Why does your article only talk about Russia attacking Georgia? Why do you not talk about Georgia attacking South Ossettia first? What's fair for Georgia is fair for Russia.

It seems like the US and its western allies have all the right in the world to interviene anywhere to protect its strategic interests regardles of the international community opposing those actions. Irak was a sovereing state as was invaded by the US regardles of the international community position against it.
Kosovo is a integral part of the sovereign state of serbia, however in order to punish serbia for their actions the US backed the cecesion of Kosovo from Serbia.
I am not in favor of any kind of belic conflict due to its tragic and brutal nature, but the West has created far more mess in the world in deffence of its interests than Russia has and i think this mess is also created by the west by pushing its way into the spehere of influence of another superpower. Cuba is still paying his dues for the missile crisis yet the USA is trying to deploy a missile system at the doorstep of Russia. Man enough of this bipolar neutoric bullshit they sell about democratic regimes. No one is free of guilt is this conflict.

who in their right mind would believe that George Bush is someone you can rely on when things get hot? Why didn't our brilliant president tell these guys that we couldn't back them up? Maybe he'll strut around and say something inspiring like "bring it on." The Russians are going to clean up the little mess on their southern border and put in a regime that will quit talking about joining NATO and crap like that and we are going to let them do it.

it appears the Georgians started the hostilities, so no valliant effort from the West is warranted to bail them out. The Georgians clearly underestimated Russia's military response, their army now well-funded by Russia's oil profits over the last few years. It would be wise of the Russians to avoid huge civilian casualties though. Anyhow, the US and the world would not benefit from escalating this war and it should be resolved diplomatically. There is no reason for the USA to intervene. We already have 2, wars going on in which the USA is involved (Iraq, Afganistan). We don't need a third.
The time of the USA running to save every underdog nation in the world and bring them freedom and democracy is over. It should never have happened in the first place. Korea, Vietnam, and now Iraq were/are monumental mistakes.
Our own economy is in ruins, and we have a huge deficit largely casued by ther Iraq/Afganistan wars.
The Georgian people can take care of their own war with Russia by themselves.....as can any other nation which finds itself suddenly at war tieh their neighbors.
Don't look for the USA to save the day anymore. THat time is over.

The United States didn't go to war with the Soviet Union when it invaded Hugary and Czechoslovakia. Why did the Georgians think we'd go to war with Russia over Georgia? Who did the Georgians think they were, anyway...Israel?

Cheney is snarling, Bush is in China kissing up to the powers that be & you ask will the US intervene? Of course not! We would have to borrow the money from China to aid Georgia in pushing back the Russians. We don't have enough military personnel in Afghanistan, so unless Cheney/Bush call for a draft (not) the Georgians are on their own. As for the European nations assisting Georgia, puhleese.

Not a inkblot of evidence exists to support this.[no more than Russia claiming that it was at first,only reconciling Ossetia instead of what it is actually doing. Annexing all of Georgia and will move to install a pro-Putin puppet]. This act alone will guarantee guerilla war for years,where Russian occupiers will be picked off in hit and run raids,similar to Chechnya.
Russia,going back to a 19th Century playbook right out of Disraeli or Tennyson,begins rattling its sabres at its old enemy,the Turks. REUTERS observes that the Russian Navy went after a Turk warship in the Black Sea and has warned the Turks away from sustaining the Georgians with arms or other assistance. Any move by Moscow to move troops to the Turk border region will be met by a general military mobilization,which is already having the effect of making European capitals sick with worry,as a ''why stop there''? mentality is suspected of flourishing in the minds of the generals and admirals who long for the glory days of the old regime,along with emboldening Serbians in the former Yugo Republics after Kosovar independance,who look to Russia as its savior.
If nothing else,Putin is now neutered with any further complaints aimed at worries over the Russian sale of military hardware to Iran by the Americans,who are already pointing to his griping over Turk arms sales to the Georgians. The Turks are already setting up aid stations and camps along their northeastern border and if the Russians get trigger happy,they will expand this war,with Poland,Rumania,Bulgaria,Hungary,Turkey,[and Armenia],and the former satellites,moving to mobilize. The lights will be burning late in Europes capitals tonight and inside of the UN HQ,for all that it will be able to accomplish. Pass to this ''initial aggressor''nonsense,and it will pay to observe that the same news agencies now writing of this war are the same ones who,back in the period 1991-1994,were observing that it was the Ossetians,and not the Georgians,who were shooting at Georgian military and civilian targets long before this day ever came.
