When are we going to tell the extremely intelligent people searching for signs of water on Mars that they're going to have to turn their attention to creating engines that run on something other than gas before we fund more of those kinds of things?

    • Posted By: darkharp @ 08/08/2008 1:25:38 AM

The extremely intelligent people have made a number of alternative suggestions for power production, achievable and useful suggestions, that have been widely ignored or unfunded. This is largely due to the somewhat less intelligent or insightful politicians considering their reelection strategies and special interests rather than long term common benefit combined with an electorate that can't seem to hold their representatives accountable or who simply don't care to pay attention.

Having observed this, and plotted the inevitable trend data...logically its time to consider relocation...so the question of whether there is water on Mars becomes really rather important. Changing the course of human behavior is far more difficult than conquering the technical challenges involved with living on a different planet, and the fact is, if we don't collectively change our behavior, we are in deep trouble.

In the meantime, I have been converting to solar power for home use and for fueling appliances, computers, cell phones, and so on. It isn't all that hard, nor does it have to be super expensive. If we all did more of it, the cost would come down even further.

I have refused to drive the car unless absolutely necessary to conserve gas, and have made arrangements to telecommute as much as possible. If we all did that, there would be an enormous reduction in usage, leaving aside those who absolutely must be on site for work reasons.

Hybrid cars and electric cars are become available and are good options as well. Eventually I could see myself runnign an electric car and recharging it off of solar panels.

We would still consume petroleum in some forms, plastics, manufacturing and so on; but we would drastically reduce what we are using.

We also need to look at how commodities are being traded and our economic system for marketing them. A great deal of what we are seeing is not accounted for properly by the availability of oil, but is more likely due to speculation, people who buy and sell just to take a small slice of the cost as profit when handing it on to the next buyer.

I've no objection to people making a decent profit, but if its only a paper transaction and you did no work to help that product come to market I feel you should not be allowed to profit from the deal. Doing this just drives prices up.

If we're gonna try everything, then we had better get started. Maybe we'll have ONE thing befor the oil runs dry. We can start with supporting all the many things already being worked on here in our own country. It's kinda hard though the gov. stepping on our necks, after all, they are all OIL men!!!!

    • Posted By: hellabob @ 08/08/2008 1:19:31 AM

by your logic every leader in every country is an OIL Man and therefore are stopping EMF, free energy , the electric car and every other ficticious alternative plan out there. it must be a mass conspericy by every
government in the world, to not allow a BETTER alternative to fossel fuels. Any alternative will be much more expensive and complicated and the country that stupidly adopts it first will not be able to compete
economicaly with other contries. This GLOBAL WARMING FALLICY will cause the US to become bankrupt
if we allow politicans to lead us down a road other countries will not follow. Wake up and think about
ECONOMICS. show Me the Semi truck that runs on electricity and can make drops to the local grocery
store, how do you think all our goods and services are distributed ?

  • Posted By: Dayve63 @ 08/08/2008 1:02:49 AM

The key is we must do something now. Our Congressional leaders have failed us because they apparently don't see the urgency of the situation. Regardless of the direction we choose (preferably drilling everywhere to include ANWR; nuclear power; wind, solar, geothermal, water, electric cars, CNG vehicles, clean coal technology, garbage to fuel and other alternatives). We need to fast track all plans to stop the flow of wealth from our country to the rest of the world (many who wish our way of life to end). Tax incentives should be used to promote this and to create more jobs. We need to invest in America not give money to people to pay their elctric bill (Obama trying to buy votes) . I guess if you believe that, we are a country of shallow thinkers. This one issue could bring our country to its needs without one terrorist act or military action in less than ten years if our leaders fail to act meaningfully in the next 90 days.

    • Posted By: DAT A BOY @ 08/08/2008 1:19:02 AM

90 days?? Any one person in congress can't manage to get his butt wiped in 90 days. ( sorry to be so crude) We're all talking about all this and we're all pretty much thinking alike. We're seeing the problems and having viable solutions, but it's akin to stopping a freight train just by yelling at it. The people that are running our great country are just not doing the job that we are paying them a lot of money to do. Fire them?, Need a quicker way than voting them out. Our apathy for so long has gotten us to the point of seeming helplessness. It's almost like we need some kind of revolt to get something done. ( we did that once and it got us a brand new country). At least then we were all on the same page.

