girlfriday1, Obama was raised mostly by his maternal grandparents who were Christians. He was raised a Christian. His mother was also Christian, it was his Kenyan father and grandfather who were Atheist.

I agree with funkdome... The South USED to be a bigoted and racist region...it is not that way any longer... One reporter trying to sum up many peoples' opinions into one is unacceptable... EVERYONE that I know down here admits slavery and racism are VERY WRONG... but that doesn't mean that just because it used to be that way that it still is... how narrow-minded and iditotic this article is... if Dickey truly wanted to report on the ideology of the South, then he should have truly researched... In the South you'll always find open arms and smiling faces toward everyone regardless of race, creed or ethnicity... there are so many things wrong with this article I could write a novel... but what do you expect: a bigoted, liberal publication actually not trying to tell the truth... I think not!

Nice article, but it makes no mention of the periodic surges of conservative radicalism. Just last week, a 58 year old white male (and reader of several conservative talk-show hosts' books--according to police) walked into the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church in Knoxville and killed two people and critically wounded about 5 other people. Also, according to police, his confession letter stated that he was "targeting the liberal movement." In some areas of Appalachia (including Scott County, Tennessee, where "Deliverance" was later filmed), there is a real danger for minorities--including biracial families. Just recently in Scott County, a cross was burrned in the yard of a family that is comprised of bi-racial children. Perhaps more insidious than a bombing (e.g., Eric Rudolph) are the non-inclusive attitudes of the majority population in the South. It is the dangerous combination, an attitude that is made up bits and pieces of xenophobia, racism, religious fundamentalism, separatism, famialism, and tradition, that forms an unseen rift between the newcomers and established old south. This pressure cooker culture needs change. Thus far, Obama appears to be the needed catalyst.

I do not have all of the answers to this problem, but an honest dialogue and thorough dialogue must begin. Obama was the catalyst.

I am waiting (hopefully) for part 2 of your news story. If you can't be equal in reporting the extremes of BOTH sides of the racial spectrum: Black Panthers, Farrakhan; and then your report is one sided and basically, like most of the stories on the news, designed to drive ratings. You had a good time showing Wild Bill's in Kennesaw. Yes, we have all heard of his shop.

Quite frankly this story was a waste of time of the viewers and just stirring up something we would all like to rise above and move forward. It had potential but failed. Sure bad things happened. They also happened to my family when Sherman marched thru Georgia. We are all still trying to get over that!

But I and my family have been raised to move forward. My Grandfather and father taught me to move forward and never judge by color. Only God can judge. I have made sure my child learned never to judge by color. But if you continue to throw this in our faces; it will stir nothing but resentment and hatred.

So when is part 2 of the news story? From a born and raised proud rural Southern white male.

Exactly. I thought the same thing halfway through and definitely by the end of the article. It was a stirring of the pot to generate WHITE GUILT syndrome.

As a person who was born and raised in Alabama, but now living in Ohio........my personal observation is that racism is way worse up north than it is in the south. That's not to say there aren't racist in the south, but at least down south they don't mind letting you know who they are. You see them riding around in their pick-up with the confederate flag in the back window, and you know who they are.

Up north, it's beneath the surface, hidden from plain sight. There are racist up north, I don't think anybody can dispute that........but they are more like a snake, hiding in the tall grass, waiting for the chance to bite and spread their poision.

I am not voting for Obama, but it has nothing to do with the color of his skin! Hell, if Rice were running, I'd get out and knock on doors for her, but not because she is black or a woman..........but because I believe she, hands down, would make a better President than the two clowns we have to choose between now!

It makes me sick to see the media's attempts to play the race card in this election. The only people I hear talking about race are Obama and the Media.....attempting to guilt whites into voting for Obama. It's not about ideas or issues, we are suppose to feel guilty because a bunch of dead people once owned slaves. Get a Life!

I grow weary of the press seaching for stories to hype Obama's run for the presidency. Enough is enough.

