I don't think we are fascinated- but it is news. Here is a man- running on his virtue of a stand-up guy, who was cheating. Plus, it looks like he was also using campaign money to pay off his mistress. Then, when he does get caught, he runs. Yeah, this is the guy that should have been president. Makes a decision and hides in the can. What a guy. The affair is our business in the sense he was running for president- if he is so stupid in his choices, then we don't need him making other decisions.
You are correct that humans do make mistakes- and nobody is perfect- but that doesn't mean there aren't consequences for those decisions. Maybe he'll learn a little humility- get his life together and move on. Hopefully it won't be in the courtroom or politics- maybe it will be on being a better husband and father. Be a better role model for his daughters- so they will make good decisions about the men they include in their lives.

"Two Words, Charley ...Therapy!" (Courtsey...Tony...from "So I Married an Axe Murderer!"

So let me get this logic of yours worked out here, Genius...You wouldn't trust a man who dips his wick in some strange trim...let alone imagine that he could ever be moral enough to raise his own daughters? But ...have you checked upon the 'moral' lifestyle of your Great Leader? Perhaps if you did, you would find that in addition to being a brittle drunk and cokehead for the better part of his young adult life, while brave men got drafted and died to the tune of almost 60,000...with 1,500,000 wounded in either body or mind from the Original War that Started From Lies (You can include John MaCain in there, too)...or both...All because they had no choice. but to serve. Mewanwhile, at the same time all of this was going on, your superbly unqualified 'moral' leader was hiding out, stateside, in a National Guard Armory...dutifully guarding a barbeque pit and getting smashed out of his less than nimble mind each and every chance he could ...courtesy of a "Get Out of Going to Viet Nam FREE" Card he got from his Daddy (Say....Didn't he mention once that the reason he lead us into a busted war of choice...he mentioned something about OBL..."You know....he tried to kill my Daddy..." Here is a thought...why don't you take amoment to print out all of this self-rightous indignation you've writrten on some crisp, 24 Lb paper...and after rolling all your nonsensical ideas about what constitutes 'morality' into a nice, tight tube...you can enthusiastically pound it up inside that same special place where the Sun Don't Shine and where you store what passes for your brains? Hmmmmm? Yeah...You go right on ahead and do that now...

Character only matters when it's not a Democrat, who cares about his sex life? I guess we can say the same thing about drug addiction, and child porn then. Let's just put anyone in the office but God forbid we put someone with those character issues in as CEO of Mattel.

Character...Schmarakter...What the hell are you talking about...? That's the trouble with all you Right -Wing WingNuts...You are all so busy.... Compulsively working on your sexual repression and insisting on ours, that you can't hear the sound of the bodies hitting the dirty desert sands from an illegal war of aggression begun with the blessings of your supposedly Moral Majority Leaders by starting a War of Choice and eating the Seed Corn of latest crop of Our Brave Young Americans who are the Best Soldiers from the Greatest Country to ever exist on this Earth...and meanwhilw all you Flag-Waving, Chest- Pounding Closet Queens are pointing your fingers at the rest of us (and your peckers at each other... on the sly), You would morons have layed waste to the youth of our land in some middle eastern cat-box on behalf of a bunch of in-bred muppets who have so much money....they can buy and build their own islands, for Christ's Sake!.....And all this happens on the backs of kids who just may get killed in Iraq and soon...perhaps even Iran...before they can experience what it feels like to get decently laid before you ensure they are indecently dead! You people make me sick! Stop The War In Iraq...Elect Barack!!!

I did a little googling and this explanation as to what type of person might cheat on their spouse. Im thinking that Obama better (continue to?) behave himself moving forward with the nation knowing that he has at least 2 of the 3 characteristics defined below that can lead to adultery by a mate. Although how could we know about the 3rd characteristic being applicable. . . . unless Michelle shared that with us. Lol.

