I???m trying to turn the tables on the McCain folks and their stupid tire gauge stunt. I???m having gauges made and selling them on eBay in hopes of raising $2300 for Obama (the max contribution). If you are down, can you please forward this on to other like minded folks. Thanks!

Paris Hilton is an air head! She is incapable of walking and chewing gum at the same time!

    Wow!!
I really enjoyed Paris' ad, of course I realize none of the thoughts she expressed were her own - but none the less the ad made some great points.
It also shows what a great country we live in! In some countries she would be executed for this.
We all need to rise above the bickering that the Dems and Repubs would like to participate in, and demand real plans - obviously neither of them have plans - thats why they attack each other.
Americans need to demand that they send each and every one of us a copy of their resumes and references - as that's what we would have to do to get a job.

sometimes the least likely person has a better view. Paris has been in the limelight wayy too much and unnecessarily exposed to the public in many ways and for DUMB reasons, BUT her perspective is what all Americans need. stop fighting, america can and will go down if we don't unite and confront the real issues.

I'm sure she wouldn't make a better president than either of the clowns running, but she'd make one heck of a first lady...and she's hot!!!

    • Posted By: PenPal93 @ 08/07/2008 9:24:20 PM

Who knows, maybe she's just straight up make a better president than either of these buffoons!

I completely agree with this article. In fact, the first time I saw Paris Hilton's "ad" I thought it was full of great ideas. I definitely agree that on the huge issue of foreign oil dependency both parties MUST work together.

It seems silly to argue with Paris Hilton about energy policy, but offshore drilling cannot serve as an interim solution to the energy crisis until alternate energy sources become available because it will take 7 - 10 years for the drilling to have even the small effect on gasoline price of a few cents that it will eventually have. 7-10 years is too long to serve as an interim solution. On the other hand, T. Boone Picken's natural gas powered cars are a viable interim solution and should be supported as that.

    • Posted By: expat2000 @ 08/07/2008 9:10:34 PM

Let's just apply some real world data to your T. Boone Picken's Theory....
2008 Honda Civic GX automatic (runs on CNG) - $24,590 MSRP 24/36 mpg 8 gallon tank
2008 Honda Civic DX automatic (runs on unleaded) - $15,810 MSRP 25/36 mpg 13.2 gallon tank

Average price for CNG (Dallas, TX) - $2.89/gallon
Average price for regular unleaded (Dallas, TX) - $3.68/gallon

Cost to fill Civic GX - $23.12 Distance to empty - 192(city)/288(hwy)
Cost to fill Civic DX - $48.58 Distance to empty - 330(city)/475(hwy)

Annual fuel cost based on 15,000 miles driven:
      Civic GX - $1,204 - $1,806
      Civic DX - $1,534 - $2,208

So you spend $8,780 up front to save $300-$400 annually (at current prices).... can you please explain how that makes one shred of common sense? Best case scenario, it will take you almost 22 years to recoup the initial investment in gas savings, and lets not forget you will be paying interest on your car financing as well.

And just one other point, what do you think will happen to the price of natural gas if demand suddenly spikes? Please, please, please people, stop and think before jumping on the next bandwagon that comes along.

Only high gas prices are going to drive American automakers to build gas efficient cars! Look at what others have done- the Volkswagon Polo diesel at 73 MPG- 38% better than the Preius and less emissions. We need the auto technology giants to quit whining about MPG regulations and start building mid-size cars that get 35 MPG (not the little death traps we get now). Give $5000 tax breaks for persons buying 35 mpg mid-size cars and 30 mpg 1/2 ton trucks (60% made/assembled in the US) and you will see Americans buy American made cars and the US auto industry grow again. The Bush administration gave big tax breaks to those that bought gas guzzlers (towing over 6000 pounds) to create a fake demand so mothers can take their kids to a baseball game and dad's can drive to work alone in the largest SUV's made in the world. Lets get real and try everything.. Is Paris smarter than either candidate?

We are trying alternative fuel sources...........we have been for decades..............thay are still not as cheep as oil. Nueclear is almost as chhep but.....the environmental folks won't let us build one.............We have oil reserves.........but no ....... they are off our coast lines. 86 million acres are leased to oil co's but they are being sued by environmental groups to keep them from drilling there.....What a JOKE

Wow, I never thought I could ever have respect for Paris Hilton.

But of course politicians can't see the obvious as easily as some of us.

  • Posted By: ButtCrust @ 08/07/2008 8:04:24 PM

Why not try it? We have done absolutely nothing but complain and cruise around in our Town Cars, Hummers and 4 wheel drive trucks while gas prices continue to sky rocket ever higher. We should have been trying alternative fuel sources 30 years ago. The politicians aren't going to do anything because they're too busy fighting each other. They can't agree on anything.

Howard, you're stating the simple obvious truth again. It's your genius. I agree with you entirely with only one exception - biofuels that are made from our food supply. It's great to know that there's someone who can see the WHOLE picture who has a public voice. Why the hell don't you run for office. You could dance circles around those other two clowns. I'm tired of the games and partisanship. It's time for common sense.

Perhaps it's time you got your own TV show. There are too many in the media with their own agenda. PBS is the rare exception. Please keep speaking out about the common sense solutions to these problems we're being saddled with by those who want to serve themselves and don't give a damn about anybody else.

    Fineman for President!

Is Newsweek actually filtering out negative comments about Paris and only allowing positive remarks or something? Maybe an attempt to try to make people think some people actually care about Paris Hilton. Ive seen a bunch of comments removed by myself and others so far.

  • Posted By: geniepiper @ 08/07/2008 7:01:22 PM

Actually what Paris said is what it seems to me Obama has been saying for some time.

  • Posted By: Kboogie @ 08/07/2008 4:15:16 PM

OMG!!!......This must be the beginning of the end.

Is Paris Hilton, actually, getting a "shout-out" from NEWSWEEK?!?!?!?!? On a political blog?!?!?!?!

Head for the hills, folks.......or the video store..........LOL!!!!!!

You know about the aztec calendar right? LOL This article has to cripple Newsweeks credibility in the news world. But on to more important things, We actually agree on something!!!!!!

Sorry, Howard, but while I usually agree with you, your argument here is not correct. You say we need to try EVERYTHING - regardless of the potential negative impacts it may have on the problems we're trying to solve. According to your argument, we should pursue oil sands, even though they are net-negative energy sources and pollute more than coal, because we need it all! Does that mean we should continue pursuing corn ethanol, even though it has caused major spikes in food prices worldwide? Of course we shouldn't. Any amount of our own human or financial capital that is put towards developing inefficient and non-renewable sources of energy is capital that should be put towards sustainable sources. We need to SOLVE the problem, not make it worse, which many of McCain's ideas will do. Regardless of the carbon-free nature of nuclear power, we STILL have no answer for the waste or security problems, and it is simply not cost effective. Wind, solar, geothermal, algae for biofuels, an electric vehicle infrastructure, better public transit, and, most importantly, conservation and efficiency, are what we need to focus ENTIRELY on if we are to become energy independent and sustainable in our lifetimes.
