As crazy as it seems, McCain's strategy doesn't seem to be hurting him. His Republican base isn't leaving him and he seems to be gaining some ground with Independents. Maybe he and his campaign understand the American psyche more than some of the rest of us would choose to admit.

We still need to remember McCains anger issues. Calling his own wife a cun# and leaving his first wife even though she stayed by his side when he was a P.O.W. and keeping the fort together. When she gets deformed, he turnes his back on her to be with Cindy McCain only because she is rich. He is sad for America and sad for the world. Carly Fiorina has a plan to send more jobs overseas and to screw the hard workers in Ohio and PA and KY. America really need to wake up. They are in it for themselves.

This week the McCain campaign completely exposed the way Obama and his campaign have been skillfully playing the race-card. As a Democrat, I find it deeply disturbing.

With all McCain's "missteps" and "gaffes" that Jonathan Alter wisely points out, it's the back-handed race-baiting that is so distructive.

Quit crying Obamawill be your president.

"They're gonna say he doesn't look like those other presidents on the dollar bills."

Excellent article. However, the quote above is something I still don't understand why the media hasn't covered well. Obama wasn't talking about the McCain campaign necessarily, although this latest ad makes me wonder. He meant the scores of lying, fearmongers, some of whom you can read on this forum, who lie about Obama's religion, or place of birth or where the campaign money is coming from (people like me!) or anything they can think up to tarnish his image. This ad is chillingly similar to the one aired against Ford in '06; White women + Black man = Appeal to base White fears.

By far, the best criticism Obama could have hammered against McCain was his flip-flapping, but now Obama isn't helping himself much either with his own flip-flaps, which to be fair are less in number and gravity as McCain's.

McCain sold his soul a long time ago. One way to judge if someone has integrity is to judge their values not in the good times, but in the trying times. Every time McCain fears he is losing he does a 180 on his values (Straight Talk Express my butt).

It's about time somebody looked at McCain's antics with some measure of honesty. But what baffles me is that there still appears to be some expectation that a different, kinder, smarter McCain is going to show up now. McCain, for my money, was always play acting in his role as a maverick, a person of conviction and principle.

Sen McCain has lead himself and his party to slaughter. Reminds me of of General Custer, only this is McCain's last stand. Also, the end of the Republican's occupying the office of the Presidency for the next 20 years. This is a pathetic old man who is fried on his own lust for the presidency. He has never supported vets since he has been a senator and has voted against veteran's issues 85% of the times vet bills were up for vote. Barrack Obama has more class in his right index finger than McCain has in his entire body. I still think this man would lead us into the final war. He is an egotistical eletist with no regard for any human alive worth less than a million dollars and now, above all things, he touts his dislike of corporate greed! Sen McCain, you have met your match in Sen Obama. You've mouthed your way straight to the slaughter and there is no fix now. Your abusive nature in the senate isn't worth a dime to you now. And Jonathan Alter, you surely hit the nail on the head with this story. This military retired old soldier salutes you for hitting the nail straight on the head or on McCain's head.

John McCain is an old man who can't stand to be upstaged by the younger Obama. He's also a racist, no matter how many ways he claims he's not.. Thank you for looking at the way McCain is playing the political game and telling it like it is. I look forward to your columns with each Newsweek I get and each article on the internet. Your factual reporting and analysis is much appreciated.

If the press was really honest about it they would point out the the McCains are the elists. Cindy saying that you really have to have a private plane to get around Arizona, John's $500 shoes, Cindy and her $750,000 credit card bill, their 8 houses. Who is more like the average American, Obama!! Get real, this poor ecomomy doesn't hurt McCain, he has no clue what it is like to be poor and there is no way he could empathize with the rest of us poor slobs.

    God bless you Johnathan:
Your article is saw factual and insightful, that my hopes that Americans re intelligent enough to see this fake MaCain as the strangest presidential candidate.
You only have to watch his news conferences and you realize that he is a total disappointment in every Aanswer he gives, and specifically his attacks on Obama.

Mc Cain's handlers just want to squeeze him into the office where they can then take over the power as they have with Bush, who had hardly the sense to pour piss out of a boot in an office much too large for his meager talent. We need to stop this. The dirty campaigning has to go along with these crooks who are doing it. Throw them all out. Get us back on track before they trash the whole country and China comes to collect our treasury.