So... JAFURD (Just Another F*c**d Up Republican Drone)...You did a little "Googling" on the subject of the psychological profile of the kind of person that would indulge in infidelity, Huh? That's funny I just did a little "Googling" on my own concerning the type of IGM (Inferior Genetic Material) argueably called a person and what kind of persons would feel complelled to do a little "Googling" on the kind of person that would indulge in infidelity. Here is what I came up with:

"This is a JAFURD. This type of person is invariably a 'man" (the term is being used loosely here, of course) who gets paid by the RNC to lurk around in blogs under the guise of giving so much helpful information, while holding a penis the size of a party olive in one hand and getting his jollies with the other hand...mousing, typing "Googling" and lying...using the the chapter and verse of OTHER JAFURD writers, who represents the worst of our American Society.

      Nice Try...Jackass

McKaylaos, you were not the only one that found this to be a very boring article, and, ratehr diappointing. Let's sum this story up; sneaky reporter pumps flake for political dirt and gets nothing much. This is not a story.

This would-be journalist had better hope he doesn't open the front door to his home/apt some night and find a big pot of "Boiling Hairy White Rabbit" cooking feverishly away on the top of his stove after hooking up with this insane witch... (Hmmmm...Better get out that "Gracie Jiu-Jitsu" DVD and dust it off...Maybe... bone up on a few escape moves???)

Having lived in NC and worked in proximity to JE, this whole episode points up whats been apparent to me for some time : John Edwards is a Rube, a small town boy from Nowhere NC, educated at NC State and then off to UNC Chapel Hill for Law School, probably the first place he ever encountered the wider world. from there it was working in Raleigh NC as a trial lawyer (not exactly the center of the universe in the 80s).

In short, at heart, JE is still a small town boy dazzled by the big city. How else can you explain him falling for the bleached-blonde spouting the New age Gandhi nonsense? How stupid do you have to be to not see thru her speil? Whats frightening is that this small town hick with money and looks could have risen so far so fast and could be in a position to be admired by millions.

    • Posted By: nc teacher @ 08/13/2008 10:50:12 AM

And I'm guessing you are super wonderful, Mr. Blow, with no mistakes or sins to your name. Having lived all my life in NC, in large towns and small, I personally take offense to your comments about JE and NC. I've found that it offen doesn't matter so much where you move to, it's where you move from that makes some people think they are superior, you know bringing all those wonderful ideas (and people) from where you used to live. I don't think JE's sins are only found in small town NC. Voting for McCain, are you? Now there's a perfect guy!

      • Posted By: JoeDoaks @ 08/13/2008 11:52:08 PM

Not to worry NCTeacher... What you can draw from this comment is that this guy wishes he could BE John Edwards ...even for just one day. Then he could feel what it is like to be an attractive, intelligent, rich and accomplished family man (Yup...That's right... John Edwards has ALWAYS been a decent, honorable and loving family man) If this guy was man enough to be able to stand in John Edwards' shoes... for just a little while ...You know...to feel what it was like for him to lose a beloved son at such a young age....to feel what was like to hear the doctor tell your wife that she has breast cancer...to go to court and fight for the common man, time and again... against big money and against big insurance and...Win... Perhaps if he only had the chance to do this...then he could shed his own sense of being the RUBE that he sees in himself, but insists upon reflecting his lack of self-esteem upon John Edwards. These are just manifestations of his envy and jealousy over John Edwards...Don't mind him, dear.

      • Posted By: varacefan @ 08/13/2008 4:15:30 PM

Don't you ever get tired of making excuses for these people? Nobody is perfect I understand that. But, I'm sorry if my standards are higher for our leaders than yours appears to be. I figure if he can lie to his wife and kids lying to me or some other citizen whould not be hard at all. Not only that , but once caught he continued to dance around the truth and shape it to make him look more positive. I'd like to see you clowns express these same views with your wife in the room. Somehow I don't think they would see it the same as their loving husband does. Get real! The guys a jerk!!!

