    I assume that your next article will be from basic training as you put your own life on the line to help the Georgians expel the Russians.

    Another terrible war to ponder....as war weary as we are I would have to say that I agree with sending the 82nd just as a little insurance policy. Just when you thought you only had to worry about terrorists, Russia jumps up and reminds you how scary they can be.

    When the Nazis came for the communists,
    I remained silent;
    I was not a communist.
    When they locked up the social democrats,
    I remained silent;
    I was not a social democrat.
    When they came for the trade unionists,
    I did not speak out;
    I was not a trade unionist.
    When they came for the Jews,
    I remained silent;
    I wasn't a Jew.
    When they came for me,
    there was no one left to speak out.

    STOP, GEORGIA!!! People of the world, you are being deceived! World mass media propagandize false information. Russia DID NOT ATTACK Georgia! On August 7th, 2008 at 10:00 PM Georgia attacked South Ossetia. On August 8th, 2008 at 3:30 AM Georgian Army tanks entered Tskhinvali. Artillery bombing proceeded all day long, and fight with the use of tanks and heavy military machinery was lead against both Ossetian Army and civilian inhabitants. 2000 innocent civilians are already killed. The Russian peacemakers arrived to South Ossetia in the evening of August 8th, 2008 to settle the conflict and prompt peace in the republic and to protect Russian citizens living on the territory of South Ossetia. Georgia has attacked South Ossetia on the eve of Olympic games, which is extremely cruel and cynical. Oh please!! Stop Russian propaganda!!!!!! Russia invaded Georgia and there is no justification for that in international law. And all these tales about the 1,000 year old Ossetian history, them living on the Samachablo territory for hundreds of years. They live there because Stalin settled them. Please wake up or go back to Stone Age Russia!!

    Independent Russian journalists claim - citing evidence and contradictions in Russian governemnt statements - that south Ossetia and Tskhinvali has been bombed by the Russians themeselves!!! Both conflicts - in Abkhazia and S.O. - has been thorougly planned by the KGB for decades. A fact which Russian media addressed in times of democracy (during the Yeltzin time).

    The two prior comments are as far as they concern the war in Georgia totally indefensible. And so I must say: there are other sources of information than Russian television or governemnt comments! This war just shows the reckless, brutal actions Russia is used and willing to take when it sees its power melting. Whether there has been "ethnic cleansing" by the Georgians has yet to be proved. Carp, carp, carp about our involvement in Iraq and then tell us we need to be involved militarily in some other place? I don't think so! Let's learn a lesson from Iraq and not get involved militarily anywhere else be it Iran or Georgia at least until we are completely withdrawn from Iraq.

    All the problems in the world are not our problems. That is a lesson we need to learn! If we can't learn the lesson then we need to be a busybody in one country at a time. Let the Germans deal with Georgia and the Israelis deal with Iran.

    I cannot see anything misleading about this article. Those two readers who previously read the article should not take Russian television or governemnt comments as a reliable source. However, your comments really make me think you do.... Ask any other nation - the Polish, the Ukranians or any of the Baltic S Baltic States

    Chechnya was the first warning. Georgia is the second. If you will not learn from your mistakes, I hope the U.S. stays out of it and doesn't save your asses like the first two times......

  • Posted By: FluffyMcDeath @ 08/12/2008 12:33:23 PM

    In what way is Russia repelling the Geogian attack on South Ossetia anything like appeasement? Oh wait, I get it. You WANT to appease Georgia's aggression while calling it NOT appeasing Russia stepping to the defence of South Ossetia.
    Your wordsmithing is either uninformed or intentionally misleading. I'd say the latter because you use the knee-jerk propaganda term "appeasement". - you are trying to fan the flames of war and you should be ashamed.

  • Posted By: emmarcee @ 08/12/2008 12:33:19 PM

    Newsweek and MSM, things have changed. You are not the only source for our news. It takes only couple of mouse clicks to get to the truth. Shame on you. This is the same media which did not really question the Iraq war but was enjoying the profits from "shcok and awe" show!!

  • Posted By: FluffyMcDeath @ 08/12/2008 12:29:17 PM

    If Georgia invades South Ossetia, how is it appeasement if Russia repels them? Oh wait, I see, you WANT to appease Georgia's aggression and call it NOT appeasing Russia.

  • Posted By: emmarcee @ 08/12/2008 12:29:17 PM

    Why do these MSM people make the same mistakes over and over again. Get off your fat payed a- and do some work ie research!. Svetlana was right. This war is cooked up to bring up the oil price again. Russia stands to gain from this. Oil companies as well . Poor citizens are paying for this with their lives. If West does not respond to this "tantrum", it will come to a stop on its own. Georgians were fooled into beleiving that they can take on Russian army!!

  • Posted By: freedomsnotfree @ 08/12/2008 10:14:14 AM

    Svetlana, Dmitry and the other Russian Propogandists...
    There WAS no Ossetian Army.. that is a RUSSIAN army.
    THERE WERE NO RUSSIAN civilians.. forcing passports onto the people of the region so that they can cross the border in order to trade does NOT make Georgian citizens into Russian. Stop LYING about that.
    Even the Russian media has backed WAY off that initial claim of 2000 dead.. the last report was under 100. And those were primarily "peacemakers:"... You folks arent even skilled liars as your own timelines prove your lie...the Georgians arrive at 3 am and the same afternoon the Russian army just happens (what a wild coincidence!) to have hundreds of tanks right there on the border ready to roll into areas of GEORGIA...
    South Ossetia was NEVER recognized internationally as a seperate place because it is STILL part of the territory of Georgia.. and YOU know it. Propapanda? hmmm... gee, what country is a specialist in the field of disinformation? Yes.. Putin's KGB Russia. Amazing how to PROVE to us how truthful the Russians are, you could only list RUSSIAN sites...

