This is interesting: A good government group is set to ask the Justice Department to open a criminal investigation into the two big McCain stories of recent days -- the bundled contributions from Hess executives, and the bundling by Harry Sargeant, the guy who raised cash for McCain from a host of unlikely donors.

The request, which will be made on Monday by Campaign Money Watch, which first flagged the Hess story to us, raises at least the possibility that such a probe could be initiated during the campaign. Barring that, it could keep the stories going in the press a bit.

David Donnelly of Campaign Money Watch confirms to me that they'll make the formal request on Monday, and also is request for a Federal probe in an email that just went out to supporters. Donnelly says that his group's request is being triggered by McCain's letter to the donors whose contributions had been bundled by Sargeant.

Donnelly said that the letter, which advised the donors of the legal ins-and-outs of such contributions, didn't go far enough in trying to determine what had happened.

"What he didn't say was, 'Tell us who was responsible for giving you money to give to me, and we'll urge the authorities to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law," " Donnelly said. "The letter raises the question, 'Is the McCain campaign covering for his bundlers?"
Asked why Sargeant, whose company holds a huge contract to deliver fuel to military bases in Iraq, merited an investigation, Donnelly said: "An executive from a company that has a billion dollar contract to deliver oil to U.S. bases in Iraq possibly violated election law to funnel contributions to McCain. We think that warrants an investigation."

And on the Hess matter, Donnelly said: "An office manager for an oil company that stands to gain millions in profits from offshore drilling makes donations for the first time this cycle to McCain, and did it at the same time nine other Hess donors do. That's worth an investigation."

"Drill here drill there drill everywhere" McCain said:

Well lets see if your an oil company are you going to contribute to an idiot who is going to tax you into oblivion or a guy who is going to benefit your country and your business? This isn't corruption its self preservation. As a shareholder in Exxon I would hope they do everything in their power to make sure the right guy gets elected I know I am.

Affirmative action is a wonderful thing, a necessary thing, but it's not sufficient," he says. "And it's not just a political issue; it's an academic issue. We can't fulfill our mission without a diverse classroom. How can I teach search and seizure when there's no one who understands what it means to have the police come after you?"

anyone else think this little bit of racism isn't telling of the liberal agenda?

I think what he is saying is we need minorities in the classroom because we need people who have been arrested. What an idiot. Affirmative action opened the door to many people but it has outlived its usefullness. Now we expect Minorities to perform at the same level as everyone else if they want to get into school. The opportunity is absolutely there. Take a look. The liberals think Minorities aren't quite as good as they are so they need to help them. Conservatives believe they are every bit as good and want them to reach their full potential.

I find it funny how they claim George Bush pushed a right wing agenda when he reached out repeatedly but was slapped down. You want an example He asked congress to look into drilling off our shore before he lifted the presidential ban on offshore drilling because he wanted their input. Pelosi wouldn't even let it come to a vote or be discussed.

This article says the deck is so stacked against a republican president. Everyone thought that, but when the DNC picked Obama they made a big mistake. Any other democrat wold have probably been way ahead in the polls but not Obama! Obama has too many past associates like Rev. Wright, Ayers, Rezko, and others that people don't like. TheDNC should have checked him out better before they decided to totally back him.

It's not that Obama is still unknown like this article trys to say, it's that people have heard too much about Obama that they don't like and his inexperience!
How do people see Obama as cool, cerebral ? Wait untill the debates he will loose his cool as he stumbles all over with his answers!

This article also says more democrats will be elected to the house and senate. People should think long and hard before voting in any more democrats, they have been doing everything in their power to keep the economy bad so they can get a democratic president elected! After the elections no mater who wins the economy will get better, gas prices win go down. Life will get better especially if McCain gets elected, at least he has experience to know how to get things done!

A key owner of the National Enquirer, a prominent New York investment banker and one of Hillary Clinton's key backers, Roger Altman, Altman was an official in the first Clinton administration, and his name was mentioned as a possible Clinton Treasury Secretary.

Key owner of National Enquirer mentioned as possible Clinton Treasury Secretary.
Sure glad that didn't happen or we'd all be using money with the heads of aliens on it instead of Presidents.
What a joke the Clinton administration was.