        • Posted By: nc teacher @ 08/13/2008 6:05:39 PM

I'm not making excuses for Edwards, but this didn't happen because he grew up, and remained, in NC. That was an uncalled for attack on a problem that has no boundaries within a state, country,or political party. Neither can you generalize by race, sex, or financial status..

Joe Doaks....you ar ONE ANGRY MAN!!! And to expect a journalist (using term extremely loosley here) to become the conscience of this ego-maniac is beyond fool hearty. You just kind of sound like a die-hard Edwards fan who got called on all of those sharp tongued, fin ger pointing tirades you used to do explaining to anyone who would listen why your candidate (Johnny New Age Babe Magnet) was far more moral than any stinking Republican. John screwed you too, and all of his other followers and supporters who invested money and time into his campaign, and THE VWHOLE TIME he knew he was blasting the sheets with this twit. UNBELIEVABLE!!!! You and him both. Take a chill pill, and indeed....step away from the crack pipe.

You can bet that when I see your lies and innuendos all over the place....I will make a point of revealing that you really are a JAFURD (Just Another F*c***g Republican Drone) masquerading in the guise of an Independent voter, while trying to pour out the evil unction of the RNC's rhetoric into the sleeping minds of the unsuspecting. I find you so predictable and jejune when you try to disparage my corrections by simply making comments about..."he's angry...I'm writing him off..." without ever coming back and either denying the truth of your deception and making logical counterpoint arguments to my observations about. No...you won't do that because you know that the checks that come from the RNC to you each week for basically lurking in here like a cancer on America ...would suddenly stop...LOL... Come on Pal... Hardly angry, my spamming friend...I will confess to being upset with Newsweek allowing this idiot to helm the ship of their front page story and straight away, dashing the vessel on the rocks and shoals of this cheap gutter drivel about some insane woman stalking and trying to bring down an otherwise honoraable man. Where are all the stories about how many of our wounded veterans cannot get decent hospital and health care? What about the dwindling and what looks like ever-evaporating constitutional rights that those in power have taken from us all? What about the problem of our kids in the military having to ride around waiting to get blown up by buried IEDs while driving inside tin-can-thin 'armored' Humvees? But no...we have to be subjected to the drivel of a guy who wants to write about a crazy woman stalking John Edwards...Are you kidding me? THOSE are this issues we should be reading about from this so-called journalist! As for my being in support of John Edwards? Sorry, Buttercup... Barack Obama gets my vote and I will cheer him when he takes the oath of office to become the next president of these United States! You should be as outraged as I am about the things that REALLY matter to all Americans...By the By...making 'crack-pipe' jokes? That is the most profound closing argument you could come up with? Let's have "More Meat...Less Spam" in your argument, pal. (paraphrase from: Hamlet's Mother to Laertes' Dad from .Hamlet...by William Shakespeare, Esq. :)

Many of the people commenting on this article scare me. There is so much anger over someone else's problem. Believe it or not, what John Edwards or Elizabeth do in their personal lives has very little to do with you. Let it go, Focus on those actions of our duly-elected officials that actually make your life harder and threaten the future of your children. If adultery posed that big a threat, the people of the world would have destroyed themselves long ago.

    • Posted By: klm34 @ 08/13/2008 1:43:43 PM

And why are you commenting? It is not just the adultery issue, but the standards of an elected official that he has violated by his own actions, which do trickle down and effect everyone in some form or fashion.

      • Posted By: AskPlus @ 08/13/2008 2:55:02 PM

Not really. If a closet check was done, I'd bet most have more skeletons than the average citizen. There was a book by a PhD. Hellerman that highlighted the kind of mind and emotions needed to become a politician. It highlighted the appreciation and power drive needs. It's seems to be a double-edged sword. It killed the Clinton's and gave Mr. Reagan credence.

        • Posted By: sharenews @ 08/13/2008 4:20:18 PM

Killed the Clintons? After Bills first term, and the ongoing talk of his adulterous affairs, if it killed him he would not have been able to run another 4 years, and thank goodness he did cuz he left the White House with a 65% likability factor for the job he did over the 8 years. Then of course there is Hillary who was able to run for President and lose to Obama be a minimal amt of points. Obama squeeked by and that was with full bias of the DNC and the MSM solely on his side.

