Saakashvili's excuses seem too similar to the Russian's ones: they also claim that the Georgians had been preparing for this action for long time, with training maneuvers with America and Ukraine in Georgian soil, increasing their defense budget to a billion dollars, enrolling 129 American military "consultants"...
Russian sources, of course also claim that the Georgians started opening fire on their peacekeepers, killing 12, and shelling civilian Ossetian villages around Tsinjvali, leaving more than 2000 dead and 30000 refugees.
Finally, the Russians say that this was all masterminded by Washington, to strengthen Saakashvili and allow Georgia entering the NATO, closing the ring around Russia.

But who is to be believed in this game of power and influence? Is anybody innocent at all?

Russia is attacking a democratically elected government to strike back at the US, Nato and the EU for embracing not only this small country but Kosovo as well. Russia has a cultural heritage of pushing, bullying others politically until they are stood up to. It is time for the US, Nato and the EU to have some principled, moral and diplomatic fortitude and ensure that this behavior is not allowed now or in the future. It may mean the use of directly applied, strong and precise force to ensure that the message gets through. If Medvedev wants to engage in "Cowboy Diplomacy", let's circle the wagons around Georgia and fight back.

Huh? Why do the people of Georgia get a homeland and the people of Ossetia don't?

  • Posted By: earlshaw @ 08/13/2008 1:28:51 AM

Is this guy on crack? Does he really believe the crap he is spewing out there? I mean he speaks of 'freedom' for Georgia, but doesn't Ossetia warrant freedom too? Ossetia has had referendums seeking independence, and George has refused to accept the result. He started a war, and now he's lying about it. He is clearly a war criminal, and needs to be brought to trial.

I fail to see the difference between the people of Ossetia and the people of Kosovo.

I wholeheartedly agree with whywhywhy today. So true and well written. The USA is the 21st century bully and needs to exploit countries for profit or make war to steal money from vanquished nations.
    Sad but true.

I wholeheartedly agree with Why, Why, Why. Pal, you said it all.

Mr.saakashvili laments like a child. Look how childish are his observations of world affair and the solutions for the problems. He talks and acts like a spoiled teenager. He is THE problem that needs to be terminated and be sent to oblivion.

I believe and again this is only me but Russia has been somewhat franck on its uneasiness to see Georgia join NATO given the fact ONE : Georgia was part of the soviet block TWO: Russia sees the expansion of the ballistic missile defense system in their backyard as a threat from the west. Now let's not forget the cold war was not that long ago and although considerable progress has been achieved more needs to get done. the Georgian president should have played the diplomatic route for what he says himself Russia was itching for a fight so the best course of action should have been to stay engaged diplomatically with the russians and bring in international negotiators to monitor the solution. The Georgian president overplayed his hand by hoping that europe or America would respond militarily may be he was made to think so and even though he may have been looking for such an involvement from his western partners such response would have been counterproductive for the whole world, I would suggest he toned down the rhetoric against Russia in doing so he would help his partners in resolving the crisis as best they can

Sakaslivi is a bastard! Just like one of his countrymen Joseph Stalin was. He has the same genes.
The idiot...why did he go and pick a fight with a smaller nation like Ossetia. He bombed them for and entire night killinhg hundres of innocent civilians and now he comes crying that he got his a$$ kicked.
I dont think the Russians did enough!

    That Jerk--
And you never once question your own country's motives, actions, policies,; you believe everything your hear in the USA and about the USA. Certainly Russia gets the worst of world opinion; USSR is a tough handle to overcome. But don't be naive and think that our S...t doesn't stink. We have been lying to our own people and the world for decades. It is the nature of civilization!!

I have a home in central Siberia; have spent time in Kazakhstan, and elsewhere. I have met many Georgians, but never been inside the territory.

Zietz, Yes the name is fitting as I speak the truth. Yes, I have been to Georgia (knock the dust off my passport). My question is HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO GEORGIA??? Do you REALLY know what you're talking about??? Look at the reports and you'll see that Russia has been staging troops for sometime. I encourage Georgia to defend itself by any means. I do have to say that it LOOKS REALLY BAD FOR RUSSIA and THE WORLD IS NOT ON RUSSIA'S SIDE.

  • Posted By: maverik @ 08/12/2008 9:19:31 PM

US should not be blamed for Saakashvili's actions. Saakashvili is his own best enemy and what he should be responsible for what he did to his country.

  • Posted By: lmht @ 08/12/2008 5:28:24 PM

Having a disputed territories is one of the reasons that Georgia aplication to NATO was put on hold. Georgia desperately tried to settle its territorial issues with South Ossetia and Abhazia by confronting the first one with the artillery on the night of 08/08/08. If succeeded, Georgia would of have another chance to join NATO before US presidential elections. Saakashvili know that if Obama is elected, Georgia's chances to join the block would melt and dry. Russia in return acted appropriately. CNN reporting over this conflict is extremely poor and mixed with lots of lies. Look closer, its all staged. Isn't telling the truth the part of their job? apparently not

    • Posted By: zietz @ 08/12/2008 9:05:02 PM

Correct lmht; the sanest comment here! Russia is always scapegoated. But you know Condi Rice and GW were behingd the whole affiar. After all, what was she doing in Georgia last month??

Marylander and nicky1142... They must be on PUTIN's PAYROLL. Everyone know's about Russia building it's troops in the area. It wasn't a matter of if but a matter of when. Don't think that Russia will not pay a price for it's OPEN attacks. Funny that we see so many Russian's on a US webpage defending the actions of the country they're from. REALLY... Ask yourself, by the comments they've made are they really on PUTIN's PAYROLL. I would love to fight AGAINEST your mother Russia standing side by side with Georgia. This is also what I am telling to my congress. It is CLEAR THAT RUSSIA STARTED THIS and GEORGIA WILL MAKE RUSSIA PAY. Maybe I'll have to knock the dust off my passport as I would sure like to see the beating that Russia's about to get for myself. If Georgians start dialing up IED's it'll put a crippling effect on Russia's ground forces.

Sakatisvili reminds me of Argentinian president Galtieri who invaded the Malvinas Islands and got his a$$ kicked by the British. After they sunk one of their ships he was crying that the Brithe reacted with too much force. Petty dictators they are.

  • Posted By: ilia25 @ 08/12/2008 8:32:04 PM

He somehow forgot to explain how Georgian troops ended up occupying Tshinvali, if all they did was shooting at the Russian tanks crossing from the Russia some 20 miles away?

The man is a psychopathic liar. Russia started to bring its troops hours after most of Tshinvali was under control of Georgia, as well as the commanding heigths around the city. Anyone who following the conflict remember the Georgia reports about establishing a "constitutional order" in the break-away province!

    <<<
"Most of South Ossetia's territory is liberated and is controlled by Georgia," Saakashvili said in televised comments.

So who is he trying to fool now???

  • Posted By: motorherz @ 08/12/2008 8:19:58 PM

I don't think we're listening to the right guy here. Saakashvili is the one who started it all, including ethnical cleansing; why not listen to what the people of South Ossetia have to say?