OK Barry. Looks like you are not taking my advice and coming back from vacation. That won't stop me from giving you more advise. Your campaign is in crisis. If you think you can count on your coronation in Denver to turn things around, forget it. Here are the things you need to do.

    1. Stop trying to full people. You are on the political left. Announce it and be proud of it. Look at Reagan. Americans were not anywhere as far to the right as he was and they still voted for him. Why? Because they perceived him as a strong leader secure in his convictions. Don't be afraid to declare that you are on the left. The left has a proud tradition in this country.

    2. Show more passion. Where is you anger? Again, think of Reagan. Do you remember when he became angry over the microphone access. A key moment. Americans, thought "This guy can stand up for himself." No think of Kerry with that cadaver face, his party pooper manner.

    3. Stop sounding like you are giving a lecture at the University of Chicago (also known as the college where fun goes to die). Make your sentences brief. To the point. Use more imagery. Stop hemming and hawing.

    4. Avoid big rallies like the plague. Keep it simple in Denver. People already think you have a big head.

    5. Sept 11 sits between the convention and the election. You have to reassure people that you can protect them. This perhaps will be your biggest challenge. You have to clarify your position on Iraq and convince people that you are willing to do whatever it takes to protect them. Then, get the ACLU to pretend to be angry with you over something. That will have the same effect as Jackson getting angry with you. 6. You should continue to talk about personal responsibility. 7. Clarify your values. 8. Don't put Mrs. Obama out there to tell us who you are. You must do this yourself.

Josemarti - HEY Everyone!! Josemarti is Obama's self-appointed campaign advisor: How to lose!

      hahahahah, you're so funny....

      • Posted By: josemarti @ 08/08/2008 6:52:02 PM

notroubleatall1963: My advise is sound. Certainly a lot better than the advise that he is paying for and mine is free. I think that if he follows my recommendations he has a chance of making it close. Over the next few weeks, I will continue to humbly submit more recommendations. I hope he starts following them before it is too late.

OK smarty pants. What advise do you have for him?

            • Posted By: loriw @ 08/08/2008 8:24:41 PM

Before you give any more ADVICE I would advise you to use a dictionary.

              • Posted By: josemarti @ 08/08/2008 8:34:35 PM

Forgive my speling. English is not my native language. However, I trust that you still get what I am trying to say. My advice to Mr. Obama is humbly and sincerely given.

  • Posted By: josemarti @ 08/08/2008 8:26:08 PM

I understand that Mr. Obama is left handed. Reverend Wright, that great theologian and nenowned neuroscientist, has taught us that whites are left hemisphere dominant and that blacks are right hemisphere dominant. Mr. Obama's left handedness suggest that he may be right hemisphere dominant. Her statement that Obama is "cerebral" fails to explore this issue. Does she mean that he is right hemisphere "cerebral" or left hemisphere "cerebral"?

  • Posted By: thehappyamerican @ 08/08/2008 5:18:05 PM

    Obama is Ouija, not Cerebrial.
He's been to Euprope, you know!

    • Posted By: notroubleatall1963 @ 08/08/2008 6:26:25 PM

You misspelled "cerebral" and what's Europe got to do with it?

Many Americans have been to Europe. I myself lived there during my high school years. You got a problem with foreign travel?

      • Posted By: sharenews @ 08/08/2008 8:16:55 PM

Congratulations. You qualify to run for President. LOL.

Frankly, I was more convinced by the story about how to tell when an elderly person shouldn't drive anymore. At least that story had a valid point and didn't suffer from such an obvious bias.

How does my comment make me a "groupie"? Where did you get I was so "ready"? Why is charismatic bad? Do all charismatic leader cause "damage"? Or are you just blathering?

Well, he's a fake because of his manipulation of the language and his very astute observation of human nature. When they're angry and scared, give them "hope". Doesn't matter if its overly general, jingoistic or can't possibly overturn 200 plus years of the way things are done, just give them "hope", false or not. All talk no action doesn't a leader make. What'll be next? Vote for the one with the cutest smile!