  • Posted By: funkdome @ 08/04/2008 7:21:39 PM

This article is bigoted trash. How typical of a hateful and bigoted liberal like Dickey to slander an entire region of a country as being filled with backwards racists. its bad enough that Dickey is enough of an idiot to think that millions of peoples' opinions can be boiled down to a common, simple point of view. What's worse is that this partisan loser thins that he can speak for them after s brief trip through a few states seeking out Civil War re-enactors.

The Newsweek-MSNBC-Washington Post nexus is staffed with a bunch of narrow-minded bigots and this hack piece is a fine illustration of their intolerance.

  • Posted By: Paul Cunningham @ 08/04/2008 6:47:05 PM

Do the story in Boston. Racists are just as present as anywhere in the South.

Mr. Obama is by far the most liberal candidate ever to run for President of the United States. He has
had a long term relationship with William Ayers, the 1960's radical terrorist who bombed the Pentagon,
U.S. Capitol and New York police headquarters among other targets. He has never repented of any of these
acts. As recently as a few years ago there was a picture taken of Mr. Ayers stepping on the American flag.
As for as his terrorism acts, he has been quoted as saying he wish he could have done more.
WE know that his pastor of twenty years, Jeremiah Wright has uttered many "hate-filled" things such as
"G_d damn America" and the "U.S. of KKK". Tony Rezko his long time acquiantence and friend was convicted
recently(in Chicago)of 16 of 24 counts of fraud and money laundering. Over the years, Mr. Obama received
many large campaign contributions from Mr. Rezko. He was also involved in a suspect real-estate deal
    with him and his wife.

Jay Stewart, Chicago Better Government Association: "What looks bad about the transaction is the fact that the transaction occurred at all. Tony Rezko was headed for trouble. He was clearly in the crosshairs of the federal government." (NBC's "Nightly News," 1/29/08)

Cindy Canary, Of The Illinois Campaign For Political Reform, Questioned "What Was [Obama] Thinking" For Being Slow To Walk Away From Rezko Despite Clear Warning Signs To Stay Away From Him. Cindy Canary (Illinois Campaign for Political Reform): "So what we're left with is a question of, you know, really, what was he thinking? And the warning signs to stay away were very clear." CBS' Dean Reynolds: "And Obama didn't heed them?" Canary: "Senator Obama was very slow to walk away from Tony Rezko." (CBS's "Evening News," 2/28/08)

    Obama the pragmatist?

In the vote to confirm judge Roberts, Obama found himself at odds with 22 Democrats who voted for the chief justice.

Senators Russ Feingold and Herb Kohl of Wisconsin, Robert Byrd and Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia, Max Baucus of Montana, Jeff Bingaman of New Mexico, Bill Nelson of Florida, and Ken Salazar of Colorado were among the Democrats casting their votes for Roberts.

The sole exception from a Midwestern battleground state was Sen. Tom Harkin of Iowa, who voted to oppose Roberts. No Republican joined Obama in voting against Roberts.

In the battle over Alito, some Democrats, including Sen. John Kerry, D- Mass., half-heartedly tried to stall a vote on the nomination.

It was clear that Alito???s supporters would win the procedural vote ??? called a ???motion to invoke cloture??? in Senate language ??? and thus would prevent the delay on Alito???s confirmation.

Obama voted ???no??? anyway, joining 24 other Democrats. No Republicans voted with them. Most of the Democrats from battleground states voted for the motion.

    For a filibuster

???He not only voted against Alito, but for a filibuster,??? said Nan Aron, of the Alliance for Justice, an advocacy group that led the effort to defeat several Bush judicial nominees.

Wait: Just just in: Obama is now in favor of Alito and Roberts.

Two newspapers, the Hyde Park Herald and the Chicago Defender give us an insight into who Obama
is. In the years 1995 to 2004,they depict a politician who is profoundly race-conscious, exceedingly

liberal, free-spending even in the face of looming state budget deficits, and very partisan.

