An interesting suggestion from Steve Levine. The Russians have a big weakness. Bush, Obama and McCain should keep in mind Russia's Achilles Heel as they deal with Putin and Medvedev. Levine knows this area, having covered wars in Chechnya, Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Nagorno-Karabakh, Tajikistan as well as the Soviet-Afghan war: http://oilandglory.com/2008/08/russias-achilles-heel.html

Russia and the West are interdependent. The USA attacked Iraq, and the oil price became twice greater in some time. The oil price became twice greater, and it is harder for Americans to pay for their houses that were bought by hypothec. What will happen if you don't let Russia pump its energy to the West? I think the oil price will become twice greater slowly. In such a way, the West can throw hundreds of Americans out of their houses.

Georgia's president was an idiot to attack Russia. I read an article where he thought the timing of his attack was brilliant. How brilliant does he feel now? What happens when you poke the bear? You face the obvious consequence. I wonder if he has learned anything? # 1 rule in fighting, pick a fight you can win. I feel sorry for his people, his leadership is a disgrace.

7 There are many similarities between the rhetoric and behaviour of Germany in 1938 and Russia in 2008, for example the defending of one???s citizens abroad argument,
    -
Czeck rebublic in 1938 DID NOT bombed the major center of Sudetenland with "saturation" artillery weapos, dit it ?

They are both to blame. With the cyber attacks days before on Georgian internet from Russian locations, to the shelling by Ossetians, the Russians goaded Saakashvili into doing something stupid. Which he provided for them in spades. And of course, and entire Russian army and navy conveniently ready to invade the entire country at a moments notice. Hmmm. Very convenient. One question, why is it OK for Russia to subdue Chechyna (a breakaway ethnic group within their international borders), but its not OK for Georgia to do the exact same thing to South Ossetia. Would be nice if reporters asked the Russian government that one.
If I were Georgia, I would immediately recognize and support complete independence for South AND North Ossetia. Russians would never allow North Ossetia to join a free South Ossetia and now they become the bad guy occupiers trying to subdue Ossetian independence. Instant blowback and a new Chechya-like problem to deal with. It would serve them right. In the meantime, hopefully Georgians send Saakashvili packing for his stupidity.

State and CIA both confirm that the Russians had no troop buildup in the region although it is clear they anticipated trouble and had plans of action in place. You can't blame Russia for being efficient .... or can you? :-)

Just one problem: South ossetia does NOT want independence: it wants to become a part of Russia, and North ossetia it IS a part of Russia, and does not even THINK to secede, especially after Beslan (by the way, the chechen HEROES that started that mess were based in Kodor Valley, Georgia, and north ossetians know about that...Got the picture ?) .

Peace in Georgia!!! DOWN those like Putin who are always standing against human rights!
Bring Putin to International Court of Justice for genocide and ethnic cleansing of Georgians!!! Investigate his childhood, where and how he spent it, information that has been limited to everyone around the world, and the truth might come out! And someone get a psychiatrist for him! He sure needs one!!!
And S. Ossetians and Abkhaz people, wake up!!! Russian gov does not care about you! Don't forget when they gassed their own people in the theater with poor Chechen women! Russian gov will gas you as start dancing different way than they do.
And YES CAPTAINSMC I agree with you that 2/3 of population from S. Ossetia fled to South of Georgia and NOT to Russia. Probably that 1/3rd of population was even forced to go to Russia by alcoholic Russian "soldiers". Peace in Georgia!!!

      About Gori - frank disinformation.
      ==================================
With great sorrow I have to state that we completely lost the information war. What they say of us abroad is terrifying. Saakashvili can be seen everywhere strongly resembling Hitler, tossing himself around, with a puckered mouth and with an idiot fringe, crying that Russia started aggression against Georgia. Yet, not a word is said that the Georgians first destroyed Tskhinvali and shot civilians and peace-makers. I do not even mention that Saakashvili has to be judged by the Hague Tribunal as an international criminal for the use of heavy artillery and "GRAD" multiple rocket launchers being used against living quarters. This is, for those who do not know, that "GRAD" launchers cover whole districts in their power. This weapon cannot "find out" who is right and who is guilty, and when the military hostilities destroy the whole network existing on a huge area (not only military facilities but the living quarters as well), it becomes clear that Saakashvili had a purpose to destroy the Ossetian people physically, and he succeeded in this killing by 2000 people in 1 day. If the European community judges Karadjich for genocide, so, obviously, Saakashvili has to be next in line.

