    This John Barry must be the substitute history comentator. The guy has no clue, OR he thinks he is read by a bunch of idiots.

    Trying to compare Germany's aggression with Russia's attack is totally ludicrous. Hitler aggression on Poland and Checkoeslovakia was totally unprovoked.

    1. Russia's agression was a result of Georgi bombing Ossetia for an entire night and killing hundreds of innocent civilians.

    2. According to this Webpage, when asked why ke attacked, Sakslivi indicated that it was the perfect moment.

    3. The Russians requested an emergency session of the UN to stop Georgia's aggression.

    4. The emergency session, led by US, Britain and germany refused to do anything about it because Russians request indicated that both sides should refuse to use force.

    It was then that the Russians attacked. Not attacking would have been appeasement for the Russians. After all, Georgia was one of their republics just like texas is one of our states for 200 years. Stalin who ruled Russia for many years was a Georgian, just like Bush is a Texan.

    So Mr Barry, go back to what you do best, maybe home economics or something like that and stop making a fool of yourself, please.

    Newsweek and MSM, things have changed. You are not the only source for our news. It takes only couple of mouse clicks to get to the truth. Shame on you. This is the same media which did not really question the Iraq war but was enjoying the profits from "shcok and awe" show!!

  • Posted By: DBose2 @ 08/12/2008 9:09:36 PM

    Newsweek is making a false propaganda. Read the Indian newspapers: they are saying Georgia attacked and killed thousands of pro-Russians with Russian passports who are the people of South Ossetia, who wanted to join their brothers in North Ossetia, a part of russia. This is also true about Avkhazia. Then the Russian troops came to protect both the citizens and Russian peace-keepers who were being killed by Georgian soldiers. The President of Georgia, who took power in a rigged election two years ago is a known criminal, but pro-American, so he is not guilty.
    After the brutal invasion and occupation of Iraq and preparations of another invasion on Iran to steal their oil wealth, the destruction of Yugoslavia and Afghanistan, does USA has any moral right to say anything if Russia asserts itself ??

    Hey Chechens what do you think of Russians? What did you say? They comitted what?? Genocide?
    How about you Ukraines? How about you Poles? What about you Afganistan? O yeah that is right you pulverized the soviets.

      bhel45: are you joking??? Ukraines??? Do you know anything about the world??? I am Ukrainian, I live in Russia and we are one nation!!!

        Sorry Dmitry, we don't have a decent lifeguard at the gene-pool.

    Let's not forget that Georgia attacked South Ossetia first, killing citizen's with Russian passports. Russia was just looking for an excuse to crush Georgia and Georgia gave it to them on a silver platter. Both Russia and Georgia are at fault here. Georgia for attacking first and Russia for over reacting. But let's not start WWIII. At least Obama's nuanced response holds both Russia and Georgia accountable. Not like McPain whownat

    • Posted By: Jill from Florida @ 08/12/2008 3:09:19 AM

      And lets not forget to place additional blame on the European Union, United Kingdom and the extremist Democrats and Republicans. Their main interest in Georgia is the BTC oil pipeline, who's major owner is none other than BP, the world's largest oil company based in London - a major contributor to Mr Obama's presidential campaign.
      The BTC oil pipeline has the daily capacity of 1 million barrels of oil to be loaded into tankers at the Turkish port. It is the source of 40% of Europe's oil.

      Russia is doing nothing we didn't do in the Serbian/Kosovo conflict. So how can we blame Russia for taking a page out of the Western Worlds playbook? Obama better learn US history a little more, maybe instead of 300 foreign relations advisers he should get 200 more who can compare US & UK inventions throughout the years.

      • Posted By: Braes @ 08/12/2008 8:46:09 PM

        I don't blame Russia at all, and the naked play for power here is a breathtakingly stupid misadventure. Putin/Medvedev are being sweethearts. The level of hypocrisy and duplicity is simply mind-boggling.
        McCain's leading foreign policy guy is an agent for Georgia. This is all public-record. Mind boggling.
        Hey Russia, I am sorry these idiots run my country.

    • Posted By: Jill from Florida @ 08/12/2008 3:10:42 AM

      And what has Russia done that is different from Kosovo? Research it before you answer.

      • Posted By: DenisK @ 08/12/2008 4:26:10 AM

        At least Russia do not demand an independence of S.Ossetia, because if they do, all their politcs last 20 years is just lie. And US bomb Belgrad to make Kosovo independent. This is the difference.

        • Posted By: Braes @ 08/12/2008 10:12:28 AM

          The US Bombed native slavs for their Muslim masters, for Oil. Look at the market from the success of the war until the end of the Clinton Presidency. There was a period of glut.
          We taught Ivan "Regime-Change" and "Overwhelming-Force" Last expressed on world televisions in "Shock and Awe." We have invaded nations with no provocation or causus belli. We say to the world, do as we direct or face our force.
          Ol Ivan has the right to defend his citizens wherever they are. If someone with a U.S. Passport required assistance we'd send SOF/Marines/Seal/Delta to go get them, and break anythig they need going in or out.

