..,should have mentioned people's daily does have a forum...and it's good.

  • Posted By: histind @ 08/16/2008 7:10:58 PM

Would we even see a comment page like this from xinhua or people's daily news? This is a good educational opportunity for western ignoramuses (which includes myself): read english language chinese news sites to gain a larger sense of scope on world issues. Cross-referencing is also a great news reading technique.

Certainly any sea turtle got a better consicence than Medlie Liu. She's got a black heart and should seek to do some plastic sugery to make herself look more western, in case only the insides is not enough. Her looking so Chinese just disgusts me

      Well said! I second that.

It is one thing to be ignorant, but totally another playing ignorant.

The reason why? How about we expats here feel the Western hypocracy first-hand?!

There is a saying in China, "you can't be a whore and a virgin at the same time". The western elite feels entitled to do what is the best in its interest, yet lecture others not to do the same. Need I say more?

How about invading Iraq five years ago and now calling Russia a Bully? It is fine if you do what you have to do, but please, don't tell me, "When are you going to be as civilized as we are?"

This posture is not innately Western, of course. But for "elites" in the West to say something like what this article says, it just shows how ignorant and general lack of introspection there is in the West right now.

Liu and Hewitt, you really should have mentioned Sayyid Qutb, you morons!

Jingoist or not, Tibet independence has zero support among 1.3 billion people. Westerners tasted for the first time the fury of ordinary Chinese athis spring, and now they're wining about it, looking for all kinds of excuses to trash the Chinese people and their determination to protect national sovereignty. But math is math. Try provoke 1.3 billion people with nukes and that'll be the last time you try anything. It's simply not the 19th century any more when the West could walk over China in whichever fashion they liked. Wake up.

I have studied, and then worked in Europe for over 20 years, and I must say that I was entirely shocked, and hurt, by the performance of Mass Media and Governments of West Europe in recent months.

They were shameless to entirely distort the reality about what were happening in Tibet during the April and May months, and about the demos and anti-demo in regards Tibet, and they were lying all the time! If this is what they claimed democratic politicians and free press, then it is not what we appreciate, not at all.

It is all too obvious that their goal is to rip Tibet from China. Although that is not something glorious (vicious I would say), the really weird thing is they have tried to achieve it by spreading false news and distort the reality in China and Tibet by 100%: When a gangful Tibetans suddenly burned several shops and killed a few people in Tibet, they claimed that all Tibetans were against Chinese ???occupation??? because ???they were persecuted by China all the Time???, although similar thing is happening all the time In Spain, and France and Briton. A few demonstrators against China here and there will always rouse their enormous interests whereas 10 thousands demonstrators supporting the Torch trip towards in many European and USA cities is NEVER noticed, and not reported at all.

It this so call the justice and free-press? It???s pure SHAMELESS and disgusting! I simply don't understand how could they behave like that, and still expect that they will be liked and respected by Chinese, whether inside or out side the Chinese border.

As I read the article, I could understand why we in the United States and the West are so disliked by the Chinese (among others). The attitude is that a society is not really "free" unless it is a carbon copy of ours. I'm not knocking the many freedoms we have here -- I'm very grateful that I live in the US. However, that doesn't mean that everyone should want to the live the same life as I do or as we in the West do. It's just plain old patronizing, and no wonder many in China choose a hyper-nationalism in response. I'm not thirlled with how China deals with many things, including Tibet. But the U.S. IS NOT perfrect -- think of New Orleans, as just one example.

There is one thing you didnot analyse in this article: your attitude towards the Chinese and its emergence as a big poweer which has shun most of the overseas Chinese elite! Your attitude towards Chinese is bad, too bad! When I read articles on China, it's bad news. Then why it is coming back into the global society? Why do most of the Chines people appreciate thear leaders?I really do hope that you would do one thing: Try your best to say something unbiased about the change that is taking place in China. Change thyself a bit to embrace an emerging Orient country, or there will be another enemy when you deem her as an enemy!

After reading some of these threads I see there is hatred on both sides. I suppose this is normal. Given that most people either don't understand forigen relations or don't want to admit that both the US and China lay in questionable beds when trying to aquire oil or other resources. I for one love the fact that China is proud of themselves and wants to modernize. I admit I don't fully understand the Tibet story and little about the Tiwan story save they did not want to be communist after Mao. But I think once China has emerged as a great power they can work this out with those area's. I hope the US can work out our own energy independance and just leave the Middle East alone and let them fight themselves with sticks or something. And wouln't it be nice if China and the US both got together and kicked Africa in the butt and got it straighned out. Maybe I am reaching too far but as an Amercian I say go China and Go US. :)

