Health care is not free. The government does a poor job of managing business as is seen from the current deficit. This would make matters worse. Germany loses half their doctors every year because their opportunities are better elsewhere. When did you see a major healthcare breakthrough come from Germany or other European nations in the last 50 years? They all come from the US and this system because we poor the research dollars into the pot. The better question is why did the young girl in her 20's need her teeth pulled in the first place? It is her responsibility to take care of them. I earned less than the texas high school teacher last year and I paid for my family's health care (we had a baby last year), my insurance, food, and still managed to have birthdays and Christmas. Americans have to understand that they must stand on their own two feet and Obama, McCain, or anyone else will not do anything about it nor should we expect them to. Lastly, I work with a German doctor that came over from Europe and will tell you we are better off. Like to wait for 3 years for your heart surgery? You will be dead by the time you get it in those countries. If you are over 50-years-old in the UK, you would not get a renal transplant like you do here. You would just be out of luck. You know the alternative. I wish Americans were more educated about health care.

People can be ignorant, (sick of the whining). YOu obviously have money and can afford things like dental care. I am married, I have two children, I went to college, both my husband and I work full time jobs. I carry health insurance for all of us through my employer. It costs be about a third of what I make to pay for the benefits. My daughter has been hospitalized four times in her four years of life, has asthma. We do not smoke, we live by a strict budget, and yet, can not afford the rising health care costs. My seven year old needs braces. A roughly 3000 dollar expense that our dental insurance will only pay a thousand for. So we are forced to make a choice. My child, will go without braces and will likely face tooth and jaw pain at various times over the next few years, so we can continue to put food on the table, and pay on our daughters medical bills so the hospitals don't send us to collections. And when her medications were costing us 400 dollars a month, it was hard to make ends meet with out salaries. So i took a second job. I saw my children, one of which is ill, for a total of one to two hours a day. I would love to see you have to make those choices and then judge those of us that don't have the "expendible cash" lying around. There is nothing more tragic for a parent than being forced to choose between keeping a roof over our family's head or paying for health care we can't afford. IT is not a matter of can not or will not. Sometimes, like many other things in this world, the choice comes down to a simple issue of MONEY. Oh, and if you can afford the ever rising costs of health care PLEASE feel free to send some of your cash MY way!

Obviously if you have a college education and you are barely making ends meat then look for another job with better benefits, or here is a better one quit living outside your means. I have a degree in criminal justice but drive a truck and work my butt off and my wife works as a receptionist we don???t make a lot of money, but my job has pretty good benefits. I could be a cop anywhere, but I choose not to because the pay well sucks and most of the benefits that the states and city???s offer are well crap. I don???t mind clinics helping people like this not one bit. My wife and I have money we set aside in our budget that we give to charity its is just the right thing to do, but this article is blowing smoke up everybody butt like we need universal health care because there all these people without and that is simply not true. I do believe that insurance companies are crooks and something needs to be done to straighten them out. The biggest problem in this country is that people everywhere think they have to have the biggest and nicest house and cars and are not living within their means finically. I don???t like to belittle anyone and I am all for living the American dream, I own my home my car???s are paid for and I am trying to get my house paid off as soon as I can. I would have loved to bought a bigger house and stuff but I like having money left over to go do things; and for that emergency that is just waiting right around the corner. I use to struggle and couldn???t ever seem to get ahead then I got turned onto Dave Ramesy. His plan sure helped me I recommend it to all people. Go to your local library and get the books it really puts things into perspective. I don???t know your situation and can???t judge but there is always something better out there and always better ways to do things we just have to look and find it.

Instead of being a Cop or doing something good for you and your community with the degree you have, you are driving a truck so you can get better health insurance.... Do you see the problem here? I rather have you doing something more productive with your education so you can help this country become more competetive in the world. Lack of health care is not only about money, it also affects the choices we can make about our careers and fulfilment of our dreams.

