Why does your article only talk about Russia attacking Georgia? Why do you not talk about Georgia attacking South Ossettia first? What's fair for Georgia is fair for Russia.

It seems like the US and its western allies have all the right in the world to interviene anywhere to protect its strategic interests regardles of the international community opposing those actions. Irak was a sovereing state as was invaded by the US regardles of the international community position against it.
Kosovo is a integral part of the sovereign state of serbia, however in order to punish serbia for their actions the US backed the cecesion of Kosovo from Serbia.
I am not in favor of any kind of belic conflict due to its tragic and brutal nature, but the West has created far more mess in the world in deffence of its interests than Russia has and i think this mess is also created by the west by pushing its way into the spehere of influence of another superpower. Cuba is still paying his dues for the missile crisis yet the USA is trying to deploy a missile system at the doorstep of Russia. Man enough of this bipolar neutoric bullshit they sell about democratic regimes. No one is free of guilt is this conflict.
Iraq wasn't a democratic country and U.S said it should be so they got invaded. If the U.S so into encouraging other countries to be a part of democracy why aren't them helping this small democratic country?
Russi
Because friend, the only reason we want Democracy(TM) is to open the doors for our corporations, to run in and cannibalize your resources and convert you into an economic serf state. Modern democracy is essentially a weak form of government which, as in the case of the United States, does not actually look after the interest of its own citizens, but on a long enough timeline, makes rule by corporations possible and exposes the host country to undue foreign influence. Historically thats good for us, because we can simply buy the kind of foreign governments we want. Its not about you or me, what is right or wrong, but extending power into new places. Not that dictatorship is any better, but lately one has to wonder. The veil is falling in the USA now, and there is a lot of cognitive dissonance and angst over this noble thing we thought we were and what we really are.
WHy in the world didn't Georgia give the US a little heads up that they were going to invade Russia's friend here, or did they ? Did we (US) just say go ahead and let's see what happens. I doubt it. The Georgians stepped in it and now they are upset because we won't bail them out, which we will end up doing anyway. Yes, Russia is over reacting, but any student of history knows that they look for excuses to do so and Georgia couldn't have accomodated them any better than they did last Friday.
who in their right mind would believe that George Bush is someone you can rely on when things get hot? Why didn't our brilliant president tell these guys that we couldn't back them up? Maybe he'll strut around and say something inspiring like "bring it on." The Russians are going to clean up the little mess on their southern border and put in a regime that will quit talking about joining NATO and crap like that and we are going to let them do it.
The only person who can help the Geogians is their President. It is the Georgian President who started the aggression in South Ossetia by having 6 Russian Peacekeepers shot and killed. Saakashivili' s gamble didn't work (by attacking South Ossetia). He thought of two scenarios:
1. He didn't think that Russia would react to the attack because they are the U.S.'s ally
2. If Russia would retaliate (which they did), he tthought that the world would view Russia as the aggressor, and the world's sympathy would be on them.
The Georgian President sacrificed his very own people to gain power, or increase the Georgian Border. To Sami2: You are criticizing Obama for urging diplomatic talks. Do you prefer for us have a full scale war against Russia even if the aggressor is Georgia? Umm.. on the second thought, do you really know what is going on that region.. and do you know the facts? Perhaps you're just another chickenhawk dittohead.
hold up ren. Georgia tried (foolishly) to take a neutral area. Russia is now occupying soveriegn Georgian soil. They are willfully killing citizens.
Take Georgia to task for a stupid gamble...but don't act like Russia isn't an aggressor.
I'm taking Georgia's president to Task. Sure.. Russia has been the aggressor in the past.. but not this time around. I don't like Putin.. but this time he has every right to retaliate.. and that is part of the Georgian President's gamble.