I used to be a liberal extremist. I had hated communist for everything before I left China and entered UC-Berkeley in 2001. Fortunately, CNN and Fox converted me into a nationalist after I stayed in US for seven years. Why??? It???s because that western media are doing whatever they can to spread hatred towards China and Chinese including telling lies.
    1. Even PBS is spreading the rumor that Han Chinese had killed 1.2 million Tibetans from 1950s to 1970s. Is it difficult to do little research about the population of Tibetan? Just check Wiki, you will find out that Tibetan population was 1.19 million in 1950. Yet, there are more than 6 millions Tibetans living on the Great Tibetan Plateau in 2008. How could it be possible????
    2. Americans failed to stop Iraqis from killing each other even though they have huge military presence in Iraq after the invasions for oil. Americans never asked Saudi government to abandon authoritarianism even though they bought A LOT of oil from Saudi. American never succeeded in pressurizing Chinese government from opening its internet great wall even though they purchased more Chinese products than any other country. However, Americans think they have the moral authority to condemn China for buying oil from Sudan. Isn???t this double standard and hypocritical? At least we paid a heavy price for oil instead of invading other country for oil!!

Actually I don't think westernized is a good way to describe modern Chinese people, or overseas Chinese students. I prefer to think myself belongs to a MODERNIZED group. ---When you use "westernized", you take the West 's superior and dominance as granted, how could people from other parts of the world be happy about that??

Vdemont, well said. I hope all Americans can think like you but I am sure you are the minority here.

The Tibet riot and the coverage of the issue and the constant attacks on the Olympics in the west seriously damaged the image of western press among the Chinese elites. It's a very bad move that push the pro-west population in China to become radicals. The west, especially the western press has an intense hate about China. They refuse to see the achievements Chinese have made in just 20 years and refuse to recognize their hard work of putting the Olympics together. I guess this is a good thing that the most modern citizens in China is not following the west anymore. Since the Chinese will be Chinese, not some fantasized version of democratic Russia or Iraq.

I'll tell you why this is happening: Because these people come here and experience racism, discrimination, and glass-ceilings. They return to China because they are treated with disrespect here. There is no future for Asian-Americans in the U.S. An aspiring young male Asian-American actor cannot succeed in Hollywood because they do not cast Asian-American protagonists the same way they would shun blacks earlier in the century. The highly educated and capable business and tech grads bump into glass ceilings when old white boys' circles would rather promote a less capable white person over them rather than bring them into the fold. Now these so-called 'experts' talk about "jingoistic" phenomena as if it's really so difficult to understand. No Chinese man wants to stay in a country where the only Chinese-American 'celebrity' allowed by the white American public that controls the media is William Hung, a purposefully selected racial stereotype replete with buck-teeth, accent, and slanty eyes. Williman Hung is not what most Chinese people look like, but he is what most white-Americans want to see; he is the prototypical racial stereotype like the blackfaces of yesterday. Chinese-Americans are the new blacks. It's no wonder that as they see China rising, they feel more close to home than those that stayed behind: Because those that stayed only see the good side of America through Hollywood films, and haven't experienced the failure of American society to integrate what could have been a new generation of proud and thus patriotic Americans. Our racism is what is driving them back home, and our persistent intent to paint all Chinese people and China with a negative brush in the media by dumping on everything Chinese, from Tianamen which occurred twenty years ago, to the fact that they did some lip-syncing in the opening ceremonies of the Olympics, is like slapping these people over and over again, and driving them into the ground. No American would tolerate that regardless of their race or origin. You simply can't treat people poorly and expect them to turn around and treat you well. So all these sociologists can analyze this situation using complex analogies, but the answer to this is really not difficult to understand.

What about Yao Ming, Michael Chang, Lang Lang, Yoyo Ma, or Jackie Chan, to name just a few more positive male celebrities? I hardly think that William Hung is what most Americans want to see in a Chinese man! While it's true that most Americans have a shallow, even unrealistic, understanding of modern China (either pluses or minuses), you overstate the case. Many Chinese people have found opportunities for educational, business, and personal satisfaction in the USA, in a wide variety of fields / disciplines, despite the challenges of a foreign culture / language, immigration red tape, etc..

Yes we do hate the West. The reason is not as this so-called expert says, it's because when you're poor and looking at a rich country, the West is an Oasis. When you arrive and you see the racism, prejudice and dirty underbelly of Westerners, you want China to be better than that. Chinese expatriots know that the West never did anything good for China and that it's an uphill struggle against your false values.

Melinda Liu would have no job and lost her usefulness if she doesn't continue to write things critical to China and Chinese people. I don't really care about such stupid and inane comments from her. Maybe she need the money by selling her soul. I am proud about my own heritage and woudl say this: let those without sin cast the first stone. Now Russians are learning fast from the US by sending army to invade another country.

I have the same feeling for this Melinda Liu.
