How ironic! Just two months after Evan Thomas warned us of the false analogies that can be drawn from Munich (http://www.newsweek.com/id/141502?tid=relatedcl), and John Barry gives us a doozy!

    Hey Bub,
Had we not given them the same type of guarantee that Buah 1 gave the Marsh Arabs, we may not be in this situation. Get a grip and understand that we cannot control the world, as much as you would like that we could.

Gaurdian UK story today written by IAN Traynor -Bush was made aware of Georgia plan back in April.Bush warned Georgia not to go foward. The point is Bush knew that this conflict was going to happen.

Discredited themselves? They still fill the airwaves calling for war with Iran, Syria, North Korea, China, Russia, and San Francisco. It seems they are as popular as ever among the talking-head set.

After all, the warmongers are so strong and manly. Just look at Bolton, and Kagan, and Kristol and Barry. Manly men, each and every one of them. Clearly, if we just trust them, they will keep us safe.

This is the nuttiest argument I have heard in a long time (since 2003, that is). I thought the Neocons had discredited themselves for all times, but it seems like they feel obliged to give it one last go. The U.S. has invaded a country 6,000 miles away for no discernible reason relating to security. Russia at least has the argument (if overdone) that their citizens, or at least compatriots, were being killed. We should start WWIII in order to support Georgia in doing that???

I don't think the U.S. has much to say about this little disagreement between Russia and Georgia. Georgia started this situation by invading South Osetia with the intent of driving those citizens back across the border into Southern Russia so they could reclaim land Georgia claims is its territory. Russia reacted, as would the U.S. if put in the same position. Furthermore, outside of our just invasion of Afghanistan, we invaded the sovereign nation of Iraq and I have yet to see anybody except Bush support that move. No need to escalate this conflict.

Yes, Nuke 'em. That will show 'em how strong we are.

It is quite unfortunate that the US political and media elites are comprised mostly of penis-challenged simpletons and mental defectives who think war, and foreign relations, are similar to Madden '09.

I don't know what the qualifications of this writer are, but what he is suggesting is a prescription for initiating a thermonuclear war between Russia and the United States. There is an extremely compelling reason that the US and the USSR did not become engaged in direct, conventional conflict during the cold war. To do so would have created an unacceptable likelihood of escalation to mutually assured destruction. I find it incredible that such irresponsible drivel as this can be published by a theoretically respectable media organ.

The 82nd Airborne as a trip wire?? Are you insane??

Great Post, John. Although, its a bit wimpy., what with all those words. Why not just cut to the chase? We need to nuke Russia to save the peace. Once we wipe out a couple of hundred evil Ruskies, they will know we mean business. Are you with me, Johnny?

Your article is a typical example of the Georgian war propaganda. You are trying to persuade western readers that Russia is wrong and Georgia is our friend. The problem is that our friend and ally - Georgia turned to be a criminal regime, which attacked the peace-keeping force with the UN mandate, and sleeping peaceful city of Tskhinvaly with rockets, artillery and bombs. This attack almost swept the city from the face of the earth and killed more than 2,000 women and children. This is genocide without any doubt! Instead of defending these criminals like Saakashvili you better look at sufferings of South Ossetians who are real victims in this war.
Our friends in the past such as Osama bin Laden, Sadam Hussein got a new body on their list. His name is Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili. Congratulations Mikheil, this is the company that you deserve!
We use to call Osama our ally when he fought against Soviets in Afghanistan; we armed Sadam and call him an ally when he attacked Iran. Now we armed and trained the Georgian army which committed genocide in South Ossetia. Well done, America! It is time to wake up and see how wrong our foreign policy is, how morally pervasive it turned to be. It is really a shame.

Poland better watch out and wise up. If we won't defend Georgia then Poland should be shaking in their boots about now.

As being born in Sweden of Estonian parents I at first hand now about the Russian bear. Sweden has been fighting Russia since the 1500's. In fact Swedish Vikings founded Russia, the Rus, hence Russia.

Estonians have born the brunt of Russian aggression 1/3 of its population has been decimated. In 1940 there were 1 mn Estonians today there is 0.9 mn nearly 70 years later. My uncle was killed and most of my relatives disappeared.

Russia is and always will be aggressive, they have such a huge inferiority complex. They feel slighted at every turn. The feel persecuted and oppressed, it seems that they are constantly paranoid. Their national soul almost seems to be pathologically paranoid.

Georgia is no w suffering what Estonia suffered and if the US and NATO does not make a stand the world will suffer even more. Russian ambition is endless, Putin is fast becoming a fascist dictator as dangerous as ever Stalin or Hitler was.

"Journalsist" John Barry, One Question... How can you make the comparaison with World War II , when russia or USSR had lost 20 millions of lifes to fight against hitler. Are you crazy ? When it will be possible to report Abuse on journalist reports !

No. We should not intervene. It makes good sense to "choose your battles wisely." And well, we've chosen our battle already, but unfortunately, not too wisely. Consequently, we are stretched too thin now economically, militarily, and politically to be able to choose a wiser battle. No, we have used up any leverage we may have had on the Iraq debacle waged under false pretenses.

It???s plain to see that no one wants us poking into their business anymore and they???re much less reticent to tell it to our faces publically now than ever before in history. China told us to mind our own business when Bush made his obligatory comments about their human rights record. Iran told us to mind our own business when we told them we didn???t think they should have a nuclear program. It???s okay for US, but not for you, because, after all, our intentions are always good ones! Didn???t you know that?

So, sorry Georgia, we???d love to help you, but we???re too busy with more important things right now like fighting the battles of tribal Sheiks in the middle of the desert so we can win the hearts and souls of a people whose land we invaded for. . . um, some reason.

No, sorry Georgia, there is only one country between you and Iran. And that would put us within shooting distance. Not that we mind getting into a shooting war, mind you. It???s just that we have a bunch of War bonds we have to pay back to our Olympic hosting (albeit human rights violating) friends in China before we get embroiled in anything else. You know the ???the borrower is servant to the lender.??? And being that that???s from the Bible, and being that we???re a Christian nation and all, and being that we certainly can???t be anybody???s servant, well, I???m sure you understand.

Yea, I know, it would be appeasement, but right now we???ve got to default to our policy of preservation; preservation of our ???world???s greatest country??? status, of course. But we???ll be sure to send the Red Cross when you need them.

    Good luck.

Neither the U.S. alone and/orsupported by all of the NATO members can come together to challenge the Russion move! They dare not and will not! Because the U.S. is beseiged by its own problems in Iraq, with our soldiers having completed their duties twice or even three times and are fatigued and exhausted; internally, we saw the Communism falling two decades ago, Capitalism is now falling in the U.S. WSe are being plagued by economic woes and ills on every front, be it housing, energy, credit, job expots to other countries; it would not only be difficult for Bush and Cheney to act on this one but even the incoming incumbents to the Presidential office will have to think about taking punitive action against Russia twice!

  • Posted By: Jan399 @ 08/11/2008 7:58:45 PM

Could you define "intervene?" Sending American troops to Georgia would be madness...it would trigger WW III. Some things can only be solved by diplomacy. Georgia is an ally, but Russia is not an enemy. If we try military intervention, it would trigger a chain of events..an atomic chain.