As for the Edwards affair, I think it is up to John and his wife to work thru the healing process, but the adjultery committed here may in fact trickle down to others in some capacity, especially those that were supporting him during his campaign race with donations which, at this point , is being investigated due to all the monies that went into supporting Ms Hunter over the past few years (her made up job, her multiple relocations to various houses, lastly in a gated community at one point to hide the baby factor that is part of this whole mix). Either way, what a mess. Only pray the Edwards will work things out and she will be able to enjoy her life as long as she can after this whole scandal.

Because of the way your post came across I almost didn't what to give you credence for having a good point that could be well taken.......if it had been presented in the right way.

This "news" is such a non-issue right now. Personally I am worried about a hell of a lot more things in the world, than reading about yet another politician involved in an extra-marital affair. Who cares?

    • Posted By: sharenews @ 08/13/2008 8:16:38 PM

. . . no news? You are right, unless you happened to be an Edwards supporter during the primaries and donated monies to his campaign. I say this cuz he is now being investigated to see where all the monies came from to support this woman in 2006 and 2007 that he met in a bar, had an affair with, gave her a madeup job she was not qualified to do, relocated her numerous times in residences, with one of those locations being in a 11million gated community to hide out with the baby bump or the actual baby (not sure which). Not news for me, (albeit is very surprising as I liked the guy) cuz I supported Hillary in the primaries. If I were an Edwards supporter, though, I would want to know where that money trail goes , which of course is now being investigated fully. Guess we will just have to stay tuned. Very sad for the wife and kids especially.

Hey JAFURD (Just Another F*c**g Republican Drone) You are not fooling anyone...Since when did you and all the other idiots who take your position arrogate to yourselves the right to decide the angle of the moral compass in America? As paid Republican Blog Lurker, you have this very same conspiracy garbage cut and pasted all over this blog and the only purpose you have in doing this is to muddy the waters and drag the Edwards family through some ditch (and of course, lets include the DNC that you keep trying to emphasize with innuendo and suggestion). My considered opinion is that all you lying, sneaking scumbags that lurk in here as fence-sitting, right wingers in sheeps clothing can All Go Take A Fying F**k at the Moon! This crap stinks to high heaven of Rovian Republican Tricks. You want to go on a 'Money Hunt$$$"...? ok so she flirts with married men and has an "idea" to seek married men to commit adultery with to "rescue" them? She is looking for someone to go to Hell with her?? She i not just a whore, but the Devil! I bet her first marriage was because he cheated on her and she is trying to get even with women. What a poor example for the baby she is bringing into this world! I am a teacher, I have had too many kids emotionally suffer from immoral parents such is this one. And as a single woman, I stay away from married men. That is just so wrong!

    • Posted By: Lilium @ 08/13/2008 1:07:10 AM

As a centrist, Christian woman in a faithful marriage of nearly 17 years, I am grateful to single women with morals like yours. There are far too many "Real Hunters" out there, and too many people (not just men) who are receptive to their poisonous charms. It all comes down to selfishness, and a lack of consideration for others. This propesity is prevalent in society, but it is especially unforgivable when it is one's spouse and children - the people one should care the most about - who suffer when someone cannot control their sexual urges.

      • Posted By: JoeDoaks @ 08/13/2008 8:39:06 PM

(continued from part 1 of 2)

Hopefully, many of them are fortunate enough not to have partners who live in the fantasy world and the threat of being terminated after failing to live up to the absolute perfection that marriage lays claim to between both parties. Realistically, this presents married people with impossible conflicts and choices, for whatever reasons this happens. But in the end, what may be more important to such people is not that these things occur...but rather what all the parties involved manage to do to put things right. Perhaps that is the ultimate test of what it means for one person to love another and two people to give each other understanding and forgiveness. ...You know...like the kind of forgiveness that Jesus Christ always talked about? But I digress... So...getting back to your personal circumstance with your own husband... after he 'tells you the truth'...if it turns out to be anything other than what you expected and relied upon to be so hard on the rest of the world...look down at the stone you have been clutching so tightly in the palm of your tiny hand for the last seventeen years in anticipation of hurling at all the other sinners... and let it fall to the ground...."Judge Not...Lest ...Ye... Be Judged...!!!

