On Sunday, longtime Washington hand David Gergen took umbrage with John McCain's recent attack ads, charging that the Senator was using coded messaging to paint Barack Obama as "outside the mainstream" and "uppity."

"There has been a very intentional effort to paint him as somebody outside the mainstream, other, 'he's not one of us,'" said Gergen, who has worked with White Houses, both Republican and Democrat, from Nixon to Clinton. "I think the McCain campaign has been scrupulous about not directly saying it, but it's the subtext of this campaign. Everybody knows that. There are certain kinds of signals. As a native of the south, I can tell you, when you see this Charlton Heston ad, 'The One,' that's code for, 'he's uppity, he ought to stay in his place.' Everybody gets that who is from a southern background. We all understand that. When McCain comes out and starts talking about affirmative action, 'I'm against quotas,' we get what that's about."

Ever since Kenya became independent two years ago, Jomo Kenyatta's rallying cry has been harambee -Swahili for "all pull together." Most Kenyans have been quite happy to put aside their tribal and political rivalries and give pulling together a try. The notable exception: Oginga Odinga, 54, Vice President of the nation, deputy president of its only political party and leader of the powerful Luo tribe. A wealthy and ambitious leftist who disagrees violently with Kenyatta's moderate policies, Odinga has spent the past two years trying to pull his own government apart.

He has attempted to import Communist arms, has received both money and ad vice from Communist diplomats, has at tacked fellow Cabinet ministers as "imperialist agents."

It was a startling allegation. "Arms and ammunition," charged National Assemblyman Thomas Malinda, "are continuously being smuggled from Communist and other foreign countries into Kenya for the purpose of staging an armed revolution to overthrow our beloved government." The charge brought a quick denial from Security Minister Njoroge Mungai, who admitted, however, that "many people have been trained in the armed forces of other countries and the first we know about it is when they get back."

Whether smuggling was involved or not, the recent exchange brought to the surface the conflict that has long been raging within the government of President Jomo Kenyatta. Vice President Oginga Odinga, wealthy, 53-year-old leader of the Luo tribe, which forms an important part of Kenyatta's KANU party coalition, has been openly attempting to turn the new nation toward Communism

AND as I told ya'll months ago....it got so bad, the U.S. State Dept. asked Sen. Obama to intercede........

CBS NEWS....................The Associated Press reports that Obama has spoken to Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga to "express grave concerns over the election's outcome," according to Odinga's spokesperson, who added that the Democratic hopeful also plans to call Kenyan president Mwai Kibaki.

Obama, who has discussed the situation with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, has also recorded a message urging an end to the violence for broadcast on Voice of America radio.

But straight up folks. It is a real easy decision. Regardless of anything, true or untrue, about Senator McCain. He has one UNTOUCHABLE advantage over Hussein.......it is this......At the end of the day, Senator John McCain, most certainly is.............................NOBAMA!!!. That is all that really matters.

I lost my remaining respect for John McCain after he embraced Jerry Falwell when speaking at the Liberty University graduation. Just a few years earlier, McCain had correctly called Falwell an "agent of intolerance," but pandering to the religious right was more important to McCain than snubbing a man who had trashed him during a previous campaign.

I'm not sure that the maverick McCain of 2000 would vote for the McCain of 2008.

We all know the Ad is Rove all the way and we also know that Rove would never inject race into a presidential campaign Ad even as an undercurrent message. 2000 presidential campaign anyone? Wink, wink, snirk, smirk. john Mccain's claim that this is humor is and old trick by most delivers of racial jokes and it is always cloaked by one or more themes to soften the impact but it doesn't hide the fact.

I love the liberal bias Alter. Like we needed a reason not to buy Newsweek. How is circulation doing by the way? Hope you are better at flipping burgers.

Thank you for that piece. Finally someone is telling the truth. A McCain in the White House scares me. All I know about him is oil, war, oil war and some war. All you journalists out there please start looking closely at him and call him out. Isn't that what your job is. I heard Pat Buchanon on Morning Joe say if McCain won we will invade Iran, pretty scary to hear him say that. Anyway, thanks John for being true to yourself and the American people.
