I have issues with vericose veins at the age of 30. I had very extensive surgery on my one leg to remove several clotted veins. Post op my foot was and still is swollen and unfortunately I have been reduced to wear nothing but flop flops so I can fit my swollen foot into a shoe. Needless to say I have found support in a Croc flop not to mention the little nubbies on the sole help to stimulate blood circulation which I very much need with the few veins I have left. Another big bonus, they don't stink like my other shoes after wearing them without socks for days on end. Like thesunnyc stated they are a blessing for those with medical issues!

You know, I never really liked crocs a whole lot, but when they made it so my handicapped niece could wear something over the braces on her legs, and get a little support from a shoe, so she could walk (with her walker of course), I became quite a fan. They may be unfashionable in this guy's eyes, and maybe a lot of people's eyes, but to a lot of handicapped kids, they are a big help. Something that fits over their braces and doesn't cause blisters. Now I think they are a handy pair of shoes, don't you?

I know several people who have autism, including my daughter who wears crocs. Not only is the shoe identifiable for children who have autism, they are easier to wear (as most have a flatter foot) and because they like to walk around barefoot most of the time, the crocs are an easy fit. Call me lazy, but it beats chasing down the child to put the lace-up sneakers or sandals back on their feet and they can do it themselvees. .

I don't like those shoes either, I personally find them hideous and outdated. It was fine for back in the 80s when I was like 5, but as an adult I wouldn't wear them. I have a friend who is on the opposite side of the fashion spectrum as me, and adores the shoes, but that's her thing. I don't have anything against people who wear them, they just aren't for me. I express my own sense of style, and if I like it, I like it, if not, oh well, I don't buy it.

I'm glad that there are other croc haters out there! Those things are hideous! I wouldn't wear them anywhere, not even to do my gardening. Last year I had a mini reunion with some friends from high school. One of them, an otherwise intelligent woman, actually bought TWO pair at the South Street Seaport, much to our horror. She lives in SAN DIEGO, so I guess that the impact of those horrible things is everywhere. When a few of us asked her why she bought them, she explained that they were impossible to get in San Diego, Thank goodness good taste prevails somewhere! I can't picture San Diego cool in crocs. It just doesn't compute. In case you're wondering, she isn't San Diego cool; she still hasn't shed her nerdlette image from HS.
When I was visiting my best friend in Chicago last month, I went out on a little shoppping excursion on Michigan Avenue. In a souvenir shop, I overheard a conversation between two women who were debating the "hideousness" of crocs. Being a typical New Yorker, I couldn't help putting in my two cents worth. I backed the woman who was saying how awful they are. She promptly announced to anyone who would listen that she thought that I was the coolest woman in the store! It was pretty funny. Sadly, you can get them anywhere, even the Disney Store and the Disney parks have them with Mickey Mouse cutouts. WHEN WILL IT END????? They're taking over!
A little aside to Admhob: The line about the Germans bombing Pearl Harbor was a joke.

I lived in San Diego for about 10 years then moved to Chicago--- So I know what's up in both ports.
      And. You. Do. ROCK.
      LOL!
You can hang at our bonfire anytime, New York!

You sad, obnoxious women. Typical rude person who thinks her opinion and thoughts on anything is worthy of interupting another converstation to get her point across.

You are insane. You should be medicated. You are a boring, obnoxious snob (I am sure without cause). I would waer crocks around my neck if it kept you at distance from me.

I do not wear crocs...never have never will...but I do not make fun of people who wear them. It's their choice. Personally I think they are uncomfortable. I will just stick with my flip flops and flats. Good article. Bad topic.

3 years ago my son and I moved from Southern California to Denver, Colorado. One of our first stops was the AMAZING Museum of Nature and Science. While there we caught our first glimpse that we were no longer in California! There standing across from us gazing at the Into the Wild display was a family of five all wearing the most hideous objects on their feet. I was not even certain they were technically footwear. I thought they might be foreigners, maybe from Holland (plastic "wooden" shoes??) The fact that they were all wearing matching shirts hinted that they were, GASP, Americans. Foreigners rarely practice the obscene practice of forcing their families to dress alike. When I returned to our temporary living quarters my cousin informed me that these were the latest shoe trend. "And they're made right here in Colorado!!" as if that made their existence okay.
Thank the fashion goddess that my son spent his most formative years in California where MOST fashion trends are reasonable. At seven he was smart enough to know these shoes were for DORKS, I use this word in the slang form not as the whale anatomy that it truly is.
Now at this point I have to disagree quite loudly with the author of this piece. I am an English Instructor at a K-5 elementary school. I can safely shout that MOST teachers, at least the sensible ones that don't want to see their charges endure a life of fashion ridicule, HATE crocs. (I refuse to capitalize such an atrocity.) Not only are they ugly; they flap around; collect dirt, rocks and snow; squeak when wet; and are a nightmare in gym and at recess. I encourage all my little pumpkin pies to wear REAL shoes made by companies like Vans, Converse, Sketchers, Nike and Adidas.
In such a earth conscious society should we really be encouraging a shoe, or any fashion trend for that matter, that will ALWAYS be around? These non biodegradable, non recyclable shoes will always be here. (Before you send some snarky response google "crocs biodegradable?" 9 out of 10 experts agree they are a menace. If you happen to live in the ONE city that will accept them let me know and I will personally start the nonprofit for croc hatters to steal these, these, things from loved ones and sent them to you. I don't want to take the chance of my future generations discovering these "shoes" and mistakenly assuming I participated in such a fashion crime.

