Upon reading the cover story I thought I would have a one word response..''nothing"- But to be fair, make it 2 words ''not much". Bush is the oops President, we all mistakes, but ours are not so costly. Do overs do not get it done, soon (thankfully) 2 more words will apply--- "He' s gone". Maybe then America has a chance to return to being the country it once was

    Hello Jon Meacham!

You asked for comments on the Bush cover. The story tackled the many complexities of Bush's foreign policy. How about doing another Bush cover on his domestic policy? What did Bush get right for us U.S. citizens here on our own soil? The criticality to our nation of Bush's foreign policy is not to be trivialized, but I have a hunch that average American citizens would like to know the state of our domestic affairs. One need only venture out into the streets, in any town large or small across our great country, to see that abundance and excess live right next door to poverty and hopelessness. Food, energy, and gas prices. Unemployment rates. Natural disasters. I think it would make a great story - one of the last ones for Mr. Bush's presidency and one which we Americans would be eager to read. Thank you and God Bless America!

Even though I admire and respect Fareed Zakaria's intelligence, I don't agree that it was Bush who got anything right. Bush's life has been a series of failures with subsequent rescues by powerful family connections, culminating in a disastrous presidnecy. Yes, the administration's policies have changed, but I believe the changes are due not to Bush who seems incapable of rational thought, but to yet another rescue squad trying desparately to salvage the tragic Bush legacy. Bush's lies and incompetance have led to hundreds of thousands of deaths, mutilations and destitute people in the destroyed country of Iraq. Bush has no redeeming qualities.

    Mr Meacham:

You are cordially invited to our blog: Citizens Against ProObama Media Bias.

We are quite fond of NEWSWEEK's words, as they provide textbook examples to future journalists on how to avoid the pratfalls of bias and loss of journalistic integrity. The evidence itself will speak to how propaganda has influenced the most important and historic presidential election in modern history.

We are regular citizens. Our blog is not associated with any political party, candidate or organization. No one is benefiting financially. We were--and continue to be--appalled at the level pro-Obama media bias, so we began compiling video and print evidence of it.

Feel free to invite the rest of your colleagues--we have extended personal invitations to Mssr Alter and Fineman. As Editor of NEWSWEEK, I am sure you are most interested in what your readers think of your writer's words.

The media parses Obama's every word and every action. Meanwhile, McCain gets a free pass -- his policies don't add up (equal bigger deficits which equals devalued dollar which equals even higher gas prices and weakened US influence) and he says outrageous and often sexist things. If the McCain supporters don't like all the Obama talk, why do even the McCain ads and McCain speeches constantly reference Obama rather than explain what McCain's policies actually are?

      • Posted By: KellyBrowning @ 08/14/2008 1:34:12 PM

Mr. or Ms. Mills: McCain does NOT get a free pass. BTW, what exactly ARE Obama's policies? Does he really have any? Why is it that he won't go on the O'Reilly Factor or Sean Hannity's radio or TV show? Can he not face them, or is he only comfortable with his adoring fans (Mr. Alter included, of course)?

ps. Did I miss Alter's apology to KellyB? You do know she was kicked off because of his article?

    • Posted By: KellyBrowning @ 08/14/2008 1:28:22 PM

No. I still haven't received an apology from Mr. Alter. Is there a way I can receive permission to join your new blog? I'm back on "Poleftico", but am tired of the Obama moon-bats.

i agree with s mills. the bushies and mccain are clinging for all their worth on to the "surge" as proof of their war leadership. ignoring the fact that bush declared , "mission accomplished" years ago( watch oberman for exact count). and ignoring their MANY blundes and lies in iraq. it is time to make CATCH-22 required reading and viewing. my choice to play Milo- dick cheney. this war has been CATCH -22 brought to life! and the word s mills is surching for is - fasism.
this administration has said it is exporting democracy but nothing is further from the truth. the whole GOP are crypto-facist and need to be turned out of office. and sent to the political wilderness. who let these neo-cons out of the basement anyway?

Improved tactics does not make the Bush policy right. The Bush policy is not exporting democracy. It is exporting the same extreme form of privatization that we are seeing domestically. That is privatization to the extent that even government and war are run for profit. This is not free-market democracy, it encourages war and it will never be right. The correct policy for spreading democracy would be a much more balanced approach where the ultimate goal is not complete privatization (which as we see does not produce real wealth) but a productive balance between government and the private sector that rewards both investment and work and creates real wealth and stability for all.

I cannot rationalize away the wrongs this president and his people have committed. The list is too long, to much of a burden. Some of these wrongs are still playing out today, and he is still trying to affect policy in ways that are detrimental to our well-being. Yesterday, I read of how he is redfining the endangered species regulations. His attorney general is declining to fully recognize the wrongs that have been committed. We are not the country we used to be, because of him. Sorry, whatever last minute bandages he will apply to these wounds, the scar of 8 years of bad policy remains.

my reaction to this week's cover (see the editor's desk): i taped it to the open toilet set, with a note "aim here."

The fact that Bush presided over the national debt's increasing from 5.7 to almost 10 trillion will place
him on the list of the worst presidents.
