"Southerners, said Black, really do not like being told what they ought to want."
Nope, they are just too busy preaching to everyone else what they should believe. Bunck of crackers!
"Southerners, said Black, really do not like being told what they ought to want."
Nope, they are just too busy preaching to everyone else what they should believe. Bunck of crackers!
Well well well... what we have here is an interesting kettle of fish. Is there strictly a problem for whites with the idea of a black president or is it this particular man as president?
For instance, let's say it was a conservative black politician like JC Watts. I would not and will not vote vote for a socialist liberal elitist like Barack Hussein Obama but I would vote for JC Watts in a heartbeat! Okay? And I bet you a million dollars there are a whole lotta white folks like me that would do the same. I am not even from the south. I am from Philly originally. The last thing I want to hear about is how we need to "slice up the economic pie" as Mr. B Hussein Obama likes to say. That is the issue more than race although race comes into it. Let's face it, the black community in America would vote for Obama even if he was a serial killer and that is not an exaggeration. I bet you they would vote for OJ Simpson if he ran! The problem is not with white Americans and white racism it is actually the opposite. Blacks are following the color of the candidates skin and they do not really care about the issues. It is simply "let's get one of us in the Oval office".
Well I must say this probably the most ignorant comment I have expected to read so far. Hopefully yours makes the top of the list. Your comment suggest that African-American are a non-driven bunch that will swallow any vomit that is put in front of them. I think you ought to be ashame of yourself. Race is not the issue here, I think what is eating you inside is the fact that republicans cannot use race and scare tactics as they have in the past because they media and the public would be all over it contrary to the past. Very sad my friend; here is a line from your beloved candidate whom I hope you do vote; because at the end of the day you are probably one of those who does cling to guns when the walls are closing in on you. That's right I said it! You are uneducated and that's probably all you have; hahaha ;-)
Can you say Marion Barry?
Well put. I am a conservative from the south and would love the opportunity to vote for Mr. Watts. I cannot vote Obama because I'm afraid it would lead to more entitlement programs and believe me in New Orleans we already have enough. I would also like some reporter to ask his stand on reparations. He sure is staying clear off that issue.
Since you have not been paying attention, Obama said he was against reparation. But I guess even if he mailed you a tape with him spelling it out for you, you still would not hear him or maybe even suggest that he was speaking arabic. Very sad indeed.
Yeah he said he was against reparations and he was also against offshore drilling until he changed his mind in a millisecond. Sorry Shmoe but you're not keeping up quick enough. Your candidate is disintegrating before your eyes as his true lack of character comes to light. Even the Media can't protect a liar from tripping over his own BS.
Why don't you actually read the change into why he had a change in heart. Not all candidates or presidents for that matter are good because they never ever change their minds even in the light of different evidence (see 'hold the course')
Your last lines point to a desperation to end this argument that you have dug for yourself. We're all countrymen here, so no need to sink to tht. I'm not going to personally attack you (much at least) but lose this point and try another.
This was a SCARY change of heart, by Obama
OBAMA SAYS: Dont tell me words dont matter!
OBAMA WORDS: Iran, Cuba, Venezuela -- these countries are TINY compared to the Soviet Union. They DONT pose a serious threat to us!
TWO Days later . . .
OBAMA WORDS: Iran is a GREAT threat! Iran is a GREAT threat (REALLY)! Iran is a GREAT threat (I AM NOT KIDDING HERE)!
WHAT does Obama really believe?? What are we supposed to think if he tells us words DO matter and he flip flops on such a major belief issue??.

This tired post of yours again? ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Good one. : - )
Let me let you in on a little secret: yours was an extrodinarily racist post.
It's okay if you don't care, though I'm just pointing it out; you started with some good points in the first 2 sentences, and then the hate just started spilling out.
I'm asian, so to be honest I'm not always crazy about black people (asians, as a stereotype, are afraid of black people). Nice racist statement from me (lol, against both asians and blacks apparently), and yet I would 100% still vote for Obama because he goes the opposite direction of someone like Bush, and actually speaks substance while others spread fear.