I've read a lot of psuedo-intellectual drivel in my life and this ranks right up there with the best of it. I can't imagine anyone working so hard to be so ignorant of his or her surroundings as to put their name to this trash. Worse yet it is given the light of day for others to sift through looking for a nugget of sense ... which sadly there is none to find.

I think the McCain campaign has succeeded in turning this into a campaign about Obama instead of about
the failures of George W. and the Republicans. Everyone should stop talking about race and lapel pins and
Michelle's wardrobe, and other nonsense--The Democrats should talk about the way we got into this war
and should show pictures of McCain and Bush together. They should talk about the energy problems and show pictures of McCain and Bush and Chaney. They should talk about the economy and show McCain and Bush hugging. They should talk about the attacks on the United States Constitution, Bush's disregard of the Senate and even the Supreme Court and show McCain's complicity in these attacks on our America.
Stop talking about Obasma and talk about George and his buddies, one of whom is John McCain.

    • Posted By: Jkyacht @ 08/04/2008 3:58:53 PM

McCain and Bush are not Buddies. Karl Rove and Bush went after McCain personally and attacked his wife and family! You don't know squat! They are in the same political party but they are no where close to being buddies. Do you even remember John Kerry openly discussing John McCain for his VP? McCain said he was flattered but out of loyalty to his party and his consituents he could not accept. Gte a history lesson or something.

I am a white male and have lived in Texas most of my life. I find this election very troubling. I have previously supported the civil rights movement and don't know anyone who believes that slavery has any place in this world or that Jim Crow should have ever been passed. I do not believe that Sen. Obama is a muslim nor any of the other propaganda statements put out by his opponents. I do believe that poverty in this country is caused mostly by lack of education and teen pregnancy. I believe that if there is ever any racial healing it will be a slow process and find it both illuminating and discouraging that with all the problems we face so many people are ready to make some kind of racial statement about this campaign. I have noticed that 96% of black voters support Obama because they feel he is the best candidate for him. If 96% of the white voters support McCain because they feel he is the best candidate for them the race will be over. I do not know much about Sen. Obama. Since he has no track record as a national figure I guess we must take him at his word. I have always voted democrat but he is too liberal for me. Some might see that as a racial statement. I hope not but even it is seen that way I will not vote for him.

    • Posted By: sharenews @ 08/04/2008 6:55:56 PM

No that is not a racist statement. It is a wise statement in that you want to vote for a candidate that has substance, ahs a proven record of experience, specific accomplishments on how he has made a difference and that you have confidence in that candidate to get the job done in the White House. Nothing racist about that. And that is where I am and many others in their thinking when trying to settle on the candidate of choice to vote for as POTUS this Fall. : = )

  • Posted By: haynessemperfi @ 08/04/2008 5:45:32 PM

As a black male born and raised in Arkansas, I strongly disagree with the comment of "the holocaust of black slavery". There was a Holocaust in America but it was directed against Native Americans not blacks though slavery. It was also genocide but we do not talk about that. It amazes me how we overlook that fact. Maybe because, America only racial demeaned Black American aka African Americans in this country (I do not consider myself African American because my Black American genome is composed of Cherokee, Blackfoot Indian, Crow and Irish. I am a Black American with African descent).

Furthermore, why am I reading yet another article written by a non-minority about the racial prejudice experienced by Black Americans and how electing Obama will aviate this stigma? Please if you are a non-minority who wants to offer your opinion on the Black American experience at least have one minority edit it.

    • Posted By: southern-sweettea @ 08/04/2008 6:24:06 PM

I agree with you totally. I am one half Cherokee, and the Native Americans suffered beyond what anyone can imagine, except for the Jewish people.

