To brygiel: We WERE manintaining vigilance. An FBI agent in Minnesota noticed the pattern of flight lessons and started to investigate. She was ordered to stop. The only diligence we need right now is in how we pick our friends, particularly if they are really our worst enemies. And we're not allowed to talk about it. Know anything about a taboo? In this case, it's a subject that cannot be discussed and certainly not criticized. This kind of paralysis is known elsewhere in biology as parasitic inhibition of host defenses. Incidentally, read "1491" for an excellent description of the effects of smallpox in a naive population. Young Americans are a naive population. Smallpox still exists. It exists in weapons laboratories in Russia and the United States. Since it exists in the United States it probably now exists elsewhere as well. The next major attack on the United States could be smallpox. Our first born, but also our second and third born children will be taken by this angel of death. If it were even a little less mobile or deadly, there might not be a United States, just a number of embattled Euro colonies surrounded by the aboriginal cultures holding them at bay. We need to immunize our children. Bush and anyone associated with him by party would use this weapon. But it's your call.

To add to knemmers comment, what you have failed to realize in your own data, is that ONLY 1.5 million of the border crossing car's occupants had to answer a few extra questions and then be on their way, as opposed to the 270 MILLION vehicles that actually passed through those check points. How much longer would that have made the border transit wait time be? How inconvenient would that have been for ALL of us? 1.5 million sounds like a lot but when you're referring to a continent the size of North America, keep your statistics in perspective.

Perhaps this equipment deters "actual terrorists" from attempting to pass through the border. Officers conducting secondary inspections are well prepared for the medical reasons of an alert, and in most cases, demonstrate the appripriate sensitivity. Is it better to have no sensors at all? If CBP did not have this equipment, yet knew it existed, would you not be writing this article in criticism of their inability to prevent terrorists from bringing nuclear or radiological material into the country? There is always a down side to every solution. You hope to choose the lesser of two evils. These individuals who are being sent for secondary inspections are not being detained, arrested or even harassed, but instead answer a few additional questions, and can be on their way. Stop trying to make an issue out of nothing.
