People in England pay for a Queen and other royalty so how smart can they be? France is another country that was liberated by the U.S.A. and now the bunch of wussies want to tell us how to run our Country! You are a bunch of idiots who believe you don't pay anything! Who do you believe pays for your sorry butt to have all this stuff done? Keep your noses out of our business if you live in another country! Also where are the Drs taught that take such good care of you? In the United States!!

I worked all my life to have the things I do and I'm not giving it away to some sorry SOB who won't work! Now you want a government who cares more about baseball players steroid use to tell me the medical care I need. Get out of our Country and go back to your Socialist world!

"France is another country that was liberated by the U.S.A..."
Funny, if it weren't for French support during the American Revolution, there never would have been a United States. Sounds like John Q. Public is the idiot...I'd much rather see all the idiots leave this country before the foreigners...

keepasmile - you are absolutely right! However, some people, for whatever reason, are simply unable to pay for a good education, you are one of the lucky ones. Again, where I come from, the land of Oxford and Cambridge (UK) education is FREE, it is a right just like healthcare - not a luxury. I come from one of the best educated countries in the world and I was lucky enough to be able to take advantage of that without ever having to worry about where the money would come from. America is in deep trouble, this country needs to wake up and take a long hard look at what's around them, then and only then, will you realise that you have been fed a line of garbage. People need to stop taking this nonsense lying down! Why is it deemed acceptable - someone please explain this to me!

Thank you for your comments!! Remember what I said about it not being easy or free?? My parents did not help me pay for my education. I owe that money to the government (another conversation altogether).

I will say that I was extremely fortunate to have parents with the drive. I know many children do not. That is precisely why education aid/support is needed in these areas for the young. Many problems will be fixed in this country when more of us refuse to lay down and give up based on our circumstances. Had my father or mother (who holds a doctorate degree now) made decisions based only on their circumstances I would not be where I am today. Wow Cambridge!! Oxford!! Awesome!!!

My first job in the mining industry was in Wise Virginia in 1977. Coming from the Midwest it was a real shock. I could not believe how many of people worked the system. Most of the car wrecks were intentional, self inflicted injuries were common and no interest in trying to improve there lot in life. Most just wanted their government check in the mail without a day labor to justify it. At the company I worked for we our HR dept was continually hiring people to replace no shows, drunks and totally incompetent workers.

The percentage of Americans that do not have health care is less than 8 percent; the unemployment rate is 5.5 percent so the biggest majorities without health care are unemployed hhhhhuuuuuuummmmm! Universal health care is not the answer the government screws everything up and does not to be in charge of this portion of society. I do believe that insurance companies are crooks and something needs to be done to straighten them out. Obviously if you have a college education and you are barely making ends meat then look for another job with better benefits, or here is a better one quit living outside your means. There is a thing as finical responsibility and a lot of Americans do not have it. If you don???t have a college education go back to school for a trade or something there are all kinds of grants and aid available for people to better themselves. I have a degree in criminal justice but went to school and got my CDL, I now drive a truck and work my butt off and my wife works as a receptionist we don???t make a lot of money, but my job has pretty good benefits. I could be a cop anywhere, but I choose not to because the pay well sucks and most of the benefits that the states and city???s offer are well crap. I don???t mind clinics helping people like this not one bit. My wife and I have money we set aside in our budget that we give to charity its is just the right thing to do, but this article is blowing smoke up everybody butt like we need universal health care because there all these people without and that is simply not true. The biggest problem in this country is that people everywhere think they have to have the biggest and nicest house and cars and are not living within their means finically. I don???t like to belittle anyone and I am all for living the American dream, I own my home my car???s are paid for and I am trying to get my house paid off as soon as I can. I would have loved to been able to of bought a bigger house and stuff but I like having money left over to go do things; and for that emergency that is just waiting right around the corner. I use to struggle and couldn???t ever seem to get ahead then I got turned onto Dave Ramesy. His plan sure helped me I recommend it to all people. Go to your local library and get the books it really puts things into perspective. I don???t know everyone???s situation and can???t judge but there is always something better out there and always better ways to do things we just have to look and find it???s the great thing about living in America and living in a free society.