'Piece of the Pie'... why not? If it is possible for the country to become greater and great from the top to the bottom at the same time, why not? I'm doing well at 26 in Network Engineering, so am I poor right now? No, I'm not--and yet, I look to this country to become better than it has been, with a chance to change the tides fo the last 8 years. McCain is running the same campaign as Bush, and has the same absolutist stands. If anything, I fear him being president for all the evils we have ALREADY seen.
Mr. Rapidron, you're apparently pretentious and racist where I am neither. Thanks for "letting me in on a little secret" what rubbish! Regarding the "peice of the pie and why not, because the redistribution of wealth attempted by socialist like B. Hussein Obama will never ever effect the truly wealthy. They are well protected by offshore instruments, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan and UBS and multitudes of things that the wealthy can afford to do to keep their wealth. You are ignorant. Obama doesn't want their money because he'll never be able to get it anyway. He wants your money if you're a middle class or entrprenuer trying to make it to the top. But you have a problem because you're another one of those guys that thinks he is smarter than everyone. kind of like the economics professor that is eternally broke. You said my comments were racist because why? They point out that black voters are supporting a black candidate? Is this not the truth? 92 percent so far!
Lol, Jkyacht called me racist and pretentious... so very ironically black you are, 'pot'...
Lol, what a heaving mess of insults. Your comments are racist because we can easily see how you seeth to enforce that blacks only want to vote for Obama because he's black, questioning the intelligence of Black people to the point of sheep. I didn't want to have to spell it out, but it's simple.
No, I don't think I'm smarter than anyone, but if there's a point to be made on something written that is pretty lame, I will do it. Quite a hypocritical statment of yours to be made though.
Although I did not say I was smarter than everyone, your post demonstrates to me that I have some credibility there and it is a threat to you, so thank you very much--you've made my day =)
You forget that when Al Sharpton ran for president back in 2004 he never got more than 25% of the Black vote whereever he ran. The other 75% went to Edwards and Kerry in that primary.
OK. I get it now. The big difference is that republicans would rather pay taxes towards helping corporations and big oil. Democrats want to pay taxes so that children can get educated with current materials and books; so that our bridges can be inspected; so that our FOOD can be inspected. But I guess that's big government. The repubs would rather help the corporations, like our government currently gives Wal-mart money to open stores that put mom and pop out of business all over this country. And it's OK to bail out the companies whose CEO's end up with a slap on the wrist for STEALING people's retirement funds. That's OK. But, BY GOD, I don't want to pay .15 cents a week for the homeless and dirt poor children to be able to have breakfast, probably their only meal of the day, at school. That's big government! We can't help the individuals who are poor, just the corporations who are rich. Yah! Makes a ton of sense.
Well said...I was wondering why I can't seem to date asian women. LOL
Well I must say this probably the most ignorant comment I have expected to read so far. Hopefully yours makes the top of the list. Your comment suggest that African-American are a non-driven bunch that will swallow any vomit that is put in front of them. I think you ought to be ashame of yourself. That's right I said it! You are uneducated and that's probably all you have; hahaha ;-)
Really? I am uneducated? And you can say that based on what? Because I stated what I percieve as the truth. But you don't like it so you attack me personally instead of actually making a point. So besides bashing a complete stranger you know nothing about, what is your point or better yet reason for being?
Your writing.
You are sick in the head and need help immediately...
No, the Black community does NOT vote for Obama because he is Black. It is true that Blacks overwhelmingly vote Democratic and against Republicans. Black people generally don't vote for Black republicans either.
Republicans have tried that trick on and off over the years, running a Black candidate in majority Black areas to try and gain the territory. They get trounced by the (often White) Democrat every time.
So my friend, by writing this piece of drivel are you saying that you would vote for Charles Manson (because he's white) before you'd vote for Barack Obama?
Newsflash to everyone who uses Hillary as an argument as to why "Hussein" should be used...
Rodham is her MAIDEN name, not her middle name. And she USES her maiden name, as do many women.
Her middle name is DIANE.
When was the last time you heard the media call McCain "Sidney"?????
the GOP and Fox News use his middle name to perpetuate a stigma, period.
