Live From Italy. The "honeymoon" is lasting much long. The longest honeymoon we suppouse.
1)The revolution of these 100 days depends in part from Mr. Veltroni, which simplified the Italian Politics with the elimination of the "large coalitions", in which communists, democrats, catholics and so on stayed together. So Mr. Berlusconi did the same, and his governement is composed by only two parties.
2)The "Justice" theme in Italy is very difficult to understand for the other nations. In Italy, people don't believe anymore to the justice, because of the political views of large part of the judges, because of the abuse of the blackmail (also for stupid thing like lovers and so on). Italians believe more in Mr. B. So if he goes against the judges, people stay with him.
    3) The investments on highways, bridges (Messina!), factory is much easier for a coalition without the green parties.
    4) The problem of the immigration is important for the Italians, and the ally of Mr. B (Lega Nord) takes care about these theme.
    5) Berlusconi is an anomaly, like Italy. We are the anomaly... just saying: "It rains in the Alps... the World is isolated"

Three points: A) Compare crime statistics between USA and Italy based on actual crimes murders and rapes per 1000 citizens; hint the US is ten times more violence and imprisons well over 1% of its population. B) Compare Italian GDP output per citizen compared say to China or India; you will be surprised to see that italy outputs 80% of China's GDP with 4.6% of its population. Try the same math for India. C) Italian communists have had only one goal since the 1920's: the overthrow and destruction of the Italian State and the creation of communist internationalist union of workers: if Mao and Stalin where any indication opposition to that is warranted, and quite frankly the left's democratic credentials are laughable. So do not assume that what you read is true, its simply an attempt on the part of the leftist intelligentsia to overthrow the parliament: Italians went to the polls and decided they want a mix of social conservatism, regional autonomy and capitalism. The left lost. Their ideas have lost. They are losers and poor ones at that. Stop taking your facts from looser communists and look up the facts. Its like saying the South is backwards, really? Why dont you go visit STMicroelectronics facilities or Allenia's?

Honey- Get a degree in Econ before claiming that the South is developed only thanks to STM and Alenia, which employ about 2,000 people altogether. Also, Italy as a country is specialized in traditional sectors such as textiles and mechanics. Chinese competition is already kicking us out of the market. The truth is, all this anticommunist rethoric is the fault of the US' years of financing the Christian Democrats for the purpose of fighting "Communism". As a result, Italy is now mired in corruption. Americans should get the facts before praising the wonders of a country their governments have contributed to destroying.

Just to mention one point, concerning law-enforcement the outstanding problems in Italy are the length of judicial proceedings, the uncertainty of punishment, and the persistence of organized crime in Southern Italy. The Berlusconi government(s) have never done miracles concerninge these issues. I think the author of the article should go beyond the surface, as Mr Berlusconi's top ability is to hide the substance with appearence; consider the act of sending soldiers on patrols: is a handful of soldiers really going to change the situation? It is more of a spectacular action, designed to draw consense from a not-critical-enough public. Italy's problem require long-term actions, not spectacular moves. For these reasons I am very skeptical about the future performance of Berlusconi's government.

IBERLUSCONI CON LE SUE PENDENZE CON LA GIUSTIZIA, L'EVASIONE, I SUOI MEZZI D'INFORMAZIONE....potrebbe mai aver fatto politica negli USa ?

This article is a blatant demonstration of how blatantly shallow some journalists can be just to sound right. Silvio has cleaned up the main streets of Naples, and may I ask where he has put the dirt.
I guess an approval ratiing of 55% based ion the support of cessasionnists in the north and neo.fascists in Rome is all that counts as far as the writer cares.
Saving himself from prosecution and his Tv stations from European law is deserving of praise from Newsweek.
Blaming all the problems of Italy on immigrants and harassing them is all Berlusconi has done in these 100 days. Have you asked how many legal immigrants have a valid residence permit in Italy? They have to cue for hours to pick up residence permits that have been in processing for a year and have to cue the very next day to renew them.
i guess with this article News Weeks has decided to give a ringing endorsement to racism and homofobia in Italy. Thanks News Week.