I don;t know where you got your numbers from but they are pathetically low. Try 45%+ for people without health coverage, most of them are EMPLOYED. You unemployment % of 5.5% is also a joke. Try 12%-15% if you factor in the people the government excludes from their figures, mainly people whose benefits have run out and those who are underemployed. Thanks though I needed a laugh after reading this sad article!

I'm a middle class person with my own company and I pay over 10,000 a year for health care for me and my children. If I were to get sick then there would be no more health care for anyone in my family because I'm the only one making money to pay for it. The middle class is getting the shaft, but don't blame poor people. Lets put blame where it belongs. The health care industry pays millions of dollars to your congressmen and senators to keep things exactly the way they are today. The American Medical Association limits the number of qualified applicants who can get into medical school in order to keep the salaries of doctors as high as possible. They want you to blame poor people, that is the simple divide and conquer theory. There should be free healthcare for all Americans, just like there is free healthcare for all Canadians, Cubans, Englishmen, French, German, Chinese and nearly every other industrialized country on earth. The American middle class is being duped by our corporate sponsored media, corporate sponsored healthcare and our corporate sponsored politicians. We need to get rid of the insurance companies and have public healthcare in America. Someplace where a doctor will ask "What's wrong with you?" instead of "Where is your insurance card?". Who do you think is getting rich? The insurance companies. Any YOU, the middle class, the people reading this article, are paying for it.

    • Posted By: keepasmile1003 @ 08/05/2008 2:00:46 PM

Finally! Someone gets it!! Thank you for your comments. Middle class America is being duped and we were being told a terrible lie as we recieved our degrees, built our small businesses, and bought our homes. Nonetheless, I am very proud of my Masters Degree which allows me to teach (a job I adore), and the small family owned pub where I bartend to make ends meet, and my modest home with an outrageous mortgage. Without the middle class, there would be no America. We are the ones who service our citizens and should not have to fear imminent foreclosure or a cancellation of health benefits. The country who promised "The American Dream" has changed its agenda to benefit the elite few or the unfortunate in poverty. I believe none of us should be ignored, but the large majority of the middle class has been left to fend for themselves.

It is shocking to hear that something as preventable as tooth decay is creating so many problems. Why not spend some of those charity dollars to implement a school program mandating that all students brush their teeth properly at the beginning and end of the school day, using flourinated toothpaste? Perhaps good dental habits would stay with the children as they grow into adulthood and staunch this dental plight.

    • Posted By: curryjm @ 08/05/2008 3:04:10 PM

Unfortunately, I don't think just brushing teeth is the problem here. What drives dental decay, more than poor hygiene, is poor diet. Of course, regular dental care from a dentist helps, too. There are alot of factors involved; it is not as simple as using a toothbrush.

I hope you never find yourself in a situation where your insurance caps out or you lose your jobs and can't get another. Thankfully I am not in that situation but I am constantly aware of how anyone's circumstances can change in the blink of an eye. If you are not ashamed of what you said you sure as heck should be.

Of course, the press jumps on the fact the people will gravitate to getting something for free. No kidding. Looks like one of the fellows in the picture has quite a few tattoos. I guess he cannot afford an occasional visit to the dentist but he can afford his tats. It's a matter of priority, my friends, for many...not a national disgrace or emegency.

Free health care? Don't be so naive. I was brought up on hard work. Here is some background info:

My family came over from Vietnam, my grandfather and grandmother had 7 children, only my grandfather could speak English. We all worked hard to provide for one another, we did not spend frivolously!! Ask yourself what makes America so great? America is the best nation in the world because you can work hard to achieve what you want. Hard work begins when you are a child. You work hard to get good grades and then you go to college and continue to work hard. Your hard work pays off when you find a job and your job provides health care.

My father didn't go to college. He was a postal carrier, but guess what, he worked hard. He got promoted to supervisor, then to assistant manager. He continued to work hard and now is the postmaster of a large city (one step under executive with the USPS). This woman with rotting teeth has put herself in that position. She has made mistakes in life and has not kept her future in mind. Now she looks toward the government for answers. Well guess what, you should solve your own problems (AND YOU CAN) and that is what makes this government so great.

I agree her area may be difficult to find work. But talk to an immigrant that came to this country with nothing but a birth certificate. I grew up in poverty eating only rice for dinner but guess what, I worked hard my whole life. My hard work has paid off, and soon I might be paying extra in taxes to pay for those who haven't worked as hard.

