Don't you know that General William Tecumsah Sherman was a closet Indian? His middle name is Tecumsah for pete's sake! You know you can't trust those with "shady" middle names, now can ya? :)
    Doh!
Nowforthe truth (rather arrogant name), get a job. Your time at the computer is a bit telling...

I agree with TN Girl that this is a difficult election because I get so frustrated with people who pay lip service that they have no problem with a black man for president, but they can come up with the most lame excuse of why they can't bring themselves to vote for Obama. How can anyone look at these two candidates and believe that John McCain is going to bring change? The only change he will bring is to make things even worse than they have been under 8 years of Bush. I am from Ohio, and I can see the "Bubba" voters in full effect, just like down south. I am so appalled that this country has not come any further than this. I am a teacher in a small rural district in the northeastern part of the state and I hear the same kind of talk from my students as the 12-year old boy in the article. It just makes me so sad. I don't think I can take another disappointment of living another 4 years with a republican in the white house.

On Fincher comments statis quo.., brings to mind something that never is addressed. If there was good paying respectible jobs for black men in the deep south, then they would have entered into this world at birth, not in poverty and prejudice, but dignity and choice like any southern man. Instead they sell drugs to white rich men, because...those are the only jobs, when you have never been treated with equality. Equality for all, cost many lives between the north and south, and the corrupt ones played havoc on both sides...now is the time to be real Chritians, and Make Love your Greatest Aim, Messiah will NEVER return until you do. God is not a Wizard, and will not rescue us of our ill choices... As an American, I hope and pray someday you realize how counter productive the hate, paranoia, and prejudice is to your children's lives. After all where elese would they learn this mindset...

i'm convinced that this is why Obama can't seem to pull away from McCain. Even with all the problem in the economy, a misguided war, and disgraces like Katrina, there are Americans who see color in their hearts. Its not an overt kind of bigotry, that is too embarrassing. Instead, there is the latent remains of the "dixiecrat" mentality where people will say they aren't racist, but then whisper about "those people" in their white suburban christian neighborhood. Sad doesn't even begin to describe my meloncholy at such ignorance and social anomie.

  • Posted By: SARGE75 @ 09/16/2008 10:02:31 AM

I started to write something. But this is so sad; the ignorance is so bliss; why bother. Everyone should, no matter who is elected, petition the new administration and accomplish what the Civil war failed to do. Bust up this false union and divide the region up between the races and never interact again. That's fair, Right? I'm tired of fighting against stonewall minded individuals who can spew hate and still believe they are on God's side. No different than the people I've faced in this war, who hate ALL Americans because we are ALL Americans. 9-11 taught us nothing

Ill tell you what, bill4bigjohn hit this one straight on the head. We NEED a strong President. We NEED the kinda president that will jump right into a war, with good reason or not. We need one who thinks the world is out to end us. We NEED one who will shoot first and ask questions later. Look at the current president. More of this and our foreign policy will be even STRONGER. Wait, whats sarcasm?

  • Posted By: YouCantBeSerious @ 09/16/2008 9:30:03 AM

Yeah bill4bigjohn is right on with his comment. We NEED a strong leader. We NEED a leader just like Bush. One who will jump into a war backed by false information, a shoot from the hips kinda guy. We NEED a president who will shoot first and ask questions later. This sort of leader is one who has really bolstered our foreign relations. We NEED another Bush. Kudos to y ou bill4bigjohn.

Obama is so weak Putin will have him cleaning his house on the weekends. I do not see that strong leader in BHO that we need. We need a strong President that will protect us and Obama just don't have it.

If what Gov Palen has is "Character" then I must have missed that day in school. Perhpas you mean she is a "character" - that I would agree with. Forget all the stuff about her sister and the trooper and the per diems and the cronyism and lying about the bridge to no where. Taking books out of librarys without reading them and teaching creationism in science class will take this country back to the dark ages. Look at wall street - look at the Iraq debacle - looks at a collapsing infrastructure. We need leadership not ideolgy that takes us back two centruies. Otherwise we all better learn to speak Arabic or Mandarin.

yes, if was Biden, president, and Obama, vice president, I maybe voting Democratic. But no, I am voting Republican.

  • Posted By: quasqueton @ 09/14/2008 1:28:53 AM

Excellent article! I am an independent, and may have voted for Biden, if he were the nominee. However, I just do not trust Senator Obama (oh, he's a racist!). I don't have any "white guilt", as many seem to have. Senator McCain has character, as does Governor Palin. I often don't agree with many of their stances, but, at least, I know what they stand for! Thank you.

This is one big JOKE!! One other thing that bothers me is that McCain/Palin always criticizes Obama because he doesn't "stand up against his party." Why should he? The Democrats support universal health care, raising the minimum wage, rebuilding our infrastructure, bigger tax breaks for middle and lower income citizens, alternate energy tax credits, equal pay for equal work. All things Obama supports. Palin & McCain belong to the Republican Party, which no longer knows how to govern. Everybody needs to stand up to them. And really, McCain and Palin should be ashamed they only stood up to their party once or twice. The Republicans have blocked all the programs mentioned above. This is and others are nothing more than "made-up" argument and the press should call them out on it. But I doubt it!!!!

