I find it ironic that that Bush ( and therefore Republicanism ) is so roundly condemned when in fact it was a Democrat ( LBJ ) that engineered the Gulf of Tonkin incident that brought us into the Vietnam War, as well as colluded with the Israelis to sink our OWN SHIP ( the U.S.S. Liberty ) in the Mediterranean as a pretext for invading Egypt. Fortunately a Soviet sub filmed our wonderful Israeli allies attacking the vessel, and our involvement was not expanded.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRZSzdQuOqM&feature=email

LBJ also passed the Immigration Act of 1965, which opened the US up to 3rd world immigration, and thus opened the floodgates for the creation of this Balkanized mess we have today. Whats going on is a LOT bigger that any vision, or interpretation of the "problems" presented to us by either party. Neither the Democrats nor Republicans are fundamentally different on any of the issues that matter. Poor racial relations in the United States is control mechanism, and a distraction, designed to keep everyone perpetually off balance and not paying attention to whats REALLY going on. It doesn't matter if Obama or McCain wins: they've both put on the yarmelke and made the only commitment that matters in US politics. As the late George Carlin put it, we have only the ILLUSION of choice. We don't have leaders, we have owners, and all this controversial crap about race is a sideshow to keep our eyes off the people pulling the strings and going to the bank every day. When this country finally runs its course and our fiat dollar falls flat, they'll engineer a new currency and start the process all over, but only after they've repossessed your home and anything else you own. This isn't about nation building. They don't want people to get ahead. They don't care about culture. Its about conscripting your labor, ad infinitum, over time, and leveraging the American military machine ( and lives ) when it suits them. These individuals just need to hope, pray and endeavor to ensure that by the time the next economic upheaval occurs, be it a dollar default or otherwise, that white identity is completely destroyed. We all remember how Weimar Germany reacted to the situation, so its a PRIORITY now, that when the bank comes for your home, DO NOT ALLOW PEOPLE TO ANALYZE THE PROBLEM. Do NOT allow people to understand central banking. CONVINCE people that its NORMAL to borrow phenomenal sums of money at-interest from the banks, and BLEED away the nations wealth and treasure piecemeal over time to international interests. This is what we're up against. Enjoy your "south" bashing.

I too believe that Obama is way too liberal. I am all about equality but not at the expense of what this country was founded on, our religious beliefs. One Nation Under GOD! We've pulled prayer from our schools, removed the Ten Commandments from our walls, and can no longer offer any public moral teachings to our children. Today, it's all about political correctness and tolerance. Well, as both a Christian and an American, my beliefs remain based in the word of God. It's all printed in black and white. We may not like all that we read and all that we hear but as Christians it's the way we should live our lives. Murder is wrong, stealing is wrong, abortion is wrong, homosexuality is wrong, and on and on. This country needs a leader that has strong moral beliefs, vast experience in politics, and the will to fight the tough battles and to make this country stronger then ever. Obama fills none of the qualifications I'm looking for in the presidency. Maybe with another 15 yrs in politics, a change in his moral leadership, and a known platform he'll get there.

Modern Christians need to WAKE UP, and realize that many churches ( especially the Catholic Church ) operates as a BUSINESS determined to seize market share from other churches. Since whites stopped reproducing, they've resorted to a pro-illegal alien stance to expand their membership. In this respect, the church currently works as an ENABLER in the destruction of the West. Maybe we ought to be thinking about how to build a sustainable, harmonious society and whether the "melting pot theory" can actually WORK, despite every multi-cultural society in HISTORY being a misrable failure. America is just going to be the latest and greatest example of How One Does Not Build a Country.

I agree with you. First we've got to get rid of all those people whose names have "stein" in them don't we. The last guy to suggest that was....what was his name - you know, the guy you identify with - 'cause you have researched this over the years and have determined that only whites should populate the country - certainly not the "steins"..... so do you really have one of those funny black mustaches, and do you have an urge to raise your arm every time you hear a band play? Or do you just have a thing for crematoriums.

