dear cmaddaloni, lots of important people in Italy worked so hard to catch Berlusca. Just a name: Marco Travaglio, a journalist. So, people that had lot more power then me (I'm just an university student) fought again Berlusca and eventually they didn't manage. Probably you don't know the Italian system. I know it enough (because i'm Italian) to can say what i said. It is known as Berlusca had to get in politic because his business was not very clear. If it was clear, why he didn't leave his television for politic? He needed television because he had to win come hell or hig water if he wanted to cover all his corruption deals. And also his television are illegal as well as lots of his business. But i mean, what are the news? That is Italy. Come on. All people from everywhere know it. We are the country of mafia and corruption. Do you really think that a man alone could become rich like Berlusca without have any influence from politic and mafia? He is just the speakensmouth of a group of gentlemen who in italy we know very well.

hi maro, hi incaz, nice to mee you (piacere di conoscervi). I agree with you both. Berlusca is owner of our communication and a kind of dictator. He is the man who showed himself like "the worker president", and in the mean time he talks about communist like people that eat children. I also want to make you remember Berlusca when boot out our best RAI jornalist because they talked about his interests, and even the man who in the european parlament showed Ityaly like a fascism country.

Then simply write that e-mail to Bob Costas and Matt Lauer. 2 minutes of your time won't mess up your schedule, but can make a difference in terms of supporting the free press againts the lies and the propaganda. Italy will be grateful for life.

I don't Know where you got that but Naples is one the minimum things that Mr Berlusconi have done in fact that was only an image for him to show how big he is , but indeed he has done anything because if you have the chance to go around the Regions you will realized that nothing has changed as tipical as him . So guys next time make sure that what you're saying is true otherwise other countries will think that we're better with Mr. Berlusconi .
    thanks

That is only the truth... Italy will be much better due to Berlusconi.... you can beet on it!!! The fact is that left-wingers are eaten by envy... consider an advise: instead of trying to make Berlusconi appear as a monster abroad, take some lessons of English language... maybe that way people will be able to understand you!

Silvio his the man who say he created all his empire alone, and instead he made it helped by mafia. He is the guy who. His empire is made by media: once he became a politician he had the control of media (his own) that he used for advasment his new party and himself. Once he became the premier he has the controll of almost all national italian media. He boot out the greatest italian journalists from RAI. Having the media power is not only a conflict of interest, but it also means we have a kind of dictator like the big brother of geroge orwell. I think that all Berlusconi says is just a mediatic event, no realituy.

    • Posted By: cmaddaloni @ 08/13/2008 2:44:51 PM

Dear Andretz if you have evidence of such illegal practices and connection with mafia why don't you to to the police and report all you have? As far as I can read the judicial system is independent and is not collateral to Berlusconi. So instead of complaining here you should carry on with your evidences.

If you search internet you'll find somethimg. This is a summary (in italian) of Berlusconi's affairs with mafia:
        http://voglioscendere.ilcannocchiale.it/?id_blogdoc=1679434
For example Mangano, Berlusconi horses' groom (groom who actually didn't know nothing about horses, as results from trial), has been condamned for 3 murders, drugs traffic and mafious associations. There are telephonic tapping showing deals between Mangano and Dell'Utri (the man who makes Berlusconi's party) about the buiyng of drugs with Berlusconi's money.
If you search Propaganda 2 and compare its action plan with Berlusconi's political story you will find lots of analogy.
Why Berlusconi has not been condamned? His lawyers (who are also parliament members) makes laws that coincidentally decriminalize the offences for whom he was on trial. Besides few weeks ago, just before militarisation of italian cities, a law assured him impunity.
But I don't blame you if you don't know these things. Italian newspaper don't speak about this, because the 90% of information is under Berlusconi's control. This is why we don't need a foreign magazine that justify him.

A sample e-mail to send to NBC in case any of you wants to congatulate Bob Costas and Matt Lauer for their opinions on Berluska during the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics. To be sent to: nbcolympicsfeedback@nbcuni.com

    TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN

Please forward this to Bob Costas and Matt Lauer, two American heroes who during the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics have depicted Silvio Berlusconi as what he truly is. A banana-republic dictator who would not even think of confronting derision by the world community at large. Thanks Bob and Matt for setting the record straight. Your work should get the Pulitzer Prize right away.
Thanks from Italy, a country now under the rule of a dangerous man who, in 5 years, will probably cause this country to crumble just like Argentina. Thanks for exposing the truth, which our press just doesn't have the guts to do.
    Sincerely,

Thanks Bob and Matt. Shame on Newsweek.

