Surprise! Jingoistic? The Chinese do seem like us after all.

It's not that these overseas mainland Chinese students are anti-western. They are seeing both sides of the coin, having experienced the reality at their homeland and confronting the biased westerners who have never been to China. It would seem to them that there is urgency for the much work needing to be done in China to disprove the westerner's stereotype when referencing China to traditional Manchurian China or Communist China that has been ingrained into their mind by media whenever Westerner???s think of China. China is not just Han Chinese it is a culmination of a lot of ethnicities. Hypothetically any academic student would be disgusted of the ignorance of the people who they meet. It's true in the West that a lot of people are ignorant because of complacency because they take everything for granted and not realize that in real life it's much more complicated than it seems. Why are there so many obese people on welfare? Why is there such a great disturbance in societal values from the past like homosexuals and rancor of the religious conservatives? With societal issues and lack of civility even the West isn???t perfect that could also be a reason why many mainland Chinese students could be turned off to the Western snobbery and see them as hypocrites.

If a Westernized person dislike the West, then he is not Westernized. Isn't this obvious? Am I the only one notice this? Does every one become westernized if he lived in the West for a while?

Any Chinese that lives abroad, be they Overseas Chinese or hai gui, would feel resentful whenever they read the anti-China reports that the Western press frequently dishes out. 65% of the people in the UK/USA thinks the Chinese government is an oppressive one, while 85% of the Chinese people thinks their own government is doing a good job. Now, where did the people in the UK/USA get their opinion from? Their own biased and manipulative "free press" ! I feel the entrenched anti-China bias is mainly due to these 3 developments: the 1949 communist victory, the incorporation of Tibet back to China, and the 1989 Tienanmen incident.

China was never ever dominated by any western powers for more than a mere 100 years. Do not say China had been discriminated FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS. No Hundreds of years please, only less than 100 years. On the other hand it is more true to say that China wielded Imperial 5000 before the East India Company was founded.

Don't exaggerate the domination of China by the west. Mark my word in 10 years' time Mainland and our province of Taiwan will merge whether the rest of the world wants it or not; then the strength of the People's Republic of China will double in 10 years.

You mean that African Americans are not the only ethnic group to be discriminated against in the history of the world? Wow, what an eye opener!! To hear the media tell the story, it has only been one single group in the history of the world that has had to suffer the pain of discrimination. This is 'front page' information that should be disseminated as soon as possible.

It is superficial to stamp an anti-west label upon Chinese. After Jews migrated into China and Europe, respectively, thousands of years ago, European Jews have always been discriminated by native Europeans whereas Chines Jews were absorbed into the huge Chinese gene pool through inter-marriage. It is fair to say that most Chinese are selective; they accept some western culture (eg, science, technology, law, etc.) and hate some side effects associated with it (pollution, materialism, might is right, slavary, etc.).

Nations rise up against Nations. It is foretold and is happening, China is anti-Western and the West is a loose group of liberals.

Excellent observation from Prof. David Zweig and Jim MacGregor, however the analysis is very shallow and poor. Needs more home work.

I'm sure the term "red Indian" is offensive to us Sioux as "yellow Chinese" is to you. Both America and China have both done horrible things -from The trail of Tears to the Red Guard in the Cultural Revolution so please don't point the finger of some new found nationalistic righteousness.
