Days of 'Thunder'

Ben Stiller made $40 million last year to act silly. But let's really get serious. What he really wants to do is direct.

The whole RETARD part was one of the funniest parts in the movie, exspecially when Downey Jr. was telling him you never go FULL RETARD!!! haha those parts in the movie about RETARDS were just histarical. Simple Jack ww..waa...wwaaaassss.wasss....was ggg......ree....gre....grreeeaaa.....tttttttt......greeeaattttt. HAHA!!!

Comment: What exactly do you mean by "Downey is astonishing: he's so deep into this double role that when the characters' ghetto accent occasionally falters, it slips into an Aussie accent"? What is a "ghetto accent"?

Comment: Guess what retards...its AMERICA no one is FORCING you to watch a movie. Its rated R for a reason!

Comment: No one is forcing anyone to do anything here. The problem is that the movie makes it acceptable to ridicule and demean people with developmental disabilities. Sorry, it's just not funny to make fun of people who, through no fault of their own, have cognitive deficits. "Retard" is, and has always been, an insult. It's a way of dehumanizing people, of disregarding their worth. Go ahead and make fun of me - I'm a woman, a liberal, a blonde, a Californian - and I can defend myself. But don't pick on my sister with Down syndrome - she's a gentle soul, doing her best to be a productive citizen, and she is mentally retarded because of a chromosomal glitch that was beyond anyone's control. Anyone who gets off on making her the butt of their jokes is a pathetic bully. Pick on someone who can defend themselves.

Comment: "The "R" word needs to be banned." Words are only expressions of thoughts. People who wish to ban words in reality wish to ban certain thoughts. These are the truly scary people in our society, in any society. Read some George Orwell you might learn something. This is still America by the way, Retard. Retard. Retard. Retard.

I cannot believe that you would applaud the "full retard" scene. Have you no respect? Would you feel the same way if it were "full n....r"? The "R" word needs to be banned. As a parent of a child with Down syndrome, I can't imagine what I will do when I see a person wearing a "Never go full retard" t-shirt. To me, that is hate speech and bullying. What has my son done to deserve this? Shame on Dreamworks, Viacom, Ben Stiller and YOU for applauding this nonsense!

Please, go here and just read some of the comments posted by loved ones of people with disabilities. I cannot believe that you would commend them on the "full retard" scene. Would you have if it were a "full n....r" scene? Please, enough is enough.

Comment: Recently, I saw Stiller/Black/Downey replace the Pips in their American Idol send-up. Remarkably funny, but very wrong. Of course they have the right to do it, it is American after all. When is it "OK" to erase Black men?The Republicans compared Sen. Obama with Hilton/Spears.When is it "OK" to elide Black men with white women? This week, Black American lost two truly gifted men, Isaac Hayes and Bernie Mack. When is it "OK" for non-Blacks to use "Blackness" as a comic device when the "Real McCoys" leave us? Does Lee, Lathan, Singleton, Townsend and Duke have the same license to insult as Stiller? Mr. Ansen please respond

Comment: How can you all call this movie funny and recommend people to see it? It is racist and brings back blackface a tradition that should never rear its ugly head in a mainstream films again.

Comment: I understand Stiller's also working on a adaptation of the Rick Huffman book "Baxter Peanut" and some of the chapters from "Graffiti Mirror" as well. Those will be difficult page to screen works, but Ben is one of the guys who understands those books and can do it.

    Comment: Should be great.

Comment: Stiller is a comic legend, anyone who can't see that....well I just feel sorry for you. "Notepad123"..you should watch your mouth son, cause sooner or later, you'll get yours little guy. It's not our fault you couldn't get any poon tang even if it was stapled to your forehead.

Comment: I'm surprised that Mr. Ansen's review of Tropic Thunder left out the hurt caused by Mr. Stiller and DreamWorks regarding it's demeaning use of the word "retard." The point isn't that they didn't intend to hurt anyone's feelings - the point is that they DID hurt the feelings of defenseless children and their devoted parents. Even worse, they have made it ok for everyone else to do the same. I will think of Mr. Stiller every time someone says "don't go full retard" in front of my sweet, loving, defenseless daughter, because she is what he and his cronies call a retard. But everyone who knows her, our neighbors in our apartment building, our neighbors on the street, our dry cleaner, the mailman, the bus driver, our police officers and oir firefighters, all love her and delight in her, and would do anything to protect her from thoughtless, self-righteous, money-grubbing losers like Ben Stiller and the cast of characters at DreamWorks. Now I'll have to add you, Mr. Ansen to this list for not having the guts to write a truthful review.

Comment: I agree with you, missionmom. As the sister of a woman with Down syndrome, and as a special education teacher for more than 30 years, I find it incredible that so many consider it acceptable to insult and demean people who are truly defenseless. If you insult people for reasons of gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, or ethnicity, at least those people can advocate for themselves. My sister and my students (past, present, and future) are unable to defend themselves. This is truly bullying, at its lowest and most despicable form

Comment: My son is handicapped also. But, name calling and staring are part of life. Get used to it. You're never going to convince everyone to use the words you deem acceptable. So, here's a thought. Teach your daughter to ignore people who say things that hurt her feelings. Teach her to understand that people who say things she doesn't like are ignorant and not worth listening too.

It's not up to society to change itself for our feelings. It's up to individuals to not be so damn sensitive all the time.

Comment: I'm with you missionmom. Name calling doesn't have to be part of life. It's only acceptable because too many people don't stand up against it. Society does change itself -- sometimes it's even for the better and it does that because people like missionmom are willing to speak out - not because people like presidentsupport tell others stop being so "damn sensitve". Hate crimes are rampant against people with disabilities -- hate speak needs to stop.

        • Posted By: PresidentSupporter @ 08/19/2008 6:40:28 PM

Comment: There is a huge difference between using the word retard and a hate crime. That's where sensitvity comes in . I do not think crimes against people out of hate are ok!

Hate speak isn't right, but it's not up to society to police it. It's up to individuals to grow up and not take everything so seriously.

Comment: This is why I don't read newsweek anymore, and canceled my subscription.

I only clicked on this because I've worked with Stiller, fond him to be one of the world's worst human beings, and I was hoping that maybe - just maybe - Ansen would have some real "interesting or critical" assessment of the film. But no, it's just another suck-up job by somebody who has seen too many movies, and thinks the audience is interested in a 100 million dollar inside joke.

  • Posted By: parhae @ 08/02/2008 9:56:37 PM

Comment: Ben Stiller is rebelling a notion that movies need to have always have a one major black character.

    • Posted By: incontext2008 @ 08/14/2008 12:07:05 AM

Comment: Unfortunately, his critique is very unclear. Racial discourses are what they are. You deal with the environment at where it is -- not in some utopia. We live in a world where the industry "loses its mind" over MAD MEN, and THE WIRE is ignored. After al this is over, Mr. Stiller has the ability to go back and enjoy "white male priviledge." I appreciate that he has something to say and has the right to say it. I wish he were more astute in reading the culture. His heartfelt opinion seems like tears on THE VIEW or a cartoon in a Danish newspaper.