Kudos to Tim Kaine for attending this and setting up the satellite dental offices. He really gets the unbalance in this country. Some people turn their nose up at the less fortunate and label them lazy. Some people are lazy. But healthcare should be a right. And if you are twenty five working in a shoe store for minimum wage, you can not afford health insurance. Period. You should not have to work two jobs just to afford the insurance. This problem will be worse in a McCain administration. He wants to take away the tax incentives from companies that provide healthcare to their employees. Which is where most people, including myself, receive their health insurance. This election is so important.

whats more important, your familys health insurance or your cars auto insurance? funny, all the people who cant afford health insurance sure are driving cars????

    • Posted By: jshim @ 08/05/2008 4:51:03 PM

I 'm pretty sure that people have to drive to get to work. Most areas sprawled things out and with no mass transit available in most areas you have no choice but to drive. Yes, they have a car but it's so they can get to a low pay job without benefits. As you surely know- the CEO's are raking in the cash leaving nothing for anyone else. Their pay goes up due to geting rid of employees , getting rid of benefits etc. (except their own bonuses and all). I've lived in the south, most people there are definitely missing teeth and many die quite young. I guess that's the plan- "kill off all the poor people". We wouldn't be that poor if the CEO's weren't so filthy, grossly rich. That just screws everyone over- except 50 people or whatever. I'm not afraid of socialism- countries under that banner seem to have top notch health care that doesn't bankrupt people.

The richest country in the world can't even take care of its own people- Why? GREED, GREED, GREED
How is that CANADA can have a national health system that give people the comfort that when they do a have an emergency they're are not afraid to go to the hospital- as for the mighty USA - if your not financially secure - expect to pay thousands and thousands. We can easily come up with billions of dollars to roam around some unwelcome dessert blowing up ragheads?????????

    • Posted By: FATJOEY @ 08/05/2008 12:53:50 PM

WHY? BECAUSE CANADA DOESN'T NEED A NATIONAL DEFENSE BUDGET,THEY KNOW AMERICA WILL PROTECT THEM!

The real issue is the healthcare workers you have people with 2yr degrees making $45,000-$60,000 and those with 4yr degrees making $50,000-$80,000 and dr's making well over $100,000. Insurance Companies also want to make a profit so they charge companies more and more so some small companies can't afford it. So when people with no coverage come around they can't pay what insurances will pay because the healthcare workers want so much money. It's a vicous cycle that will never be broken and will get increasingly worse over the years. It's all about money and they (insurance companies and healthcare workers) don't care about the people. And that's the truth.

    • Posted By: 900100317 @ 08/05/2008 4:38:26 PM

Let us also remember that those healthcare and insurance companies demand workers...this helps our unemployement rate. Without those jobs, more people are out of work.....we are chasing our tails, people. I am not in favor of Universal Healthcare.....however, if it comes to be, do you think my paycheck will increase as I will no longer have to pay the monthly premiums these insurances charge? Will my employer increase my salary by the amount they will no longer have to pay to cover me or my dependents? No way.....my employer will benefit from no longer having to pay healthcare costs.......I will suffer as I will no longer be able to choose the healthcare plan I wish to have......all because the indigent people of this nation demand to be coddled and taken care of. There have always been social issues like healthcare (or lack of it) going back to the beginning of man. This is not a United States of America issue....this is a ethical issue. But people are wanting governments to now be their moms and dads. Yet they do not want Big Brother watching them or asking questions. Sounds like we are still teenagers wanting our way and crying if we do not get it.

We should ask our politicians to answer a basic question - why our country pays the most for health care and get the least in return. Until we force them to respond to that millions of us will be an injury or disease away from poverty, bankruptcy - or even worse.

