Before we go down the path of a National Health Insurance, we need to take care of closing the immigration gaps that exist.....County emergency rooms across the nation are filled with people that should not be getting healthcare from this country.....we could handle the indigents of our nation if they were the only ones we needed to look out for.......schools, healthcare, government are all a mess because of our inability to look out after our own ...I am not trying to be mean spirited or cold....it is just common sense.....everyone wants something for nothing.....the bills need to be paid somehow...if not individually, then via taxes, surcharges and other government fees...wake up, people.....

How sad the America has come to this... and before long YOU will be there too. BEcause America has made it clear it favors business over its people.

"People" Have never given me a job with benefits, but businesses have....

      • Posted By: summer4077 @ 08/05/2008 1:40:30 PM

See, that's the point entirely. Businesses should not have ANYTHING to do with health care, that makes no sense. You shouldn't be entitled to better health simply because of where you work. The government regulates entertainment, roads, cars, food--but not health care? The most essential, vital thing to a country is its people!

    • Posted By: TruthandConsequence @ 08/05/2008 1:15:59 PM

America's wealth derives from earning money, not from giving it away - although we have given away plenty over the years. Business is not the enemy, it is the life blood that feeds all Americans. America needs to protect business even more than it needs to protect our access to health care, but I am not saying access to health care is not important. Perhaps it is a matter of balance.

All they have to do is go to prison and they get this free. Something is wrong when hard working Americans can't get health and dental care but those that do the least get it free.

This is yet another condition that supports going to socialized medicine. Health care costs are out of control and insurance companies fight payment of most claims, even when they're supposed to pay. There are several very successful programs in other countries that our government could analyze and model a productive program for America. The only thing stopping it is big lobbyists. I encourage everyone to bombard their congressmen with emails, phone calls or letters to get their attention away from the big paying lobbyists.

This article firmly puts the issue on Dental and Vision care more than health care. From insurance coverage standpoints, these are entirely different from medical care. There are no emergency rooms to go to for dental and vision needs. There are people with good medical insurance coverage who do not have the necessary dollars to do what is needed for their dental and vision needs.

    • Posted By: centralohio29 @ 08/05/2008 1:36:19 PM

I agree, because I work full-time, have a college degree. My company provides good medical insurance but vision and dental is a reimbursement type of deal. So, I'm saving up to go to the dentist and it's still going to take my job 4-8 weeks to reimburse me after I send in all of the paperwork that I have to get from a dentist. For those that might say get another job, go back to school. First off, in my area jobs are scarce and no thanks to more student loans, b/c I don't qualify for grants.

America desperately needs some type of health care for everybody. Call it National Health Care or whatever, we need it bad. The Insurance companies are bleeding us dry and all the politicians are worried about is how much money they can steal before they get out of office. Lets get rid of the whole rotten bunch and get some good ole boys in there with some common sense and some compassion for AMERICANS.

  • Posted By: coloradosky @ 08/05/2008 1:26:30 PM

We need to pressure our national government to grow a backbone and take control of escalating COSTS of healthcare. Yes, health insurance carriers are a part of the problem but they're not the ONLY part. We could go to a rationed healthcare system, i.e. single-payer, "universal" but even the amount raised in extra taxes will only go so far. It won't be enough to treat everyone for everything, esp if they are allowed to treat our government funded "pool" of money like a community candy bowl.

    • Posted By: BethA @ 08/05/2008 1:34:08 PM

I agree it needs to be regulated. As other countries do well. Either way right now all of us taxpayers are paying for it anyway. Your premiums are higher, your taxes are higher already to take care of those who can't get care while it's treatable, curable. Instead they show up on your tax dollars when they are so ill, so far down that they wind up in the emergency rooms, or in the streets. No you all can either decide it's ok to let the streets fill up and pretend you aren't contaminated by that, or you can all step up and realize that the rest of the modern world is more civilized than we are when it comes to such basics as health care. Does that mean I want to support Viagra as part of any system, not on your life. It needs regulation. If other countries can do this at lesser costs, why can't we?

  • Posted By: BethA @ 08/05/2008 1:08:50 PM

FatJoey, I don't want free health, I want the insurance I paid for to not have dumped me the minute I came down with cancer. I would love to go to Cuba for health care, but our country won't let me. I worked my entire life, paid probably lot more taxes than you did. What we are asking for is either regulate the insurance industry and force them in to not dumping sick patients, regulate the health care systems to not overcharge and if you aren't willing to do that, yes there will be a revolt against the Republican small government but we got money for war mentality. There are terrorists right at home that people are ignoring, that's the sick and dying.