  • Posted By: reader666 @ 08/12/2008 8:41:45 PM

    If the only reason Russia's invasion of Georgia is to protect their citizens, they may have a valid argument. But if they continue their invasion of Georgia without an immediate withdrawl back to their original positions, then it might be safe to assume Putin has other intentions, which may explain why he fought so hard to be prime minister. If Russia digs in and stays in Georgia, then we can assume that Putin's remarks about the breakup of Russia, as the biggest blunder in the history of the Kremlin, to be a sign that Russia is now attempting to reunify the old Soviet block by political and military force. If this is Putin's intention, then we have a whole new problem and all of the former Soviet block nations will need to show solidarity in force and be prepared to defend themselves against being absorbed back into the old Soviet Union. A fast track to Nato membership may need to be discussed for a number of Russia's neighbors.

    Stay the "F" out of it. Period. Condemn it, wag the finger at Russia, but stay out of it. Period.

    • Posted By: Braes @ 08/12/2008 8:36:34 PM

      Wag a finger? Why? We should do like the good old days and take Saakshavili out the back door and plink his [expletive]. We can find a smarter sock puppet to camp our oil that wont get us into WWIII.
      (Or get off the oil all together... I'll be getting a Chevy Volt thank you.)

    Whoever wrote this article has absolutely no idea of the dynamics of what is happening in the region between the Russians, Osetians and Abkhazians on the one side and the Georgians on the other. It would have been better to have someone with even a schoolboy's knowledge of history of the region write this article.

    • Posted By: Braes @ 08/12/2008 8:33:45 PM

      That's just it, he's a jackleg neo-con idiot. Clueless is what he is counting on.

    I know the jews are going to be blamed for this too!!!

  • Posted By: Mikedork @ 08/12/2008 8:23:42 PM

    Why don't you just blame this on the Jews... Everything else is

    The oversimplistic analogy between 1938 Munich and the present overlooks significant differences between the two historical events. Most significantly, the fact that a Georgian offensive preceded the Russian invasion makes all comparison inapplicable. Our failure: not pushing the parties for legitimate local referendum for independence of S. Ossetia and Abkhazia--if we were truly democrats rather than partisan allies of Georgia, we could have diffused this.

    If America were to get involved at this point, Bush would be roundly criticized in the press. This suggestion is nothing but a setup to see if Bush will get involved and provide an excuse for our press, which would normally call for the President to stay out of it. Our media has not supported any military intervention anywhere since the Clinton Administration. So, it would be better to let Georgia fall and let Bush's successor deal with the consequences.

    This situation with Georgia and Russia pales in comparison to Hitler. And then the autor says send in American Peace Keeping Troops. What will we do if Russia physically rejects them? The author gives no thought to the principle that action begets reaction and the first action or reaction should not always be force. This kind of thinking is just another example why we should return to the draft. When our leaders can send anyones and everyones children to fight they tend to reason more critically.

    We've seen Putin brainwashing Russians and spreading blunt propaganda based on blatant lies for many years, and now he has taken the first step towards REAL war games with tanks, bombers, civilian casualties and all.... Putin is as dangerous as Hitler and Stalin were, and mark my words - we haven't seen nothing yet! The longer the rest of the world tolerates his behaviour the bolder he will get - and the more catastrophic the outcome. Whether we want to say the CW word out loud or not - but the Cold War is back. Wake up USA and EU and smell the Russians!!! LEADERS OF ALL FREE COUNTRIES MUST UNITE and stop Russia before it's too late. Don't let the history repeat itself again!

    • Posted By: OneManArmy @ 08/12/2008 6:34:21 PM

      History will always repeat itself thanks to greed and selfishness. Humans are a stupid species.

    When the Nazis came for the communists,
    I remained silent;
    I was not a communist.
    When they locked up the social democrats,
    I remained silent;
    I was not a social democrat.
    When they came for the trade unionists,
    I did not speak out;
    I was not a trade unionist.
    When they came for the Jews,
    I remained silent;
    I wasn't a Jew.
    When they came for me,
    there was no one left to speak out.

      Bravo! That poem really sums it up.
      The free world can no longer remain silent and passive and wait to see what Putin comes up with next. He is a ticking time bomb!

    STOP, GEORGIA!!! People of the world, you are being deceived! World mass media propagandize false information. Russia DID NOT ATTACK Georgia! On August 7th, 2008 at 10:00 PM Georgia attacked South Ossetia. On August 8th, 2008 at 3:30 AM Georgian Army tanks entered Tskhinvali. Artillery bombing proceeded all day long, and fight with the use of tanks and heavy military machinery was lead against both Ossetian Army and civilian inhabitants. 2000 innocent civilians are already killed. The Russian peacemakers arrived to South Ossetia in the evening of August 8th, 2008 to settle the conflict and prompt peace in the republic and to protect Russian citizens living on the territory of South Ossetia. Georgia has attacked South Ossetia on the eve of Olympic games, which is extremely cruel and cynical. Your outrage is better served by a coherent argument, the absence of which simply makes you and your outrage laughable and impotent..

  • Posted By: jath123 @ 08/12/2008 11:57:34 AM

    The first thing Georgia needs to buy after this war is advanced anti-aircraft systems. It sounds like the Russian air force is what really tipped the balance here. In fact, we should sell these to all of Russia's neighbors. Oh, and by the way... anyone who suggests a direct U.S. confrontation with Russian military forces is quite possibly too stupid to even feed themselves. WTF is up with this article? It actually transcends politics, in that most Democrats and Republicans can all agree on the sheer idiocy of directly confronting a major nuclear power with huge tank forces on its own borders.

    • Posted By: roaw_henry @ 08/12/2008 6:12:15 PM

      You will never see a Jew in the U.S. army, but they always want the US to go to war.