It to bad Paris is to young to be president, I agree with he on this.. If she needs a running mate, I am old enough to take the job a president, she can be my vice-president. She has it right on this issue, not just one thing is going to break or dependence on oil...... It is time America stand ups to the world.... And create jobs, conserves energy, and becomes the a world leader again... We have all we need to do this in our own country... Wind, nuclear, coal, oil, bio-fuels, etc... And also the work force ( people ) to make this work.... Time to quit sending job and money overseas... It is time to take care of US(us) first...

Why don't we use a couple years budgets on what we spend in Iraq to build high speed magnetic powered bullet trains like they have in Japan? Start building in multiple cities at the same time and we build till you meet up with another crew. That way you create a bunch of jobs and put all that money back into our economy where it belongs. The airline industry will hurt but it will also help cut back on the need for oil.

    • Posted By: Anna2007 @ 08/08/2008 12:47:37 AM

to mbutler80: Your comments are excellent ideas. People have been saying what you are saying for the last 15 years. CREATING JOBS FOR AMERICANS IS EXCELLENT AND IT'S ABOUT TIME SOMEONE DID SOMETHING TO STOP GREAT PEOPLE BEING LAID OFF. We need to take back the BILLIONS OF DOLLARS that have been stolen from the American people through job losses to China, Mexico, etc. and stop the nonsensical LAW SUITS that WE are paying for because of ineptness in our MILITARY BRASS, and our CONGRESS, specifically the $5.8 we paid to Mr. Hatfield because he was wrongly targeted by the F.B.I. as a suspect in the anthrax case. That is only the CURRENT waste of taxpayers' dollars due to arrogant military plans (the research of biological weapons which we use on ourselves) and the resulting insults we dis onto legitimate scientists and citizens. I think Mr. Hatfield deserves $10 million and it should come out of the Military's pockete and out of our Congressmen's paychecks. The average Joe-Blow American can see the truth; why can't our Congress?

      • Posted By: DAT A BOY @ 08/08/2008 12:55:39 AM

Sorry Anna2007--it's my fault. I said in my reply that politics and morons don't mix. I was wrong. Congress/politics and morons---one and the same. So, I stand corrected---they do mix.

        • Posted By: Anna2007 @ 08/08/2008 1:10:16 AM

to DAT A BOY -- Thanks for the correction.... good point.

    • Posted By: DAT A BOY @ 08/08/2008 12:35:03 AM

mbutler80---They've been trying to get that done between l.a. and vegas for the last twenty-five years and it hasn't happened yet and probably won't. Every time they do a feasability study---it's to expensive to build. Like it's gonna get cheaper over time. Politics and morons don't mix.

Why is it that when Hillary Clinton suggested we release some of the oil from the strategic reserves Obama accused her of pandering to get more votes but when he suggests it, it's suddenly a wonderful idea? This is just the latest flip flop from Obama and I am getting worried!

    • Posted By: hellabob @ 08/08/2008 1:08:48 AM

why does nancy pelosi want to release oil that is intended only for military emergencies but votes down
oil shale which has trillions of barrels of oil ? I am begenning to think she has lots of investments in oil futures (commodities)
Deposits of oil shale are located around the world, including major deposits in the United States of America. Global deposits are estimated as equivalent to 2.8 trillion to 3.3 trillion barrels (450×109 to 520×109 m3) of recoverable oil.[2][3][4][5]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oil_shale so why cant we explore this , and also the thousands of jobs it will create ?
oh thats why , because the democrats killed it .

We wouldn't need any oil if the evil patent office would patent back EMF generators instead of banning them in favor of big oit!! Look at Newman! Look at Hines! Look at Bearden! My God, we are ruining the earth to give these greedy bastards money. Americans deserve to suffer, they are so stupid.

Where is Hemp at in the war for energy? Hemp produces 7 times more ethanol than corn does and yeilds higher outputs per acre. 6% of American farmland if farmed for hemp could sufficiantly meet Americas energy needs. Politicans need to look up the facts and not make policies on personal biast's and what they think is going to get them re-elected.

    • Posted By: DAT A BOY @ 08/08/2008 12:23:06 AM

HEMP???!!!! WHAT??/ You want us all to go to jail every time we start our cars? Pay attention to medical pot and see whats happening there. The gov. would hang us with it.

a few tanks in a race. MOST Amaricans burn that in a week NOT a year.......(smiles)

There is so much talk about drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and offshore right now that it's hard to remember how we got ourselves into this mess. Yes, supply is dwindling. Yes, demand is going up. But the dollar's weakness is the biggest reason for gas approaching $5 a gallon. Were the dollar as strong today as it was 10 years ago, $140 would buy us closer to two barrels of oil.