Too cerebral you say? This is the man that pulls the race card with every challenge. Too cerebral? This is the man that could not interpret the front page cover of the New Yorker!

Too cerebral? . . . Only Eleanor Clift could ask the question, but then she lost her political credibility many, many months ago.

Ms. Clift's animated defence of Obama on the McLaughlin Group and in her articles validates her lack of credibility with political analysis.

Enough said . . . Obama is very, very far from cerebral. She might as well say Geo. W. is similar to Hemingway!!

  • Posted By: Jack3213 @ 08/08/2008 4:39:40 PM

With all due respect, if Obama should win the Presidency all whites would lose control of the USA. Are you ready for that?

    • Posted By: Bass Pro @ 08/08/2008 4:45:40 PM

I'll give it to you. At least you have the stones to identify yourself as a racist. Too bad josemarti's bag is empty.

      • Posted By: josemarti @ 08/08/2008 4:55:44 PM

Dear Bass Pro: It is not a question of race. I would vote for Condie Rice, General Powell, and Justice Thomas any day over McCain.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!! Are you drunk? If Obama is elected president whites will lose all of their power in America? Are you serious? 1) Obama would be the President of America, not of African Americans. 2) Do you think that a president is really the person that runs this country? America power elite are in the board rooms, not the Oval Office. 3) The entire arguement is about the foolishly concieved ive heard on any of these boards, and thats saying alot for a one sentence post; not because it's idiotically phrased, but because i can only assume you believe it.

He's got more faces/mindsets than anyone I've ever seen!!!! Oh, and his new "BRAINSTORM" airing up your tires will CURE ALL OFOUR OIL PROBLEMS>>>NOW, that's what I called cerebral...duh!!!!

  • Posted By: notroubleatall1963 @ 08/08/2008 6:34:46 PM

I'd say we're sorely lacking such style and approach, and we DEFINITELY need it! Judging by some of the comments below, I think our educational system might need an overhaul, but that's fodder for another topic.

    Nice article. Thank you Eleanor!

Let's talk about the following which is hardly a 'Reagan Moment' but another 'Obama Moment' filled with 'slam your own country and country men/women.

???America is ???, uh, is no longer, uh ??? what it could be, what it once was. And I say to myself, I don???t want that future for my children.???

I'm sure 'We' (You must be referring to the French) like hearing this kind of garbage but I know US'A' do not.

    • Posted By: jnakhoul @ 08/08/2008 4:09:24 PM

    • Posted By: sharenews @ 08/08/2008 5:21:33 PM

It did not sit well with me, thought it was not respectful, when Obama spoke about Washingtons failures in recent years in his speech in Berlin in front of 200,000 Germans, where he we ended with this:
???I know my country has not perfected itself,??? Obama said to wide applause from the looming crowd before him. ???At times, we have struggled to keep the promise of liberty and equality for all of our people.??? Again, thunderous reaction from crowd.

I dont think it was his position to be on foreign land pointing our U.S. failures or faults. Not good.

      • Posted By: busby @ 08/08/2008 6:09:47 PM

Agreed, all criticism is supposed to stop at these shores. I guess we should feel honored. We are about to elect a prez who knows exactly what this world needs and he's gonna give it to us. Must be a lot of training in, what is it ", community organizing" with a little bit of con thrown in.

    • Posted By: mrzoid @ 08/08/2008 3:37:39 PM

You seem to have a real problem with the french. Also, I love how the republicans have latched onto Reagan as some kind of a prophet. He didnt get this kind of recognition when he was in office. I think it's because the GOP has no other president to put on a pedestal; but would you please describe for me what a "Reagan Moment" entails, and dont use that whole tired "tear down this wall" thing like Joshua bringing down the walls of Jericho. Give me something else.

      • Posted By: Bass Pro @ 08/08/2008 4:21:25 PM

He's upset with the french because Marcel Marceau can speak better than John McCain.

      • Posted By: Driver of wagons @ 08/08/2008 4:06:08 PM

You are exactly correct! Reagan was a media bliss and the media turned a blind eye to his many destructive policies that we still suffer from today as a country

  • Posted By: AskPlus @ 08/08/2008 4:15:11 PM

Processors understand process. Not hard to discern who can process. And who can't.

