A couple of points about this article. It appears the author had an agenda and aggressively pursued the information that would support his viewpoint, vice simply traveling through the South and trying to see with a fresh set of eyes and a blank slate of perspectives and prejudices. First; Lincoln never campaigned for, or intended to free the slaves. Lincoln only bowed to the political requirement to keep an unpopular war (there were deadly riots in major Northern cities against the draft) on track and published the Emancipation Proclamation order after the Civil War started. Also, the Emancipation Proclamation only applied to slaves in the Confederate States. Slaves in Union states were not freed until the passage of the 13th Amendment, years later. Second, opinions of 12yr olds from rumors in schools are important for inclusion in presidential politics? Sounds to me like someone was hunting for the ???truth??? and was not going to stop until the ???truth??? was found, no matter the source. Third; another ???source??? is the ???black brothers???? More claims of the big bad Republicans manipulating the entire South, when the real story is people don???t like to have their hard-earned money taken from them and handed out as bribes to vote for another political party.

The real story of this presidential campaign is that the Democrats have well-learned the lessons of the Roman Senate and are purchasing their votes with bread and circuses. My bread and (currently) Obama???s circus act.

I read Newsweek, Time, all of them along time ago. They are out of tocuh with reality and rarely do actual research. However, I still read them at times to see how obscure they can be. But I am conservative and I like to hear both sides of peoples opinions. It appears these days thats not getting printed. The only side that comes out is what they editors want you to hear. Which is sad, I think journalists should write what they see and feel and not what the editors put forth. Its really turned to a bunch of crap. No wonder the newspapers and magazines are all not making money. 1. people just dont read anymore and 2. people get bored easily with hate or directional pieces

"Journalists" is a very loose term these days. A journalist, at one time, was a person who investigated and reported the facts of a story. It seems these days publishing your opinions on a story and fabricating your own facts is journalism. This is a crying shame! Many people who have commented here have received the bulk of their information from just this kind of "journalism".

ssonya7149, remember that this reporter traveled the south... You may not have the same issue as other towns, ctities, or states in the South have. The reporter is trying to give you an overall look. Take it from a southerner who is bi-racial, racism in the South is alive and well. Yes it is alive everywhere in America as well.

    Mr. Dickey,
I found this paragraph of your article quite interesting because it is NOT factual. I attended the meeting in Powder Springs. The women was not complaining and her question was not about illegal immigrants. Her quesition for Senator Obama was about his plan to reform No Child Left Behind in reference to the increasing drop-out in Georgia and how to prepare students to compete in a global economy. One of his ideas was teaching foreign languages to students at an earlier age. This makes me wonderf what other lies you have in this article.
Too often for these voters' conservative tastes, the Democratic Party comes across as "preachy," according to Black. He cited a recent appearance by Obama in Powder Springs, Ga. A woman in the audience complained about having to deal with immigrants who spoke Spanish but no English. Obama said they'd learn eventually, but she ought to want an educational system that would teach her kids Spanish. Southerners, said Black, really do not like being told what they ought to want.

the younger vote goes to Obama, the "black vote " goes to Obama(90 % or higher), the older vote goes to McCain.......

    • Posted By: raddave @ 08/04/2008 4:00:16 PM

Since I am 41, I do not believe I qualify as a young person and I am voting for Obama.

  • Posted By: Sallie J @ 08/04/2008 1:31:15 PM

Since the civil war the South has cried woe is me. They sat on their rears before and after Katrina waiting for the North to come save them and this election will no different than any other. The votes will go to whomever promises a chicken in every pot with someone else paying for the chicken and the pot.

    • Posted By: tct23 @ 08/04/2008 1:43:33 PM

      seriously?

      • Posted By: AlaTide @ 08/04/2008 3:59:10 PM

Yes, very very serious. But please don't trust me. Read papers from Biloxi, Mobile and even New Orleans about what really happened in Katrina and her aftermath. Also, if you ever meet anyone from the Gulf Coast who lived here at that time, ask them. They will tell you about the differences in the hurricane preparedness and reaction in N.O and other Gulf Coast cities. Mistakes were made but most were local not Federal. Again, don't trust me investigate your self.