People can disagree about something without "hating" one another, but one can't advocate a hateful position and then expect not to be called a hater. Sorry, you can't use that bit of illogic as cover.. And I know it might be difficult for some of you who never get out of ???red??? country to comprehend, but in blue counties and states, liberal people go to church and temple too! In fact liberal people go to church in red counties and states as well! Right under your noses! That is when they're not getting massacred for their liberal views like in Tennessee this past week. Of course, it's liberals who are the haters, right? What a joke!

Idiot liberal journalists dont know any more about the south than they do about fornicating. This is just another not-so-hidden-agenda crap article from a "journalistic" reporter which slathers left wing ideology under the pretext of enlightenment. Go back home boy. Your yellow liberal streak is showing.

When the Confederate congress met in Charleston before the Civil War, the leaders talked about defending their land, their states, and their values against the Yankee peril. There was little or no talk about the thousands of inevitable deaths and the millions of dollars of destruction. In the end the South was emasculated and humiliated, which has lead to resentments that exists to this day.
The ???conservative??? Republicans have resurrected a similar marketing pitch on the South. The new mantra is low taxes, protect against ???liberal??? values, and support ???traditional family values.??? The Republicans have been remarkably successful. But it is a flim flam.
According to the Congressional Budget Office, the 3 presidents that have run up the highest Federal deficits are Reagan, George Bush 1, and George Bush 2, all Republicans. Dr. Lawrence Kotlikoff and William Walker have independently estimated the future National Debt at around $60 Trillion by 2030. The Republicans lower taxes now so our children and grandchildren will pay much higher taxes in the future. This is not fiscally conservative. Republican leaders are pandering to insecurities and fears created 150 years ago. The result could be worse than before.

Every $1 California sends to Congress, it gets 60 cents back to fund state expenses. Every $1 the South sends, it gets $1.40 back. Given California is providing welfare to the South, why should we be bound by the South's electing stupid Republicans? The dumb, lazy, backward South should be taking orders from us in California - we pay their bills!

    • Posted By: justthefactsma'am @ 08/05/2008 1:50:28 AM

Yea and what about CALIFORNIAN'S states rights, if we decide we want medical marijuana for example. We get DEA jackboots, that's what.

      • Posted By: bamapride @ 08/05/2008 2:24:43 AM

Yeah, I just read an article about how the state of California is on the brink of recession.. and how last year Alabama had the best economic year since the 1940s with almost $7 billion in new investments in our state. I guess we have California's .40 contribution to our welfare system to thank for that. So... thanks!

I've been a Southern all my life. People think we are slow and maybe we are. But I'll quick enough to catch the biased Liberal slant on this article. What a waste or space and my time.

    • Posted By: stephenprestwood @ 08/04/2008 10:33:15 PM

Every article that doesn't support your world view is not necessarily biased. Have the courage to look at your self honestly and acknowledge the sins that have been committed against others through hatred and prejudice. Let go of the anger. I'm a White Southerner who doesn't feel the need to defend the horrors of the Civil War or 100 years of Jim Crow and segregation. I don't need to be proud of a "heritage" filled with inhumanity and injustice. Find your identity in redemption and rectitude. How many more generations of Southerners will have to suffer for the immorality of our forefathers?

      • Posted By: bamapride @ 08/05/2008 2:16:06 AM

stephenprestwood, Your comments are hilarious! I have been laughing all night at your posts. Keep it up!

  • Posted By: audile degree @ 08/05/2008 1:55:45 AM

I am a native North Caolinian. I grew up in a segregated environment and have watched that environment virtually, but not completely, disappear. I have many friends in my retirement and attend many group meetings. When the question comes up, I find I am usually the only NC native present.
Yet most of the people in these groups make it clear they are both socially conservative and politically Republican leaning. The piece by Dickey may have reflected the conservative thinking of native southerners, but why are there so many "out of towners" seem to feel the same way?

  • Posted By: girlfriday1 @ 08/04/2008 7:28:41 PM

Barack Obama was not raised a Christian. His mother was an athiest, and they did not attend any church regularly. This information comes directly from Obama's autobiography.

    • Posted By: justthefactsma'am @ 08/05/2008 1:53:12 AM

Hitler was raised Catholic. What's you point?

    • Posted By: raddave @ 08/05/2008 12:00:07 AM

Obama described his mother as being agnostic, saying she believed in a higher power, not in any particular religion.