It is strange how Georgia is receiving support from all media after attacking what can only be described as ethnic cleansing. How America is taking Georia side only makes it very clear how US policy follows Brzezenski's vision (the grand chessboard) of how United States should gain control and dominance over Eurasia. I guess it is easier to blame Russia than Georgia, as CIA is workign there and the last 4 years US has pumped money in to the Georgian army after putting in this puppet regime after the "democratic coup" that United States staged in Georgia and Ukraine. If we also take the rocket shield and Nato expantion into account how can the media portray Russia as the aggressor???

    • Posted By: Circus_left_but_the_clowns_are_left_behind @ 08/18/2008 4:56:01 AM

Because the media is in deep *** up to their gills. Because the media is run by empty suites and run for department store dummies. But if they were not the empty suites they would have asked a question, why the former Defense Minister of Georgia fled the country and asked for an asylum in France and why France granted the asylum to a person from a democratic country? My guess, the guy new about the plans to strike South Osetia and strongly disagreed, so he was kicked out. The second question, why Condi Rize stopped in Georgia 2 days before the events? The answer is: to buy a couple of bottles of good Georgian wine. Yeah, right.

Georgia did not start this. It responded to several months of shelling of its villages. "South Ossetia" and Abkhazia ARE Georgian territories with ethnic minorities which want to secede with help from Russia. The western media didn't begin to cover this until after Georgia finally moved in to stop the separatists' from terrorizing villages in their attempt to provoke this conflict, knowing Russia would assist them. He was defending his people without help from anyone.

For you info - Obama has over 300 foreign relations advisers. His #1 adviser is none other than Mr Brzezenski. It is his President Carter that will be remembered for the Iran takeover of the US embassy - because we followed Brzezenski's advise. His advise also included giving weapons to Osama bin Liden and the Talibans - that ended well too, didn't it? Does Al Queda ring a bell? 9/11? Thank Obama's adviser for that.
Mr Brzezenski,as a native of Poland, whose family immigrated from Poland to Canada in 1938, had strong personal dislike in USSR/Russia.

Putin and his "siloviki" comrades control Russia, and the Georgian Prez. must have been out of his mind to send armoured columns into S. Ossetia and expecting US or [gulp!] NATO's help. NATO has proven to be a failed alliance, as you can see from its actions in Afghanistan. The Russians are re-building thier military with petro-dollars, and soon will be a real menace to former Warsaw Pact nations. They are sending a message. They are sending it to Poland and the Czech Rep. NO US MISSLE SHIELD. The ball will be in our court soon. I expect both host countries to say NO to the shield now. Expect NO help from European nations that are NATO members. These nations are Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, and to a lesser extent, France. They have reneged on thier NATO commitments, and we are shorthanded. Lots of ambushes, attacks on our perimeter, probing for weakness, and a lot of firefights in small villages surrounded by hills with dense foliage. So, do not expect ANYTHING from those GUTLESS nations I mentioned above. They are led by cowards who are only interests are thier own.

People always vote with their feet ......the reports coming from the South Assetia are are that one third of the refugees went north to Russuia and two thirds to the south .....One out of two refugees fled to their friends the Russians . That is a pretty good indicator of allegiance......So the majority of the people who live in South Assetia , by voting with their feet , are saying they are Georgians .....Russian propaganda has been revealed by these facts

They blame him? Why? For slaughtering 2000 civilians in their sleep or allowing the US to use his country as a puppet against Russia?
Its time that Russia starts arming anti-American groups in Latin America and set up a "defensive" rocket shield on Cuba. Russia can stop genocide and still be demonized as the aggressor anyways, might as well balance out the American threat to Russia