I love America for allowing me to work hard to achieve what I have today.

I would love for America to be like those other countries. It would take soo much stress off me. I could enjoyo life and not have to live in pain.

I was diagnosed with "pre-existing condition" of Degenerative Disc Disease and bone spurs and arthritis is causing me severe head, neck and back pain. Although never having a diagnosis of or ANY problems of any kind in of this nature or any pain reletive to anything in these areas... The odd part of all of this is that these symptoms of "pre-existing conditions" didn't surface until AFTER I was struck by an 80,000 pound Peterbuilt tractor-trailer that was traveling through a clearly marked construction zone in broad daylight at a rate of 65+ mph and leaving the road and striking my disabled pickup truck that was parked some 20 away from the highway and inside of the well-marked construction zone... I broke down at 1:00 AM and returned to the truck @ 2:00 PM to rest and wait for my tow truck team that was coming to get me. I was sleeping on the seat in the pickup when the truck left the highway, striking me in the left rear of the cab of my pickup @ 6" from where my head was laying. There were no pre-impact skid marks from the tractor-trailer, the driver was on a cell phone yacking to someone, probably bragging of how "professional" he was with only 6 months over the road experience and tried to tell the Highway Patrol that the wreck was MY fault. THAT was June 17th, 2003 and I have had to let go of 3 lawyers and now considering suing 2 doctors for mis-diagnosing my damage. I have not been to court on this issue yet because everyone want's to white-wash the fact that I was struck by a tractor trailer and survived. Welcome to America! Socialized Medicine is Government Medicine, ever hear the horror stories of Vererans Hospitals, Public Schools are Goverment Schools. The only reason these Doctors and Dentist can volunteer is because we are NOT Government Medicine. Some of you need to do more reading from Doctors in Germany and the UK on how they are leaving the Medical Profression due to their inablity to help people because they work for the Government. I dont care how much people spend on luxury cars or if they spend Ten Million on a wedding. You forget to ask an important question...how much do they give to charity? How many times do the wealthy help out people and we dont know about it. We dont need to know. We have become a complaining world. Too busy whinning instead of doing something to solve our own problems. Our solution is to look to the government to solve our problems, you have got to be kidding me...What you better be worried about is those Rich People deciding not to give to charity because the government could never Replace what they do. Next thing will be that I am going to the Government Grocery Store! Be careful for what you wish for, you just might get it.

Man you are exactly the problem with this country. You call something Socilism and think you have won the argument and you have ...with yourself. How about instad of being so ideological about it, look at what works. Granted some things are best done by private companies and systems but alot of good things are done by government. So called privatization is responsible for the record deficits of the Bush Administration. Conservative ideology has led to crony capitalism and corruption on a massive scale. Wake up! Bush and his ideological compatriots have left us with a mess. Let's be pragmatic for a change. It wouldn't be bad to try some of the things that seem to be working so well in Europe, but they are socialist ...right. Please give me some Euros.

I do not live in Utopia, had five bypasses and could write a book like most who have been sick. Since when does the U.S. Government owe any of us anything, next thing we will want them to give us a free house, car, fuel, food. I pay for Government Schools with my taxes and I dont use them.I want a refund. Remember that countries that have Public Healthcare always had it that way. We dont even have a uniform voting system that works and people want a Uniform Medical Program. What does President Bush have to do with any of this? This goes back many decades. As far as Hillary's Health Plan, it ruined the State of Tennessee!

  • Posted By: randel101 @ 08/05/2008 2:56:42 PM

There is an added cost that no one wants to talk about. That is those people out there that work the system. We all know some of those types but we turn a blind eye and do nothing. I'm talking about those people that can work but don't and then latch onto every "gimme" program available. The minimum wage laws are partly responsible because with all the wealfare and give away programs out there it makes some elements of society realize that they can live better with much less effort by using the give aways and wealfare system than by taking a minimum wage job. This in reality makes the minimum wage level the difference in the two. I remind you I just said some people and I think we could place more emphasis in assuring that this abuse does not occur. There is nothing wrong with charity as long as charity is deserved but I think all of the working people of this country are getting tired of helping those that seem unwilling to help themselves.

