The last time I checked we had 50 States. Federal, state and local officials travel year round around the Country to discuss, plan and interact to improve our nations security. With all the waste coming from congress why try and make some DHS officials look like the bad guys. If an attack occured tommorrow and important information and progress could have been made in Hawaii but was missed then the article would read DHS could have made a difference but failed to attend training session. Lets give our responders a chance to do their jobs.

Most of the commentators are missing the point of the article. Hawaii is a long way from Washington, D.C., and the travel costs are huge. This is one jaunt that the DHS officials could skip, and save the taxpayers a pretty penny.

I guarantee if this meeting were held at the Holiday Inn - Anchorage... there wouldnt be a peep out of anyone. heaven forbid someone gets to have an ounce of fun, smoke a cigar, look at a member of the opposite sex or drive a large SUV without SOMEONE having a 'Politcal Correctness' fit. Lets go after the real problems, and not this garbage...shall we?

this is dumb. Last I checked, Hawaii was a US State - part of the "homeland." Who cares? If you want to look at wasteful spending, do a story on DOD, or even Congress themselves.

Should we really care if a legitimate conference happens to be in a desireable location? I often organize conferences for my job and I intentionally choose nice destinations to ensure that people attend and can have an enjoyable experience in the few hours they are not stuck in a conference room. Would it make a difference if this Homeland Security conference was held on the mainland, such as in my hometown of San Diego? By the way, we also have nice beaches in San Diego-- but don't tell anyone!