    • Posted By: summer4077 @ 08/05/2008 1:33:22 PM

I'm truly sorry that you had to go through that, Beth. It's a disgrace that one of the wealthiest and most powerful countries in the world can't take care of their own. Canada, France, England--they've all done it for years! I find it astounding that the government will investigate and stop credit card companies from raising APRs without notice on credit cards, yet they won't investigate insurance companies refusing coverage of certain diseases and/or flat out dumping patients that have paid into the company for years.

Our family would be considered middle or upper middle class. For the past 5 years our gross income has fluctuated between 110,000.00 and $115,000.00. After state, and federal taxes we have been able to keep approximately $55,000.00. That is slightly over $1,000.00 per week. I called the IRS twice and asked them HOW on earth we should have to pay so much, actually REQUESTING an audit! They blow us off saying that is how much we should pay.

Recently 2 men running for office in our state, had their incomes and taxes printed in the paper. BOTH of these guys made almost exactly what we made, YET THEY BOTH PAID FAR LESS! I assume somehow they have some write-off's that we're too stupid to come up with!

Back to the subject. We have always had medical care "provided" by our employer (one works). BUT, that amount costs us approximately $7,000.00 per year out of our gross (which makes that non deductable)! This includes vision and dental care. The out of pocket for say routine xrays and cleaning is/was zero, but as an example a root canal cost us approximately $400.00 WITH INSURANCE, and a crown cost another approximately $400.00 out of pocket.

My pointis this: Our gross income APPEARS fabulous (middle class) but our true NET PAY is just a bit over a thousand a week. One tooth that needed a root canal and crown would cost us approxinately $800.00 out of pocket with insurance.

That is alot of money for us, so I can imagine people with NO INSURANCE trying to take care of their teeth. Just thought I would share this if anyone cares.

By the way, our income is gennerated through managment of heavy highway construction projects(freeways/roads/bridges) throughout the western United States. The type of work is considered "ignorant" by most Americans and though no formal education was acquired, the knowledge is acquired through years and years of work.

Bottom line, I susupect MANY Americans are going without medical, dental and vision because if they do not have insurance, there is no way they can afford to get care. We can barely afford care, and look at that gross!

I deeply resent people who are living their lives generationally living on welfare, getting all their care handed to them for free! (medical dental vision) while the rest of us work our ever loving a double sses of paying half our income to support free loaders.

On the other hand, those who work, and cannot afford care need to get it. America is handing free loaders everything (illegal immigrants, those on welfare, etc.) while those who work can't afford basic dental or medical care if they have no insurance.

    Ahhh!!!

Your federal tax rate at $115K should be $21,597.50. If you are married filing jointly your base tax is $8,772.50 and then you pay 25% of the amount of your income greater than $63,700. I can't imagine how your state and local taxes are as much as your federal taxes. Where do you live? I'd consult a tax attorney or an account to take a look at what you are paying. These numbers don't take into acount any deductions you can take.

      • Posted By: cajademierda @ 08/05/2008 1:32:22 PM

They are probably counting SS and medicare taxes, plus the self employment portion of both of those. Plus the state income tax. They are paying alot of taxes, but unfortunately it seems like the correct amount. The total marginal tax rate for a six figure income is over 40%.

There is no such thing as 'free' health care. its a fallacy (sp?) Someone has to pay for it. Trillions of dollars worth, in fact. And who will we intrust with this Trillion dollar socialist program? Why the Gov't of course...the same Gov't that destroyed medicare and Social Security

    • Posted By: summer4077 @ 08/05/2008 1:28:48 PM

Gee...wow...wonder where we could find trillions of dollars? Hmm...maybe the Iraq and Afghanistan 'wars'???

    • Posted By: BethA @ 08/05/2008 1:20:26 PM

There is such a thing as regulated health care, that is how the rest of the modern world spends less money that we Americans do and manages to provide basic health care for all it's citizens. Don't bury your head in the sand, it's being done well everywhere but in America. I've seen it myself, what the insurance companies have their government puppets sell you is exactly the lie you speak, that its some socialist program. Please wake up like the rest of us have done. I had to find out the hard way after having cancer strike me and I believed I'd paid 35 years for healthcare I was then denied. This will happen to you to, wake up now and realize the rest of the modern world does what we can not , they do it better and cheaper.

REQUIRE ALL NEW DOCTORS TO WORK PRO BONO 3 YEARS BEFORE THEY CAN GET A LICENCE!!!SORT OF LIKE MISSIONARY WORK, THEN YOU CAN HAVE FREE HEALTH!!

    • Posted By: Tired of Politics @ 08/05/2008 1:28:19 PM

Require all banks/lending facilities to wait 10 years before collecting on student loans. Doctors have to pay their bills too.