America and AmericaNS, you ought to be ashamed of yourself! I cannot explain myself why the so called "greatest nation in the world" does NOT take care of its people. Plain and pure DISGUSTING. Get your heads out of your asses and begin to take care of yourself and quit whining every time taxes are increased...the tax increase helps you live longer. Look at model nations in Europe and in your OWN backyard to learn. But then again, you're all too proud to learn from others, while and families continue to suffer without healthcare--totally absurd and SHAMEFUL! USA get your act together. All the media attention and money you give to celebrities could be used towards building health care.

    • Posted By: 20something @ 08/05/2008 2:55:35 PM

Get rid of the celebrities, that I agree with. But calling the European countries model nations... before you call them that look at all of their problems. I'll take our problems over those, thank you very much.

      • Posted By: bookworm in Iowa @ 08/05/2008 2:45:06 PM

Papo, since you cann't figure our why our system is this way, I will explain it to you. It's not rocket science. The old people in this country vote. They vote vote vote. Therefor, the majority of the bennies (entitlement programs like Medicare, Social Security, Government Retirement, and Military retirement, go to them. The Medicare system in this country dictates everything that doctors and hospitals do. The beurocracy (due to government intervention because of Medicare) is unbelievable.

That's why things are the way they are here in the US. Period.

We are behind in health care. We definitely do not have a Cadillac but a lower Chevy Cobalt when it comes to health care. Canada, France, England and many others all have tax paid health care which surpasses ours. You do not have to wait to be treated for life and death situations at these countries like some people would have you think. And at the very least, you won't be turned away because you can't line the pockets of the greedy health insurance companies. It's a shame when you get turned away in this country for things like cancer. What a pathetic little country we have become.

    • Posted By: Velo Route @ 08/05/2008 2:52:31 PM

France, and many others all have tax paid health care which surpasses ours.
The French are paying into the system with a percentage on their wages in the same manner we pay into our social security retirement.. Your comments sounds it is free paid through their income tax ..Only partially true (because the system currently is in the red)!

    • Posted By: TruthandConsequence @ 08/05/2008 1:25:06 PM

U.S. medicine is the Cadillac of all medicine, it is just that not all Americans have equal access to the best medicine. Since ancient times, the wealthy have always had better access because medicine and doctors cost money. In Canada, the wealthy know not to depend on national health, they carry U.S. insurance and have their most complex and time needy medicine done in the U.S.

      • Posted By: pst.julien @ 08/05/2008 1:58:55 PM

If we have the Cadillac of all medicine, why do we have one of the highest mortality rates of all industrialized nations? What good is a Cadillac if you can't afford to drive it?

      • Posted By: BethA @ 08/05/2008 1:27:48 PM

I'm saying if you can fight a war in Iraq that never caught the people who caused 9/11, then you can bloody well afford health care and get a clue, our infrastructure is crumbling under Republican rule, bridges fall down, the housing industry tanked, health care is disgusting, medicare that I paid for got spent on God knows what but it isn't there for me etc....Does that mean raise taxes, how on earth do you think you are going to survive when the baby boomers hit and the Republicans spent all our money? It's simple, cut spending on war or raise taxes. Your choice, ya don't get to sit back and pretend it's not going to impact you, it impacts all of us and if you aren't part of fixing it then you are a part of the continued wrecking of this great country!

How hard is it to brush your teeth twice a day and avoid the complications of poor dental hygene?

    • Posted By: K.I.S.S. METHOD @ 08/05/2008 2:52:15 PM

Ignorance is indeed bliss. Not only do these people need to be educated on proper dental hygene but there is widespread oral diseases spread throughout the region as a result of years of neglect. Brushing their teeth twice a day may help but it certainly won't cure. Brushing their teeth may be easier for them though, than showing compassion, care, and concern is for the heartless posters I have read on here blaming the people so poor that they cannot afford dental care or doctors visits that they must wait a year between visits from kind souls (even then they may be sent home without help) for not taking better care of themselves. Yup, some people are "enjoing the bliss".

It's a sad indictment of the last 7 years of an administration that won elections in part based on its "family values" platform. Instead of scaring us with immigration, gay marriage, abortion issues and other divisive issues, wouldn't a better family value be one that takes care of families? This country cares little about its poor, its elderly, its infirm and sick. The folks that run the free clinics are my heroes. May god bless them and theirs.