      • Posted By: JoeDoaks @ 08/13/2008 8:38:18 PM

They "innocent women and children...etc..." you mention who suffer...generally wind up enduring these recriminations external to their own family members....instead ...finding themselves glued like so many insects to that glass slide the self-righteous so enjoy sliding under that social microscopes and made to feel that way because so many pompous, celibate and self-important people believe it their "Duty" to stick their pointy little noses into the private business of others and inflict their own personal morality upon these sad folk with their woolly ideas about these matters...dreamed up inside all those narrow-minded, pointy little heads. Here something for you to ruminate upon and then actually try...Go ahead...I dare you... Tonight...Sit your Old Man down on the couch and look him dead in the eyes and ask him the question you have always taken for granted but never had enough courage: "Honey...over the last seventeen years of our sacred marriage...have you ever strayed?" Now...before you do this, you had better really think about whether you want to know the truth...because after you surprise him with this sudden inquiry, he may honestly tell you what you don't really want to know...So you better be sure before you ask the man this question. If you decide to proceed...watch this guy very closely then, my dear...because if that poor lad should squirm in the least while you poke and point the power of that question right at him...even with his denials of any notions of infidelity...you may have to re-visit all your pompous notions you now hold out so accusingly against the infidelity many people engage in, absent any understanding or forgiveness for their unpredictable lives. Life is complicated by the fact that people who marry neither get everything they need from one another to be completely or permanently fulfilled, nor do they find themselves instantly transported to a marriage vacuum, devoid of any and all human interactions. People are flawed...all of us...even you Lady and perhaps even your Old Man and they often can and must and will interact with others and make intimate connections with other people for one reason or another...and stray. I doubt that many of them that have either told a person they loved or been told by that person of such infidelity and not found themselves alone in the dark, praying for forgiveness and repentance and strength in order to salvage their lives and relationships with one another. (continued....)

Heres something I found for an explanation that makes sense. Obama better watch out, though, cuz he has at least 2 out of the 3 characteristics associated with a man straying from his wife. Only Michelle knows if the 3rd characteristic applies. LOL.

What we have come to know posthumously about the personal conduct of many of history's most extraordinary political leaders suggests that a combination of CHARISMATIC PERSONALITY, a drive to attain POWER, and SEXUAL COMPULSIVITY is a common pattern among heads of state.

Yes Jud,ccrum, I have asked the same question here and no one has been able to explain it well...Narcissism comes pretty close though.

It saddens me that this is considered news. There are so many stories out there that partain to our current situation (can you say the economy, food shortages, water shortages, polution, the sorry state of the American Educational System, our government, war, pestulance, desease not to mention the eventual extinction of mankind? Oh yeah, gas prices). I find it interesting that our main source of education and entertainment comes from remote human interest stories related to our politicians and celebs. Do we really want or need to understand the details of other people's private lives, especially their sex lives! For most of us, sitting in a bar next to a friend that tells us of the affair he is having would get a rather cold, "spare me the details!" After the debacle surrounding the present administration, shouldn't we be more concerned with who will run the country in January. I am quite distressed that stories like this, going on for more than four days now, capture our headlines and serve little more than a distraction from what we should be paying attention to. I've been out of country for the last eleven years but find that our citizenry is leading Enquirer kind of lives. We seem to be more interested in who's doing who rather than what we should be doing for ourselves and the world.

If you can't trust politicians to do the right thing by the ones they profess to love how can you trust them to do right by the voters who are essentially strangers to them.

