This article perfectly illustrates why the entire United States has to stop catering to the culture of the South. U.S. history time and again has shown the South to be nothing but a divisive and disruptive influence on the rest of the country. From the civil war through civil rights up to George W. Bush, the South has been nothing but a problem. Hopefully, through this election, our country can move into the 21st century whether the culture of the South wants to come along or not.

If the South is so bad, then why couldn't you Northerners leave well enough alone when they tried to secede? No, you had to launch the most destructive and expensive war up to that date to bring them back under your control.

An don't give me that "free the slaves" crap. Read your history books (not the junk they give you in elementary school, I mean the real ones). Lincoln couldn't have given two shits about the slaves. The "Emancipation Proclimation" only freed slaves in the Confederate states, not the slaveholding Union States, and was intended only to start a slave insurrection in the South to aid the Union's war efforts. Riots broke out in the streets among whites in Northern cities when the Emanicpation Proclomation came out and they thought they were fighting and dying for the slaves. So get your facts straight.

Tim Rogers, mmmm..wow..i guess you just finished your thesis on old southern racist voters. Man, I tell you the most vile and one sides views have come against anti-southern people on here. Ok, so 1st you assume all old white southerners are racist. Wow, how much research did you do on that?...man, tim, that was a rough one...thats a pretty ignorant generalization.

I am a born and raised Southerner and have had the unique opportunity to live and work in the Middle East as well as the Norteast US.
In my opinion, your enterpretation of the "South" is very out of touch and has a strong lean toward liberal elitism.
As far as Obama unifying the "South", his entire spoken plan is total "Nothing" - just words as he would say!
    His words and his associations continuously change as the public dictates. His views on taxes and economics make a 2nd grader look like a genius. America is my country and we the people need to start holding politicians accountable for their decisions. Don't count the American population out, when the curtains are shut and votes have been counted, Obama will be teaching law again, but not to my children.;

to rptm: Obama's plans are very well thought out and make a great deal of sense. McCain, on the other hand, has yet to release any firm plans. McCain seems to be relying on people voting for him because he was once a POW - there have been lots of POW's. That doesn't make him a good presidential candidate. Obama's plans are sound and detailed. And, as a former Southerner, I'm proud to vote for Obama.

Wow, are you ever racist, anti-Christian and VERY confused. Oh, did I say paranoid? I agree that this is the most important election in decades. National security, the economy and excessive taxation are the 3 most important issues. Best wishes.

Another absolutely brilliant article by Christoper Dickey.

Those who are unable to grasp the insight, both personal and political, are merely representative of the problems with this country. In this election if people lack the courage to move beyond their fears and prejudice then this country is quite simply doomed to follow the pattern of France and England -- from world dominance to following the leader.

No truly thinking person should be willing to return to power people of the same ilk that brought us to the this time of economic chaos. Common sense should tell you the mentality that created this mess is not capable of correcting it. Those willing to believe lies so that they can continue to suffer economically need to support their cause by simply staying home on Election Day, that allows them the righteous of their position but gives the rest of us an opportunity to survive.

    • Posted By: Native Texan @ 08/04/2008 2:05:43 PM

What in the h**l are you babbling about. England and France are ahead of us on the path to socialism and marxism. Who do you think the pied piper of socialism is? BHO!!!

Why is Barack's full name listed, Barack Hussein Obama, while John McCain's is not. If you're going to be fair and unpartial, list John McCain as John Sidney McCain III. The fact that this author is snidely trying to make a point by using Obama's middle name as some sort of scare tactic is disappointing, to say the least. I thought America was a country of tolerance where a man was not judged by his name, but by his deeds. If you're going to try to use Obama's name as a negative aspect of the man, use McCain's full name as well.

Bill M -Again more hate. Seems many of the posts I have read on here blame the South for so many things and you want to get rid of it. Very angry overtones. Sir, no matter your race, region or beliefs I believe you have a right to them. Whats become a danger to this country is no respects anothers opinion or belief. That one thing alone...divides this country. No politics. Do people really believe any one politician or election will change peoples deep down beliefs? I dont think so.

You know what gets on my nerves more than any of this...people saying that they think Obama is the "antichrist". Lol, if he is...what are you gonna do to stop him? Send out some SPAM mail, and post your ideas on comments boards? That'll be sure to stop the Son of Satan! Quit whining and repent already if you are so afraid. And if you are already saved...what are you so afraid of? Heaven is supposed to be the shizznittlebam?! I'm out, this discussion sucks worse than the article.