    • Posted By: sharenews @ 08/08/2008 5:47:17 PM

Obama is, simply put, a processed product that David Axelrod so masterfully created and marketed and got people grasping onto all focused on Hope and Change with no regard to substance. It is sad that some people are so much in need of hope and change and can be blinded the the likes of a manufactured well spoken man who has minimal credentials for experience and specific major accomplishments to backup his capability to lead as President. At least I , for one, will not be delusioned into voting for Mr. Barack Obama. Too scary of a thought.

  • Posted By: Bass Pro @ 08/08/2008 4:30:41 PM

Is Eleanor by saying Obama is very intellegent saying at the same time that he intimidates those who aren't? In other words those that aren't intimidated by intellegence would naturally lean towards Obama and those that are intimidated would seek their comfort level. Do the mouth-breathing republicans think Obama is too intellegent to be president and McCain dumb enough?

  • Posted By: mjbruce @ 08/08/2008 4:14:26 PM

Our brains have many many facets to it. Obama is not using alot of his. Lets get him to debate McCain. Hes been invited to it many times. And to many of the conservative radio hosts also. But refuses, because he will have to answer the tuff questions and people will be able to see through him. Without a teleprompter in front of him, he just cannot come out with the answers right on the spot. He stutters, hems haws. Really silly.!

    • Posted By: AskPlus @ 08/08/2008 4:26:47 PM

Don't most of you guys say all he is a talker, orator and smooth? Are you sure it's not Mr. McCain who stumbles and mutters? Are you sure you want a one-on-one with Mr. Obama? Are you sure you would lose all semblance of leadership, and go where your opponent told you to go? Just asking.

  • Posted By: CloudNineAtlanta @ 08/08/2008 3:18:48 PM

Eleanor Clift confuses a "cool, cerebral style" with a SNAKE OIL SALESMAN - and I am dumbfounded that half of our country is so utterly deceived. If Obama becomes President, America will be in dire trouble.

    • Posted By: TwentyFirstCenturyAmerican @ 08/08/2008 3:44:25 PM

You gOpers, you are the morons who put GWB in power for 8 years and let the country go to dogs. All intellectuals support Obama. The state of Massachusetts, which is known as Mecca of Learning, always supported democrats. Unfortunately, the people in many other states are not that well educated, and hence I am afraid that the Americans may lose the opportunity of having an all time best president and go for the wimp with neither style nor substance. If that wrinkly dude goes abroad, how will he communicate with foreign dignitaries? Will he have a town hall there too?

      • Posted By: Bass Pro @ 08/08/2008 4:10:27 PM

I believe the term is " G OLD Pers"

And don't get too cozy in Hotlanta, Georgia turned from Red to light red this year and as Atlanta grows it will offset the rest of the state and turn light blue. Much to the delight of the majority of those who live between Macon and the N.C. border. I'm sure you know of what i speak.

    • Posted By: Bass Pro @ 08/08/2008 3:58:18 PM

It's more than half of the country that supports Obama, chump. Please don't fret about your dumbfoundedness, it natural for you mouth-breather to feel that way. I guess you think it normal to support a candidate who would send our best and bravest young men and women to die in Iraq just to keep the white house and continue the lie? What kind of a person would sacrifice our troops just to realize their own ambition and what kind of a person would support them?

    • Posted By: mrzoid @ 08/08/2008 3:43:40 PM

Well, half of the country being decieved by the whole "hope" thing is better than 90% of the country being decieved into believing that Iraq was involved in 9/11, or that Iraq had WMD, or that a rainbow telling us how much danger we were in was making us safer. Never be suprised by what "decieves" the citizens of this country.

    • Posted By: notroubleatall1963 @ 08/08/2008 3:30:51 PM

You must be confusing Obama with Bush Jr, the classic "used car salesman with a pedigree" as I've heard people describe him.

Obama has integrity, which is more than I can say for McCain's camp.

    • Posted By: notroubleatall1963 @ 08/08/2008 3:27:55 PM

I think you've been brainwashed by your Church or something...?