      • Posted By: raddave @ 08/05/2008 12:03:16 AM

BTW Obama was raised by his Grandparents from the age of 10 and they were Christian.

  • Posted By: ted_hu @ 08/05/2008 1:03:02 AM

it astounds me that y'all are reading newsweek online yet spewing falsehoods.
obama has sworn on the bible. it's online in video. same for being a christian.

the fact that he had a minister who had 20 seconds of his life recorded and replayed over and again doesn't mean much when we've all said 20 seconds of stuff publicly that we've regret. not to mention mccain's support for right-wing end of days nutjob hagee who hates catholics and like pat robertson thinks heathens and gays are what cause hurricanes, and throw aside science while taking advantage of it to spew putrid hate over airwaves based on our mastery of physics over electrons.

let's stick with the facts, which is more than obama is a 'smart' guy. it's that the past 8 years have been a total measurable disaster that has brought this country to its knees. and we can't afford another 4 years of it.

    • Posted By: jblackwell88 @ 08/05/2008 1:23:39 AM

Thats right. Bush is a failure. We need a REAL Republican that will actually reduce the size of government, limit our interventionism abroad, and control illegal immigration. McCain doesn't fit the bill, but certainly Obama doesn't either.

BLAH BLAH BLAH-Another media article written to inflame-Do you think the thought processes cited in this article permeate only the south? I was a white kid in Harlem working in a clinic and was spat on, called every name in the book, threatened and told to leave the neighborhood because I wasn't the right color. i could diagnose and treat your mother for her medical problem, I just couldn't walk the streets in safety. Everyone has to be held accountable, not just those racist "white folks". The only racist here is the author.

    • Posted By: jblackwell88 @ 08/05/2008 1:05:16 AM

You are probably unique if the abuse you received did not cultivate a predisposition against those persecuting you. Most people who determine that red snakes bite, stop picking up red snakes. For the sake of maintaining harmony in this giant market we call the USA, we are all programmed to suspend our use of stereotypes, despite their usefulness, when it comes to human beings. So congratulations... I guess... for taking the higher road, letting them spit on you. Maybe one day they'll buy into the PC program. I guess the best we can hope for is to demolish our own white identities and HOPE non-whites are foolish enough to follow our lead. Personally, I kinda see political correctness as a white man's delusion. I don't think non-whites buy into it, but they're content to play along since they benefit. Why stop the white man from consigning himself to extinction? Saves them the trouble.

  • Posted By: JMTann @ 08/05/2008 12:40:14 AM

I am an 18-year-old white male from Gainesville, GA, and honestly, I am very offended by this article. I had to forced myself to finish reading it. Just about everything this man says about the South???s mindset is bull. The places the author mentions are the worst are small rural areas. Go to any rural area in America, North, South, East or West and you will still find old, backwards thinking mindsets. They???re always going to be those few people out there that continue things such as racism, but most of those few are old crabby men that are gonna die of old age soon. The South that I have seen and lived in everyday of my live is nothing like the one this man has portrayed in his article. The South I live in doesn???t remember the Civil War as anything more that something everybody was forced to learn about in 8th grade history class. And as far as race is concerned, my high school was about 40% white, 30% Hispanic, 20% black, and 10% other, and do you know how many race related issues happened over the years at that school???. NONE. The surrounding schools???. NONE. I went to my senior prom with a very good friend of mine, she was black, but that did not stop me. The whole night, no one stared, no one gossiped, infact, we were not the only mixed couple there. Skin color means nothing to me nor to any of the 200 odd people from my graduating class, we were all seniors ???08 and that???s what unified us. And I have seen this same mind set mirrored at not just schools, but everywhere in Georgia. Maybe it isn???t the South???s mindset that needs to change? Maybe it is the Northern mindset of the South that is the one that needs to be changed? I have read other articles similar to this, one where the subject is about how the South hasn???t changed much. So, just because I am a southern white male, does that make me a racist? If you answered yes, like this article and others would have you believe, then I???ll see you in court, because that is a negative stereotype and racist comment.

