not the shoes that people wear, but the heart that they have. This article was a waste of time for you and every person that took the time to read it.

Crocs represent everything I hate about America: Ignorance, fat Americans who have no desire to present themselves in a presentable way, laziness. I blame the Northerners. My husband and I just returned from a weeklong trip to San Francisco where we were nauseated daily with Crocs and Birkenstocks. I really thought that nothing could top the nauseum I felt while looking at unkempt feet in a pair of Birkenstocks. No, thank you Crocs, you have taken that cake. They filled every shoe store window there. It made me want to run straight to the Castro District. You won't find a pair there.

I think you need to find something better to do with your time, not just as a lover of crocs they are extremly comfy for a nurse that spends 12 hours of her day on her feet on concrete floors.
I have 2 sons that have crocs they make great water shoes as well

Of all the historic landmarks in Old Town Alexandria, you are teaching your son to look at tourists feet?

  • Posted By: Dani_Elle @ 08/05/2008 12:12:16 PM

I wasn't bothered by the dis on crocs. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion just like everyone writing their comments are entitled to say what they want about the article. The thing that bothered me was the fact that he lets his son judge people by what they wear. I myself will not condone my child judging people by what they wear because then I wouldn't be any better. I'm not gonna lie crocs are very very ugly, but I will also admit that I own a pair. When I was pregnant it was them or slippers and trust me the slippers got really smelly. I don't recommend wearing slippers for shoes.

I only read a few lines and it already had me laughing, it's so true, wear some normal shoes for crying out loud people. Do we all look alike ...."No"....nor should we attempt to....as for the rest of you guys making the comments, if you're offended maybe you should find something to do with your time, if the man wants to voice what his thoughts are...let it be.....and besides when was the last time you just sat and observed others in their true form and busy life, on the go all the time, where it seems everyone whats to be just like everyone else....ummmm? So be creative and teach your kids to be individuals not to blend in. See Ya