    • Posted By: AlaTide @ 08/04/2008 1:45:34 PM

You are sooo incredibly ignorant. I am from the Gulf Coast, lived through dozens of hurricanes including Katrina and the ONLY people I know who has ever waited for anyone to help them with pre or post hurricane activity were the city insulated folks in downtown New Orleans. The folks along the Mississippi Gulf Coast were devastated way beyond anything N.O. could imagine, but did you hear as much about them? NO! Why? Because they handed it themselves. Stop watching the biased news and start living the truth. Don't believe everything you read or see. Sometimes the truth is not as easy to find as turning on CNN.

      • Posted By: Zubata @ 08/04/2008 2:01:49 PM

AlaTide - thanks for setting the record straight. While our TVs showed the story from an angle that portrays the country as a bunch of helpless sloths waiting for an inept government to save their sorry azzes, many others were out there helping themselves and their neighbors recover. Hats off to peoploe like you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Posted By: n.o.lady @ 08/04/2008 1:58:35 PM

I'm from New Orleans and you just don't have the straight answer. What you saw on TV after Katrina was the welfare New Orleanians waiting for someone with hand outs, just like they will be doing after Obama is elected. The hard working people of our city ( and their are many) cleaned their own property and refurbished their own homes with the insurance proceeds they paid for. Yes most of us had insurance, which we paid for with our own money. The liberal media painted a picture of the poor black people that were abandoned. Please don't paint all of Orleanians with that paint brush.

  • Posted By: thetruthandonlythetruth @ 08/04/2008 3:58:45 PM

n.o. lady, do you have a problem paying reparations to the Japanese and others? Sure doesn't seem that way... Blacks in general do not want you to pay reparations, but would like for the economic and justice systems to be revamped. You have to know that these are very scewed, but this may not matter too you, as you cannot vote for Obama because you are affraid that he alone may have more entitlement programs. Try this Republicans: you want small governmaent with less social programs then have a real minimum wage. You know a wage that an individual can actually pay rent, bills, car loan(s), etc.... You cannot have it both ways.

As a devoted Obama supporter and democrat (not because the democratic party has ACCOMPLISHED any great thing for African-Americans) I openly state I DO hope America selects McCain as their next president. Afterall, HE'LL SEND YOUR SONS, DAUGHTERS, FATHERS, MOTHERS, HUSBANDS, WIVES and anyone else off to war to PROTECT the so-called almighty DOLLAR. So, PLEASE AMERICA, ELECT HIM!!!!!

    • Posted By: not.your.change @ 08/04/2008 3:34:15 PM

If you think Obama will do anything differently, you should think again. He hasn't amassed his fortune (that 's the almighty dollar to you) by not protecting his.

  • Posted By: sdhdavis @ 08/04/2008 12:54:19 PM

I also have a real problem with Obama being compared to Abraham Lincoln. To me that is an insult to Lincoln. Lincoln was certainly no liberal elitist. He was often akward, a grounded, REAL man who could relate to everyone with humanity and compassion. Salt of the earth. There was nothing superficial about Lincoln!

    • Posted By: lhwilk0 @ 08/04/2008 1:05:31 PM

Not exactly factual. Lincoln originially proposed that a reasonable solution to the slavery issue was to round-up all slaves and send them back to the african continent......realizing that this idea was not actionable, he altered his position to one that would best serve the aggressive economic interests of the industrial north.......strange, but true.

      • Posted By: sdhdavis @ 08/04/2008 1:15:52 PM

I didn't state an opinion on Lincoln's view of slavery. I think you need to look at Lincoln as a whole man rather then his considered action regarding slaves. This is the man who signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Have you read Doris Kearns "Team of Rivals" Lincoln's autobiography? Excellent reading and will expose you to a wide array of Lincoln's thoughts, his traits, personality, etc. I appreciate your comment, the Civil War was never really about slavery as we in the South well know.

