Democrats under the leadership of Barack Obama want to effectively give away in trust our offshore exclusive economic zone by standing in the way of any current offshore development. Under the 1982 United Nations Law of the Seas Convention the US has an exclusive economic zone of 200 nautical miles and mineral seabed rights up to 350 nautical miles extending along the Continental shelf. A nautical mile is 6080 feet so our exclusive economic zone extends about 240 miles and mineral seabed rights extend 420 miles. The US has the world's largest offshore exclusive economic zone totaling 4.4 million square miles. In comparison, the total land area of the United States is only 3.4 million square miles.
On the East coast alone, if you drive from Key West Florida to Bangor Maine it is 2000 miles. Multiply the 2000 miles by mineral seabed rights extending out 420 miles results in a total of 840,000 square miles of ocean acreage. Because we have the world's largest offshore coastline which is twenty-five percent greater than our land area, it only makes common sense that we exploit our offshore resources to achieve our energy independence.

Democratic disdain for energy production by US companies is evident with the current ownership of former US energy companies. Is it any surprise that the jewell Arco Oil Company which owned 80 percent of our Alaska Oil Reserves was bought out by British Petroleum Corporation at the end of the second administration of Bill Clinton due to the hostile Democratic attitude toward energy companies. It is no accident that the largest US builder of nuclear power plants, Westinghouse Nuclear Power Construction Division was bought out by Japan Toshiba Corporation. While 80 percent of France electricity is generated by nuclear power, only twenty percent in the US is generated due to the successful efforts of Democratic party to kill the US nuclear power industry. Significantly, nuclear power is not considered a mainstay of Democratic plans to address our energy crisis. There is also a worldwide shortage and backlog of orders for oil drilling platforms and oil drilling ships but US shipyards are not building these ships. Only one percent of the world's commercial ships are built in US shipyards. Hold your breath for the Democratic outcry and push for government help to US ship builders to build oil drilling ships in the US.

    According to TIME magazine

    http://www.time.com/time/politics/article/0,8599,1829354,00.html?cnn=yes

John McCain's sole idea to "drill here and drill now" won't produce oil until the year 2030, and then it will only be 200,000 barrels per day. In comparison, the government estimates that if everyone made sure their car tires were fully inflated, we could start to reduce our oil consumption by 800,000 barrels per day, right now.

Extend your inflated PAIN with your vote for McCain

Comment: Hey CornHolyO same question for you as was for DavHerpe:

WHat are the ENERGY EXPERTS saying about offshore drilling, timelime, actuall "impact" to prices, etc? DARE YOU TOANSWER try to make it honest and stay on topic here oilboy.

    ................. .......................... ......................... ........................ ........................... ............................ .........................

HiddeHoHarleyHo...what up BickerChick......stay on topic??? NOT the "Hussein is a mohammed" topic??? That IS my favorite. But, if you want to talk energy....probably over your head......but what the heck...here's a brief summary. HolyRoller is a blogger not an expert (supply vs demand I understand....do you?)...so I'll let an expert I find quite convincing, answer you.........

There's been a huge transfer of power to oil producers. Even at $100 a barrel, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates will earn almost $8 trillion in oil revenues between now and 2020, estimates the McKinsey Global Institute. More troubling are the political implications. "This has really strengthened the Iranians, Russians and Venezuelans to be more provocative in the world," says Larry Goldstein of the Energy Policy Research Foundation. Although governments control crude supplies, private companies have dominated distribution. Anyone can buy oil at a price. Now oil could become a political commodity offered to friends at a discount, withheld from rivals.

How can we retrieve some of our lost power? The first thing is to get out of denial. Stop blaming oil companies and "speculators." Next, we need to expand domestic oil and natural-gas drilling, including Alaska. Although we can't "drill our way" out of this problem, we can augment oil supplies and lessen price strains. It might take 10 years or more, because new projects are huge undertakings. But delay will only aggravate our future problems.

