Why would an Orthodox Jew be driving on a Shabbat (Sabbath) afternoon? If he was driving on the Sabbath, he wasn't Orthodox. I think there are holes in this story. Maybe there is an alcohol problem among Orthodox Jews, but it raises questions to me when the first story in the article isn't believable.

As a sober member of AA, I have wrestled, as many new members do, with the reality that this is a spiritual program -- and although SPIRITUALITY, not RELIGION is the bedrock of AA, the spirituality the program is grounded in has a Christian flavor -- and no wonder, as the founders had, for the most part, Christian religious origins. Even for alcoholics who were raised in the various Christian denominations, it can be difficult to make the transition to "spirituality" from "religion." I have often marveled at how much more of a stretch this must be for some of my Jewish AA friends. How do those who give themselves wholeheartedly to this simple program, and achieve long-term sobriety, do it? I have great admiration for all sober members of AA, and a special respect for the Jews I have met in the program, who manage to incorporate their traditional religious beliefs when developing a new relationship with "God as we understand Him."

I don't understand the point of the article,Jewish culture embraces celebration and wine drinking at the proper time & place, sabbath it's mandatory to bless the day with wine.have you ever heard anybody wish L'chaim on a glass of Coke?of course their are always instances of extreme abuse but that doesn't mean there is an alcohol problem by Jews.Lisa I'm a big fan of your articles try again.

    Nicely done article.

I am an Orthodox Jew and an alcoholic. I became sober November 14, 1977 and have not had a drink since. I have been a member of AA and I run an AA meeting once at week at our local county jail.

    FYI...

Minor points of little practical consequenc. They are simply for your information.

    1. Orthodox Jews know why it is important not to drive on the Sabbath but it might have been worth explaining it to others. It is because we are forbidden to ride long distances on the Sabbath (travelling) with few exceptions, and we cannot light a fire on the Sabbath. Engines are run by fire. (For saving a life we may drive but that is an emergency. When in reasonable doubt, I say drive.)

    2. As I recall the Jewish rehab place in Los Angeles is Conservative, not Orthodox. But when the Titanic is sinking, one does not care whether the lifeboats have complied with all Federal regulations or have the blessings of OSHA. You want to live. Climb aboard and save your life. Frankly, no matter what place you suggested (even Orthodox) there would be someone who would say that there was this or that problem with it from a religious standpoint so it is probably best to keep it as it is.

    Be well.

Thank you for explaining for all of us who were unsure, I really enjoyed your posting, especially regarding the sinking of the Titanic, very informative post.

      Thank you.

Jews don???t drink is a stupid and dangerous stereotype. It is just another form of Jews are nerdy. When I was in college back 30 years ago the Jewish students more then held there own if not topped the other students in the drunkenness department. And today somebody obviously forgot to tell Amy Winehouse that Jews don???t drink.

There are many other Jewish treatment centers, including in Baltimore, Boca Raton, and in Michigan. I also found this cool website www.jewishrecovery.org - quality articles from quality writers.