  • Posted By: Rumsita @ 08/05/2008 4:36:49 PM

I completely agree with leprechaun. When every single person in this country has the education and health care they need, then we can worry about helping people around the world. For now, we need to stop ignoring those in THIS country that need us. Bring all those soldiers home, and use the medics to provide free health care to people who can't afford it, and use those tanks and Hummers to transport people to the doctors.
It is inappropriate for the US government to presume that it knows what is best for people in other countries when it can't even begin to grasp what is best for the people who live within our borders. Quit spending all my tax dollars on people in other countries. Spend it on the people here, and educate them on how to provide for themselves.
First begin with sex education so they learn how not to get pregnant before they can provide an appropriate life for themselves, let alone a child. I had it, and I abstained (and not for religious reasons either) until I knew I would be able to take personal responsibility for my actions should I get pregnant. I don't blame these people for choosing that path; instead I blame the fact that they didn't know how to stop the vicious poverty cycle.
It breaks my heart that the woman in the story wanted all her teeth taken, even the good ones, because she didn't know when she would have the opportunity to see a dentist again.

I hate to assume, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if you were correct in this thought. You know what I believe in? Karma. And when it comes around, for many, I think it's gonna be pretty ugly.

I can say that these people who have negative comments are unfeeling or uncaring or definitely UNCHRISTIAN!. If someone is need then I'm sure anyone who would want to help. What we are upset about..what ALOT OF PEOPLE IN AMERICA are upset about it the people who want to be handed everything and not have to work for it. I'm sure if you read the Bible you would find alot of passages about the fruits of labor, and working for what you get. Please tell me the passage where God says "hey sit on your lazy butt and let the government take care of you". I give to those truly in need, not those who don't want to work.

BTW...that lil comment you made about us giong to hell shows that you pass judgement just as good as the rest of us...soo see ya down there!

    • Posted By: 900100317 @ 08/05/2008 4:29:30 PM

Now that is a useful comment. Why are you envious of those who worked hard to get what they have? They both provide many $$ to charity....the problem is that begatting only begats more.....the more more donated, the more people want....as a collective we, we will not stop until we have run everyone into the poorhouse with us.

  • Posted By: ebtreb @ 08/05/2008 1:21:09 PM

how can we consider ourselves so superior, when we can't afford to take care of our people. we can afford to give oil companies tax incentives but can't give human beings proper health care. we have a long way to go before we will be a truly civilized nation.

    • Posted By: Velo Route @ 08/05/2008 2:47:37 PM

Being patriotic is no about waving the flag but taking care of our people. But we are neither .we are a bunch a selfish individualistic people who could care less about the other person, contrary to all the phony claims that are made! (i:e) great nation great people..etc.....

To all the US all health care is not free in Canada. You pay for all dental care and some health treatments but it is not burdensome.

  • Posted By: Rumsita @ 08/05/2008 4:20:37 PM

It is heartbreaking stories like this that make me wonder why the US is so involved in the affairs of other countries. I say we bring it all in and stay out of other people's business until every person in this country has appropriate care. Why are we worried about people in other countries who cannot subsist when we have people here who cannot subsist.

The argument of, "people are being mistreated in other countries" does not hold weight with me. Give me a break! People are being mistreated in THIS country. When each person in the US can live with appropriate health care, a way of caring for themselves (where Welfare is only for the disabled who CANNOT work, and as a temporary fix, not a way of life as it is now), only THEN should we consider helping other people out.

I believe that what is happening in this country is a form of ethnic cleansing - letting the people who haven't been given the proper education to allow them to provide for themselves is simply setting them up to fail. They don't have proper "reproductive education", so 15-yr olds get pregnant when they don't have any way of caring for themselves let alone another human being. They can't educate their kids on how to break the cycle because they don't know.

