Your article is spot on. I am Southern born and raised, a shrinking minority of white democrats, and I find your article gets directly to the pulse of MY South. Black and white, urban and exurban. I voted in my first presidential election in 1976, and I have not liked a single Presidential candidate, ever. Still don't.

As for adding a VP to the ticket, I think the perfect choice to compliment Obama as a running mate would be Marion Barry.

I never understood the Lincoln worship.

Lincoln clearly opposed racial equality on many occasions, such as during the August 21, 1858, debate in Ottawa, Illinois with Stephan Douglas, where he said: "I have no purpose to introduce political and social equality between the white and black races.... I, as well as Judge Douglas, am in favor of the race to which I belong having the superior position." Most Americans seem totally unfamiliar with this actual quotation, and many others just like it. They seem instead to be of the opinion that the following quotation is Lincoln???s real attitude on race: "The restoration of the Rebel States to the Union must rest upon the principle of civil and political equality of both races...." Again, there is no record anywhere of Lincoln ever having said this...

Intelligent Design - Robert E. Lee was praised and saluted by Northern Troops at the surrender. Lee could have engaged in further gorilla warfare with the help of Jeb Stewart and this would have cost more tens of thousands of lives. Lee was highly respected by all Northern Generals and cared for every American life as did Grant. He loved the South but loved The United States more so he surrendered. Truman bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki to save hundreds of thousands of lives. The Civil War was wrong and so was slavery and both North and South participated in it. The North baught or sold the slaves from tribes in Africa and sold them to the South to help plant and pick cotton. The South wanted to use cotton to buy machinery from Great Britain and slavery was the cheapest labor. The North would lose to the the South and have competition for the cotton. Lincoln with all his intelligence failed to save the union and sectioning of the states became the second reason for the war. Slavery was 6th or 7th on the list for starting the "War Between The States" (The Civil War). After the war slaves moved North for freedom and jobs only to find cold winters and cold people waiting in reception (no work). The slaves (free men) started the pilgrimage back home to the South. Over the years blacks found more civility and welcome homeness in the South than they ever found in the North. Perpetrating myths about poor and abusive treatment of blacks in the South has prolonged the healing between people of various socio-economic levels. The myth about Southerners being ignorant and the Northerners being educated and intellectual is harmful to the continuing healing of our "Perfect Union". We should all take lessons from Grant and Lee whereas Grant graciously accepted Lee's surrender thankful for not prolonging the war to what Grant considered an inevitable conclusion - the complete destruction of our union. We should work at continuing the efforts of Lee and Grant. Men do what they have to do to end wars and generations of people that follow are responsible for securing that peace.
I am sorry that the North won the battle only to lose the war (car industry and others migrating to the New South for cheaper wages and no unions) as the South is prospering as the North is dying. I am sorry the North is sorry. An intelligent deity would not have created tadpoles of different colors with different lips and gills so that they could eventually have sex with machines to create hybrid vehicles using less gas without the assistance of The GOD of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (this GOD - The Divine Architect of The Universe - the father of Jesus Christ) - just wouldn't do that. I'm from Mississippi and damned proud of so clean up your own inner city dumps before telling the South how to behave as you drive their to beg for employment as your homes are foreclosed.

This Article is absolutely absurd! The Author is so out of touch with the great Culture of the South. Where Patriotism, Religion, and Family Values are the strongest in the entire Nation. There are people who have problems in all four corners of the nation. But in the South, we take better care of our own (both black and white) than anywhere else in the nation.. Why don't you take a stroll through Watts, Harlem and the inner cities of Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, etc. There has always been misconceptions about Southerners, from those up North, who would rather look South than over there own shoulders in their own back yard.
Take another stroll, without your bias and prejudices, and enjoy our Southern Hospitality. Steve Chambers, Birmingham Alabama

I was born in Mobile Alabama in 1946 and I have lived in Ga, Tenn, La And Texas.I served in the United States Navy from 1963-67.In 1968 I voted for George Wallace and when he ran for President I voted for him also(help elected richard nixon) but times have changed in the south and in America. This year I will vote for Obama...my how times have changed...i feel close to McCain because he was a Navy man like me...but I just don't think America can take 4 more years of bush type government....McCain says he is a maverick he voted with bush 95% of the time and I don't think America can stand 4 more years of that...never thought I would but its Obama for me.

Why McCain Wouldn't Be Bush III (Sorry, Barack)
      Andrew Romano

      EXCERPT:

Yes, McCain is a Republican. Yes, he--like Bush--has Republican positions. And yes, you should vote against him if you disagree with the Republican Party on the issues. My only point here is that McCain, based on his bipartisan past, is probably one of the Republicans least likely to govern like Bush--and thus least deserving of the inevitable "Bush III" label. None of this is to say that McCain would be a perfect president, or even a good one. I'll let the voters decide that. Maybe you think he's too old. Maybe you think he's too conservative. Maybe you think he's squandered his honor for political gain. Maybe you just like Obama better. Any reason is fine, as long, that is, as the crucial comparison is between Obama and McCain--their policies, their personalities and the problems they'll face as president--and not between Obama and Bush. Because even though 43 has done some preposterous things during his time in the White House, he's not defying the Twenty-Second Amendment to run for a third term--despite what Obama says.

Everyone is just attacking everyone here. All this does is inspire people to attack your belief. They say you vote for who is most like you. I am a white 33 year old woman, born and raised in Las Vegas to a middle class family. My parents are still married. My mother stopped working before I was born and never went back. I am so much more like Barack Obama than I am like John McCain - as weird as that sounds.