I have lived in the South all my life. I can't remember a single conversation about scares from the Civil War. I laugh when I read articles like this saying we see ghosts from our past. We are independent minded..........don't like intrusive government.........don't depend on the Government for our rent controlled apartments or our transportation...........and we are CONSERVATIVE! Get over it..........

CharlesBBCA: wow, for an oldtimer you sure spew alot of hate. Calm down. Many continue to vote is non in their own interest. Read below Charles. How do you feel that if any of these people for McCain they are wrong? Hey, you are voting for Obama, thats your choice, I wont try to disuade you. However, you are trying to tell me for who I vote for is wrong. Why cant you accept the way people want to vote. It seems to me you are against the very thing this country was founded on. Freedom.....including freedom of choice and vote.

I'm sure the author feels a lot better about himself (the Southern boy who escaped the ignorant backwoods and "made good"), like so many who engage in this sort of regional generalization. I grew up in the South too, and I never recognize the one-sided depiction of it I see in trashy, half-a$$ed articles like this one. I write this from my apartment in Moscow. I guess I'm a pretty cosmopolitan Southerner, huh? And frankly, having done my PhD work at an Ivy League school, I always find it refreshing, upon returning home, to find people who are, if anything, more open-minded and just plain friendly than your average New England "intellectual." This sort of stereotyping is just plain stupid: it always reveals the narrow-mindedness, ignorance, and simplistic tendency towards generalization of the author who engages in it, not the poor suckers he's trying to make a mockery of. Physician, heal thyself.

Amazing, they can remember the Civil War but not Charles Keating. I guess when it's somebodies elses money, it does not ring any bells. What they want, and what everyone wants is impossible, and that is every thing gets fixed in his first 4, never happen! It took Clinton two terms to pay off the last deficit, and was and still is the only president to take 2 steps forward and 1 step back, till he stayed in the closet, without his wife! Now we got a deficit that makes the S&L rip offs look like small change, and it will take one party, the same direction, at least 21/2+ terms to get close to debt free. Rebuild America would be a huge start, reto-fit our empty factories, and rock and roll into todays market [no energy charges=good pay and still competive in the world market] and a clean dream to leave our great grand kids. Same dream for everyone not just black or white but all gray want a country the WORLD can be proud of! Beats disgusted!

I was raised in West Texas. We did not consider ourselves a part of the South. As a matter of fact, we considered ourselves aligned with Arizona and New Mexico.

But, we did have many of the same thought processes as in the old south. While we learned and studied the Civil War, I thought that it was boring. I came away with one thought that has survived to today: A country cannot make itself beloved (the unionist North) by imposing itself on the losers (the slaved South). Today that thought has transended to our actions by the current president. Today I think: A country cannot make itself beloved (the American Bush) by imposing itself on the victims of conquest (live your lives our way or you lose).

I think the article hits a lot of the points right on the nail head. When the aurthor points out the missing GOP canditates, that is what I see in my own neighbor here in Colorado. But I see lots of signs for Democrats. Bush really did a number on American pride. Both my husband and I are veterans. Neither of us has any inclination to fly the American flag on any days other than Memorial Day or Veterans Day.

How does that tie in with the South? While the South lost its pride by receiving Civil War punishment for losing that war to the rich North, the rest of the country has also lost its own American pride-identity by laying down and letting the current president force us into subserviant idealisms.

Who will my husband and I vote for? Definately not the GOP if it stands by Bush. Definately not the Democrats if we don't hear something different. McCain? Yes, if her can distant heimself from Bush and the "Good Old Politicians" that guide that party. Obama? Possibly if the retoric can be proven out and if he does have the gumption to put up a good fight against the standard politics that exist in Congress.

As much as I feel the aches and pains if the South, I feel the deep pain fron the loss of pride in America.

Being a president in American means being a world leader, a patriarch, a father to the underpriviledged, and being able to hang in tough and not give in to righteous principles when times get tough.

Is there any question about why a president's hair turns white in only a few years? May we get a GOOD president. Not just a good president, but one who has the backbone to follow through for the good of the country despite what the "party" says that is best for the county.

