Carla Bruni-Sarkozy is just the kind of political spouse Michelle Obama and Cindy McCain are trying not to be.

Wow..... wacked and french go together.....

  • Posted By: bégé @ 08/05/2008 4:28:27 AM

You got priorities wrong. Carla Bruni-Sarkozy is a highly successful woman who "happens" to be married to the wife of the French President. [in short she is Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, neither Carla Sarkozy nor Carla Sarkozy-Bruni]. As the President's wife, she has a role driven by public expectations and by any measure, incluging those of the British - France's most feared critics - has been doing very well.
Even to an older French male, your opinion on women, and companions in general, seem totally outdated. Long is gone the time of the First Lady, that smiling, gentle female thing quitely sitting in the shadow of her hero political beast.
Had Hillary Clinton - and Carla Bruni - been President, I really wonder what kind of article you would have actually written on Bill and Nicolas: Sex Does not Always Sell?

very good points my friend. I kind of feel bad for bagging on the French earlier. Oh well I will chock it up to being an ugly American.

  • Posted By: ojibwa @ 08/05/2008 5:32:29 AM

It just goes to show that in America both the gender gap and social progress is at an all time low

    • Posted By: onepoker @ 08/07/2008 1:38:33 PM

Yea all time low. by the way how many women executives are there in France? or Germany? or England? oh thats what I thought. Europeans are so far ahead of us. Well atleast we can look to all the minorities that are heads of states in Europe. oh there aren't any. Some day I hope we catch up with them.

Why refer to the 35-hours work week (totally irrelevant in this article) or the 'nationalistic' French. I'm French, and (it might surprise you) NOT America-bashing. Don't you realize this is pretty offending?
Liberal papers pride themselves with their great tolerance and open-ness, but I don't find so many deprecating remarks in conservative media (at least these last years). Of course, I guess writing about the 'lazy and nationalistic' Mexicans or Blacks would be a big 'No-no', but the French? No problem!

    • Posted By: onepoker @ 08/07/2008 1:34:05 PM

35 hours is far from irrelevant. That gives the french an extra 5 hours a week to make love and admire each others marvelous figures. Unfortunately the short work week means the stores close early so they can't stop on the way home and buy deodorant or a razor!

Yeah Yeah lady......l am going to ask the FBI to find out which co-worker guy you a sleeping with or which gal you are experimenting with during your "tupperware parties"

Yes, you will have slept with a dozen men before you turn 25 and you will have sucked more than a dozen schlongs by that time.....so wake up........do you expect us to welcome you sluts into our lives,. then watch you balloon up into fat cows and then go out porking women or other fat male co workers? You are nuts

By the way it is not only the American women who are whores and ***. The average American man is an ***...and that is what drives these women into eating themselves to the point where they become cows....the average american man is a less than associate degree (little more than high school education), loud, brash, completely inappropriate...treats his women like crap......overweight, eats fried food and other *** and knows nothing about the world......so average *** american man and average whore american woman make a good pair...they get hooked up and divorce 65% of the time....how sad......how pathetic

    Posted By: JadedYankee @ 08/04/2008 10:26:49 PM
Comment: Perhaps it is because our American women are mostly fat, overweight, uneducated, loudmouthed ugly cows. Of course they would not want an attractive woman to be first lady. They would feel too threathened. When was the last time you saw a slim attractive married American woman? They are mostly sluts who will have slept with at least a dozen men by the time they turn 25, then snag an unsuspecting guy and then baloon into a fat cow.

Comment: Don't bother with the dating services, the bars or anything that hints you'd like to wind up with a woman. "Jaded" only hints at the hostility you feel toward women. I think the FBI needs to track your every move! Try some anger management therapy before you start anything that God would be upset with you over!

What a screwed up individual you are.