I don't know what party is best. I do know that under the democrats there were no foreclosures, the price of gas was decent and our young people were not dying in foreign countries by the thousands. The oil companies were not making record profits and there were not hundreds of businesses going out of business. Of course halliburton wasn't booming than either. The richest of the rich were paying a little more taxes. Oh yes our budget was balance. They say the democrats are big spenders. We are spending billions not thousands a month on a war that had nothing to do with ;9-11 only with a grudge that the Bush administration had with a country over oil. Oh yes and before this adminstration is done they are going to try and convience the public that off shore drilling will solve the crisis with the gas prices. Oh yes this adminstration under republican congress and senate gave this president the full control to do as he exactly please without vote. It is the closest thing to dictatorship this country has ever seen. This adminstration as held fear over the heads of the citizens. Cheney and Bush should be tried for war crimes, but they won't because we aren't a third world country so torture is okay in our country. Well now I have to decide if I want a republican or democrat in office. What a tough decision I have to make.

    • Posted By: Crestlinecbs @ 08/04/2008 1:15:44 PM

No tobywynn, no, no, no. Who knows which party is best but foreclosures and sky-high gas prices have all happened since the Democrats took both houses of congress. That happens to be where all legislation begins and all money is appropriated (spent). NOT the White House. NOT the White House, NOT the White House. Jeez.

      • Posted By: bluebloodedLV @ 08/04/2008 6:23:28 PM

No no no. The CEO of Ameriquest was the largest single donor to the Bush 2004 campaign. How the hell did a democratic congress cause foreclosures and high gas prices - they can't do anything thanks to Bush!!

      • Posted By: wgoin @ 08/04/2008 1:56:33 PM

Crestlinecbs: You idiot! The Democrats have only had the majority in the House and Senate for one short year. This mess was going on long before that. And, they have a simple majority - not enough to override any veto by the President and Bush has threatened to veto any legislation which they proposed that might help this situation. When the Democrats have a large majority, like the Republicans did until last year, then they will be able to influence legislation. What a stupid post!

um, no...since January 2006.This is now August 2008. That is more than 2 1/2 years that Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid have been in charge. When I was buying fuel for my truck in 2006, it was $2.50 a gallon more or less. When I sold my truck (last December) it was well over $3.50. Now, I'm hearing tales of almost $5.00 for diesel. All since the Democrats took Congress. And people wonder why thier food prices are going up as well. I remember the Democrats saying they were going to give us relief at the pump. Well, I'm still waiting on my aspirin.

  • Posted By: centerdesign @ 08/04/2008 3:12:25 PM

Simply Tracy, nice compassion for someone aspiring "The American Dream" that I'm sure you've been raised on. Why not assimilate these folks into our culture and make them citizens of this great nation? Your family came as immigrants I'm 100% sure. I cannot understand why Americans are so quick to toss out the people who built suburban America, who farm your food, keep your neighborhood landscapes looking neat, and staff our stores. Black and white thinking is best left behind back in the old days of racism and Jim Crow; please leave them there.

My mother came to the U.S. from Ireland--Legally.
My dad's family came to the U.S. generations ago from Germany and Poland--Legally
My husband's family came to the U.S. from Germany, France, Scotland, England and Ireland more generations ago--Legally
I went to Germany, Belgium, England, Holland, and Canada -- LEGALLY!

If they had to go through all the hoops and obey the laws and take the courses that are required to become a citizen of this country, why do millions of others not have to? Why are you so willing to give them a pass? Illegal Aliens have already, with that first step, proven that they have no respect for the laws of the country that they have entered. If they are so willing to ignore the laws that allow you to enter legally into this country, what is going to stop them from ignoring others?

    • Posted By: dfingles @ 08/04/2008 3:46:08 PM

Most Americans don't have problems with legal immigrants, after all that's how we (mostly) got here. However, this is not the United States with 40 million or so citizens and begging for people to come. This is a modern nation of 300 million citizens with more than enough work for our own people and not enough for 20 million illegal residents. We are not the only modern nation to think so. Germany has a serious problem with resident alien Turks, and France with Algerians. Illegal immigration is a world-wide problem that needs to be addressed with more than cheap slogans about racism.