  • Posted By: mk2spin @ 08/17/2008 8:42:01 AM

This was is started by Georgia, not by Russia. So it's Georgia that can stop the war as well. I think Russia will step back once they are sure that America will not come in to their territory

The method Russia seems to be using in gaining its objective of restoring the Soviet Union is to separate a piece from another country and then move in its ???piecekeepers??? to keep that piece for itself.
In conclusion, the international community should make plans for reacting to the next Russian attack on its neighbour. The present reaction is inadequate since Russian forces are staying in Georgia. The next attack will come since the invasion of Georgia is premeditated and part of a bigger plan (Robert Kagan???s Aug. 11 article in The Washington Post). There are also plenty of ???frozen conflict??? opportunities that Russia can warm up ??? Nagorno-Karabakh in Azerbaijan, Eastern Ukraine that is mainly Russian-speaking, Transdniestria in Moldova, the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad between Poland and Lithuania (access rights for example), the mainly Russian-speaking Ida-Virumaa region of Estonia.

Really? How did a whole re-inforced regiment of Russian armour appear so quickly, overrunning the Georgians as if they were Rommel's Afrika Corps? Putin and his KGB gangsters are in charge, and they WILL carve up Georgia. You strike now, you know the US has been weakened, but when the time comes for the end game, you will feel the might of the US military. You and yours are a bunch of "siloviki", and the time will come for honoring urself will be at an END.

          -
And what an armour unit is supposed to do ? Go quick where it takes to go, overrun the enemy infantry, this kind of things ain't it ? Russians did it, good troops, maybe Sakashvilyi (and you) though that russian army was a pushover ?, Well, he was wrong . When georgian tank try to overun Tzkinvali (but russians were already there) they failed, and loss almost a dozen of tanks . Why georgian infantry did not do the same to russian armour runit ? Poor AT defence, that's it . Georgian army (armed by US, trained by US, guided by a government funded openly by Soros -that is, US-) proved to be a REAL push over . So what ? Ask your money back from Sakashvili...
          -
You strike now, you know the US has been weakened,
          -
Of course, russians know you were weakened (more exactly: bogged down in Afghanistan and, more than this, Irak, wit few troops and materials to send in other operation theaters) . All the world knew it . Did Sakashvili knok it too ? Has anybody forgot to tell him about it ? And if not, WHY IN THE HELL HE ATTACKED ?

Georgians blame Saakashvilli? What about the McCain campaign encouraging the Georgians to invade S. Ossetia? See Washington Post article...

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/08/12/AR2008081202932.html?nav=rss_politics

McCain's top foreign policy advisor Randy Scheuneman has a serious conflict of interest here. The day Scheuneman signed a $290,000 contract to lobby for the Georgian government, he prepped McCain to speak with Saakashvilli. We don't know for sure what was said to Saakashvilli. This works out good for Schenueman any way you look at it, except when his advice to Saakashvilli was to go ahead and invade in spite of warnings from Bush and Condi not to do so. McCain benefits when he looks tough standing up to the Russian bear. Did he have a hand in creating the situation by free-lancing on foreign policy?

    • Posted By: Jill from Florida @ 08/16/2008 9:30:14 AM

Are you saying that Saakashvili is only a puppet without a mind of his own?
Is not Saakashvili a Georgian? Was not Joseph Stalin a Georgian? Does not Georgia still consider their most famous countryman is Joseph Stalin? Did not Stalin "give" South Ossetia and Abkhazia to Georgia as a gift to his fellow countryman?
Did NOT the US tell him NOT to invade South Ossetia? And, now you want to blame McCain for Saakashvili's actions? I cannot even blame Bush for this.

Saakashvili is an impotent man who feels powerful when he inflicts pain on other weaker people (South Ossetia). He is a coward and a whiner. He is a pathological liar. He makes George W Bush look like a Rhodes scholar.

This is not 1968, but it is closer to 2003, when the United States, United Kingdom & former USSR countries invaded Iraq and made a regime change. If I am not mistaken, Georgia was part of that mission, considering the 2000 troops were just returned to Georgia. As they say, what goes around, comes around.
