This article verified that dogs, cats, horses rabbits, birds, rodents and virtually any creature has the innate capacity to be an invaluable and vital member of an individual's or family's household.

Enter Your Comments Sorry, this is not true in reality. Only cats and dogs actually occupy the ecological niche that human beings occupy-one where they can walk our city streets, ride in our cars, sleep in our beds, sit at our tables . . . these other beings can be kept under some circumstances, especially if someoneelse has abandoned them in the dead of winter; but for the most part all creatures except dogs, cats, and the group categorized as farm or ranch animals-sufffer terribly, and live truncated lives as the result of captivity, a captivity that is not really based on even domestication.

Why have an exhibit that is suppose to be monumental about pets without discussing what the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Humane Society, and other organizations like these have to put up with because ot the 'wonderful' pet-animal industry?

The more I know of man the more I prefer the company of dogs.

Dog is my co-pilot (but I am getting tired of stopping at every darn fire hydrant.) ;-)

Long before there was E-Mail there was Pee-Mail.

Imaigne how shocked people will be when they get to the Pearly gates and find out that it was supposed to read "In DOG we trust"!

Why is it so hard for people to accept cats as a common household pet? I am never amazed at how cats always seem to get a bad rap or some slightly negative or unfavorable comment. Ernest Hemmingway loved cats, why is it so unbelievable that Twain would too? There are more cats statistically per household than there are dogs or birds. Dogs are great pets, I have nothing against dogs, but they are a lot more work. I don't have to walk my cat and they don't need constant attention. Cats are very rewarding and offer a lot of love [just b/c they don't want to lick you every five sec's doesn't mean they don't need human companionship]. I have two siamese cats and one of them actually plays fetch with me. Sometimes these stories come off as dog vs. cat and that just really irritates me.

Cats besides dogs are excellent pets-they are the only two animals that actually occupy the ecological niche of human beings-they sit at our tables with us, sleep in our beds with us, and all without any significant disease barrier.

Poor Essie--sounds horrible! I am glad you don't dislike cats because of your allergy--I've met so many people who hate cats just because they're allergic, and it breaks my heart, especially since many of them seem to think it gives them the right to bring harm to the creatures :(
My boyfriend was a dog person before he moved in with me--as it turns out, he'd just never met a cat with personality before! Within a week, my cat Ghost had him turned around completely, and they're close pals to this day. I am a cat person myself, but lately it's been my little Pembroke Welsh Corgi named Boomerang that's been nearest and dearest to me. Just goes to show you never know what form your next best friend is going to take.

I have a great 3 year old cat. It's amazing how much personality he has. I always thought of dog's as the 'people' lovers, but my mind has since changed with Gil strolling into my life. He meet's me at the door, follow's me around, plays fetch and growls when someone is at the door. He's a great animal, i'm happy we met each other.

About once every decade, I have contact with a cat. This time, I let the cat take two licks on the back of my hand. Within seconds, my hand blistered up where the cat had touched it, and my hand looked and felt like I had second-degree burns. This lasted for a few hours. I do not harbor any disrespect to cats or their owners, as long as the cats have all their shots and are spayed or neutered, I have to stick with dogs for health reasons. There are people allergic to dogs as well, my allergies are to cats only.

I thought this article was very funny, yet very true at times. Great stuff. It really makes you think about how far we've come as pet owners (or, is it that the pets own us now?)