Those who believe King Silvio I has worked a miracle in 100 days simply don't live in Italy or have raw ham slices covering up their eyes! The suburbs of Naples are still covered in litter (only the downtown area having been cleaned) and security has certainly not increased thanks to a few hundreds of soldiers being sent to patrol major cities (in Milan, 350 soldiers for 2 million residents). In the meantime, Ratzinga Z and the catholic church have secured hold of this country's politics through a cryptocathofascist party that has clearly said gays are to have fewer rights than household pets! Before this article, I had a vague impression Newsweek was a one-horse magazine, now I have the certainty. Those defending King Silvio I must know they are being accomplices to a dangerous man who will cause this country to shut down just like Argentina a few years ago. Wait and see!

You seem reluctant in your writing well of Berlusconi. "Cleaning up trash and harassing immigrants won't be enough": certainly not, but cleaning trash in Naples, you must admit, is a sort of miracle, and the trash is not hidden anywhere except in the head of those who insist that this operation has only been a maquillage. Besides this, you forgot a few things, for example the new rules regarding the public administration that restored - swiftly and miraculously - the health of about 20% absentees, about Alitalia not going to fall in the hands of its competitor, of the agreement being discussed with the banks to loosen the stranglehold on those who bought a house and obtained a bank loan in the past few years.

100 days to save Naples, him self and his close friends.
The article forgets to mention the law to postpone judicial proceedings by a year, downgraded later to "at the discretion of the judge". and of course it forgets to mention the law about phone tapping and the rnegated ights of journalists to publish them. (see the fotball scandal that was possible only because of tapping - just to mention something you may have heard abroad)
100 days not for Italy but for himself, his trouble with the law and his prestige, some italians have benifited indirectly..

I wouldn't call it a miracle, he always does that when he goes to power......... question is why Italians can't see that?

I'm italian and I live in Naples, and I can say that you are totally wrong about the security! There is lots to do but I think we are on the right way!For Naples rubbish you have no idea! You cant resolve a problem like this in 100days!You even don't khow much rubbish was in the city!Compare to before it's much better! In one year the problem is resolved!!The real problem of Italy is that the past Goverments didn't make one single thing for the Country, the only made their own business!A wonderful country like Italy doesn't deserve such a life!

    • Posted By: carlomilano @ 08/12/2008 12:41:58 PM

Yes...but Bassolino and friends must be removed. Why many people vote him!?
      However...W l'Italia! :)

  • Posted By: lorentium @ 08/12/2008 12:32:38 PM

the problem with Italy is that politics is a business, positions held by really old men (not women) who want to protect their personal interests and wealth and retire with a massive pension. We pay 43% in taxes so old politicians, and a lot of them, can live off our taxes...comfortably. Italy will not change because it is not in the best interest of a political system that is one of the slowest to move on economic reform. Berlusconi may be a lot of things, he may be wily and opportunistic, but at least he wants to pull Italy out of these dark ages of old-style Italian government to serve a bunch of overly paid, underworked, incompetent politicians. Bravo Silvio, continua a fare quello che stai facendo!

Maybe it was not a miracle, but succeeded in a very short time where in other years there have succeeded. Surely it is the beginning of change or rather of establishing clear rules. The time of cleverly (I hope) is coming to an end. Those who voted hope and want that.

    Miracle?
But the author have visited the suburb of Naples?
Naples is more bigger that the main square
About the security, I live in Italy and don't see any change about security and I don't thing this is the problem with big priority now

The only change that is see is the rumors (in part already approved) about the cut in balance to the police(!), scientist research (already the last in Europe), school and safety of territory but this news don't arrive in the TV

  • Posted By: carlomilano @ 08/12/2008 11:50:49 AM

Berlusconi is not the best, but it's very clear when he speaks. There isn't another cheif in Italy that can manage the nation....today, tomorrow may be...

  • Posted By: simone37 @ 08/12/2008 11:36:12 AM

Miracle? What kind of Miracle? The rubbish in Naples was moved to the surrounding of the city, and the rubbish is the news about a new Naples (see the irish indipendent: http://www.independent.ie/world-news/europe/cleanup-claims-are-a-load-of-rubbish-1435663.html)

about security nothing changed, only a few claim, a different set of news on the TV (half owned by Berlusconi, half under control being the head of the govern) and at-voilá Italy "looks" better, but is actually the same.

How can you do this article without mentioning the laws again done by Berlusconi to stop his own processes in court that made the Govern busy 70% of the time for that first 100 days?
