One doesn't have to be Photoshop geek to lie with photos. When editors or photo editors crop and re-size photographs to suit their desired slant they do lie already. It's like when you close-crop a photograph of a sparse crowd to show only a more tightly packed section to make it appear that there are more people than the actual, that's already lying. And this is being done perhaps everyday, thanks or no thanks to ubiquitous PR man

woah woah woah I thought they had other photos and a corpse? Everyone got this crazy over a photo? Not even several photos? I wondered why it wasn't imediately debunked by some veterinarian. So this family took one photo and just left the corpse there and no one else saw it? I'm gonna say photoshop is the real culperate. What's the media come to when they go this far about nothing.

Also wolf...you watch too many movies you're thinking of plum island...it's an animal disease control center dedicated to preventing things like bird flu and mad cow disease .... and is owned by that cloak and dagger group: the department of agriculture. anyway i see absoloutely nothing imoral with gene splicing.....the stuff they're doing right now is fascinating...they're already growing replacement organs and have made fast growing trees with the aid of rabbit dna. We've got adorable glow in the dark monkeys (jelly fish) goats that give spider silk in their milk for a varitey of textiles and bullet proofing. They're even on their way to making meat cheaper and healthier by growing it in a lab without the need to kill animals (not that I'm a vegitarian but still). One day we'll even be able to give human beings longer lives and eliminate disorders. I think genetic engineering is far from evil and sending us towards a bright new future.

I distinctly remember the NBC Commentator at the opening Olympic ceremonies say the firework 'Footprints" outside the stadium were computer graphics. The author of this article probably had too much vino or had his up his...well you know. .

Let's be logical here....if I found this "creature" washed up on the beach, I would be proud to let the leading biological scientists around the world examine it (for a hefty fee that is)....& when it's found to be an authentic discovery. I would be cashing in "cha...ching $$$" You know it's a hoax the minute you discover that know one can get there hands on it for dna or some other biological testing

Ok, I'm not writing this to stir the proverbial pot. But if this is not photoshopped, and if its not a decaying dog or other common critter, I would like to offer a more bizarre suggestion. I'm no zooligist, and I can't determine the size of the creature from the photograph, but it looks a lot like an animal I just saw at my local zoo last week. It is called a Tapir. I know its a bit of a stretch, but I haven't heard anyone else suggest it. I have no clue how one could wash up in New York, since it is native to the Amazon. Since everyone is getting their two cents in, I thought I'd throw in the possibility of another animal.

I realized I have been manipulated into reading this stupid story about how I and everyone else is being manipulated by pictures in the media!!!!!!What?????? This is a joke right???? this is hilarious. This is just a bunch of money hungry new york citiots trying to make some more money before summer is over. NYC leave montauk alone, you destroyed east hampton in under ten years.. Montauk went from a peaceful little fishing town to a new york hotspot in two months. Every black and white wearing fool from the city goes there and becomes an overnight surf star. I wouldn't be surprised if the surf lodge wannabes along with some nyc pr people came up with that one. Could it be lizzie grubman trying to get a tan or just a bloated raccoon. we have a failing economy and a war to get through. Lets focus on what's important.

Everyone is just stupid to not realize that all this picture is is a decaying mutt. There are a few pictures of this "thing" that everyone calls the "Montauk Monster" and the media chose this certain one so that it will shock and awe you. If you look closely enough, the thing that looks like a beak is actually its skull peaking through the skin. The other picture is much different and more normal looking. But i agree with the last two comments made on this page as well - thanks for changing the subject of the title on us Newsweek & photojournalists' jobs are being ruined because of new technology as well as the media ruining their reputation. God people LOOK AT THE FACTS and DONT BELIEVE WHAT ONE PUBLICATION TELLS YOU. Thats exactly why there are many different books and magazines to read so that you can form an opinion of your own....DUH!