Anyone who argues otherwise is either incredibly stupid or incredibly malicious.
This, and the whole "we can't question Obama without being called racist!" arguments are ridiculous.
With the exception of a couple of comments about inexperience and oil, no one in here is questioning Obama about THE ISSUES. I keep reading "he's a Muslim! he's a Muslim!"
THAT will probably get a racist accusation, as it's been overwhelmingly proven to be FALSE.
"Muslim" is apprently the nifty new substitute for N*****.
How about questioning the issues? You'd be less apt to get pegged as racist...
I would like to know where people see the "Hes a Muslim" stories. I read a variety of news stories daily and I don't see these comments. Actually, that's not true. I see them in comment sections from liberals that whine about it.
His name. That is enough to convince some people no matter what Obama says. I saw some news coverage a few days back and you wouldnt believe how many still think he is Muslim. So yeah, it is his name.
So he should change his name?
If not his name you'd think of some other ridiculous excuse to disparage Sen. Obama. You're boring. Move on.
Just look at UNHolyRollers comments
You're under a rock, my friend.
how about the incessant propaganda emails, perhaps?
who's worse- the people originating the lies, or the ones who blindly believe it, not because it's true, but because they WANT to believe it?
To say that racism is "ignorance" is merely a slander against someone with a different viewpoint.
Racism is not "taught". This is a myth. It is learned directly through negative experiences with the racial "other" and in direct observation of group behavior. PROXIMITY causes racism. Factual reporting causes racism. There are no secret sessions in the southern white family where this stuff is handed down.
Not everyone who is racist is "ignorant" or uneducated, but for those who are, it is simply a natural conclusion they can draw from their life experiences without having to crack open a book. My wife is from Europe, and there wasn't a racist bone in her body, but after having lived in the South for 10 years, she knows now that blacks hate her, that she OWES them, and that she is responsible for everything thats ever happen to them in antiquity, and is expected to subsidize them through her taxes. She knows from experience who WORKS in her store and she also knows from experience which customers STEAL. Had she stayed in Europe, maybe she would have had the luxury of entertaining this fanciful liberal notion that all people are created equal, much like the white liberals in uniformly white New England, but reality got in the way.
The only way to eliminate racism is to fund extensive reprogramming via our public school system INDEFINITELY and hope that we'll turn out citizens who are willing to ignore their own observations and accept the PC line. Just a hunch, but racism will never go away. WHITE people will go away, but racism will not. Once all the white people are gone, the mestizos and blacks will duke it out. There will be no great white government left to try to balance the racial powder-keg, and ethnocentric interests will take the lead once again. So I think this where we're headed. Political correctness isn't about the future. Its an ideological trojan horse designed to offset white affluence until non-whites can perform their coup de grace, Mugabe style. That might be the most racist thing you've ever heard, but I'm sure a LOT of whites are thinking about what it might be like to be 70 years old in a nursing home when the inheritors of our country decide to "collect" against centuries of perceived grievances.
As one who was born and raised in the north and recently moved into the south, I must say it is an EXPERIENCE. The natives here seem NOT to want to progress. Their religion is "we've always done it that way". Whatever that means!!! They will go to a medical provider's office JUST AS THEY ARE. How is that? If they were plowing a field, they will alight from the tractor or leave from behind a mule/horse and "GO AS THEY ARE". How frightening that is for obviously they HAVE TO know what GERMS are. To walk into a physician's office WITHOUT showering/bathing is unheard of. After all, what would prompt you to be SO unmindful of the health of others. Not to mention the odor. I elect not to mention the driving habits; TIME NOR SPACE IN THIS PANEL WILL NOT PERMIT IT. And, the south will rise again? Right, the VERY last day man occupies earth!
You are what we Southerns call A DAMN YANKEE. Go back home if you don't like it. We didn't invite you down here to begin with. You are a GERM and a CANCER. Go back North and take your any friends and relatives that came with you.
You dumb ***
What a brilliant comment from such an "intellectual giant."
I beg to differ from you. In some areas of New England life seems hopelessly backward compared to the South. I realize that you are "sophisticated" and you think only ignorance comes from the South, but drive in the countryside in other regions of the country and I think that you will notice a backward slow pace in those places as well.