    The election is about race.
This election has been about race since the day that Obama won his first primary. The Dims made it about race. They turned it into a racial event. Obama plays the race card everyday. It's his crutch. He's an empty suit with endless BS lines. He talks jive and nothing but. McCain is a safety first guy. He's boring. There is only one thing new in this election: race. IN PEOPLE'S MINDS race will become more and more the relevant issue everyday until election day. And as time passes Obama will slowly lose more and more ground. And the Dims have no one to blame but themselves. When Whites go to the ballot box the O.J. trial, the L.A. riots, Rev. Wright, bussing, afirm. action, etc. etc., 20 years of TV images of crime, will run through their minds as they punch that chad. Like it or not, this election will become more and more about race as time goes on.

There seems to be such a huge gap in the sensible tone in these posts, in regards to whether people are pro or against Obama.

What does this tell you? I'm just surprised that people can't open their eyes and see this easy and tangible diffrence.

Racisim is rampant all acrooss this country. As it has been since Lincoln it is more overt in the South & of course, expected. I will be voting for O'Bama. Is he perfect? No, but who is? Republicans in general have played on Americans' fears for decades. Unfortunately, many fall for it. That's how we got W & a unbelievably stupid, immoral & uneeded war in Iraq. Saddam was a bully. Bullies attack those who are weaker than thmselves. He would never have attacked the U.S. directly. I'm so disappointed in many my fellow Amercians. I am depending on the youngsters to keep our democracy. My peers - over 60 - as a group are just pathetic. My friends and family aren't. We will vote for O'Bama!

    • Posted By: Native Texan @ 08/04/2008 1:55:13 PM

southern miss - You might want to figure out how to spell the candidate's name before you go to the voting booth - OBAMA. By the way, your peers, fought WWII and saved your b**t from a serious loss of freedoms. You really need to get off of your liberal kool-aid.

Where can I click on "Report Abuse" with regard to Mr. Dickey's bigoted remarks? As a 55 year old white male and lifelong Southerner who voted for Obama in the Texas Democratic primary and will do so again in the general election this fall, I am deeply offended. How dare this ignorant jerk caricature and stereotype an entire region. I lived through and recall well the era of desegregation and know well how thoroughly the South has embraced that change of culture that was federally imposed in the 1960s over the objection of a much narrower majority of white Southerners than some self-righteous Northerners understand. Racism is by no means dead in the South, but I have to observe that large numbers of white people in some northern areas, like the middle of Pennsylvania between its two major cities, are openly racist in ways that would embarrass all but the worst redneck sliver of modern rural Alabama and Mississippi. Atlanta, Houston, Memphis and other southern cities cannot hold a candle to Detroit, Chicago and Los Angeles for racial segregation of their communities and racial fear and resentment. The white flight to the suburbs in southern cities of the 70s and 80s was preceded and exceeded by that phenomenon in the North. Maybe one of Newsweek's Manhattan reporters can cross the Brooklyn Bridge and investigate the demographic evolution on the other side of the East River between the end of World War II and the current decade.

I am in total agreement with you. The south is where you live, not who you are. I am from the North, but have homes in the South and can tell you...the same people exist throughout this country. There are good, bad, evil and great. Living now inthe DC Metro area, I am so please to be in such a highly integrated area. The differences in each of us makes each a learning experience and I welcome learning about other cultures. I am an Independent voter and will select the candidate that will be represent a vision for a stronger ecomony, alternative fuel resources, bringing our soldiers home safely, healthcare & education. I don't care if he has celebrity status of not, just fix this mess we are in as a country.

BREAKING NEWS. Obama changes his stance on drilling into America's oil reserves (off shore and Anwar). Go read the headlines. AMAZING. I wonder how the liberal environmentalists will handle this one.

  • Posted By: reallyticked @ 08/04/2008 12:55:03 PM

Did you see where Obama had the American flag removed from the tail of his campaign plane and had it replaced with one of his own design? It's true. See "snoopes" or "truthorfiction". If he doesn't respect the American flag then what else is he going to change when he gets into office? This man is no American! We don't need somebody like him to be our President.

    • Posted By: wgoin @ 08/04/2008 1:51:21 PM

to reallyticked: If you had actually read the snopes posting you would know he had to paint over two American flags because they were part of the North American Airlines logo (the plane they are using for the campaign used to belong to that Airline). They could not fly with the logo on the plane. They did leave the American flag which was not part of the logo on the tail section across from the registration numbers. If you're going to tell something - tell the whole truth, not just what supports your prejudice.