What a horrible parent! Why not tech your child about things that really matter. People wear what they can afford. Shame on you.

You must see the movie Idiocracy by mike judge...not only is it funny, and a brilliant observation on society, but it also has those hideous jelly-shoe cousins prominently featured in the basic wardrobe of the intelligence-challenged society of the future. And mike Judge made the movie before crocs bacame a national fad...which only makes it funnier!

    Steve,
Man you are exactly right... we should probably just go out & buy shoes made in China or India instead... Great idea my man. Continue the Croc bashing...Maybe we can move this comedic bashing onto the hippies out in Boulder that make em too! YEAH! Hippie bashing! I'm off to buy some Tiawan sweat shop made NIKE's now or maybe even some Old Navy flip flops made in Burma. Great article, idiot. If I wrote your checks, I would ask for a re-write!

Its not about having to look at people all the time...all you have to do is check the stores...these shoes are everywhere. But these shoes are needed in certain areas like hospitals ect, I'll give it that, but I'm a teacher and I wouldn't wear them to work, I want my students to see me as a professional who cares about her appearance...these shoes are just for comfort and the fact that so many people want to wear them to all events is just another product of the culture going haywire. By the way in Atlanta a child wearing crocs in the airport almost lost his foot and definately is croc in the escalator...seems if you where shoes that fit there wouldn't be these problems

Why am I not surprised that the writer is male? Of all the uncomfortable options women have, where shoes are concerned...let's just say that Crocs (as well as all their imitations) are here to stay. Deal with it.

    • Posted By: miami207 @ 08/05/2008 11:38:55 AM

Doesn't matter that the writter is male, there are soooo many options out there for females when it comes to comfortable shoes (or flip flops). You can have the best of both worlds, comfort and style. Take my Reefs for example, they are comfortable (I wear them all the time), stylish and functional (they have a bottle opener on the bottom. You just need to know where to shop.

This really annoyed me - I know it was said jokingly and the man has the freedom in this country to really waste his time and ours by cutting and degrading people! Frozen corndogs? Pabst beer? - Where does he hang out - the corner of thrift store village and wack-o world? If you were serious and want to write about something that bothers you so then maybe look around the corner from the one you are teaching your son to sit at! Something like, in universities, doctors offices, and other places smart people work , study, and hang out it might tell you something. But if you are merely overwhelmed and making light of something because you need a vent we "understand." After all it is easier to put something or someone under the microscope when you have an aversion to self examination! Sorry, but true. Now, I'll get my nike clad feet, levi wearing self back to my project and leave him alone!

I hate Crocs. The people that wear them look like idiots. I have a co-worker who routinely wears them in a professional setting and it is very irritating. I do not care if they are comfortable, they are ugly and unprofessional. I fidn exercise shorts and sandals very comfortable, but I do not where them to restaurants or work. I often mention to young men and women wearing Crocs how similar they look to my 60 year-old mother's gardening shoes. Crocs are for losers. I know several beautiful women who have refused to talk with men wearing Crocs because of the femininity and ugliness of their footwear. Maybe ugly people feel that the distateful Crocs will pull attention and focus away from their hideous faces to their feet.

    • Posted By: Miss_Spell @ 08/05/2008 11:37:20 AM

The ugly people are the ones who feel the need to judge others to cover for their own inadequacy.

HILARIOUS!!!!!!!! I couldn't agree with you more. My husband and I have six boys and they have been begging for Crocs forever. My husband told them you are not wearing those things in my house. Great article. I could stop laughing.

  • Posted By: T-man @ 08/05/2008 11:36:28 AM

Your stupid, why are you hating on crocs. There some of the most comfortable shoes out there. So what if a man (like myself) wears pink crocs. Why does it bother you if I do that. Why don't you just take care of yourself and not care what other people are wearing. Did you say anything about the hippies with there multi-colored clothing? So why does it matter. But really who cares what you think since when are you the man who tell people what to wear. You should just keep it to yourself because I know there are more people who love croc then people who hate them. Then you say teachers are abusers of crocs. Are you a teacher? Do you know what it is like to walk around in like high heels and that stuff. Guess not. So you want to see the teacher if the have awful toenails but crocs cover that up. So shut-up about the crocs!!!!

Is this really on Newsweek? Crocs?! I'm glad I gave up that subscription back in the '90s.