Just copy and paste into an e-mail. A couple of minutes only, but you can make a difference.

  • Posted By: zeitgeist_run @ 08/13/2008 9:37:29 AM

There is confusion on this matter. I try to express my points.

It is matter of fact that in Italy most of the people in the parliament are there mainly for their own interests.

It is a matter of fact that to maintain their privileges and power they came in contact with different types of criminals in the years, at different level.

But never, ever, had anyone changed the criminal case laws, the investigations tools, the rules, the immunities, and the constitution of the CSM to defend himself from trials.

It is a matter of fact that this happened for two main reasons:
    - total control of the media (it is an old idea from Craxi and Gelli), that in 15 years sucked completely the Italians brains till reduce us to amoebas, only capable to talk of soccer and realities, but totally unable to document, to double check, to reason;
    - full complicity of the left parties, that understood how winner is this behaviour.

I already told you: the evidence to fully understand what is happening in Italy are still available (there are dozen of telephone tappings performed by the investigators, now public, that spread light on what this guy really his), there are the results of all the trials, the sentences...

If you only check the chrono of the Italian Parliament sessions during his previous mandate, 2001-2006 (from the official Italian Parliament site) and confront it with the chrono of his trials, to understand how the Parliament was driven by his necessity to save his person from jail, etc...

I do not want to convince anybody, I am just saying, before it will be too late, please double check everything you have been told, and do it using all the tools that we still have, all around the world, but do not trust any info coming from Italian Media.

If you are not yet Mr. SB addicted and you still believe in freedom, you will realize yourself.

    • Posted By: cmaddaloni @ 08/13/2008 2:54:31 PM

Well you actually forgot to mention that when other politicians have been scrutinized by the investigator, like the former Minister of Foreign Affairs, the judge that was working on that investigation was transferred to another job. The same happened to the one that was investigating on the former Prime Minister and his Minister of justice. So mentioning only Berlusconi is not sufficient.

  • Posted By: Andretz @ 08/13/2008 1:32:08 PM

Berlusconi is a man who say he made his empire by himself, and instead he made it because he was corrupted and friend of mafia. It is not a problem, because always in our history politician from both right and left ideas were corrupted: no news in this one. But the main problem in this situation is the conflict of interest. In fact, not only Berlusconi, friend of italian mafia, create an economic empire made by media, but also he became a politician who control lots of communication in italy: this lokks like a dictature....

Those of you who want to send an e-mail to Bob Costas and Matt Lauer to congratulate them for putting Berluska back in his place can do so at nbcolympicsfeedback@nbcuni.com. Those who believe in true journalism and the quest for truth, and despise propaganda and ass-kissing, will gladly spend 5 minutes to send such an e-mail. Shame on Newsweek.

If newsweek trust in democracy, later or soon it will have to apologizes for this article.
Berlusconi went to power corrupting politicians, judges, advocates, and with the strong support of P2.
It would be better to talk about the corruption of italian politicians, and their affairs with mafia, camorra, ndrangheta, sacra corona unita and with fascist masonic lodges.

Nobody is harassing immingrants: I would say we Italians are harassed by the millions illegal immigrants! I voted Berlusconi and I do strongly support him! There is not other country in the world where foreigner can enter freely doing what they like with the connivance of the left responsible also of the present crisis. My fingerprints were taken in various countries where I have been working with a multinational company, like India, Venezuela and now when entering the United States, I have never considered that as an harassment, so why are you saying that foreigners and in particular Roms are harassed by the Italian Government?

I live in the north of Italy and I know that Berlusconi's not the best person in the world to govern Italy: many times he showed himself as a liar and a mediocre man, but I can say Italy isn't easy to rule. In the north there is the problem of security, in the south of crime and trash (the differentiation of rubbish doesn't exist) but he has tried at least to do something. I despise him as a man but as a politician he's better than many others. I hope Italy is going to improve its conditions.

"...if the Enemy don't surrenders, it must be annihilated!..." (Lenin, 1918).
Unfortunately, this is the first rule in the mind of the majority of the writers: the Enemy always changes, but the final aim is to destroy it, if possible legally, otherwise "with the Sword of Justice". And if ther's not the Justice, here is the Sword. The Story hasn't learned so much to these new fans of Vishijnsky, nostalgics of Dzerzinskij. Dear Gabrielik, do you know this names? Don't you? I'm a great expert of History, I learned most of it during a football game.