Argue against this SIMPLE TRUTH. Show us all how really goofy, a devout obamamohammed, can really be. Can't blame that on whitey......OOPs...sorry...I forgot how good at that you are.

    YOUR TURN....now STAY ON TOPIC

    NOBAMA!!!

Comment: Well, Uh-hum, I do believe that the money came from people looking to preserve their jobs in their chosen profession. Statements as such are very ignorant and smack at the rights of individuals to choose freely in our Democratic Republic, look up what that means for you that don't know. Congress does not even vote the will of the people. I voted to be represented not have another set of Parents. What happened to majority rule? Over 60% of the citizens of this country want us to drill for oil we are not doing it, Hum, thank you mommy and daddy congress. Oh by the way check out the Chinese rigs across from the Florida keys nice lets watch them drill for Oil, they dont have and dont care about enviromental constraints. Drilling is safe and clean check it out. Just let the rest of the world do it in our back yard. Get educated and get a life. We watch each day as people prey on the dumb and the slow. Common sense in a world where common sense is not so common. Anyway you own nothing in this country regardless except a small voice at best. Don't pay taxes on your home for a couple of years and see who owns it. Duh, but anyway those contributions are made up of PACS and Unions and very little big doners. Ben Franklin said, "Better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. Relax we are just a little Facist now, just a sign of the times. Oh by the way I would like someone to be the CEO of my business that has more than 143 days experience. I could elaborate further but, ah what the hay. God Bless America, God Bless America, my heart hurts for you. Good thing stupidity is not a dibilitating disease. I digress.

I posted this comment on another blog talking about politcal contributions but it will apply here also if you have the ability to read between the lines. Congress needs to lift the OCS moritorium and also allow domestic drilling. Duh, Duh , Duh, now who is resposible? Uh dunno. Oh ok, lets go text and play some video games, uh yea lets go. bye bye

Enter Your Comment Oh by the way, I work in the wind energy business, but we don't have windmills for my car. I prefer gasoline.

What do you do with the wind energy business?

    • Posted By: pearsoncrz @ 08/05/2008 4:18:50 PM

Good point about the Chinese rigs. Anyone who knows anything about oil would understand that an oil field can extend for miles and miles, and by not drilling into the same field ourselves we are letting the Cubans and Chinese take OUR OIL, the same oil we could be pumping out and processing instead of letting Cuba and China take it.

McCain has repeatedly voted against tax credits for renewable energy.
McCain missed votes to require energy companies to produce 20% of energy from renewable sources.
McCain voted against tougher fuel efficiency standards.
McCain opposed $290 million for Research and Development on Renewable Energy, including wind power.

    McCain's record speaks for itself!

Actually, it's more likely the extremists on BOTH sides are responsible for our high gas prices. The extremists in the Democratic Party are either environmentalists, who refuse to allow research in carbonless emissions because they are AGAINST ANY USE of fossil fuels, or are globalizationalists, who believe that the US should only be service oriented: dirty industries like manufacturing ruins their scenic views, and immigrants should do whatever dirty tasks are needed - cleaning, gardening, farming, building, repairing, etc.

The Republican extremists are for big business and only big business.

Both sides are corrupt in their taking of lobbyists money - yes - Unions are lobbyists too.

If you think that imposing a windfall profits tax on the oil companies will help, what do you think will stop them from closing up refineries and moving to Mexico, Cuba or Central America where the tax laws are less severe?

If you think that allowing US trial lawyers to sue OPEC nations in US courts is going to decrease our gas prices, what is to stop OPEC from refusing to sell any oil to us - China and India are closer and willing to pay the price.

Until the extremists Democrats can come up with solutions for ALL transportation energy needs, we still need oil - for the jets that carry them first class around the world - and home every weekend (Thursdays through Mondays), for the 18-wheelers that transport all the goods and foods we consume, for the boats that catch our fish, crabs, lobsters etc for our personal consumption (unless we are all to be vegans).