    • Posted By: rdoudna @ 08/12/2008 11:53:34 AM

      Why don't you start picking up some news paper, watch a few interviews. The people of South Ossetia or not exactly blaming the Russians! You seem delusional. WWIII is the only answer for you. Are you a neo-con? You act like it.

    the only recourse the u.s. has to get russia's attn. is to push for nato in chechnya this is a very hard thing for russia to deal with if nato is in chechnya then russia will be at a stalemate to try and recoup losses from the fall of the soveit union also the chchnya goverment will better economics than russia because they too are sitting on oil and russia will not try and attack for two very good reasons (1) they are a mamber of nato and (2) the chechnya population is very large compared to the very small georgia chechnya must have a membership in nato or the russians will continue to get stronger until they feel they are again a super power ! i'm starting to feel sorry for our next president whomever that will be ! god help us if it is obama because russia will surely try him !

    • Posted By: jath123 @ 08/12/2008 11:49:40 AM

      This suggestion makes absolutely no sense. The government of Chechnya is ruled by a strongman (Ramzan Kadyrov) former warlord dictator installed by the Kremlin. Therefore Chechnya would never seek admission into NATO. Oh, and unlike secular Muslim Turkey (also a NATO member), the Chechen muslim population is more radicalized. Is this what you want in NATO, even if you could get it... which you can't? You are right on about one thing though, we need to contain Russia.

  • Posted By: Dmitry Moscow @ 08/12/2008 7:34:24 AM

    I am a Russian who always admired "Western democracy", Now I understand that this all is a fake. Look at CNN - its a Sovient style propaganda at its best.... Are you people blind. "Democratic Georgian leader" is the guy who sent his oponents abroad and used arms against his opposition. "Freedom loving nation" uses missiles against Ossets. "Georgia always wanting to separate from Russia"... are you kidding... Iosif Jugashvilli (Stalin) ruled Russia for many years...

    • Posted By: rdoudna @ 08/12/2008 11:45:58 AM

      Dmitry,

      If you read most of the posts below, you would know that the American people in general are not bashing Russians. Yes the talking pundits on TV are idiots and we the people from the West know it.

    • Posted By: kartveli @ 08/12/2008 9:28:55 AM

      Dmitry. You probably listen to chanel 1. We are nation that loves ossetians, armenians, russians and every other nationality that live in my beloved Goerigia. It is your imperialistic government that wants to show the whole world what they are capable of. Now I am just going to sit back and enjoy, how other countrise go after us one by one. Beware, RUSSIANS ARE COMING

  • Posted By: freedomsnotfree @ 08/12/2008 6:56:39 AM

    Georgia may have made the mistake of assuming the moral character of the west.. and hoped we would stand with them. But.. its too obvious that this entire affair was planned by Putin. Come on apologists for the Russians! Explain WHY there were 1000 tanks on the border of a country that posed NO threat to them! Explain why Gori and Tbilisi are being bombed and innocent CIVILIANS are being killed.. old ladies living in poverty in Gori pose NO threat to the "safety of Russians"..This is another typical slaughter by the Russians. I have been in Georgia and know the Georgian people well.. the joke that South Ossetia is part of Russia is not even worth a chuckle... its a typical Bolshevik scheme. Putin is, never forget...KGB.. yes.. remember the Evil Empire? well.. they NEVER went away. Will the West wake up when tanks roll through London to "Protect the interests of Russian citizens living in England"???

    • Posted By: rdoudna @ 08/12/2008 11:41:38 AM

      We should start WWIII? Do you think the US is currently in any position to take on the Russians at this point? Wake up, listen to the news and give us all a break about our moral character. There is a time to fight and a time to talk, the West is talking as should be.

  • Posted By: fuerst @ 08/12/2008 11:37:17 AM

    J.Barry is an idiot and the article is a Gebbels-like propaganda. Where have we been when Georgians started the war and killed 2.000 people sleeping in their homes in Thkinvali? Saakashvili is a war criminal and must be tried by the International Court in Haague. On the other hand, screw Georgians and Russians, all we need is our domination in the region. Do you think we care about pseudo-democracy in Georgia? C'mon folks, all we need is an instability in the region to have a better grip on it. WIth Iraq proved to be a total disaster, maybe we get Georgia right, what you think? Let's send our sons and daughters to get butchered in the war we have nothing to do with. This will definetely add to the battered image of our country, right? Russia was our frined once, how come we got this all so wrong... Read international sources, e.g.:
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2008/aug/09/georgia.russia1 Read German or Spanish media, e.g.:
    http://www.elpais.com/articulo/internacional/Kosovo/Osetia/Sur/elpepiint/20080811elpepiint_6/Tes Wake up folks!

  • Posted By: cabinet1a @ 08/12/2008 2:08:52 AM

    Iraq...not the right thing to do. Said so then. Afghanistan....yes our mess in the first place. But now when an ally, who's government is duly elected, legally tries to settle its internal problems is subsquently invaded by a resergent totalitarian state my countrymen say.....oh well. How fine a group of citizens this is. Not a lot of moral fiber in evidence here. Suppose if they had more oil the shoe would be on the other foot. More would
    probably care then.

    Two problems with doing nothing. The loss of faith around the globe will haunt us for decades if we fail to stand by those who have stood with us. Failing to hold the line against an aggressive Russia now will cost us more blood and treasure later than we would have otherwise have had to pay.

    I do have friends in that country, they are not Georgian citizens. There was no genocide...believe Russian Federation propoganda if you like. Or grow a backbone if that means anything to you.

    • Posted By: rdoudna @ 08/12/2008 11:29:31 AM

      Are you suggesting that we start WWIII over this? Yeah, you need to think a little bit more before typing such nonsense.