    • Posted By: star3 @ 08/06/2008 11:30:15 PM

I seriously doubt any woman, slut or otherwise, would want to be a part of your life, you are much too bitter, and I suspect its the result of some woman who disappointed you. You need to let go of it and realize not all women are like that, just as there are some men who are male whores (your words, not mine), so can some females be deceptive, but until you understand it for what it is-an incident that was only a part of your life-and let it go, and get on with the present, you will never have a happy future. If someone hurt you, use it to become successful-success us the best revenge. You are allowing that person to control you. The choice is yours-hang on and remain miserable, or let go and find out how to be happy without them. Other people should enhance your life, not be the reason for it. Sorry if I crashed your self pity party, but you seemed to be in a lot of emotional pain, so...now its up to you to make a decision to continue to wallow in your misery, or to join the human race; the rest of us can manage just fine whatever your decision, but--can you?

It really intrigues me how Mrs. McCain is compared to Bruni-Sarkozy and alludes to her pain-killer addiction and age while Michelle Obama is "a devoted mother and an accomplished career woman" and the rest of her paragraph is devoted to nonsense about her fashion sense. She has certainly maintained a "low public profile" by opening her mouth during her husband's campaign about how "for the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country ??? and not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change." This article is very similar to what occured on The View when both potential first ladies were guests, and Cindy McCain had the wonderful opportunity to discuss crap with little to no references to her husband's veiws as a candidate, and Obama's wife had the opportunity to seriously discuss issues that affects her husband and his policies. Hmmm...... Both article and talk show reflect how jaded the media and America are about this upcoming election.

Here we go again. Dollar is down the tube, gas high, people out of work, health insurance non existent, and you still worry about each others looks. WHO CARES!!!!!!! Who cares if people are together because of convenience. Whoever is there in charge needs to take care of issues in this country. Hapily married or not

We need a babe in the white house after 8 years of Mr and Mrs Cleaver.

    • Posted By: star3 @ 08/06/2008 11:42:36 PM

We've had babes in the White House, several of them. But, a babe in the White House had better have something more going for her than her obvious assets, or she will find her little mini skirted fanny kicked to the floor by critics. Same for a hunk in the White House, he had better be able to think as well as flex his muscles. Beauty & brains are a great combination. Beauty fades if you keep breathing in & out long enough, so you'd better have something as a backup.

    • Posted By: star3 @ 08/06/2008 8:36:08 PM

I like Mr. & Mrs. Clever, and Mr, Clever could, actually, run in this election if he chose to, since, according to the DIMocrats, he did not win in either of the past two elections. Before you bring up the issue of why we are in Iraq, allow me: We are there because Saddam Hussien invited us when he insinuated he had WMDs and was prepared to use them; you don't do that to a country who has just been hit, and is still in shock, unless you're looking for trouble. Thats equivilent to watching someone's home burn to the ground while you stand there bragging about what a big stash of matches you have. Of course we RSVPed to his invitation, to do otherwise would have been rude, not to mention plain dumb. Would you rather the war be in your backyard? We had just experienced the terrorist attitude toward us, and were not about to chance a repeat performance. I am very proud of our military and of President "Clever" Bush for having the courage to do what is necessary to prevent the destruction of our freedom by enemies outside or those within, despite the harrassment from brain dead morons. America has done just fine for over 200 years, the youngest nation became the most powerful in a relative brief time, while some other nations had millenniums to accomplish the same thing, yet did not, so, if you think America needs a "change", then change it by either getting your heart in America or getting your ass out of it!

Who want's a president wife whose husband's middle name is Hussein?

    • Posted By: jwtrotman @ 08/04/2008 10:14:45 PM

firstzebra: get a REAL life. You are a racist, but that's your PROBLEM. Who wants a president WHO MUST HAVE HIS WIFE ALONGSIDE HIM 24/7, 365. Obviously, your republican choice IS NOT A REAL MAN for he cannot preside at a campaign event unless he has cindy HOLDING HIM UP. WHAT, is he that old he must be accompanied constantly by a woman? By the way, air head WANT'S true mean is WANT IS". You ARE INDEED a republican for you DO NOT UNDER GRAMMAR any more than McShame understands geography.

