    Russia is not interesting in war with Georgia. In the youth osetia are living osetians with russian's citizenship since 1991year. UNO is sleeping, only Russia protects rules of thousands people. Saakashvili is criminal and very foolish politician. His order to stabilize constitutional formation is destruction of 1500 peace inhabitants. All world must thank Russia.Russia never begin wars.

    One of the best article I've read on the matter on western media . Saakashvili attacked first, he has made a gamble and nothing more (that is, more: a stupid gamble), and now Moscow has found a reason to send in South Ossetia as many men, tanks and weapon as it can contain . That is, Moscow has already won the war . No need to "make Georgia cry" for Putin, no march on Tbilisi is necessary (and no one will be done) . The days of Saakashvili as a leader are numbered . And this is good for Georgia too .

      Doesn't sound to me like it's black and white. I know Russia would not put up with a similar action inside its borders. so why should Georgia?

    No country is better off allied with Putin and his money skimming government, then being allied with the western democracies. Let's hope that Georgia survives (along with its legitimately elected government).

    Note: Putins' government is illegitimate - and that matters in the end.

    There is no military reason Russia can't assault Tbilisi withing weeks, forcing the Georgian government to flee. Are there any political reasons to stop Russia from taking all of Georgia?

    Good article with author showing some deep understanding of the issues of the region. Much better than majority of the one-sided articles on the topic. Georgia would really be much better as an ally of Russia, but Saakashvilli couldn't have come to power without help from the US, as his predessor was the one already backed up by Moscow.
    Adding the "reunify Georgia" platform Saakashvilli had run on, has surely put him into a deadlock situation with little chances to become allies with Russia. A shame.
