About 30 years ago, then President Jimmy "Mr. Peanut" Carter and his National Security Advisor, Zbigniew Brzezinski, had a 'peanut brain idea' that the US could take over the entire Caspian Basin mother lode of oil and natural gas if they created Al Qaeda to destabilize those Islamic areas (except for Christian Georgia) and turn them against Russia.
You can view the following two maps in much larger form by visiting the websites and zooming in on them. This is the north and south part of just the Caspian Sea area and who holds the tracts of oil and natural gas. It is not a US Show, it is now an "international affair" and the US has no one to blame but itself.

Any foe that has to use women and children as shields should be shown no mercy. The civilians they hide amongst should not stand for this. If they support there cause, and get caught in the crosshairs then so be it. They use this as propaganda to ellicit support from misguided americans. They are cowards, plain and simple. They do not value life, only death. I wonder if the Muslim religion dictates throwing there mothers and daughters and sons in the path of bullets for self righteousness.
With that out of the way, Pakistan is almost as bad. They do not wish to throw Al-Cowards to the wolves for fear of creating anarchy in there own country. (not that far of a stretch). They think they are honoring Allah. I doubt that Allah would be so cowardess as to do so.
Where are all of the Muslims in America? why aren't their voices heard denouncing all of this? Is it because you support it? I was under the impression that being muslim is believing in a peaceful nature. As the term "peace be with you" wa asallam alekum (forgive my spelling of it)....confront your fellow muslims, your voice can be heard above all of us.

Abramowitz was a former secretary of state for intelligence in Reagan administration responsible for helping arrange delivery of stinger missiles to Mujahadeen who later morphed into Al Qaeeda and taliban. Stinger missiles are made by US and not by Pakistan that transformed the Afghan war in 80s. US funneled billions of dollars worth of weapons to afghan mujahadeen to bleed Russians and helped create a Frankenstein of Jihadists ( affectionately called Mujahadeen by US and west at that time ) and people like Abramowitz were overseeing the afghan policy at that time and now blaming Pakistan conveniently without mentioning the major US role through CIA to create holy warriors to fight Russians that are causing the havoc now.
US used Pakistan at that time to revenge US.S.R for defeat in the Vietnam war and in the process became sole super power. Without Pakistan's crucial help in the afgan war of 80s , US would not have become sole super power.
US has been using Pakistan since its creation throughout the cold war and always supporting the military dictators like Ayub , Zia and recently Mussharaf and undermining the democratic aspirations of Pakistani people.
US. can't control its flat southern border resulting in millions of illegals in this country despite spending billions of dollars and sophisticated sensors at the border and expect Pakistan to control its extremely difficult mountainous border completely with much smaller resources. Wow ! Height of hypocrisy ! Pakistan is a convenient scapegoat for US and the west for their failures.
US and the west sowed THE SEEDS OF HATE AND INTOLERANCE in the Afgan war of 80s using Saudi petrodollars and are now reaping the harvest putting the world peace in jeopardy and people like Abramowitz who were overseeing that so called Jihad are now conveniently acting as innocents. Shame on you ! and shame on this publication for giving space to these individuals .

Now they have started the blame game and authors like that of this article thinks that nobody knows about the history of Afghan war of 80s and can fool gullible American people easily. Read Steve Coll's "Ghost war" and read George Crile's "Charlie Wilson war" to get a glimpse of American CIA's Afghan secret war that created the extremists that call themselves as AlQaeeda and Taliban today.

One day Pakistan will become an islamic theocracy-with nuclear weapons. The P-stani's hate us, we hate them. They watch our movements and report it to the hadji's. The Frontier Corps needs a serious pasting, that should send the message that we are not playing that game. We have been in fire fights with them-and the hadji's fighting right alongside them. The hell with them. Most Soldiers want payback. They are 2 faced swine. They deserve it. The T-ban/AQ govern Waziristan-its not even governed by Islamabad. Free Fire Zone. A hostile gov. right over the border. I bet legally the US would be in the right on this. P-stani double dealing...

If the US and NATO do not secure a logistics route that does not include Pakistan, the 100 or more camps in the tribal area [Waziristan] will continue to train fighters, be a base where they can plan cross border attacks, and destabilize A-stan. These camps must be eradicated, and the P-stani's have NO intention of stopping this. The ISI is in bed with our enemies, the P-stani Army is indifferent to the militants ops in W-stan, and generally we [US] are being suckered by the P-stani's for BILLIONS and military hardware. Bush must have concrete between his ears, the P-stani's are our ENEMY~! Strike those camps, air-assault a couple battalions into the problem area, and tell the P-stani's to stay the hell outta the way. The T-ban/AQ got it better now than they EVER did. This will happen sooner or later. You want to kill an insurgency? You deny them safe havens. Pakistan is now the safe haven. Bomb those camps to dust.