JMTann, after reading the article I said to myself, I wonder how the southerners feel about these comments in this article cuz if i was Southern, which I am not, I would be offended. It is good to hear from you , sharing your experience as to what the real deal is down in the south where you live. : - )

  • Posted By: Muns47 @ 08/04/2008 2:37:25 PM

Southern roots with racial prejudices run deep, and I do not believe that Sen. Obama's candidacy will change that. I do not believe that white southerners who in the hearts believe that they are not racially biased against African Americans, can or will vote for Sen. Obama - we have not come that far yet!

    • Posted By: southern-sweettea @ 08/04/2008 2:50:03 PM

So...I'm a white 21-year-old female from South Carolina, and some of my best friends are African American...just wanted to throw that in. And yes, I'm supporting John McCain :)

      • Posted By: raddave @ 08/04/2008 2:58:15 PM

Your comment stating that some of your best friends are african american could be construed as racist. Its the same thing my granmother said when saying that she was not racist and then she would turn around and us the "n" word in the next sentance.

        • Posted By: southern-sweettea @ 08/04/2008 3:19:56 PM

What kind of logic is that?
So would it make you feel better if I said that some of my best friends were Caucasian. Then, maybe you could infer that I had some friends who were not Caucasian...because I only said that SOME of them were...so then maybe you could deduce from that that I do in fact have friends that are Hispanic, Native American, African American, or anybody else you want to throw in there.
I just thought I would make it simple for simple people like you :)

          • Posted By: raddave @ 08/04/2008 5:09:46 PM

Why do you have to break your friends down by their race or the color of their skin?

            • Posted By: southern-sweettea @ 08/04/2008 5:16:48 PM

To make a point that I'm friends with more than just individuals from one race, and to say that I have no problem with any other race of people even though I'm southern born and bread (and one-half Native American if I might add). Simple as that. Any more weird questions?

              • Posted By: raddave @ 08/04/2008 5:28:48 PM

while you might have black, asian, white or Indian friends. I have friends.

                  I'm really surprised at that.
Anyhow, the post that I was replying to stated that southerners were biased against African Americans. Obviously, if I have good friends from a certain race, I am not biased against that race. I know you probably still don't get it, but that's just how it is.

southern-sweettea I apologize for the above post. It was inappropriate. I see that you did not say "You people" but in fact said "You probably." I do not think you are racist. But I think America will never get beyond its prejudices until we can look beyond the color of a person's skin, look beyond someones "funny sounding" name. I was trying to point out that your comments could be construed as racist. My Grandmother, on the other hand was racist. Do I lover her any less because of it? No, she was my granny and she grew up in an era very different from the one I grew up in.

        • Posted By: southern-sweettea @ 08/04/2008 3:23:31 PM

As a person from the south I have heard many times, things like "I have nothing against black people, I have plenty of black friends. or "Some of my best friends are black." Like it is some big accomplishment that you have BLACK friends.

Slavery ended 143 years ago.If after 143 years the only accomplishment we can say is that we have black friends, then the south really is as bad as Northerners believe we are.

  • Posted By: tesconsult @ 08/05/2008 12:37:21 AM

Taken as whole, the accumulated "member comments" on Chris Dickey's article [whether from the right, left, or just lost] are mean-spirited, pathetic, and frighteningly sad. Perhaps it is too audacious to hope that we Americans, of whatever race, region, generation or experience, could find a place to stand together. And, if we have to, start over from the very beginning. Many of us Baby Boomers who saw our heroes assassinated and our friends wasted in Viet Nam have been waiting for another chance for this country--a chance to dare the "risky" choice. Robert Frost said it best: "[Take] the road less traveled; it [will make] all the difference."

  • Posted By: WhiteBuffalo @ 08/05/2008 12:35:17 AM

First of all, cut the crap about the war. What that has to do with the change in the south is at most a buffoon suggestion. So, I havn't read further. Why, when the table has been set, and the bill is presented with out anybody getting fed. Nice preamble.

  • Posted By: raddave @ 08/05/2008 12:34:13 AM

My dad once explained the difference in racism between the south and the north. He said in the south, southern whites will like a black person as an individual, but hate blacks as a race. Northerners, on the other hand, like blacks as a race, but hates them as individuals.
