as this delightfully entertaining person wrote
" these hillbillys wouldn't have health care even IF they could afford it,they would rather have lottery tickets"
i have something to say. firstly that they have absolutly NO idea what they are talking about. As a resident of southwest va AND a redneck hillbilly to boot i have health care AND asm in perfectly good health. as is the rest of my family. sure we have our problems but doesnt everyone. unfortunatly everyone in my region is not as fortunate as me and my family. but that has nothing to do with buying lottery tickets. it has more to do with our federal and state government!! we are a proud people and very family oriented. we take care of ourselves the best way we can. i am a PROUD member of my region and i am ranked very HIGH in my high school. many people in my region have high IQ's and more intelligent than many others. we know how to SURVIVE when many others are unfortunate enough to barely be able to put food on their tables. We may need to recieve free health care but thats ok because at least we have the opertunities that many do not. plus if it wasnt for this region God only knows what would happen to this country. You need US more than we need YOU!!1

well fatjoey, it is obvious that your intelligence level is lower than many of these hillbillies, this is a national problem not an isolated problem. If you look around you most people in any area buy lottery tickets with the hopes of winning, this is obvious by the high winning totals that are a pertentage of the tickets sold. Perhaps next time you should look at the nation as a whole and then you will see that the middle class is disappearing at an alarmaing rate and a majority of people do not have insurance, or it is so inadequate our country as a whole should be embarrassed as to the way it really treats our citizens.

Instead of criticizing this situation, wasting your breath, what are you doing to help? All of you read the last three paragraphs? There are the three different ways to get involved. Make a difference for someone else and for yourself. It feels good to help and feels bad to criticize. Everyone will remember those who helped many years to come and forget you who criticized in a matter of minutes. Just click onto the links to see how we can help.

In Canada, we spend less per person on health care than in the U.S. and everyone is covered. If you believe that nonsense about people dying in the streets of Canada waiting for care, come and have a look. I keep hearing it's about "choice." How much choice do the 40 million people without medical insurance have? What about the people tied to a lousy HMO by their employer? I'll take our system any day.

I am reading about so many people that say go back to school, get a different job, move, etc. It isn't that easy for a lot of people. Here in Michigan, there are people with college degrees working low paying jobs because that is all that is available. Moving isn't always financially feasible or possible. A college degree doesn't guarantee anything, anywhere. A lot of times a good job boils down to who you know or who your family is. Not everyone can go to college, not everyone can be book smart or is good in school. I personally am very grateful for the people that change my oil or are there to check me out at the grocery store, stock the shelves, pick up the garbage, and mop the floors in our office. I think if you really looked around, the lower income people aren't living beyond their means, there aren't any means to live beyond the basic necessities. Sometimes poor nutrition is a causal effect. Have you checked out the price of fresh fruits & vegetables? I thankfully am able to have a small garden and can/freeze a lot, but many can't. AFFORDABLE health care, sliding fees, government supplement (not government giving) is needed. I rather see my tax dollars go to help the mother and father that is out there working 40 hours a week even at minimum wage rather than someone sitting doing nothing, not to mention my tax dollars paying for government perks for politicians that earn enough money to pay for the "perks" themselves without breaking their budgets.

HAVE ANY OF YOU EVEN BEEN TO A "V.A."HOSPITAL? IF YOU HAD YOU WOULDN'T WANT UNIVERSAL HEATH CARE!!!

Comment: Well, instead of National Healthcare in this country, our current administration prefers to invade foreign countries to take the natural oil deposits that formed under their sand and control it so we can take it. It's an old story. I vote we indict Bush, Chenney, Rumsfeld and Rove on war crimes and them institute National Health care. Oh. and while we're at it, we could pour some money into solar energy rather than invade Iran next.Comment: Actually, we may all want to learn how to speak Chinease. They''ll be our Landlords soon. And has everyone heard about the Superhighway, that our government denies exists, and the Trilateral Commisson and the Amero? America is in it's last years. Our government sold us out.

It seems that many of these comments (such as jackchloe) have been written by people living in Utopia who have met little to no adversity in their lives. The fact is that this country is headed for crisis, and if people continue to place blame on each other rather than do something, we will all suffer greatly. I see many comments about the money we give Africa, but what about the BILLIONS we have poured into the Iraq war? I see comments discouraging universal health care due to multiple reasons that simply aren't true. No one should expect a perfect system, but if we can improve what we have, why wouldn't we? We should take the parts of all the systems that DO work, and put them together to make something that works for our society. It's time for change, and we all need to listen to each other and work together to bring our country back to peace, prosperity and health...