The problem is that you cant just leave them alone.......pakistan has become in essence the baby that need constant prodding from its parents...its economy is shot...its military is giving the impression of protecting its nuclear weapons....the reality is the Mushie was behind Kargil and backs the ISI 100%....if we leave them alone good chance the nuclear bomb will become an Islamic bomb....I agree war is never desirable but it's necessary at times....Afghanistan is flourishing under Karzai.....ask the Afghan PPl who is better the Taliban or the current admistration.....? I don'y back my country all the time but you know what......that's what wonderful about it..its called freedom of speech.....gotta luv it! But in this instance I will back it up 100% stop terrorism or stand in line to get annhilated. Peace!

Abramowitz, I ams sorry to tell you that your scholarly idea is equivalent to the sewer. Firstly, the US has no right to be the master of the world, impose its values on other, invade other countries, installing puppet regimes and create instability in the world. Look at Vietnam now. What has the US achieved? The Vietnam War has resulted in sustaining NOTHING! The billions of USD and thousands of US soldiers (60,000) spent and died in the Vietnam are all WASTED. Vietnam is still not a democracy now and yet it prospers!

The same thing goes for both Afghanistan and Pakistan. Leave them alone.

This article is misleading. Its true that Pakistan helped Mujhaideen to fight Soviets, but this help was triggered by aid, intelligence, technology and interest from United States. Its is obviuos that halting the red army was part of the US plan, as it was a fighting a cold war against communism.

The region has a histrory of violence and terrorism dating from the time of Ganges khan, Mangols and Mughals. The only solution to stop this is to spread modern education instead of spending money on the war.

Also, I wonder how Pakistan have been accused of not doing enough to stop infiltration. If this is possible why don't NATO and allies deploy more forces on their side of the border to stop this. The simple answer is that it is very difficult if not impossible to guard the mountaneous region.

When asked even before the invasion of Iraq whether that would not dilute our efforts in Afghanistan, Cheney assured us that the opposite was true. And W. agreed with him. The problem is not in Pakistan, but in Washington, DC.

I don't think history will ever record that Pakistan was the single biggest reason for the Soviet failure in Afghanistan. It is too complex, the problem is too big to say Pakistan is the problem. Our will, that is, the will of the U.S.-lead coalition is the problem that we must face head-on. We are not going to create a wonderland in this part of the world, but alot of goodwill has gone into this country. The lessons of the British Army are pertinent indeed and I'm sure they have been studied since they found out the hard way what kind of sword the Khyber Pass wields . We have to fight to overcome our adversaries, not only for the soldiers who have already gave their lives for the cause but for the people of the countryside. The attitude should not be, let's just tank this operation basically because we might end up like the Soviets, shamed and dismayed because it became too much to handle. The will of the people is certainly involved here, but the people in this case include not just U.S. citizens, but people of all NATO countries right? Where is our voice? Are we getting stronger? The Taliban only seem to be getting stronger, what really is going on is that the ideology of radical jihadism is reaching a furious pace in response to setbacks in Iraq and of course an American election year in the midst of all this fighting. The young fighters may be tough and they are certainly determined, but if they are willing to die then we have to be ready to take them on and defeat them, or else the country will be overrun with militants, gun runners, munitions and bomb factories, you name it, like Somalia, and nothing in the way of economic progress or development of the next generation will occur.

Inequality in interpersonal relationships and among countries always breeds the strongest resentment and insecurity. The U.S. and the world community needs to make Pakistan feel wanted, needed, included and respected because at this moment in time, Pakistan feels that they are being surrounded by enemies and are being undermined by the U.S.
How could one possibly expect the Pakistanis to fight the war on international terrorism alongside the U.S. when we are actively buliding-up India, their rival with an "India only exemption" to the NPT, a nuclear deal that is very discriminatory. The U.S. is constantly trumpeting how important india is and should have a permanent seat on the U.N. Security Council.
Well, India is very important. But so is Pakistan.
The world community, led by the U.S., should show Pakistan some more respect. Treat it equally, not as a subserviant third-rate country, but as a leading Muslim nation of the world.
The U.S. should nominate Pakistan and India (along with Israel, South Africa, Mexico and Brazil, for example) for permanent seats on the Security Council-because it's the right thing to do. Pakistan is one of the premier Muslim nations in the world with a very large population. The U.S. should also offer Pakistan a comparable nuclear agreement as has been offered to India (I know about Pakistan's proliferation record; but we should think of the prospect of an agreement with them as an investment in their stabilty and in the stability of world peace and their bad record is now history). We most probably will find that these two gestures, and not necessarily the conventional type of military and economic aid, will cause Pakistanis to feel respected and its people will look-up and take notice and say, "We, a Muslim nation, are being empowered by the world community, we must show our thanks by demonstrating our ability to take on these terrorists and defeat them" . I will bet that once they feel such an acceptance by the world community that they will bend over backwards to fight the crucial fight that is required of them by the U.S. and by the world.