The other thing that motivates people to vote is fear, the less educated you are the more fearful of change you are. I can understand why so many, especially in the South, are afraid of Obama. I think it's ridiculous, but I can understand it. Remember the red and blue map after the 2004 election? The fact was,and still is, that the more educated you are, the more liberal and open minded you are. The less educated you are, the more conservative and fearfully closed minded you are. Which group do you identify with? Which candidte are you more like? I emplore all of you to look up the simple definitions of liberal and conservative in your dictionary. Which one is better for America's future? Remember we're in the new millenium, not 1950.

    • Posted By: grannyqx4 @ 08/04/2008 3:47:31 PM

No, it isn't 1950 anymore, Thanks God! I do consider myself a conservative and not because of any lack of education - thank you very much! As ready as I am to see change in government (any responsible and experienced non-white or non male would be really nice to see), the kind of change is very important in these times. Obama talks nice, but his inexperience and "slickness" really worry me. I just don't think he is seasoned enough to take on the job yet. McCain would probably not be my ideal choice either, but he does know his way around world politics and doesn't need a lot of media frenzy to point it out. He is just more experienced than Obama. America will see a day of a person of color in the White House, but I sincerely hope for all of our sakes that it is not in this election!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA !!!! This is the most hilarious thing I've ever heard!! Yeah, I'm getting ready to graduate from nursing school, and I've been inducted into Phi Kappa Phi, which is a NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY...you know one of things for really smart people :) Oh yeah, and I'm CONSERVATIVE.
Some of the most educated people I know, including my father who has several college degrees, are conservative. Thank you for your VERY UNEDUCATED COMMENTS !!!

      • Posted By: bluebloodedLV @ 08/04/2008 6:33:38 PM

Ouch, you conservatives don't like being called uneducated just like us liberals don't like being called immoral and told that we hate America.

      • Posted By: bluebloodedLV @ 08/04/2008 5:52:45 PM

You republicans can slam your hard heads into the sand as much as you want, but it's a fact!! I never said any of you were ignorant. But your defensive responses do make me wonder. At least know the demographics if you're going to try to argue. My best friend is a conservative with a master's degree, but out of the six of us who graduated together in 1998 - she's the only one. As I stated above you made your way to this website, you can find this information yourself. Try Google - 2004 electoral map. The big BLUE cities have more people with higher education. The rural RED areas have more people with less education. I don't have to make this stuff up. What is fascinating is your responses!! I knew this would stir it up - the truth hurts.

I'm unsure as to the extent of Mr. Obama's race having much to do with anything here in the South. Truth be told, the South still is the Bible belt, and when an abortion supporting, homosexual rights backing, pro-gun control candidate comes along the South doesn't take very kindly to it. I think the black vote is shored up, 95% of them vote democratic regardless of who the candidate is. However, the black population is far from the majority; Mr. Obama needs to focus on the white population if he stands a real shot at winning any of the southern states. I think at this point he's too shaky on where he stands, and many southerners see right through his words and see him as a 'say anything to get elected' candidate. As for being Christian, if you call the 'church' he attended in Chicago a Christian church, you're gravely mistaken. Reverend Wright was and is extremely devisive, and many whites took huge offense his comments about America, and a bigger offense at Mr. Obama's refusal to acknowledge the derisiveness of his comments. Again, people see right through that.

    The election is about race.
This election has been about race since the day that Obama won his first primary. The Dims made it about race. They turned it into a racial event. Obama plays the race card everyday. It's his crutch. He's an empty suit with endless BS lines. He talks jive and nothing but. McCain is a safety first guy. He's boring. There is only one thing new in this election: race. IN PEOPLE'S MINDS race will become more and more the relevant issue everyday until election day. And as time passes Obama will slowly lose more and more ground. And the Dims have no one to blame but themselves. When Whites go to the ballot box the O.J. trial, the L.A. riots, Rev. Wright, bussing, afirm. action, etc. etc., 20 years of TV images of crime, will run through their minds as they punch that chad. Like it or not, this election will become more and more about race as time goes on.

The first thing that needs to happen is the South needs to get over the civil war. It is the 21st century and the civil war is ancient history. In the North, it never comes up in conversation. We need to let the past be the past and move on. Then maybe, someday, there will no longer be African Americans and White Americans???and we will all just be ???Americans???. And then maybe we can elect people into offices because they are the best choice and not elect them or not elect them because of their skin color.

Shouldn't we be proud to be the laughing stock country? I can see why Eastern Europe is laughing at us. Reading the posts below I see: If you don't like it get out. There is no racism here it's just sensitive black people. The article is a disgrace. The Dems are a dictatorship? SSBN 777 is just ridiculous with - Lincoln didn't care. The Dems made the presidency about race. Obama wants to be the master. Please pass the Arugula. Obama is a socialist and the worst kind of racist.

God Bless America. We should be proud.

If you have time, take a read of this and things will start to fit together as to how Obama is running his campaign. After reading it, you will see why the writer explains why Obama is a Race Conscious Liberal which is part of the sub-title of article.

      Barack Obamas Lost Years
      by Stanley Kurtz

The Senator Obamas tenure as a State legislator reveals him to be an old-fashioned, big government, Race-Conscious Liberal.

AskPlus: If the Democratic Party as YOU have stupidly stated, MADE the qwest for the presidency about race, EXPLAIN if you can, WHY THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A BLACK US PRESIDENT/VICE-PRESIDENT IN THE USA? Please don't tell me, let me guess; OH THAT'S RIGHT, NO BLACK PERSON HAS EVER BEEN SMART ENOUGH FOR THE JOB. If INTELLIGENCE OR "SMARTNESS" WERE THE REQUISITES FOR BECOMING PRESIDENT, THEN "SOMEONE(S)" IN AMERICA MADE A TERRIBLE BLUNDER IN THE LAST TWO PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS WHEN THEY VOTED "OVERWHELMINGLY" FOR GEORGE W!!
