Right on! You told it like it is. Thank you for saying what should be obvious. Race is an issue in the campaign because Senator Obama is obviously black. But that's the only way it should be an issue, for Senator McCain or for any American. The color of a person's skin does not tell you how well someone will do anything, unless you're so prejudiced and believe so much in stereotypes that you can't see beyond either of those. I hope with all my heart that America is better than that - that the voters of America are better tha nthat.

You're exactly one of the reasons that Obama is going to lose in November.
And by the way, Obama didn't play the race card. He played the racist card. Most Americans recognize the difference.

When I saw the title of the article, I thought "the Caucasian Card" was McCain's strong condemnation of the Russian attack and invasion of Georgia as opposed to Obama's wussy response.
What I read was a series of worn-out racial and gender platitudes to defend and justify Obama's use of the race card against McCain, trying to do the same thing he did to Bill Clinton in the primaries. Russia has started a war of conquest, Obama is vacationing in Hawaii and Newsweek is printing irrelevancies!
    Delio.

I'm really not sure what this article was trying to say. I sounds like an apology for Obama playing the race card against McCain like he did against Hillary in the primaries. Yes, its a fact that Obama doesn't look like those President's on the currency, what is not a fact is that (they) McCain are trying to scare people because he doesn't look like them. One can't blame Obama for using the race card as it worked very well for him against Hillary, but one can hardly blame McCain for resisting Obama dealing race from the bottom of the deck because he knows that Obama's next step is to start labeling him and his campaign as racists like Obama did Bill Clinton and Geraldine Ferraro. And Obama's character was built because of he had to struggle against white descrimination and repression. Give me a break........Harvard Law, the U.S. Senate, Nominee for President at 47? Wow......Obama has faced real repression alright, he's right up there with Nelso Mandela. What a silly article!

Bill Clinton didn't say anything racist he said compared an intelligent, well educated and qualified black man to someone a whole generation of well educated, qualified and intelligent black people consider to be a clown and a joke (Jessie Jackson). No black people didn't get mad at bill and call him racist white people called him racist in the name of black folks. Ferraro is not a racist but why did she have to play the Caucasian card she mentioned that Obama was a result of Affirmative action not Obama. She made the case for this article and had realized that she was diminishing Obama in the same way she was diminished as a VP canidate maybe she would have thought twice before she openen her mouth. Affirmative action works for women as well being that they are a protected group. With that in mind couldn't the same be said about Hillary Clinton that if she weren't a woman she wouldn't be where she is today. I think not because both Hillary and Obama are smart enough to handle running America one just has better people.

Yeah better people alright. One votes solely on race, the others select the best candidate for the job.
        White vote for Obama 46%
        Black vote for Obama 95%

        White vote for McCain 48%
        Black vote for McCain 1%

Seems Obama is black enough after all !!!!!!!

Wow, with articles like the above, it's no wonder that subscribership to Newsweek has been plummetting and that advertisers choose to spend their dollars elsewhere. The only candidate bringing up race in this election is.....Barack Obama. The more "journalists" such as Ms. Quindlan try to explain this away, the worse he/they look. Poor article, very weak.

"John McCain, The American president America is been waiting for" That's not the race card? In all the elections I have seen I have never heard anyone advertise themselves as the american america has been waiting for. Coincidental? I think not. This was started by McCain along time ago.

When 88% of blacks supported John Kerry in the 2004 election, it wasn't racism.

So why is it racism when 90% of blacks support Obama in the 2008 election?

Could it be that he's the....wait for it.....DEMOCRATIC candidate?

90% of blacks supported Clinton in the 1992 and 1996 elections.

But it's racism if 90% of blacks support a biracial person. It's not racism if 90% of blacks support a white person, right?

I am black and will not be voting for Obama because , I do not vote on the basis of race. I vote for my country and my pocket book. As an American, I do not trust Barack Hussein Obama. I have created enemies even among some relatives because I have cut the cord years ago and have decided to be an independent and vote on the issues. You need to know that at least 65% of African Americans only vote "Democrat" because their were told that all republicans are evil. About 15% of African Americans have never voted because they do not think that they can change anything. Being an African american, I can tell you that most blacks are voting for Obama just because he is black and Obama has played his card well. Black people are the most racist group there they hate white people for no reason that explained why Oprah chose to back up a black man rather than a woman for the presidency. Don't be foul!!