Comment: The Mccain campaign is almost incoherent. He is also a worse speaker than George Bush if that is possible. He should be attacking Pelosi and tying Obama to her since this congress is shameful. Instead he declaresshe is wonderful. He needs to run against this shameful congress. He does not take a pledge to not raise taxes and the following day he states that we cannot elect Obama because he will raise taxes. This election is winnable for McCain if his campaign becomes coherent. For more on this election http://www.eworldvu.com

I'll agree with you on the incoherent part concerning McCain, but the Dem Congress couldn't get much of anything done, thanks to Bush vetoes and Republican filerbustering in the Senate. It's kind of hard to pin just two years on the Dems while saying the previous twelve years of Republican control were trouble-free...

For all the Hopium addicted obamamohammeds, frantically trying to discredit, Dr. Corsi and "Obama Nation". Hussein "cousin" Odinga is a thug. Is a Communist. Is in deep with the Radical Islamists. Is Anti-American. Here is a bit from TIME........................

The Trouble with Odinga..................TIME online Aug. 03, 2008
Ever since Kenya became independent two years ago, Jomo Kenyatta's rallying cry has been harambee -Swahili for "all pull together." Most Kenyans have been quite happy to put aside their tribal and political rivalries and give pulling together a try. The notable exception: Oginga Odinga, 54, Vice President of the nation, deputy president of its only political party and leader of the powerful Luo tribe. A wealthy and ambitious leftist who disagrees violently with Kenyatta's moderate policies, Odinga has spent the past two years trying to pull his own government apart.

He has attempted to import Communist arms, has received both money and ad vice from Communist diplomats, has at tacked fellow Cabinet ministers as "imperialist agents."

    More from TIME..............................

It was a startling allegation. "Arms and ammunition," charged National Assemblyman Thomas Malinda, "are continuously being smuggled from Communist and other foreign countries into Kenya for the purpose of staging an armed revolution to overthrow our beloved government." The charge brought a quick denial from Security Minister Njoroge Mungai, who admitted, however, that "many people have been trained in the armed forces of other countries and the first we know about it is when they get back."

Whether smuggling was involved or not, the recent exchange brought to the surface the conflict that has long been raging within the government of President Jomo Kenyatta. Vice President Oginga Odinga, wealthy, 53-year-old leader of the Luo tribe, which forms an important part of Kenyatta's KANU party coalition, has been openly attempting to turn the new nation toward Communism

AND as I told ya'll months ago....it got so bad, the U.S. State Dept. asked Sen. Obama to intercede........

CBS NEWS....................The Associated Press reports that Obama has spoken to Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga to "express grave concerns over the election's outcome," according to Odinga's spokesperson, who added that the Democratic hopeful also plans to call Kenyan president Mwai Kibaki.

Obama, who has discussed the situation with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, has also recorded a message urging an end to the violence for broadcast on Voice of America radio.

Twist it, turn it.......shake it, bake it..............hip or hop it..........READ THE TRUTH..........""OBAMA NATION"

Hussein Obama is a crook and a fraud.

    NOBAMA!!!

Interesting the Bush Administration should go to OBama to assist in foriegn policy maybe they know something you don't

Goodness you are dense...the State Dept. asked Hussein to intercede, because....he had campaigned extensively for his murderous cousin. He has ties to the Kenyan mohammed community, AND it doesn't look good to have an ethnic cleansing cousin...when running for POTUS.

        NOBAMA!!!

Superb work again, Mr. Alter! Why does it seem like we're on the same page?! McCain's selling out his political soul to be President, apparently at any cost.

  • Posted By: sherrybb @ 08/03/2008 5:10:10 PM

It saddens me greatly to see John Mccain sell his soul in order to win this election. It is clear that he wants this election way too much. the Maverick exists no more. John McCain has turned into the very thing he hated.

This article is right on target. McCain 2000 would have had my vote in a heartbeat but I don't even know who this new McCain guy is at all. He doesn't seem to represent anything but slick marketing and recycled 2004 fear mongering. That and the fact he cant even send an email makes me wonder why on earth anyone would want this guy as president. Obama an unknown? Yes, but he runs circles around McCain. I suspect once the debates start McCain is toast!

Think about it, do the retuglicans want to help anybody, accept there own wallets.

Better the messiah than another 4 yrs of satan.

This Election is Classic Good vs. Evil. There new God for the McWar and the GOP is Big Oil and the Exxon followers.

Sorry Mr. Alter, it is understandable why the media that is so madly in love with "Barak", would be so tormented by a very effective ad. God speed Senator McCain, keep up the good work.
