Odd that there is no accountability in our government. 911, Hurricane Katrina, the subprime mess, the lack of cohesive energy policy for the past eight years, rampant inflation, war cost overruns; this is only the beginning of the list. The media tells the story as if Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae are mythical characters out of a comic book. Someone is supposed to be in charge of these institutions and writing policy to protect the public. If I am not mistaken, the President of the United States is in charge of ALL employee's of the United States government. Where does the buck stop? It seems to keep 'bucking' us every time we turn around.

Re: The result "was major jihad by the lending industry," which killed the bill, says Kevin Baker, the committee's chief counsel.

Misuse of the word Jihad typical of the way we Americans use words to suit our own selfish needs.

    Nothing new in this story.

Another All american story of abuse of power, rip-offs of the poor and needy,
and the dangerous way that lobbyists and their evil supporters abuse the system
    to meet their selfish ends.

Fannie and Freddie deserve plenty of blame here, but what about the many individuals who spent and lived beyond their means. The real issue is that of self-entitlement. People want too much and blame everyone else but themselves when things go wrong. HELLO!!!!!!!!!

PLEASE read posts by Romeo and Mortimor........LOOK IN THE MIRROR PEOPLE!!! It is a damned shame when someone like Phil Graham speaks the truth and must disappear from the public stage before his candidate loses and election. God forbid a candidate give it straight to the American people.....he/she will be relegated to the dust bin of history!!! EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING in economics starts with the individual..........EVERYONE is looking for a free ride..............EVERYONE wants something for nothing..........LOOK IN THE MIRROR...........WAKE UP!!!! For Gosh sake PLEASE build some character. We have become a nation of consumers. We produce nothing.........we as a people become lazier, fatter, and more dim witted every day. At this point in time it should be clear and obvious to even thick-witted, our national government is manipulated by big banking. It then follows that state government is manipulated by big banking. It then follows that you and I are manipulated by big banking. And that stranglehold is growing stronger, and stronger, and stronger. Today, instead of creating a framework for private enterprise, our government is selectively supporting a few private enterprises - Fanniie and Freddie. Tomorrow, big banking will TELL our government who to suppport. It is late people, very late.

As one of the lobbyists that was protecting the availability of mortgage lending in Georgia I have to weigh in on this by disagreeing with your spin on this story. While I greatly respect and remember fondly working with Chris Carpenter it is a fact, not simply a threat by some unnamed Republican Senator that lending in Georgia came to a very dangerous place in the Winter of 2003.

To now quote Governor Barnes (once again someone that I have respect for but disagree with profusely on the issues here) as saying that he remembers making brilliant warnings for the future is no better than asking me after the Super Bowl who I thought was going to win.

He never predicted the future for the industry. He and Chris Carpenter simply caved into the wishes of NACA and the AARP in the hope that at least they would vote for him in 2002 since he had already successfully ticked off pretty much every other significant group in Georgia... from the teachers to the Confederate Sons of America (I would like to say at this time I agreed with his position with regard to the state flag).

Anyway, in a few years if you wish to contact me and ask me if I knew all along who would win the College Football National Championship I will be happy to talk to you in 2012 or so and then say "I told them all along that ________ would win it all!"

    LITTLE PINK SUBPRIME HOUSES
(to the Melody of Pink Houses by John Mellencamp)

Theres a black man with a black cat
    Living in a redline neighbourhood
Hes got an interstate runnin through his front yard
You know, he thinks, negative equities good
And theres a woman in the kitchen cleanin up the evening slop
And he looks at her and says: hey darling, I think this interest rates over the top!

    Chorus:
Oh but aint that america for you and me
Aint that america were somethin to see baby
Aint that america, home of the subprime disease
Little pink houses for you and me

Well theres a young man in a t-shirt
Listening to Greedspan shoot the breeze
Hes got a greasy hair, greasy smile
He says: lord, Lehman must be my destination
cuz they told me, when I was younger
Boy, youre gonna work in a wall street bank
But just like CDOs, those crazy old dreams
    Just kinda came and went

    Chorus:
Oh but aint that america for you and me
Aint that america were something to see baby
Aint that america, home of the SEC
Little pink houses for you and me

Well theres bankers and more brokers
What do they know know know
Go to work in some high rise
And vacation out at the Hamptons, oh no!
    Ohhh yeah
And theres winners, and theres losers
But they aint no big deal
cuz the simple man baby pays for the thrills,
The pills and the bills that kill

    Chorus:
Oh but aint that america for you and me
Aint that america were somethin to see baby
Aint that america, home of the riskless real estate dream
Little pink houses for you and me

Oh but aint that america for you and me
Aint that america were somethin to see baby
Aint that america, home of investment banker greed
Little pink houses for you and me

We need individuals with ethical behavior and integrity that will bring back the usury laws for all credit, cards, houses, auto etc. No one can handle 240% interest rates...I understand from PBS Moyers' program, they are now going after the poor....They have no shame!!!! But no worry...justice will prevail some day...if not here in the hereafter and I would NOT want to be in their shoes...the cries and the prayers of the needy will be heard and the greedy will deserve what they get unless they change their ways...!!!