      • Posted By: star3 @ 08/06/2008 7:58:46 PM

Please explain to me-if you can-why it is that anytime anyone disagrees with the political policies of a person of color, irs because we're "racist"? Could it just possibly be because we simply dis-agree with you on that particular issue?! Most of us don't give a rat's fat butt what color you are-black, white, purple or green-your ethnic affiliation does not make you smarter, or dummer, or nicer or meaner than anyone else-that comes with who you are inside, not what you are on the outside, so now that we have that cleared up, what is your next whine?

      • Posted By: star3 @ 08/06/2008 6:58:55 PM

Bring it on, babe! Let all your hostilities out, don't be shy. And don't lump all republicans together in an attempt to make us appear to be clones. We are individuals just as you DIMocrats are, unfortunately, with you, its hard to tell there may be a difference, since all of you seem to speak as one voice, but then maybe I;m confusing you with the liberals who are a different breed entirely. The Democrat party was once a great party, until it was infested by the body snatchers who try to serenade us with their plastic smiles & Glib talk (means speaking a lot, but saying nothing that makes sense.), but we are smarter than the average bear, so can see right through that facade. I'm not one of those who feels the need to apologize for being a proud American. It would be a dis-honor to our forefathers, who fought so we could be a free nation, and to the brave men & women who are still fighting to keep it free, so, no, I will not apologize for being free, and enjoying it, so if anyone has a problem with that, then get out of the way, or get trampled by my dancing feet! Either get your heart in America, or get you ass out of it!

I can hardly believe how many of the comments portray readers who are in denial. The author is telling it like it truly is and people it is what it is. Take a look around, and be honest with ourselves, if we had a first lady that looked or behaved the same as Carla, she would be torn down by the poparazzi, media, late night television you name it. It is what it is people, if Carla was American and the American first lady no less, she wouldn't make it. Matter of fact her behavior would bring her husband down. Don't shoot the messenger, tis the Society we live in today in America. Blah, Blah, Blah women have the right to do what they like etc, etc. bottom line, this behavior wouldn't fly in America. She'd become tabloid trash in a minute. This article speaks the truth, let's try and fix that instead of tearing down the author.......it is what it is!

    • Posted By: star3 @ 08/06/2008 7:19:32 PM

You have a point, and it began with the drugged brained hippie era when women demanded equality with men. They were correct in insisting on equal pay for the same job, and in some other areas, but then things got out of control, so that "free sex" , and the attitude that "If it feels good, its ok" became acceptable to the youth (of which I was one) of that era, so now they are stuck with the results of that kind of thinking. I did not do drugs or indulge in permissive sex, (my parents would have locked me up until I was 90!), plus I was not inclined to do so, but I must admit, I liked the music & was somewhat fasinated with the whole concept, but most of us grew up and went on to become responsible adults. The hippie era, like the dinosaur era is extinc, but un-like the dinosaurs, we can't use hippies to make fuel.

    • Posted By: SomeChick1234 @ 08/05/2008 1:09:50 AM

Well, sure, that's the obvious message of the article but it's a little deeper than that. Why don't you reread it a couple times to find out why we're so offended with this author's article....

I think you forgot to you mentioned the "appeal" to say it in some way that Jackeline Kennedy Onassis had, althought she was not beautiful per se, she had that kind of sexy or sensual vibe going and in several ocassions outshine her presidential husband. Definetively I would not see her as the conservative wife your describing in this article and that didn't stop the American Public from making her an icon and adoring her.

    • Posted By: star3 @ 08/06/2008 6:24:19 PM

Agree. Princess Diana was beautiful, too, and she was an asset to her country by being involved in various charities, ect. Being beautiful does not make you exempt from responsibility, nor does being rich, although, Paris Hilton seems to feel her responsibility ends at the rest of us being granted the honor of hearing about her contributions to her favorite charity--the local liquor store.