The Russians should be limited their movements to the disputed zone and should have done a better job at avoiding civilian casualties (as usual).
it appears the Georgians started the hostilities, so no valliant effort from the West is warranted to bail them out. The Georgians clearly underestimated Russia's military response, their army now well-funded by Russia's oil profits over the last few years. It would be wise of the Russians to avoid huge civilian casualties though. Anyhow, the US and the world would not benefit from escalating this war and it should be resolved diplomatically. Sorry war-mongers. :)
Your a bunch of fools. If you were a citizen in Russia talking like in your own country you would be shot or put in jail. Seriously. It has gotten that bad over there now. Don't take your freedom for granted. Treat your country well.
that not true, I am originally from that area please get facts right, now that was like that in stalin time but not now
Stop the propaganda. It's so full of crap. Russian TV is government controlled. It isn't free anymore because of Putin. Look. Russia has been wanting to take out Georgia for a while now... why? Because they are pro west and on top of one of the largest oil reserves in the world.. Putin has been aggressively strong arming countries over a number of years in efforts to corner a large portion of the world???s oil reserve and this is a huge bite of that reserve. Remember when Russia claimed the north pole with a military presence? The Putin dude is an ambitious ex KGB agent jerk.. I consider him sneaky and dangerous. Look.. Why is Putin still calling the shots when Russia supposedly have a new president? Russia is no longer a democracy anymore. It is an uncheck dictatorship.
So you think our media is NOT controlled?
OK, suppose it is all true. But how all this justifies a sneak attack on a city using heavy artillery? Because thet is what Georgia has done.
the spin by our government and the press has been some of the most twisted ever. The animosity of the Georgians towards the Ossetians has been around for hundreds of years. the Georgians were out to punish and rout the Ossetians from the area. The Russians just loving to have an excuse to go after the hated Georgians jumped at the chance with Putin and Bush in Beijing. The twist is this and that is that Georgia bit off more than it choud chew and has now gone from being the aggresor to crying foul and asking for help. The Georgians made their bed, let them sleep in it.

There is no reason for the USA to intervene. We already have 2, wars going on in which the USA is involved (Iraq, Afganistan). We don't need a third.
The time of the USA running to save every underdog nation in the world and bring them freedom and democracy is over. It should never have happened in the first place. Korea, Vietnam, and now Iraq were/are monumental mistakes.
Our own economy is in ruins, and we have a huge deficit largely casued by ther Iraq/Afganistan wars.
The Georgian people can take care of their own war with Russia by themselves.....as can any other nation which finds itself suddenly at war tieh their neighbors.
Don't look for the USA to save the day anymore. THat time is over.
The Georgian President should be held accountable for the deaths of all civilians. What tiny nation is insane enough to attack Russia! Over provinces - where the people chose Russian citizenship, where no one was begging for freedom and salvation. Then they are surprised we are not there? What! You want to start WWIII? And to top it off, out of all nights for the invasion, they pick the night of opening ceremonies of the Olympics. Did you think Russia would be too busy with the Olympics to notice? That's just great! Most leaders are in China, all eyes are on China, and Georgia starts a war! Did they really expect militarily backup? I feel so sad for the people of Georgia and the two provinces in question. They are shedding blood needlessly.
Hey TN woman... whether you are a repug or a demoncrat (lol.. just being facetious with the Demoncrat term, hehehe), it is just refreshing to see someone who outline the facts and not just parrot what he neocon dimwits say. One correction tho, Georgia didn't attack Russia - they attacked one of Russia's province which happen to share Georgia's. The Russians designated peacekeeping forces to S. Ossetian because of the conflict (between the Georgians and S. Ossetian's). Saakashvili's goal was to trap Medledev by attacking S. Ossetian, and killing 10 Russian peacekeepers. He thought that iwould be a win-win situation for him.. but he is mistaken. Saakashvili is solely responsible for civilian deaths. He also thought that if the Russian retaliate to his aggression against the S. Ossetian, the world will come to his aid, and it'll look as if Russia is the aggressor. Fortunately enough, not all people are as stupid as the neocon repugs, lol
Georgian president killed 2000 people in south ossetia in 24 hours, Its interesting how they don't show that. He started this war and he going to pay very dearly for it
The United States didn't go to war with the Soviet Union when it invaded Hugary and Czechoslovakia. Why did the Georgians think we'd go to war with Russia over Georgia? Who did the Georgians think they were, anyway...Israel?
Do you think we could get the Russians to help us with our illegal immigration problem?