It is neither Republicans nor Democrats who are doing this. It is the merchants. I'm not a bible thumper, but I seem to recall that ONLY the merchants were kicked out of the church by Christ. Maybe we need to kick them out of government also. Because they are, it seems, causing all of our problems. Further, we need laws that can not be changed by the whims of those who have lots of money. Because as long as someone can pay a lot of money and get any kind of law passed - then we will never have fair and equitable laws. All we will ever have are lopsided, unrealistic, anti-American, corporate-oriented laws. Further, we should stop listening to the lies and require all court cases to be placed onto the internet with open feeds into all hearings. To wit - no more closed cases. For evil, as it has been pointed out time and time again, can only grow in the darkness - not in the light. And closed doors only serve to hide the evil within.

Gunslinger said: "We need to get Republicans out of office and send as many to jail as possible."
fannie and freddie are private co with no implied backstop from the Federal Gov go read the prospectus.
The 800 billion dollar bailout was all about bailing out Chinese gov. and Asian investors who hold... drumroll please, 800 billion dollars of fannie and freddie debt. They put a gun in Americas mouth and said to the Feds, "backstop it or we sell it and buy no more of your crappy American debt. The same holds true with US treasury debt. Other central banks and Governments buy American debt in the form of treasury bills and bonds because American cannot stop begging for more free programs. America wants everything for free, free lunch, free hips, free food, free everything, somebody else should pay. There is no one else but taxpayers and other large debt holders and they want big interest to hold crappy American debt. So not only do you want it free but "free" now comes with interest that your children and grandchildren will have to pay because it's all everyones else's bill to pay you think. Your children will be in debtors prison the minute they breech to womb because BOTH parties cannot say NO MORE!! Until you get your head wrapped aroud the truth that both Repubs and Dems work the system and are in a contest of "who can spend the most" because Americans want it all but want someone else to pay for it you will always be a debt slave.
What will happen to America when other countries hold 51% of all of American debt in their hands, you got it.
Fannie and Freddie own both parties. You want change! it aint never going to come from your state capital or D.C. It' going to come from your own gut. I say a choice between the lesser of two evis is not a choice, it's a threat!

Gunslinger said: "We need to get Republicans out of office and send as many to jail as possible. Republican office holders have worked tirelessly to help commerce defraud consumers"
and the majority of Dems voted for the 800 billion dollar bailout of the GSE's, the Chinese hold about 800 billion of Fannie debt. They put a gun in our mouth and said bailout fannie or we sell this crap and stop buying your debt America.
Stop blaiming the Poiticians, we did it to ourselves because we want it all NOW, SS, Drug programs, free lunch, free dinner, free, free, free! When others own our debt they make the rules.
America, you are the final bagholder, there is no more free lunch. You want to run your debt to the stratosphere go ahead but when we buy your debt your government better make good on it or we stop buying your crappy debt. You want the truth, you can't handle the truth!!! America needs to stop spending future generations into a deeper hole. Both parties are up to their eyeballs in this and until you stop picking sides and start blaming both they will always have a ball and chain on your ankle. God help your children America, they will be in a debtors prison the moment they leave the womb.

We need to get Republicans out of office and send as many to jail as possible. Republican office holders have worked tirelessly to help commerce defraud consumers, eliminate safety and health standards for food, drugs and workplaces. Republicans in office have subverted civil service rules so that unqualified poltical hacks replaced career civil servants hired and promoted on the basis of merit. Once hired, the Republican "fifth column" has worked to subvert our government and ideals--what's worse, unless Democrats win and have a free hand to conduct a thorough house cleaning in all federal agencies they will continue the subversion after the election. I support criminal sentences for most Republican office holders and the firing of all federal employees hired during the past 8 years for any kind of management or enforcement rule if they are registered Republicans. This is the only way to return government to the people, Republicans are worse than communists.

Georgia has a history of electing some of the most powerful minds--and some of the biggest idiots--in politics. Witness Jimmy Carter, Roy Barnes, Senator Russell, Sam Nunn--all men who saw clearly and fought for what was right irregardless of party affiliations. Like every state, we have had some screw-ups like Lester Maddox-who was arguably dumb like a fox and certainly entertaining, and the Talmadges. Herman

So we have two companies that are going to require a TRILLION dollars of government bailout money, but they are still paying dividends? How dumb is that. The shareholders of these two incompetent leeches need to do without dividends until the taxpayer is paid off. Only seems right to let the "free market" take care of these supposed capitalists.

And Barnes' sucessor, "Sonny" Perdue, will probably be reelected on a platform of "Fiscal Resposibility" versus those wicked, wasteful Democrats. How ironic.