The Washington Post's David Broder:...It's Particularly A Moment Where John McCain Can Claim To Have Been Prescient.... NBC's DAVID GREGORY: David Broder, is this a 3 a.m. moment for foreign policy for these candidates? WASHINGTON POST's DAVID BRODER: It is and it's particularly a moment where John McCain can claim to have been prescient. Because in his basic foreign policy speech two months ago and in an interview that I did with him last week, he draws a very sharp line when it comes to Russia. He says these people are being aggressive and imperialist. There is no confusion, in his mind, about the character of the Putin-Medvedev government and he is prepared, I think, to make the case that this is a demonstration of exactly what he has been arguing for. (NBC's Meet The Press, 8/10/08)

    NOBAMA!!!

This article should be tilted, "The Elitist Liberal Card". Portray yourself as a victim so the liberal elite will grant you a quota of some sort - first Black President or Woman Commentor at Nesweek. Both Senator Obama and Ms. Quindlen seem to be experts are playing it. Both believe they are entitled to it.

The continued scam being played on voters is that if you don't support Obama, you are racist. You are not allowed to look at experience, past behavior, attitude, nothing. This coming from the press and the far left who have consistently picked and chose what cause they are going to "push" and what group they are going to condemn.

    • Posted By: tc125231 @ 08/10/2008 11:57:13 AM

Actually, no one has said that not supporting Obama is racist. What has been said, even by Republicans such as Andrew Sullivan, is that McCain is trying pretty hard to make sure that anyone who IS racist will vote for him.

So you don't have to be a racist to oppose Obama. Far from it. I didn't vote for him in the primary. However, to support McCain, you had better be able to accept racists as fellow travelers. Because he wants their votes.

      • Posted By: pnkearns @ 08/10/2008 2:59:16 PM

95% or more of Blacks support/vote for Obama. No racism or racists there, eh?

  • Posted By: pnkearns @ 08/10/2008 2:57:39 PM

Minorities and women (the majority) don't play the race/gender card at work? Oh please....
Playing the race card in politics is o.k. as long as you are a minority? Oh please....
It's all right for minorities (and the female majority) to get affirmative action because they eventually succeed at the job?.. never mind the people that are passed over (including minorities passed over for woman quota hires) and could also have done the job? Oh please....

Ms. Quindin got one thing right. The rich (all colors and genders) are not effected. The rich (all colors and genders) also would never give up their job to a minority. They talk the talk, but never walk the walk. They're entitled. Just like the entitled Ms. Quindlin.

    So it's alright to dis

Well said, Anna. I am so tired of this race card business, I could puke. The accusation is meant to minimize the very American experience of millions of people whose lives were very much dictated by the laws of this country. George Bush himself is an affirmative action baby, getting into Yale (and the presidency) by dint of legacy protocols that guarantee admission by inheritance. No doubt if Bush had been black, his administration would have been used as a caveat about the dangers of affirmative action.

A.Q. This is an outstanding article!
Commenters: You are all so passionate about the superficial "qualifications" of these candidates. My wife is gourgeous, but she can't build a house. It's all about the 'process'.
We need someone that can re-build this country and give it back to the people. Someone who'll restore the constitution to it's rightful place, protect us for threats foreign & domestic, stop welfare for big business, help us educate our children, provide health services to all, and cast a vision for a new America we can ALL be proud of. You can choose to build things up - a builder (Obama) or you can choose to tear things down - a demolition man (McCain). I choose to build!

A master piece,an intellectually stimulating reading!!!.
John Mccain is the classical image of the privileged, rich, old money and well connected son of admirals.
A war-hero and coming from an ancient family of admirals; who can dare challenge his outrageous race-baiting and race-hustlings???.
He played the race-card by using Pop tarts like Paris and Britney Spears, that's subliminal racism coded in but not very sophiscated as the media would want us to believe!!.
From the merverick and straight talker; john Mccain has played his ace card, race but the apologetic media wants us to believe it was the victim to blame!!!.
From hillary's "kitchen sink strategy", John Mccain how the race-card is alive and well. All he has to do is pile on and on. So we had to live through paris hilton, britney spears, the messiah, the tire guage, the failure to visit the wounded soldiers in germany, the son of a single mom turned elitist. A celebrity, the chossen one,an elitist, arrogant, out of touch, lack experience and judgement!!!.
How can one individual be endured with all these virtues and vices???.
John mccain , the son of admirals, the grandson of admirals, who never sweated for his education and had to confess in vietnam and break some bones to be a life-long hero and president!!.
Who can challenge him???. Some black upstart senator???.america belongs to who???.