The rest of the world is feeling the pain, too. But we are feeling twice the pain with our weak dollar and gas guzzlers. Low interest rates did not just destroy our housing and banking industry, it destroyed our currency. So instead of drilling offshore and hurting the tourism industry, let's look for long-term solutions.

Were Congress to announce a windfall tax on oil, investment (speculation) would flee from oil. Prices would come back down to reality. Besides, at this point in the bust and boom cycle, one's money would perform better if invested in alternative energy. Exxon is a foolish investment suited for the 20th century. We need to be thinking 21st century.

Instead of treating our sewage and letting it flow into the ocean, we could be turning it into gas using algae. We could also turn every dump into a fuel refinery using garbage. Sure beats turning our food into fuel! It's time to send the market a signal. Congress, Mr. President, we're waiting.

    • Posted By: Allegan2008 @ 08/07/2008 9:17:22 PM

You are right on all points...We have a dam in my town that provided electric for 4500 homes but now it just holds water back to make a alge filled pond. Maybe we could produce gas from the alge and get some electric coming out of the dam if they would put the turbines back in it. America won't elect politicians that do anything until gas hits $7-8/gallon, maybe more.. Both candidates are full of crap and the congress is worse.

I do think a winfall tax and stopping spectulators is bad tho'. Both are part of a thing called free market.. I realize both are bloodsuckers but thats the price we pay for having a thing called open markets. Isn't the stock market just spectulation? and thats where my retirement money is..

      • Posted By: Mimi13 @ 08/07/2008 11:49:39 PM

chikl labor, tainted meat, and snake-oil pharmaceuticals are part of the "free market" also. Would you repeal laws outlawing them? There were a lot of people who said "why doesn't the government DO something" when people were getting Salmonella from produce. Maybe the FDA should have just let people figure out things themselves and take their chances with tomatoes and peppers. How about all those Carl Jr. hambergers -- didn't some people die? Just part of the free market? A fair profit is the right of every business. An obscene profit that substantially reduces the quality of life for a significant part of the population is predatory and should be illegal. Speculators can be regulated by the SEC -- but like most regulatory agencies, it's been asleep at the wheel for the past 8 years.

        • Posted By: expat2000 @ 08/08/2008 12:19:54 AM

Obscene profit? Stop for a second and do a little research. You know that computer you own? That cell phone company you pay ever month? The Tylenol you buy for your headache? The monthly payment on your car? The monthly payment on your credit card? Every single one of those industries makes more money off of you than any oil company. $100 to fill up your car gets the oil company $8 profit. $400 credit card payment could be as much as $72 profit, so which is more obscene?

    • Posted By: expat2000 @ 08/07/2008 9:33:52 PM

Windfall taxes on the oil companies will probably do just the opposite, actually. I know we would like to think that it makes sense, but what is the rational outcome of that proposal? Where does the government spend that money? Does the government spend money wisely? What if the government takes $100 billion dollars from the oil companies and they have to slow down production to reduce costs (hint: lower supply = higher prices)? How much of that $100 billion would then have to be given to foreign oil producers to bring us back to operating levels?

What would make more sense is to ensure the oil companies use the profits they are making to expand US production, which would lower our dependency on the world market. Lower demand from overseas creates downward pressure on prices, and typically, markets follow each other, so if the overseas oil prices go down, so would the domestic oil prices. But then, thats a "perfect world" scenario.

  • Posted By: corndog @ 08/08/2008 12:15:17 AM

We can't loose our dependence on oil it's making the pigs here too much money. Even T Bone Pickens knows were fed up so he has a plan to pick your pockets with electric which is created with fossil fuels. I'm sick of the scam of natural gas and it being the cleaner cheaper fuel. Tell that to people this winter when their bill goes through the roof. Diesel fuel which has always been less than gasoline is now a dollar or more a gallon higher and the truck that brings the gas to the station burns diesel and so does every truck on the highway. Oil went down how come diesel is still high? Cause it's a sick money making game. I say take every ounce of technology we have and all the scientists and enginners in the space program and tell them you have six months to come up with alternative fuel or find another job. I can assure you they can and would. Our goverment is the worst criminals just behind the oil companies. Look at your money, it is owned by the Federal Reserve Bank which is not the government, it's big businesses like oil companies.