  • Posted By: clem80 @ 08/04/2008 2:48:43 PM

'illegal alien" translates "criminal", Illegal alien doesn't ranslate criminal, illegal aliens are criminals. When you do something illegal you become a criminal. Criminality is not about where you were born it is about choosing to do something that is against the law. Recognizing the perpetrator of a crime as a criminal is not racist, it is common sense, the thing that is missing from most liberal diatribes and liberal philosophy. There are deep concepts that require debate but calling the perpetrator of a crime a criminal is not a deep subject that requires debate here in the South!!!!!!!

    • Posted By: rapidron @ 08/04/2008 2:55:26 PM

Have you ever broken any law? Have you not stopped for a full 3 seconds at a stop sign, or barely ran a red light? Have you thrown a paper cup out of your car, or missed a waste basket and littered? Have you ever done anything that was a crime in your life?

That too makes you a criminal in your description.

      • Posted By: simply tracy @ 08/04/2008 3:04:40 PM

There is a big difference between missing a trash can or not stopping at a stopsign for three seconds and illegally entering a country, and if you can't see that, you have a serious problem. Running a redlight is not a thing that you go out planning to do; illegally entering this country takes premeditation and planning. We jail for life those who commit premeditated murder while those who accidently kill someone can get out in a matter of years. Next time, compare apples to apples, please.

        • Posted By: rapidron @ 08/04/2008 3:19:49 PM

Okay I'm glad you answered. Yes, it's true, there's no comparison in entering a country and breaking other laws. I was using his definition as a starting point.

Now, if your family is starving and being persecuted perhaps even to the point of death, how large of a crime would entering a country illegally to work hard and simply live be to you? I have a feeling that it wouldn't seem much of a crime, as we do not see littering as a big deal.

          Poor 'evil' illegals...

          • Posted By: sharenews @ 08/04/2008 6:19:33 PM

Even though technically they are commiting a crime illegally entering the US, I blame our government who should have addressed this issue years ago before it got out of hand like it is now. I blame the big businesses too using these people to work for pennies. Thats why this problem we have now needs to look at the big picture as to how we ended up with the situation we have and address it fairly, even though technically these people did commit criminal act illegally working/staying within the US. I dont know the answer . . .but it is a big problem.

          • Posted By: simply tracy @ 08/04/2008 6:08:47 PM

And yet, there are millions more in just that position who come here legally....gee.Who would I rather have? I would rather have ANYONE who shows they will support the rights of this country to determine who will live here than someone who spits on the very place they say they want to come. Oh, and why is it ok for Mexico to keep out illegals but not us? They shoot them; we don't. No, we listen to people like you who just want to give them a home like a little lost puppy, and make them citizens when they have shown they have no respect for our country from the day they cross that border illegally. What makes you tjhink they'll be good, upright citizens if they can't even play by the rules from the start?

        • Posted By: centerdesign @ 08/04/2008 3:16:06 PM

So you agree it's not as black and white then, eh? Then why do you view these people who flee war, famine, and in pursuit of "The American Dream" - something I'm sure you've been raised upon - be so bad? Why be upset when they work and pay some amount of taxes here? Why assimilate them so they can become a full member and work hard here? Why not give these people a break - people who built your house, people who work the farms and help feed your family, or people who staff our stores a way to become a citizen?

          • Posted By: dfingles @ 08/04/2008 4:30:11 PM

            A) Because they don't want to be "assimilated", and actively resist it at every chance, which is why the Democratic Party gets their votes because Democrats can't see the fractured and crumbling wall for the liberal graffiti on it. B) Because there are plenty of people in the inner cities who could be employed at these same jobs, but are now completely dependant on a welfare state. If we stop the illegal immigration, employers will have to recruit more heavily in the cities and offer better wages than welfare to entice people to work for them. This will improve the overall economy, reduce welfare rolls, reduce unemployment, reduce entitlement spending, increase funds for social security and Medicare with taxes from the newly employed, and (theoretically) reduce crime. Enough reasons to stop illegal immigration for you?