As one of our great Souther statesman (Lewis Grizzard) said, "Delta is ready when you are" and I75 runs north and south......Yankee, if you don't like the South, GO HOME!!!!! We were doing just fine before you got here.....................Lablady 1944
Just another article about Obama. Blacks are proving themselves to be the racists with this election. There are black people that want to vote for Obama because he's black and no oine is pointing this out. It's ok for people to do that. Can you imagine a story written about groups of whites voting for McCain because he's white? It's ridiculous. Vote on the issues, not the skin color. I would never vote for Obama or Hillary because they are the most liberal minded people out there. The're practically communists who stand for special interests like gay marriage. I don't care what color you are, you aren't getting my vote.
You want to vote for a black man? Vote for Alan Keys!
This racism will NEVER cease as long as it is taught to our children. Because of the media and this election, that means that we now have to wait for a whole new generation before we will see the exodous of racism..... the youngest generation has already been taught to think in terms of black and white.
Blacks are voting for Obama, not because he is black, but because he is a democrat. Democrats in recent history have always received the vast majority of the black vote.
Alan Keys is not running. Who would vote for that misguided, out of touch, forgot where he came from conservative zombie anyway.
I just moved back home to Texas after living for the last 9 years in Michigan. If anyone thinks that there is prejudice and bigotry here they need to go back home and take a look around. I was constantly being questioned why I bought a home in Bloomfiield Hills which is "jewish", not to drive in Pontiac, MI which is "black" and every person I met was more interested in my racial make-up than what I did for a living. I have never seen people that were so worried about what their neighbors were doing and what was their religion. At my son's graduation my husband's family (who are all Michiganders) were surprised that his best friends were black and caldean. I always taught my son, as any upstanding Texan does, that it is not the color of the skin, not the language they speak, not their sexual preferences nor the choice of religion that should make you like or dislike a person, it is their HEART and they way they treat others. I get really tired of people saying the south is bigoted when I saw firsthand the segregated neighborhoods of the north. I have friends that are black, brown, yellow and white, I have friends that are gay and every religion that you can name but the one thing we all have in common is that we treat each other with respect. We respect each others views even when we don't agree with them. We appreciate the differences because we can learn from each other. I have lived all over the state of Texas and most people here just want people to be truthful, respectful and tolerant. We dislike stupidity (even if they have a degree), we hate to be treated like we are stupid and the main thing is we don't like it when people try to come here and label us as bigots when there are just as many if not more where they came from. If Obama doesn't win the south it will probably be because for someone who is constantly saying he doesn't want race to be an issue his campaign always brings it up, also why does he have to speak of himself in the third person??? Can't he just be himself and quit trying to act like even he is quoting himself or what others think of him?? Learn how many states we really have and quit coming up with additional things he wants the federal government to take over and he might have a chance. The biggest thing we like down here is to have our state laws govern us not the federal government and he might have a real chance. No one here cares what the color of his skin is it's what is coming out of his mouth that has everyone wondering who he is really and what does he really think he can accomplish as a president. Not everyone is a Bush fan but at least you know exactly what you get with him whether you like it or not and that can be respected here.
As a "Northerner" who lived in the Atlanta area for 30 years before relocating to the Philadelphia area, I find this article both insulting and misleading! I believe that anyone who travels across this country can find alot of people that are just plain misinformed or eccentric in some way or other. To paint an entire region as being paranoid of an African-American becoming president is intellectually dishonest. It does suggest to me though that Mr. Dickey has some serious genectically flawed relatives who he seems to project upon the Southern population at large! Why is it that people north of the Mason Dixon line seem to obsess over what they think people in the south are like. If I were to write an article about some of the "characters" I've met these past five years in Philadelphia and suggested that everyone up here were of the same persuasion it would be a caricature of a place. Please- spare thinking people your trite conclusions about some of the wackos you've met in the south and in your own family Mr. Dickey! Finally, does it occur to any of you on the staff of Newsweek that most people would have no problem voting for an African-American for President if he or she were more qualified and experienced for the job than Mr. Obama? I'm afraid your "Regional Prejudice" is showing Newsweek! Again! Terry Weyant, Philadelphia
Thank you for a well written post. I agree with you that the South is not just a bunch of ignorant rubes. Also, many people have no problem with Obama's race. They do have a problem with his leftist politics.