Sorry klm, if I offended you, but how I feel is how I feel. Could I have worded it better. Probably. However, it does give me pause that so much energy in this country is wasted on the least important things. i am not frightened if people voice strong opinions regarding injustices foisted upon us by people we have trusted to perserve and defend this nation. That makes me want to applaud them. The best thing about being an American, in my opinion, is free speech, so I am not putting anyone down for what they say, but sometimes I feel the need to comment.

Thank you for your kind consideration regarding my feelings and I do agree with you totally, in this post and your last. :~)

What is the point of this story about Reille Hunter? This seems worse than a story run in the Enquirer. At least they are entertaining!

    • Posted By: loriw @ 08/13/2008 2:21:03 PM

I heard the Enquirer did a follow-up article and the baby that Hunter( or whatever her name really is) had. The Enquirer got exclusive photos of the baby and the baby has the head of an alien!
So I guess the baby isn't Edward's after all.
Sounds like Hunter slept with more than just a lot of married men, she also slept with married aliens.

Sorry huckleberry, I must disagree. The player in this instance was Rielle Hunter, not Mr. Darman. She had her own purpose in keeping this friendship alive. Publicity is exactly what this self described "flim-maker" wanted, but she wanted to call the shots. She was looking for a shortcut to fame and fortune and she didn't care what she had to do to get it.

What is the matter with these married men who mess around with women they meet in bars or who snap their thongs at them?

If they had any cerebral matter, they would run very fast and very far in the opposite direction.

I repeat: The only thing more pathetic and distasteful than Edwards' affair with some flaky wanna-be is a Harvard educated award-winning journalist playing her for a fool. Jonathan Darman: Do you really think your deception and exploitation of her is any less repugnant than the woman (and affair) about which you report? You lost your decency and human perspective in this story, apparently to score points with your boss. It reminds me of the bully in school who thinks he's scored a big victory when he beats up the smallest (most vulnerable) kid on the playgound. Your method, tone and approach to this story reflects more about YOU than Rielle Hunter. The only thing I took away from this "story" was: Darman is a predator who continues to gets all jacked up by the attention of a woman he mocks and treats with disdain and disrespect; and is especially ego-satisfied that she continues to show attention despite his ill-treatment. An astute observer might say you are just a sadistic SOB. Honor your education, dude; be a decent journalist, not a story whore!

what is it that Hunter was being a "wannabe" about?

What the hell is a wannabe anyway? I always thought that someone starts with an interest in a trade or a vocation first before deciding to become that involved in that trade or vocation so how is that being a wannabe?

hypocrite= John edwards + John Mccain. Both men who cheated on their wives. McCain left his sick wife. Based on statistics, both men & women cheat about equally and most divorces include cheating and we all know the divorce statistics therefore most of us on this site making comments, are hypocrites. This is because they have cheated on their spouses or boy/girlfriends.
crazy= People who think that they can deduce trustworthiness or effective decision making prowess because someone cheats on their spouse.
moronic= People who think Dubya did not disgrace the Presidency because he did not cheat on his wife. Ahh, Katrina, Iraq, etc, etc, etc.
Doomed= America because the above hypocrites, morons and idiots are voters.

    • Posted By: Asja55 @ 08/13/2008 12:16:37 PM

I agree with kjair comment 100%. I will never understand how someone can think that what kind of spouse you are could have anything to do with your ability at work. Its like saying because Charlie Chaplin was a lousy husband that means he was a terrible comedian too. Insisting that its an issue of trustworthiness and that you don't want the leader who cheats and lies? Oh, phuuleeze. You cannot be involved in world politics on that level without it! Only we call it "diplomacy" and "manouvering". Wake up and read something, stop looking into other people's bedrooms for answers about the world and its problems.

Hey buddy, put the crack pipe down and back away from the computer.

Thanks for the typo correction...but in lieu of making insulting comments...will you provide a point-by-point explanation with anything I wrote that you found incorrect (Only a Republican would know the proper spelling of "Ike's" full name)... I am curious to know your thoughts...in spite of your wise"crack" comments...