    Zombiehero:

You are correct: The strategic oil reserves ARE for emergency purposes. During the 2005 hurricane aftermath, Bush opened up the reserves so we could HAVE oil available because the oil rigs stopped production and evacuated. And, it's hurricane season again.

Just imagine what the price would jump to if Obama has his way. OPEC stops selling oil to us because the Windfall Profits Tax act he supports includes a provision that US trial lawyers can sue OPEC nations to increase their oil production to meet our demands. Oil companies close down refineries within the US due to the Windfall Profits tax and move to Central America. No 30-day oil reserve; hurricanes hit the Gulf and all oil rigs shut down production and evacuate to the mainland; We now have NO SOURCE of oil to refine for our own consumption. The entire nation is at a standstill. (BUT there would be no pollution emitted.)

And, Obama's main selling point is that he has good judgment. He was against the Iraqi war, so he MUST have what it takes to be POTUS. He obviously does not have the common sense to think of the various scenarios. That's the problem with most extremists - they can only see things THEIR way!

  • Posted By: Zombiehero @ 08/05/2008 3:29:08 AM

The strategic oil reserve, I think, has to be reserved for a genuine emergency. You have a situation, let's say, where there was a major oil facility in Saudi Arabia that was destroyed as a consequence of terrorist acts, and you suddenly had huge amounts of oil taken out of the world market, we wouldn't just be seeing $4-a-gallon oil. We could see a situation where entire sectors of the country had no oil to function at all. And that's what the strategic oil reserve has to be for.

Something the media continues to ignore. The other ironic (non-oil industry) connection to the Middle East:

Obama = Close friend of Reverand Wright
Rev. Wright = Close friend of Louis Farrakhan
Louis Farrakhan = Close friend of Iran's President
    ....Birds of a Feather, folks.

These are the people who will influence the White House. Don't believe it?

    Translation?
Obama spells the destruction of Israel.....War in the Middle East far greater than Iraq.....and this poor rookie won't even intend to do it.

I other words he lied like Mr. McCain did, and was found out. Meanwhile, the staunch and uncommunicative will still blame them even though the lied was ID'd and resolved. Bloogers like Mr. Pearsoncrz, even after reading the report, still say the lie was "factually" true. That type of unmovable hate permeates these blogs.

    • Posted By: pearsoncrz @ 08/04/2008 5:05:46 PM

Nope, even Newsweek had to admit that everything in the McCain ad was factually true.

It was the "inference" that Newsweek chose to draw, after parsing the language and inserting some of its own, that Fact Check said was false.

Of course Obama didn't cause high gas prices, that would be silly, but he also is against doing anything to alleviate the situation now.

Obama proposes that we deplete our strategic reserves instead, you know the ones that will keep us from being blackmailed by the OPEC nations if they ever wanted to force the US to do something, like let them obliterate Israel without retaliating.

      • Posted By: Zombiehero @ 08/04/2008 8:36:24 PM

They will parse and interpret the information in anyway that will benefit their own ideals and agenda. Mr. Post Partisanship has only increased the level of partisanship bickering.

  • Posted By: pearsoncrz @ 08/04/2008 3:27:03 PM

And note the use of quotations in this article, where Newsweek has added the "why it asks" when the ad doesn't actually have that language at all. It simply points out the current status of the price of oil and then points out that the democrat helped change the law so that tax revenues would grow over time. Factually the ad is correct, and the democrat stands by his actions. Whether an ad valorem tax is appropriate for something that affects the ability of small businessmen and truckers to do business is another question, one which the candidate should answer.

  • Posted By: pearsoncrz @ 08/04/2008 3:22:12 PM

Misstatement by Newsweek, not surprising. McCain doesn't blame Obama for the rising gas prices, he blames him for there being "no end in sight" because Obama and other democrats were preventing the issue of offshore drilling from even coming to a vote in the Senate.

Of course, Newsweek is a biased resource, so you would expect them to parse the ad in order to make McCain look bad.