If you have not seen this article, you might want to read it. It is very well written and informative. It provides readers with some insight into Barack Obamas early political career. The time between his first campaign for the Illinois State Senate in 1995 and his race for U.S. Senate in 2004, which can fairly be called the LOST YEARS, the span of years that you never hear Obama talk much about. It will make you open your eyes to wondering what else we don???t know about this man.

Sallie J: Look you ask anyone, down the coast. And I dont mean people that come visit Bourbon St. New Orleans before Katrina was a hell hole. It was one of the worst cities I have ever been too. In fact, I still dont go there except for work when I have too. The other small cities around New Orleans they did pick themselves up. However, that doesnt get written about. New Orleans "was" still is in some places the dirtiest, uneducated, crime ridden town you have ever seen. Great place to get a drink. It was sad what happened. But people down here in the South chuckled when people in large liberal cities had no idea what they were talking about. Trust me if anyone had been here its a place you would not want to live in or stop at.
Bullshit. New Orleans is rising. It likely will never be a "powerhouse" of anything, but the quality of life is very good here for hard-working, succesful individuals. You are sadly mistaken about not wanting to stop or live here......so perhaps you should just stay away. We don't really need you here anyhow.
I kinda hope Obama wins, but only because I think he'll monkey-wrench the entire system. The only "change" I'm optimistic about is outside the purview of "acceptable" political discourse. This country is going down the hole fast, neither candidate can fix it, so might as well put the black man at the head of the bus just in time to hit the curb. But then again, an Obama loss would result in riots, so I'm not sure which scenario is going to be more fun.
southernbornraised, to late for that thought....we had a white fella who decided to blow up a federal building and kill 168 people (1 my cousin and 2 former coworkers) and the first recorded f5 tornado (May 3, 1998)which made lunch out of my neighborhood and many many others. By the time FEDS or anyone else (except for the press) got here we were looking for bodies. The outpouring of offered help from many states was marvelous but we did not ask for help. It was volunteered. Also I was not making reference to ALA. Your suffering did not fill up the headlines as did New Orleans. Possibly because ALA was busy doing something about your state. Which is beautiful by the way.
As a New Orleanian I must comment on New Orleans filling up the headlines after Katrina. The liberal media choose to fill up the headlines because it showed minority people that appeared to be dying because they were left to fend for themselves. What actually happened is that most working people of the city, black and white, got out of the city, came back and rebuilt using their own insurance proceeds that they bought and paid for themselves. I for one cringed everytime I saw some segment of the city looting liquor stores and burning shopping centers. These photos showed exactly what happens when people depend on the government to take care of them from the cradle to the grave. If Obama doesn't win the south, it won't be because hes black, its most people in the south don't want to depend on the government and Obama's entire campaign is based on more entitlements
Well put! I was there -- what you say is true. The vast majority of what you saw at the Superdome and Convention Center, as well as the looting and wanton destruction, is the direct result of an entitlement system out of control. Can't tell you how many times I have gotten on a plane, sat next to someone and had them tell me how sorry they feel for the poor people of New Orleans. These are the same folks that help perpetuate the crime and welfare state by re-electing turds like Nagin and William Jefferson, and will likely vote for Obama either out of racial solidarity or white guilt. How about Marion Berry in D.C.? White racism? Please.......that kettle is black!
If Americans reward the Republicans with another term after the disaster of the last 8 years then they pretty much deserve whatever they get. McCain is exactly like Bush in almost every way and almost certain to continue his failed economic and foreign policies. Wake up America!
On the other hand, suffering four years under the boot heel of Obama would leave America looking and functioning excatly like Haiti.
No, only if we are collectively stupid enough to elect another president from the Republican party will we end up getting poorer in every sense of the word. The Republicans don't know anything about running a government. They suck at it. Republican economic policy is not even grounded in good theory or science. That's why our economy is much worse under a Republican administration. Let's put some competent adults back in the White House and in appointed positions. Every Republican election loss in November is a tremendous step forward for the country and the world.
