This is the 21st century.. wake up, the 50's are gone!
What is important is what choices a president makes during his presidency, Obviously, many of you had it all wrong with Bush!! the fact that his wife looks very conservative, did not help him at all, did it??? It has been a disaster...
I don't give a rats ass about politicians private lives or sex or clothes. As long as they do their job, but that's questionable too. Didn't care about Clinton's bs either. We should focus on peoples needs and country well being, not to worry who wears what and what they do w/their doors closed or open. I have to say, Europe is much different.
just because american polital women find it appropriate to look ''ugly" or kind of "nun-like" doesnt mean that the rest of the world muct suffer or be prevented to seeing beautiful women in clothes that actually look good. GOOD Job Carla bru-sarko
Hmmm. . .I'm not sure this viewpoint was adequately considered. Cindy McCain absolutely has supermodel looks, but not among the voters who are between the ages of 18 - 23. America's population is aging, and as we age, so do our tastes. We may look at the cute young things, but we have an appreciation of older women as well--hence the whole urban cougar phenomenon. The first ladies tastes are reflective of our expectations of anyone who is the spouse of a president--we want them to be classy people who are not a laughingstock amongst the world leaders with whom they will be rubbing elbows. Would we thrown out Christie Brinkley or Demi Moore as a potential first lady just because either one of them were beautiful? I don't think so. Furthermore, Maria Shriver has definitely broken that whole beauty barrier. She is an incredibly classy, down-to-earth woman who represents her state and country well. I think we have come of an age that we recognize that there are many foibles that potential political candidates and their spouses. In fact, I would have had at least a shred of respect for Bill Clinton if he had been straight up about his use of pot rather than dancing around the issue and THEN admitting it. We are willing to live with sexuality and sex appeal--within the boundaries of marriage. I think most of us are not interested parading the tawdry as our leadership, though. Oh. . .and by the way, John McCain's daughter is beautiful as well. I'm not sure, but I even think we could live with that without having to hang our national head too low.
Great, insightful article. Saw Bruni's interview with Barbara Walers, She seemed very candid and honest. America is not ready for such honesty. Read Hillary Clinton's book. Seems there was always somebody finding something wrong with whatever she wore or did her hair. There is no way the First Lady of this great country will please all of the people all of the time. It seems like a very stressful and under-appreciated position. Hilary went to many countries as a US advocate and women's freedom fighter. Still, she drew criticism. Her heart was in the right place; and I found it admirable. No matter what hapens at this election, Hilary inspired a lot of women here and abroad. The effect of which may be seen in the future...
Remember...Cindy had an affair with John McCain while he was still married. Very Carla-esque.
I don't understand why we even CARE who or what Sarkozy is married to. They have NO moral values in France and we WANT to emulate them???? God forbid. I prefer our conservative values and some may be surprised in November....there are more of us out there than you think. Who listens to the liberal news anymore? Very few....millions more listen to the sensible conservatives. LONG may they reign.
I believe that respect is maybe one of the most important value you can get and in your case, you are not right. I am French and I'm very shocked by your comment. Generality has never ever been the key to describe a country and I wouldnt be proud, as a french citizen, to say any kind of howler about america. It grieves me a lot to see how you could be so narrow-minded but, anyway, I don't want to emulate your moral values... if I daresay.
What do you mean we french have no moral values??? Do you even know what the word means???? I don't cling to my guns or my religion if this is what you mean... I don't have a gun and when it comes to religion, I do very well without, thank you! Your moral is greed, ignorance, arrogance, hypocrisy and lack of compassioon... this is what you moral values are and lets not fortget all the guns who kill thousand of innocent people every year.... Before you judge the french, look at yoursef in the mirror. We have great morals in france, we have social programs to help the most unfortunate, we do not let people die or loose every thing they have worked for all their lives because they can't afford your stinky health care system.... You live in a world of illusion, you are very far from being the greatest people or country in the world... to me in many ways, you are just like a 3rd world county... 33 million living under the poverty level, 50 millions without insurance, millions homeless... ask them if they think this is the greatest country in the world.... So happy to be moving back to France... back to civilization!

Hmmm. . .I'm not sure I agree with the analysis about Cindy McCain being too old for sex appeal. Sure, she's not going to appeal to the eighteen year olds, but she is still beautiful enough to give Carla Bruni-Sarkozy a run for her money. As I have aged, I am finding that the people I find most attractive are people closest to my age bracket. I might look at something younger and go "Oh, that's nice" but it doesn't replace the appeal of those silver foxes for me. America is aging, and those well-preserved beauties are still going to be appreciated. We expect our first ladies to have a certain amount of class, and the fashion choices of both candidates' wives are reflective of that, but to write them off as "not supermodels" is a bit subjective. Furthermore, I would argue that, while many people envy beauty, the fact is that attractive people still make it farther in life--both men and women. If, say, Christie Brinkley or Demi Moore were potential candidates for first ladies, I don't believe that they would undergo any more or less scrutiny than any other first spouse. Maria Shriver is a prime example of a first lady who is absolutely beautiful and represents her state and her country well. I think , as a country, we are willing to accept some human foibles. For that matter, I think we could even stand a first lady with sex appeal--as long as it was within the boundaries of her marriage. I do believe, though, that we are justifiably picky about the spouse who will represent our country before the world.
I think this line says it all: "The difference is that in France, the public couldn't care less about the public gaffes of its political wives; they're more interested in preserving the 35-hour workweek.." Here in the US, the paparazzi would be pursuing this woman for pictures a'la Britney/Paris without panties. Apparently the French actually have an ISSUE. Imagine that. The NERVE of those people. It's downright un-American.
one of the silliest article I have read ! obviously the author does not know what he is speaking about ! his misknowledge of France and of the French is AMAZING !! French people are politically much more motivated than Americans and care very much about their first lady ! they are generally proud of her provided she behaves, is useful and knows how to hold her rank !! please avoid to publish that sort of crap !!!
Well...the line that says it all: "The difference is that in France, the public couldn't care less about the public gaffes of its political wives; they're more interested in preserving the 35-hour workweek." Here in the US, the paparazzi would be trying to catch her a'la Britney with no panties to gratify the masses. In France, they people seem to actually care about an ISSUE. How un-american can you get?!
nice peace of *** !!
I think Carla is Fabulous. She is real, happy, and pretty. And she loves her country. VIVA FRANCE
I think Carla is FABULOUS . She is real, fun, and happy and she loves her country. VIVA FRANCE
Lets not forget Carla Brun-Hilda is also the woman who had an affair with man-whore of the century Mick Jagger, then later attacked his wife at the time, Jerri Hall, saying, in response to a question by a stupid reporter, as to why she, Jerri was unhappy, " I doon't kneew, insecurity perhaps, lack of activity perhaps?" and then smutted her butt off to do her cat walk routine. Beautiful? I think not. She's a hag in the making.

And it is that exact puritanical behavior of us Americans that put George W in office 8 years ago, and thus why we are in such a economical crisis. We thought that the morality of Bill Clinton was so wrong and that we could not trust another Democrat to dirty up our "whiter than snow whitehouse" and low and behold who did we get? A President that led us into a war, under false pretenses and whose citizens hate us and are just waiting for us to leave. America we are not the only people in this world, and just because someone thinks differently, acts differently or looks differently, doesn't make them wrong and us right. I say more power to President Sarzoky and his wife.