        • Posted By: zbaby2 @ 08/04/2008 1:36:29 PM

I dont understand this whole "liberal eliteist" thing. The man grew up in a single parent household in a time where interracial marriages were not accepted and looked down on. When his mother decided she wanted to move to Indonesia, he decided after living there a few years that he wanted to come back to the States and he was still a young boy. He has worked his way up, earned a Harvard degree, worked with the poor in Chicago and busted his butt despite all the odds to get where he is. He is what America is all about. Republicans need to get over themselves and accept that Bush-like cronism is no longer tolerated and its time for a CHANGE!!!

          • Posted By: sdhdavis @ 08/04/2008 1:58:57 PM

Obama is an elitest and being an elitest doesn't have anything to do with where you come from. He probably works so hard to keep up this elitest image BECAUSE of his humble beginnings. Come on the seal, the suits, the rock star type persona...give me a break you know exactly what we are talking about. I don't have a problem with Obama I just don't agree he is ready to lead this country or agree with his more liberal, socialistic views. I do admire his many accomplishments, just don't think he is ready to be President no matter how hard you push.

            • Posted By: jerzyboy349 @ 08/04/2008 3:27:25 PM

sdhdavis: Why do you believe that Obama originates from humble roots? His American grandparents were not at all of humble means and financed his way through an elite private school in Honolulu that most Hawaiians could never afford.

            • Posted By: zbaby2 @ 08/04/2008 2:07:54 PM

Well he has more qualifications than our current President. But unlike most people on this blog, I will respectfully disagree. Because he appeals to younger voters doesnt mean he has a rock star persona. Plus for an America that worships celebrities, I dont see why that is all that bad. The man is no more elitist than George Bush.....but far more intelligent.

Well changes in operations of insurance companies is a start. For the record (New York Times and they did not release the names) the top 8 insurance companies reported earnings of 10 billion dollars. This after all operation costs, claims and taxes were paid. Insurance companies are not filing BK nor do they need government bailouts. If there are any regulations that govern fees charged or in coverage offered (on any kind of insurance) they are not being enforced. Insurance companies in this state can raise rates of 10% without notifying the Insurance Commission. Any increase over that must be approved, which it almost always is. I think some of the blame on health insurance is corporate greed and lack of regulation by anybody, State or Federal.....I am posting this for general purposes. I find this outrageous.

    • Posted By: rapidron @ 08/04/2008 3:23:12 PM

I'm with you 100%. Insurance companies have free reign and are just ridiculously profitable for those on top. California has mandatory insurance which is great, and yet little oversight for companies. They write their own profits and drain all citizens, rich and poor.

I lean that certain allignments of politicians allow this more than others.

  • Posted By: CoastalGal @ 08/04/2008 3:22:32 PM

Whether your a Democrat, Republican or Liberal, white, black, rich or poor...the main function of a governing body, the president included, especially the president, is supposed to be the greatest good for the greatest many. The president is accountable to the american people. All public servants are servants of the people not the other way around, that includes the president most of all. People should vote in a manner that benefits the counrty as a whole, not for just a chosen few. There is enough pie for everyone. But most people will never leave there safe little comfort zones, no matter how bad the situation becomes because as long as the mess doesn't affect them, no problem, right?

  • Posted By: mlc23 @ 08/04/2008 3:17:48 PM

How patently stereotypical! How long did you have to look to find people to play into your probably long held misperceptions regarding the South? And it's no comfort for you to claim to be "tracing your roots." If the story were about any other demographic group, including its veiled insults, it would have never been printed. Keep in mind that its the South that feeds, fuels and fights for this country more often than not.