  • Posted By: JadedYankee @ 08/04/2008 10:26:49 PM

Perhaps it is because our American women are mostly fat, overweight, uneducated, loudmouthed ugly cows. Of course they would not want an attractive woman to be first lady. They would feel too threathened. When was the last time you saw a slim attractive married American woman? And I suppose you are the model for the poster ad for the leading man in every romantic movie that requires the most hansome man on the planet. Grow up, Jaded, learn to appreciate people for their good qualities, and when you are able to do that, you will be amazed at how beautiful they appear. We love people in SPITE of their faults--not because of them. I have seen people who were physically beautiful, and granted, that is the first thing that will get your attention, however, in some cases, the minute they open their mouth, they evaporate into an un-attractive persom whom you, tactfully, tip toe away from--or sometime run away from. And the reverse can be true, as stated above. Change yourself, and others may "change" to become what you admire. Decide who REALLY has the problem.

    • Posted By: star3 @ 08/06/2008 1:33:41 PM

Well, well, aren't we jusr the little ball of sunshine. Nice to see you, too. Obviously, you don't live in the same America that the rest of us do, or possibly, even on the same planet. Maybe you are wearing those funny fat glasses that distorts everything. Take them off, dear, and you may be surprised to see that America has many beautiful women who are slim. No country has a monopoly on overweight people, and I'm fairly sure you know that, but you sound bitter toward life in general, which would cause you to post negative remarks, regardless of the subject being discussed. Sorry to hear you are "jaded" against women, but perhaps you have just been associating eith the wrong type. Try a new attitude and you might attract a better quality of people, including women. Being bitter will only succeed in giving you ulcers and causing your face to look like a mask of anger, and people will avoid you, you will be the only one hurt by your attitude, but if thats what you are striving for, then, congratulations, you are succeeding.

This "puritan" thing in American public life is hypocrisy of the first order! And then tcontroversies over one's "Chromosome composition" or "concentration of melanin in skin" to top it all! The world just witnessed the frenzy in America over both Hillary Clinton and Barck Obama seeking presidential nomination and being debated as being "matter for history"! In the oldest democracy which boasts of "equality" and "liberty" as its hallmark, being a woman or/and a "black" is still an issue of enormous importance is indeed laughable! ... Grow up, I say!

  • Posted By: wiseroption @ 08/05/2008 6:20:47 PM

As long as women remain as wise as they presently are...that is, continuing to act demure & lady-like, the day will surely come when they will look into their man's eyes & say "But Honey, I did not craft or sew one single thread in this handbasket that we are heading to Hell in".

You say, "In America, we like.....we expect........." . You do not speak for me & likely not for thousands, possibly even millions of others. I have lived here all of my 51 years & all I can say about this is that you are possibly speaking on the behalf of men as you think, but not we Americans.

Politics has no place for a lady, but is in dire need of a woman of integrity and it is not Hilary. More like a Condoleeza Rice.

  • Posted By: retmarut @ 08/05/2008 5:31:24 PM

If we were ever blessed with a woman secure in herself, her beauty and the sexuality she exuded our heads would explode. American society is not mature enough to appreciate such charms. No, we'd rather be numbed through violence and ignorance. As the last eight years have amply demonstrated.

  • Posted By: masterdutches @ 08/05/2008 2:29:12 PM

Setting a good example for others as a wife of someone in an important position is a good thing, as long as you get to still be who you really are. If you are faking it just for the image, then it will all come out eventually anyway.

  • Posted By: redcopper @ 08/05/2008 11:36:40 AM

I guess because they are thin and European, they are supposedly beautiful. Perhaps my sense of sensual beauty still leans toward home grown. Madame Sarkosy has little eyes, a long mouth, thin lips and a very angular face. Sure, she's attractive, but she is no Liv Tyler. And he's nothing to crow about with his typical "a la Francais" snout. The French are marvelous at touting their preferences and their lifestyles which, like us, can be quite superficial. The 35 hour work week? We're talking about appearances here, jacques.