After reading many of these posts, my only question is - what can you do to make a difference? A lot of posts do a lot of blaming (blame the government, insurance companies, health providers, other countries, and even other poor people), but what about you? What can you do? How can you help? This article moved me to tears, and caused me to donate just a few dollars to REM. Should things be changed? Absolutely. Can the government help? Definitely. But maybe, we are the change that needs to be made. Can't donate? Volunteer. Can't volunteer? Spread the word. Stop blaming and start doing. Everyone can do something. It reminds me of the famous quote: "God, I sure wish You'd do something to help all these poor people!" And God answers: "I did! I made you!"

c'mon poggy - it seems to me that you might benefit from a couple of months in that part of the country. Most of those folks are Democrats if they are registered to vote at all, have little education and just get along day to day.

Their concerns do not relate in any way, shape or form to what the rest of the nation has concerns about. Flag burning? Never - most of them love this country, in spite of it's failings. The health care issue must be solved and a National Health Care plan, which in any way resembles that of Canada or the UK will be a failure. We would all have to be severly taxed to provide what we'd need to have for such a plan to work. suppose you have to have lived there to know that.

And any time a Canadian needs health care fast, they head down to the US to get it done. Since 95% of Canadians live within an hour's drive of the US, this works. Who are we supposed to go to? Mexico?

I am from that area and I can understand that there are truly people are in need of health care. DO NOT FALL FOR THIS BULL STORY!. There are people that are in need but there are alot of people in those area' s that take advantage of every free thing that comes their way. I grew up with people who that had nice homes, took regular vacations to Gatlinburg, TN, who would get a new car every few years and still go stand out side of the free clinics to get free health care. Because they knew they could get away with it and those are the same people who can afford to buy groceries but would still stand in line for free commodities. There are people who would rather get a government check rather than have to get a job to support thier family. I grew up an hour away from Wise, VA. and there are more scammers on the welfare systems than there are genuine people who actually need it. There are business's that try to move into the area but because they can't keep up a workforce move out because it's easier to get a government check than it is to be responsible for a job. So when I read this story of "oh poor applachian people who live in pain" I know its crap because people can work and don't. If you don't believe me...Look up lawyer Eric C. Conn. He is an ssi/disability lawyer. He makes alot of money getting people on thier "rightful" disability checks and takes a portion of their back pay. If you drive into eastern Kentucky towards Pikeville, Ky or Prestonsburg, Ky you will see his big billboards, and mannequins dressed like him adversiting that he can help you get you disability. Trust me there are poor people in Appalachia but it's not because of the circumstances or the area... it's because they would rather live off the government than have to get a job or heaven forbid move where work would be. I left Eastern Ky to go to college, I got loans but I paid them off, I moved to Cincinnati, Ohio in search of a good job and to get married. I know it's far from home but sometimes you have to make a decision of sit and starve or go out and take care of yourself.

This is just another story about how we need "Universal Health Care" to help those poor desperate people. What those people need is realize that the government isn't there to take care of you.. you do it yourself!

I make $125K a year in New York, pay for health insurance and dental insurance, pay almost $20K in income taxes, and can't afford to go to the dentist or the eye doctor. Stop telling us about the cheaters. We can catch them after the rest of us get healthy enough to see them and run after them.

  • Posted By: leprechaun1230 @ 08/05/2008 4:11:23 PM

It should be a source of complete embarrassment to the government of the USA, that we have one of the worst healthcare systems in the entire world. We spend untold billions on a questionable war, decide to send millions to nations far and wide to help them with their difficulties. Any illegal alien that enters this country is assured medical care at no expense, food, shelter and an education. Yes, these are ILLEGALS. We can find money for anything, any whim of those that govern, yet, when it comes to available and affordable healthcare for OUR OWN, we are not able to afford it. I think a large part of the issue is that our legislators, for the most part, are totally out of touch with their constituency. As the economy gets worse the ability to afford medical care will be all the more difficult.
One can only hope and pray that some day soon, we will acknowledge this healthcare problem, and put the level of determination to it's fix, that we as a nation have put into getting a man on the moon, or now, going to Mars. Personally, I really don't give a damn if there is or ever was water on Mars. We have more important things to do right here at home.