@ashley: Right. But being prime minister allow him to control other three channels, RAI television. With those channels he's got now six and I repeat SIX CHANNELS under his control. In Italy there are seven national channels. Controlling six of seven televisions can ensure free information? The answer is "No". So, without free information he can make you believe what does he want, hiding the truth. And he makes you believe that Naples is clean with the opening of new landfills. But also Prodi wanted to open new landfills, and Naples wasn't so clean now, close to the city nothing is changed. Ant the "monnezza" problem exists in all the Campania region by 10-15 years, not by "months". But, most important, you said: "berlusconi lies, cheats, steal and evreything.true.but who did not?the Left (parliament)is supported by the Mafia and Camorra just as well as the other parts of the parliament". It's right. But it's not a good reason to continue to be prime minister and continue to lie. He should be different, but he doesn't. Let's think about it.

To be pragmatical the plain truth is that Berlusconi is by far the best option we have in Italy at the moment:
he wants to to well. has enthusiasm, has all the power he needs in Parliament, he is determined to get rid of all the long-standing problems we have in our country.
Many opposers don't really mind about their country . They just care about their political points of view: for them it's best an utter disaster with a left-wing government than a real success under Berlusconi.
Well done, Newsweek!!! A really good and what's most - unbiased - article.
    Italy is changing!!

    • Posted By: zeitgeist_run @ 08/13/2008 9:07:49 AM

Dear Pat63, Italy is changing? To be pragmatic, amongst the tons of evidence we have on Mr. SB, do you really think that a man that is letting Italy to pay a fee of ~300000,00 Euro per day (retroactively from 01/01/2006) for his own private interest will save this country? (Trial Di Stefano-Europa 7/Rete4, check the final sentence after 10 years on the European Court of Justice site).

Nobody before him, not even during the fascism, had ever changed our Codice Penale to defend himself from the several trials he faced and he is facing.

And no problem if to save himself, he made this country a heaven for all the criminals of the world, that here can go freely unpunished.

The problem is not what he says, but the ones who believe him. These ones are ruining Italy.

Do you know why Forleo and De Magistris have been removed from their investigations? Please check yourself, wherever you want but not on the Italian News (there is no freedom in this country and if you start to document and cross check everything yourself you will realize).

Take also a look at what type of investigations were working Mr. Falcone and Mr. Borsellino before the bombs blasted (the investigation was started by Swiss investigators).

Have you ever read or heard about a book written by Max Parisi (the most important journalist from Lega Nord) called 'Soldi Sporchi al Nord'? [written before Mr. SB bought Lega Nord].

As I wrote, there are so many evidence about the career of this man, you only need to look for them, if you are honest and believe in democracy.

You consider our 0.0% of GDP growth a success? I think this is a BIG disaster

      • Posted By: tina444 @ 08/13/2008 8:22:14 AM

Even to the stones It is notorious that the influence on the GDP is not deriving from short-term policies. Experts agree that it will take at least one year. Therefore, reserve your appreciation to the previous government, at lest for a while.

        • Posted By: Gabrielik @ 08/13/2008 8:32:29 AM

the problem is that the forecast is even worse, so it means that if this shity government don't do anything we'll have recession in the future (but I think that if they did something, the situation would worsen). Of course for you the fault is someone else's (previous governments, worldwide economy, etc.), so no way to discuss with you about that. For you berlusconi is god, and gods are never wrong in their believers' eyes

          • Posted By: tina444 @ 08/13/2008 8:48:32 AM

    @ashley

ok, let's pretend to forget how berlusconi got his 3 channels and how the broadcasting was regulated by his friend craxi, there is a law in italy by which someone who has a public license (and a broadcaster HAS a public license) cannot be a member of the italian parliament. this law has been ignored with the help of the center-left parties, and after that mr. confalonieri became the license owner iso mr. berluscon. so i woouldn't say everything is so legal...

Today's news: Fencer valentina vezzali, winner of a gold medal at the olympics, self-appointed ambassador of this one-horse country and most probably an elector of King Silvio I, has asked the government to detax his earnings at the games (Euros 140,000, ten times the salary of the average blue-collar worker...). Poor thing, she works hard to represent italy every 4 years winning a stupid medal...
      Tina444, any pearls of yours?