    • Posted By: BethA @ 08/05/2008 1:24:25 PM

And how do you expect the doctors to pay for the education they sacrificed to get? No pay the doctors, the nurses, the ones who took out loans to take care of people like you and I. STOP paying the insurance companies who provide nothing to either the doctor or the patient. That is clearly where the problems are. But I have a feeling from your comments that you are either part of the insurance agency or someone who doesn't seek the truth. As I said, when it happens to you...good luck with your convictions keeping you alive. Cause what you think you have earned you will find...you have no rights to thanks to your unwillingness to see the country needs fixing, not scare tactics based in the same lies the WMDs came from.

If you had a well-advertised give-away of food in that area there would have been long lines of people showing up to get the free food. Does this mean the people there don't get food?

    • Posted By: summer4077 @ 08/05/2008 1:26:14 PM

Uh yeah, actually, that's exactly what it means. In poverty stricken areas, there is a great need for both food pantries AND medical care. I'm not sure I understand your point...

  • Posted By: Sickofthewhining @ 08/05/2008 11:23:59 AM

This article is indicative of nothing more than the reality of a segment of our population who will continue to reproduce with abandon and believe our government is supposed to care for them from cradle to grave. What Newsweek didn't ask or answer of Ms. Fowler is whether she has enough money for cigarettes and booze, why she can't afford a toothbrush and toothpaste and why she is caring for her grandchildren. It's called personal responsibility. Of course, liberals don't believe in that. They prefer to lump together those who truly can't take of themselves-of which there are many-and those who simply make one bad decision after another and expect others to bail them out.

    • Posted By: rdaffron @ 08/05/2008 1:24:30 PM

I would suggest that YOU have no idea what you're talking about. You see, I'm originally from the part of SW Virginia that this article is about. In fact, I'm originally Buchanan County, whose county seat is Grundy, Virginia. 30 years ago, BC had 30K+ residents. Today, over 1/3 of the population has left. All because there are NO JOBS. This article is about the sadness of the uneducated and the lack of adequate health care in the area. When most of the kids graduate and some go on to college, those who opt to go off to school do NOT return. The only industry is the dwindling coal production. Yes, there's a law school (for the educated) and now a phamacy school (again, for the educated). But most up in the hollows live barely at the poverty level. You have NO understanding of the culture nor of the geography of SW Virginia, Sickofthewhining. I do. I was born and raised there. Granted, I left in 1978, simply because there is nothing for a woman with a college education to do.

BTW, the vast majority of doctors in the area are foreign born, not home grown. Why? Because homegrown won't stay or come back. I went to school with kids who were on welfare, black lung, or less. This is part of the heart of Applachia. Until you understand that education is the key to EVERYTHING, you will only show your ignorance in your words.

  • Posted By: coloradosky @ 08/05/2008 1:22:56 PM

Until our Federal politicians grow a backbone and stop accepting "donations" from lobbyists of the medical industry, we will never have common-sense healthcare reform. They are blatantly ignoring the fact that the main driving factor to healthcare affordability is the COST of healthcare services. Yes, insurance carriers are part of the problem but they're ONLY part of the problem. Until the actual cost of services is arrested, more people are going to go uninsured. "Universal healthcare" is access for all BUT paying higher texases doesn't mean you'll ever see this rationed healthcare.

The situation is not much better for the middle class. I had an accident and shattered my ankle and leg in 6 places. 2 surgeries and at least 15 visits to the orthopedic surgeon later I was hit with $5000 out of pocket expenses. What is most insane, I have TWO major medical plans. I pity this country when the baby boomers hit their late 60's.

how can we consider ourselves so superior, when we can't afford to take care of our people. we can afford to give oil companies tax incentives but can't give human beings proper health care. we have a long way to go before we will be a truly civilized nation.

You know something is wrong when someone like Bill Gates, still in his fifties, needs to retire and devote full time to giving away a fortune he made through his monopoly called Microsoft. He made most of it here and yet is sending most of it over there? I guess that is the American way now. Shooting ourselves in the foot.

    • Posted By: reader9999 @ 08/05/2008 1:18:41 PM

Well, you know you are right that something is wrong. Bill Gates made most of his money illegally by forcing computer manufacturers to use Windows or else Microsoft wouldn't sell them Windows. There wasn't much of an alternative when Microsoft first started doing this but this allowed Microsoft to get Windows in millions, the majority, of computers. They did this for many years. Then the federal government brought anit-trust suits against them because it was indeed illegal. Now, Microsoft is seeing it's business dwindle because of other operating systems such as Linux. The only reason they have so much money in the bank is because of their illegal practices that caused hundreds of software companies to fail resulting in no competitiion to speak of. Now, they are stuck trying to figure out how to make money the honest way as new software firms build better products than they ever dreamed of writing. Your statement, "I guess that is the American way now" is true. We are shooting ourselves in the foot.

Though Dental care is part of Total Health care, almost all insurance carriers require separate insurance. Even Medicare does nor include dental care in its program. Being a physician myself, I have failed to understand this.