So I assume taxing the bajesus out of people who have built a business that offers employment for others is "good theory"
I am from the south and I could care less if a candidate is black, white, Asian, Latino, or any other race. And i believe that most southerners feel the same way. The thing that scare us is the fact that we have a candidate that half the country supports, however we know practically nothing about him. All that I have gathered from Obama's campaign is that he is the candidate for change. He has very limited credentials but is enjoying success by promising a frightened nation that he will change things and make them better. Obama may have the answers, but the way to change southerners minds about "change", is to quit throwing faulty numbers around and screaming change. In the 1930's, Germany was facing a terrible economy much worse than America has ever dreamed of , and a young man stepped into the spotlight promising change. In desperation the German people made the biggest mistake of their history.
Now America is not Germany, and i am in no way saying that Obama is Hitler, but the similarities are there. The only way for this election to be a success for the American people is for Americans to demand answers from both candidates and make a rational, educated decision based on what the candidates CAN do, not what they SAY they will do.
Sadly , as a lifelong southerner/Texan I will be very honest and say many whites are openly hateful and full of animosity towards non-whites down here. I hear and see it almost everyday. Many of the whites here blame everyone else for the problems of the country. The demographics of the country are changing and unfortunately the whites, who are in power, see the changes that come from the new demographics as a loss of power and culture. Obama has no chance of winning the presidency unless the groups that are notorious for not showing up, show up- latinos, young people, etc.. There are many democratic whites that will not vote for a black man. Honest assessment.
I'm from the south and we have a saying here: If you throw a rock into a pack of dogs, the one that yelps has been hit. Mr.. Dickey's words seem to have struck a few of us.
How do you know you're dealing with a racist? The premise of their view only holds up when you suspend the fact that racism still exists.
Mr.. Obama was busy inspiring millions both in the US and abroad while Mr. McCain was busy developing a strategy to hide the fact he doesn't read well. What if those facts were reversed? Harriet Christian would have been right.
Mr. Obama's cup will always be half empty in the south. Like a recipe handed down through generations it (pessimism towards blacks) is just the way we've been taught to see things. We will hate Mr. Obama no matter what he does. All we have left is to agree on how to justify it...and that's where southern talk radio, email and "private" conversations come in. The comments are, point for point, taken from southern talk radio where there is no standard to be accurate or fair. Points that have been debunked are repeated.
Racism: The South's Great Inside Joke.
So this is probably why Kerry and Gore didn't carry the south......it was only because they were black! And Clinton didn't do that well in the south and now we know why, it was because he was also black. So perhaps, if Democrats want to carry the south, they should stop nominating black canidates.....right? We all know people in the south base their every decision on race.....I'll bet they all buy white bread even. Shame on them there southerners.........we need to find a way to force them to buy only black bread.
So I knew it was coming, but this article demonstrates one fact so well. The media is going to try their best to make people believe that if you do not vote for Obama, then you are racist. Is it not possible for someone to think that he is not a good candidate without even looking at his race?
AMEN, AMEN, and AMEN!!!!!
Of course it is possible, but do not even begin to tell me that it is true for every single voter. Too be honest, I don't even think McCain is that terrible of a candidate. At least he isn't as conservative as most of the GOP wants him to be. Obama is also a little more liberal than I would like him to be. It's just a matter of whose views more closely align with my own.
I never thought McCain was a bad candidate, and had always respected him for being somewhat moderate.
It is the tactics and tone of his negative campaign that has since had me seeing that it's almost as if another 'Rove' had taken the wheell.
You must not been involved in following politics that long. McCains ads are hugely mild compared to old hard core knock 'em dead ads Republicans have created and released in the past. Unless the big guns will be coming out from him after the democratic national convention.
McCain's ads show how jealous he is of Obama.
I recommend that you and others read about the LOST YEARS that you never hear much about from Obama. It will explain how race fits into his campaign. It is a little lengthy but worth the read when you some time set aside. It only reinforces the real Obama that I think he is.