FYI ; HILLARY CLINTON IS BEING VETTED BY THE McCAIN CAMP FOR A POSSIBLE V.P. POSTION AND WITH ALL THE DISARRAY IN THE DEMOCRAT PARTY SHE IS LIKELY TO CHANGE PARTIES AFTER WHAT THE DEMS AND OBAMA HAVE DONE TO HER SHE WILL BE COME A INDEPENDANT AND HELP McCAIN WIN THE WHITE HOUSE AND ENACT SOME OF HER POLICIES SO THE COUNTRY WILL BE BETTER THAN ANYTHING OBAMA WOULD BE ABLE TO DO FOR IT !!

I sure hope not! I have seen these two together off camera and it is like oil and water... Plus, I have a personal dislike for her.

      • Posted By: Obama08andme @ 09/09/2008 4:39:03 PM

I think the biggest misconception is that Barack "owes" Hillary Clinton something. Yes, she also ran a historic campaign, but he isn't obligated to do anymore than give her respect for what she has accomplished. With all of the negative banter and comments she made about Barack why would he want someone as his V.P. who doesn't believe in him, his policies, or thinks he is competent enough to do the job. Hillary supporters get off it and come together and support our Dem. Nominee

Hmmm.. another stereo-typical painting of the South. Thanks for the insult Dickey. Yes, everywhere you go here we are just reenacting killing black folks and killing yankees. It's what we do in our spare time. We sit around drinking our sweet tea hoping for the return of the confederacy.

Progress is good thing and a requirement. Change is not. You portray us unwilling to change. True. Except, you paint that as a bad thing. Is it our opposition to "change" or are you really questioning why Southerners don't take to Obama, the "Messiah of the Mainstream"? Sure, you can find the racist in the crowd and provide your audience with an out-dated incorrect reason for this lack of change, but one that would be easily accepted thanks to years of articles like yours. Or you could come to the realization that the senator from Illinois is not our choice due to his policy beliefs, his actions and his character.

We still truly believe in the power of the people. We have faith in each other that we can accomplish and provide whatever we need for each other. Government, stick to the basics. Stop trying to provide us with a good life. We'll make that on our own. We believe in God. In personal responsibility. In family. Relativism is a foreign word here so keep it out. And we believe in consistency of values. We call that having character and a strong faith down here.

Actual we sit around discussing where the rest of the country took a wrong turn. When did working hard for success become a bad thing (wind-fall tax?). When did basing your beliefs on God provide you with a label of "right-wing ideologe

tnlassie, I'm a NC boy and I appreciate what you had to say about the South. Since graduating high school I've lived in the West, Midwest, and in Canada, and a lot of people just can't seem to understand us southerners at all (not that it's easy from outside, I'll grant that) and would like to paint us with a broad brush. I'd like to ask whether, given your comments on government and personal responsibility, if you've given the positions of Ron Paul a good look this year. If you want a return to something resembling your views on government, take a look at the Campaign for Liberty. Bye now

I'm white, grew up in Watts and spent years in the south as a kid. There is one simple problem here; the average white person has to come to grips with the reality of there being many blacks who are a lot smarter than them or anyone they know. Obama is smarter than me or anyone in my family (including the racists) and so what? I will proudly vote for him.

  • Posted By: TN Girl @ 09/08/2008 5:28:05 AM

I live in TN. The very region he's talking about and if you don't see what he sees, if you live here, then you aren't looking. I've found myself as a lonely 50 yr old white woman in a sea of racists my whole life. I had black friends who couldn't come to my house because their parents were afraid they would bring the crosses to my yard. I see my life long friends believing in all the crap the right wing is putting out on Barack to scare them off. I only pray the rest of the country is more open minded than my neighbors.

  • Posted By: TN Girl @ 09/08/2008 5:04:54 AM

As a TN girl, I read this story as I live it. I can't tell you how hard this election has been for me. I love Barack and can't understand my friends being so afraid of him. I am 50, not 20. I lived the same life they did, why do I see it so differently? My dad used to tell me that their blood was the same color as mine and that I could invite my black friends home for bday parties. They wouldn't come, afraid of the crosses they felt would appear if they did. I loved them as family, I still do. I guess I just thought everyone would have gotten over the racism by now, but they haven't. Out of all my friends, and they are all dems, except two, only two will vote for the greatest hope for this countries salvation since Kennedy. I'm so sad and afraid because I don't know if the rest of the country is any wiser. I pray they are. Three years ago I had 5 surgeries in 4 months, lost everything. My husband is an engineer. The counties around here have 10% unemployment. I just can't understand being afraid of a man with a sole like his. He was raised as a white man by white people, seems that would make the racists feel better.