This article is merely an obtuse campaign ad for Obama and an acute one for more socialism (yes, McCain is a socialist too). The Oligarchy that runs this country continues to keep racial issues at the forefront to distract us from their theft. Yes the 'Civil War' is still being fought, but it is because there is still resistence to the socialist revolution that has been taking place for over a century. Any challenge to their encroachments is dismissed as racist, or sexist, or homophobic (the holy trinity of multi-cuturalism), as well as xenophobic, specieist, and as a last resort, Hitler. Never mind that unrestrained immigration only helps the rich, as the new immigrants drive down wages and drive up the cost of government. Never mind that our fiat money system steals our wages and our savings as the rich use the newly printed billions (trillions?) to fund their wars and their vote-buying schemes all the while lining their pockets. Never mind that members of the "chattering classes" such as the author of this article would never openly challenge their masters' lies for fear of being banished to the working class. Never mind that as the government has taken over functions that once belonged to the family and the community and the church, we have plunged into a dependency that destroys the bonds of kinship and community that makes for a healthy and good life. Never mind that our tax burden is so high that it keeps us in a state of indentured servitude. Never mind that those in power see conflict and tragedy as oppurtunities to increase their power and influence, and many times they create the "problems" they are trying to solve. So let's keep re-opening old wounds while those in power continue to find ways to steal from us and control our lives. As horrible as this may sound at first, try to think how different America would be if the government had nothing to do with charity, education, or marriage. Let the name calling begin.

    • Posted By: rapidron @ 08/04/2008 3:15:09 PM

So I think a good portion of us would like to see a movement away from this control and theft of American citizens. My stand is simply that the direction we are heading is very much toward this dystopia you speak of, and so I yearn for change.

No, again, people against Obama are not racist, but this has been something stated by the people themselves in order to insulate themselves from scrutiny. I would never say a person is racist who does not support Obama, and I'm pretty sure the most major portion of people who DO support Obama would never go in this direction.

You can see from these posts as the most simple evidence that there are PLENTY of people who appear to be racist with their egregious. If we see this, can we not call an apple an apple?

    • Posted By: CoastalGal @ 08/04/2008 3:06:54 PM

      That was so right on!!!!!

  • Posted By: Sallie J @ 08/04/2008 1:38:46 PM

Obama is a socialist. That is the worst kind of racist by believing that anyone who is not on welfare should give to the people who are or because someone makes $5000.00 more a year than the "other" guy. Bull.
That is called charity which is good, forced socialism is not good.

    • Posted By: raddave @ 08/04/2008 3:14:19 PM

Tax dollars not only pay welfare, they pay for the defense of this country, the roads you drive on, to make sure the food and drugs you eat and take are safe, etc... How dare those socialists finance the military and build roads!!!

    • Posted By: rjkardo @ 08/04/2008 2:05:27 PM

Hmmm...you seem to be part of the crowd that does not know what socialism is...and you seem to be unsure of what a racist is also.

The South has not changed enough yet for whites to vote for a black man. The influx of northerners and hispanics may someday give a non white candidate a chance in the south, but not until more of the literally old southern residents die off in the next few decades. Such inveterate racial attitudes are not unique to the south. The primaries have shown that the vast majority of older voters throughout the country can not and will not accept a black man as President. The election will show the same resistance among the old folks. Their prejudice dies hard, but inevitably dies with them. Another generation or two from now, predjudice againt blacks will fade as younger, more color blind voters age. For now, Mr. Obma has problem with older white voters that will cost him the election.

    • Posted By: ssbn777 @ 08/04/2008 2:15:53 PM

98% of blacks voting for Obama is A-OK, but I love how any white person against Obama is a "racist" . Have you ever considered that those older voters are making their decisions based on experience, while the young ones are caught up in the hype-fueled Obama phenomenon? No, those whites are just "racist" and a "problem" that needs corrected....

      • Posted By: rapidron @ 08/04/2008 3:08:36 PM

No, white people who are not for Obama are not racist. It's simply that some open their mouths though and remove all doubt (or in this case, post).

  • Posted By: joextra @ 08/04/2008 3:02:14 PM

In a single sentence you make reference to the "days of Jim Crow in the South" and the
"segregated U.S. armed forces" .... segregation was not invented in the South, segregation was a national policy until the end of W W I I . And it died at a faster rate in areas with lower populations of African Americans. jk, Atlanta