Hmm. Where is America when her "Allies" need her? The same place the Iraqi Shi'ites and Kurds found them after Operation Desert. The same place the Mongs and Laotian's found them after Vietnam. The same place the Cuban ex-patriates found them after the Bay of Pigs. The same place every ally and friend after Korea has found America after 1960. Sitting at home, voicing our angst at events and NOT getting involved. There was once a day when being an ally of AMERICA meant trust, friendship and loyalty. Now it means, "Good Luck, you're on your own. Call us sometime if you make it through this!"
Can you give an example of when America"s word meant "trust friendship and loyalty." The conquest of THIS continent is littered with treaties ignored when our white, christian, genocidal population wanted more land, gold or whatever they desired. Around the world, America has long been in the business of deposing duely elected governments and backing dictators to the hilt for commercial reasons, but when the bottom line turns red it's asta la vista baby.
As I always tell my foreign friends, America is the friend of no country. It does only what best suits its banker owners and what most profits them. So when it was profit for them to be allies with Saddam, he was a great guy, but when it was profitable to wage war on his country he became the devil.
Are you kidding? America doesn't even come to the aid of its own CITIZENS. We've lost all moral authority in the world, except in the minds of thoroughly brainwashed red-necks who don't understand who their Owners are and why they're really marching off to war. Its time for a reality check folks, USA isn't #1 like they teach you in grade school.
America is a friend to all countries. It is our twisted, ignorant, and greedy leaders who makes us look bad. If you talk to an average american, you will find that we are friendly, considerate, tolerant, and passionate. If you talk to a right wing neocon, your perception of Americans would be heartless, ruthless, and uncompassionate but extremely self righteous religious hypocrites. Moroever, there are those truly compassionate conservatives which I so admire.
Cheney is snarling, Bush is in China kissing up to the powers that be & you ask will the US intervene? Of course not! We would have to borrow the money from China to aid Georgia in pushing back the Russians. We don't have enough military personnel in Afghanistan, so unless Cheney/Bush call for a draft (not) the Georgians are on their own. As for the European nations assisting Georgia, puhleese.

You can cut the revisionism with a knife in here,as Bush-critic tinfoil Truthers have put down their 9/11 ''inside job'' glasses and have decided to try their hands at RISK,as usual with no-one knowing what they are talking about. To begin with,no-one on the American side ''talked the Georgians into invading Ossetia''. Not a inkblot of evidence exists to support this.[no more than Russia claiming that it was at first, only reconciling Ossetia instead of what it is actually doing. Annexing all of Georgia and will move to install a pro-Putin puppet]. This act alone will guarantee guerilla war for years, where Russian occupiers will be picked off in hit and run raids, similar to Chechnya.
Russia, going back to a 19th Century playbook right out of Disraeli or Tennyson, begins rattling its sabres at its old enemy, the Turks. REUTERS observes that the Russian Navy went after a Turk warship in the Black Sea and has warned the Turks away from sustaining the Georgians with arms or other assistance. Any move by Moscow to move troops to the Turk border region will be met by a general military mobilization, which is already having the effect of making European capitals sick with worry,as a ''why stop there''? mentality is suspected of flourishing in the minds of the generals and admirals who long for the glory days of the old regime, along with emboldening Serbians in the former Yugo Republics after Kosovar independance, who look to Russia as its savior.
If nothing else,Putin is now neutered with any further complaints aimed at worries over the Russian sale of military hardware to Iran by the Americans, who are already pointing to his griping over Turk arms sales to the Georgians. The Turks are already setting up aid stations and camps along their northeastern border and if the Russians get trigger happy, they will expand this war, with Poland,Rumania,Bulgaria,Hungary,Turkey,[and Armenia],and the former satellites, moving to mobilize. The lights will be burning late in Europes capitals tonight and inside of the UN HQ,for all that it will be able to accomplish. Pass to this ''initial aggressor''nonsense, and it will pay to observe that the same news agencies now writing of this war are the same ones who, back in the period 1991-1994,were observing that it was the Ossetians, and not the Georgians, who were shooting at Georgian military and civilian targets long before this day ever came.
