I really don't understand people that have comments like they are sick & tired of the country giving away citizen's money & growing the government & the deficit. Who has run this country to the ground & who was encharge of this disaster. Well you guess it the Republican Party & the Chief clown George Bush 2. So what in hell's name are these people talking about? The Republicans have proven that they can't lead & they can't run the economy. There was an article in the paper today that stated that 68% of American companies do not pay any taxes! Do you believe that? They also stated that Foreign Companies pay NO taxes at all ! What is wrong with this picture. That is Republicans & their less taxes that they have cut over the years. What is McCain answer to his economic plan? More of the same. He wants to cut even more taxes! That is outrageous! Sounds to me like Bush 3. What kind of experience Bush had? Bush is the only person I have heard of that bankrupt his OIL company. People really are fools to say that McBush is going to be better than Obama because of the experience factor. McBush only whats to continue the same policy as Bush. Look at the organization & the money that is being run by Obama. That tells you a lot about how he is going to run the country. Hillary mismanaged her campaign & spent money & resources to no avail. McCain was in the same seat until the Republican Party steeped in to help his organization. People should only vote based on what the Party has done in the last 7.5 years. Republicans get an F. Disaster economic policies. Disaster social policies. Disaster handling of Foreign Policy. Disaster in Trade Policy. So tell me Republican brethren just what are YOU & OLD MAN McCain running on! You people are just fools if you vote for McCain.

Thank you for tackling this issue and having the guts to put it in print. I am saddened that few people acknowledge the existence of code words and white men's affirmative action.

With the national debt at this level we don't need bigger Government giving away more money. I'm sick and tired of paying taxes so the our government can give money to people who they think are entitled to something I had to earn for my family! Someone is entitled to something they havn't earned so those of us earning taxable incomes are not entitled to the money we earned? It's time the citzens of this great country take back control from the politicians by voting and hold them accountable for there actions. Theese politicians are supposed to be representing us! Yes the system is broke but the politicians won't fix it unless we the people hold them accountable. Cut out the pork and hand outs, pay down the national debt. I belive in helpining someone who is trying to help themselves yet understand that I can not help any one by making them dependent. Our Government and all those highly educated polticians can't balance a budget yet million of American households with no college education can? I can not be the only person here who sees something wrong with this.
I will not vote for bigger governemnt and bigger handouts! As citizens we all have Rights and certain things we are entitled to, but we all do. No one person should be entitled to anything more or less than another. That is true equality. Beyond that life is what you make of it. Choose not to excell if you want but don't ask those that do to foot the bill. I don't hate those that excell and have more than I do and I don't expect them to give me anything.
Proud of my country Ashamed of my Government!

Repent. Repent. You bitter clinging clingers bitterly clinging to your guns and Bibles. I teach you the Overman. Repent. Repent. Stop your clingling to your clinged on guns and Bibles. Stop clinging. You glingling glingers.

Ms. Quindlen. Your article has left me in a mental torment. I must plead guilty. Guilty. And throw myself at mercy of your court. Oh. How can I find relief from the guilt, the remorse, and the shame. Should I donate to the Obama campaing? But me thinks that a million dollars would hardly satiate those Furies. Should I volunteer? Yes. I will volunteer. I will travel into rural Ohio and Michigan. I will knock and doors and say: Repent. Oh you clinging clingers clinging to your guns and Bibles. I teach you the Overman. Repent. Only by voting for Obama can you heal. I am on my way.

Ms. Quindlen does so love to knock down straw-man arguments.

Anna I have always been a fan but never mort than this minute. As a 70 yr old white woman I have raised 5 children to appreciate the fact that it is only by a stroke of fate that they do not have to suffer the daily injustice that our brothers and sisters of color do. We will be a blessed nation if we are wise enough to elect a president with the wisdom, intelligence and grace of Barack Obama. God knows we need it. My heart goes out to the likes of LouisianaBB it must be difficult living in such ignorance.

Congratulations on taking the thoughts RIGHT out of my head Ms. Quindlen

I personally don't care if Obama is black, white, or purple with pink polka dots. I just want someone who will be able to bring the United States back to the nation it once was.

I really enjoyed reading your article. You make an interesting point that I as an American of African descent have never considered, the notion of "The Caucasian Card." To be honest I believe adversity can either build character and strength in a human being or cause a person to close themselves off to opportunity and growth in knowledge. In my life I've chosen never to make a point to showcase my "blackness." I've always felt that doing so was silly. When I leave my home every morning it's obvious that I'm a black man. It is disappointing when members of my own race or different races heap their stereotypes or assumptions of who I am and what my background is before meeting me. I grew up in a predominantly white upper middle class neighborhood in the South. My circle of friends are diverse because of my upbringing. I can honestly say from experience at the core we are pretty much the same. I've been witnessed to both the "race card" and "caucasian card" being played. Both are defense mechanisms that protect the ignorance of the person playing the card. I choose not to be ignorant. When I vote in November my decision is not going to be based on race, it will be based on which candidate is going to best lead our country and who can help bridge the divide internationally. I hope the candidates will stop "playing cards" and start addressing the real issues America has to face today and in the future.

The media have been reluctant to face the reality of the anti-Obama vote based strictly on race. Much of the election analysis seeks other reasons why groups of voters will not support Obama. Maybe they suffer from wishful thinking that America has become color blind. Maybe they just want to avoid the ugly truth that tens of millions of white voters will never accept a black man as President. McCain is white; Obama is unwhite. That is all most voters, especially of a certain age, want to know or need to know. In a few generations race might not matter as much, but for now it is the only thing that matters. Obama will lose the elction because he is black. McCain will win because he is white. The media may not like it but "thats the way it is".

I think that MCc Cain will win because people are beginning to see the true Obama after so many flip flopping episodes. He is nothing than a socialist egocentric maniac who will say and do anything to get to the presidency. He has a lack of character and a twisted sense of duty to his country as well as a Jew hater since he was willing to apologized for the US in Berlin out of all places. He is nothing than a fabrication by the communist sleeping cell in the US. OBAMA is a CHANGE that AMERICA CANNOT AFFORD.

    • Posted By: cferns1530 @ 08/11/2008 1:32:37 PM

What it all boils down to is the voter's confidence in choosing the President, based on the VP nomination.

      • Posted By: Berm @ 08/11/2008 2:43:25 PM

Well, Tim, I'm sorry to see you playing the race card. Yours is one reason Obama could never unify the country were he to win. Calling tens of millions of people racist, then expecting them to join you is a tad stupid. Can you see no reason other than race why I won't vote for Obama? If you can't than there is no way for you to persuade me or anyone with my misgivings about Obama to vote for him. Don't be a racist; VOte for Obamais not a very unifying campaign slogan.