I agree with a lot of what you say. But, the insurance companies who have their hands in politicians pockets have something to do with this, I'm sure. Politicians should be normal people who want to help their community; instead, they become politicians as a career and do it for the benefits, notariety, and money.

maybe if people start becoming doctors TO HELP THE SICK rather then GET RICH that would help?

    • Posted By: northstar11 @ 08/05/2008 12:42:55 PM

lol Fat good idea. When is your next free clinic? I assume you live by your own words and have gone into the medical field to provide free health care for others right?

This is so sad. I've said for years that America needs to clean up it's own back yard; before going into third world countries to help. We have people here in desperate need and we turn a blind eye and deaf ear to our own people. Wake up America. It's in our face and we still don't see it. It's not about politics, it's about someone caring enough about us to help. I don't care which party. Let's also don't forget all the individual's who send there money and help outside this country. The government does not control that aspect of it. Open your eyes, and take responsibility for your own actions. I could go on and on; but would anyone listen? I doubt it.

Isn't it odd that most other civilized countries are able to provide their citizens with health and dental care, while we, one of the richest nations, is unable or unwilling to do the same? I've lived in Europe and often visit Canada...in fact had a heart attack while in Halifax, Nova Scotia 6 yrs. ago..and got excellent treatment. I'm also an RN so have witnessed how our health system works. We need one that covers all..not just a few.

I feel universal healthcare would be a wonderful asset to americans. It would allow all of us to receive the healthcare medical and dental that we need. The government would set the standards of payment to the hospitals and doctors. EVERY american would benefit. We could do away with MEDICAID!!! For instance, Lets take a typical open heart surgery patient. Most insurance companies will pay only 80%. An average surgery of this type cost approximately $65,000.00. Leaving the patient with the burden of the 20% approximately $13,000.00. This burden causes a trinkle down effect to repay!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The government will be in total control of what the doctors and the hospital would be paid, yes , we as americans will have to come together and pay more taxes but everyone will benefit. ( Nothing is FREE not even society )as this gentleman has written. Unfortunately for the law offices they may not be able to sue independently, they would have to sue the government, that is why most lawyers would object to this idea. I feel everyone has a responsibility to work, unfortunately the insurance company's for medical and dental make you pay extremely high premiums and then add on the 20%. And also, where did the 8 percent of americans that don't have healthcare come from????? you need to research that one!!! I feel universal medical and dental healthcare would significantly help society.
    Dental Hygienist
And by the way I currently do not have medical coverage for my family

In many ways the US has become very Third World. We have and continue to spend all our money on the machinery of war, while the rest of the world advances. There is tthis pervasive idea that anything that helps the average guy is socialism. Conservative ideology has won the day. The same people that are getting health care from the Docs without borders probably vote Republican because they are against Gay marraige or some similiar hot button issue. So what the heck, let's spend another trillion on Iraq over the next 4 years, borrow as much as the Chinese will allow, lower the tax rates on the rich, etc. Then stand back watch the slide. Don't forget ...vote Republican.

These volunteer clinics are wonderful, and part of capitalistic design. If the government controlled healthcare, we'd all be waiting in line and our income tax rate would be 60%. Remember how well the government did with Social Security? Let's let government do what they were originally intended; protect the states from foreign attack.

If we weren't providing free health care to the illegals who daily flood our hospitals and ERs, we could afford to take care of our own citizens.

  • Posted By: FATJOEY @ 08/05/2008 12:33:51 PM

maybe it would be more affordable if we didn't provide 11 million illegal mexicans FREE health care? THINK MAYBE???

  • Posted By: aragucci @ 08/05/2008 12:32:01 PM

The most important comment in the article is that we choose not to provide basic health and dental care to millions of Americans. The problem of provideing health and dental care to the uninsured is a diifficult, but solveable one. Many countries poorer than ours do a much better job.

The state of health care in this country is one of the greatest failures of our government and a source of embarassment for this country exploited by our enemies and contributing to our reputation as a militaristic, uncaring society.
