Forum on ethics and values moderated by Rick Warren. McCain then Obama beginning at 8pm on CNN

Hooray, let the pandering to the evangelicals begin. I know that religion is important to alot of people in this country, but why do the candidates need to coddle them each election cycle? If Im on an airplane, i want the pilot to be focused on the mechanics and logistics of flight, not praying eerything will work out. Stockholders don't give a damn wether their CEO is a holyman, just wether or not he is making sound business decisions. Why do Americans pretend that religion has so much to do with being president?

It used to be called separation of church and state.

        • Posted By: bob_hall27 @ 08/17/2008 12:13:56 AM

you apparently do not understand the constitution this separation of church and state is the fact that the state cannot tell you what religion you have to practice your right to practice your own religion cannot be infringed no matter where you are to take a right away from one person takes rights away from all. You cannot support one persons right by limiting the right of another. This is not the governments responsibility to do this even though it has taken up the practice.

            bobhall27.?

MRZOID said "Why do Americans pretend that religion has so much to do with being president?"

I agreed. It used to be called separation of church and state - which decrees that government and religious institutions are to remain separate and independent of each other. One of the controversies about Wright was that he used the pulpit to preach politics. The First Amendment guarantees your religious freedom.

      • Posted By: thehappyamerican @ 08/16/2008 2:10:27 PM

So Candidates don't have to pray for money and votes as a less direct expedient. This is a Christian Nation so it is sound campaign strategy! Any pilot or CEO could tell you that.

What did you think, loriw? For me, I loved the format (being asked the same questions so we could compare the two in their responses). It definitely stood out for me anyways how much more a man of substance McCain is the type of responses he gave rarely with much hesitations. Obama was at his regular high level talk and had to hem and haw quite a bit more. To top it off, he never even mentioned Al Quada (sp?) when asked the question on Does Evil exist, and what you would do if faced with evil I thought that was odd.

  • Posted By: loriw @ 08/16/2008 11:25:01 PM

For anyone who had doubts as to McCain's mental faculties...I think McCain proved he has what it takes to be POTUS. On the question of evil Obama gave an answer that wasn't even one of the choices...he discussed confronting evil but the choices were negotiate, ignore, contain or defeat. Personnally, I went with McCain on defeat evil on that one. Before anyone, especially those who didn't see the forum, bash me for my take on the fact that McCain kicked butt tonight...Cnn did a post game and all 8 people who critiqued the forum aggreed- McCain did better than Obama. If you missed it, i sure hope CNN replays it and you take the time to watch it.

I agree. McCain, hands down, kicked butt!

      Hi loriw

I watched that debate. What a great forum. McCain definitely stood out as a man of substance based on how he responded in detail, and compassion vs. how Obama had a lot of uhs, ums (like he usually does when having to answer questions he has no prior knowledge of). His answers, to me, were more high level (broad) statements and in some cases he didnt even answer the question on Evil other than saying yes, it exists (he never said what his approach was to deal with it, while McCain said Defeat it immediately.). To top it off, he never brought up Al Quada and to me Evil = these terrorist , which McCain went into further talk. I cant wait until Obama and McCain do those supposedly 3 Town Mtgs after the dem. convention is over. Side by side answering questions that are random. If tonite is an example I cant wait to see all the debates side by side.

      • Posted By: loriw @ 08/17/2008 12:53:58 AM

        agreed.
Obama actually did answer the question on evil but gave his choice as "confront " which was not one of the choices he was given to choose from. Kinda leaves you scratching your head. On abortion he said he was Pro-choice but not pro-abortion...I just really don't think you can have it both ways in all reality.

        • Posted By: Zombiehero @ 08/17/2008 3:37:44 AM

I'm sure the Obama partisans will interpret the not pro-abortion comment as meaning...Obama isn't out there coralling prego women into abortion clinic...Abortion or Die.
I agree though To be pro-choice (which I am) means that you have to be able to live with abortion (that didn't come out right)

  • Posted By: cferns1530 @ 08/17/2008 3:48:54 AM

Its funny to see how the same dude who makes money on attacking Obama has done the same with Kerry. With the mass effect of the media, it is possible to keep repeating a lie until it becomes the truth. I just hope whoever they pick, the Americans can rise above the politics of fear.

Im glad atleast internet is a much better tool for researching either candidate.

Pia...I have told you for quite some time...TWO independent analysts have concluded...the POSTED birth certificates are tampered with. It was mentioned yesterday A.M. on FOX. The lid is about to blow off. There is a LOT of buzz, that Republican leadership has also acquired evidence that Hussein traveled in the '80s, on an Indonesian passport. The AP confirmed yesterday A.M. that....the photograph of his Indonesian school records were indeed authentic. They state his name as...Barry Soetoro his citizenship as...Indonesian and his RELIGION as......Muslim. He will have to answer all these questions.

The bigger question is this...IF his certificate isproven to be fake, and his legal name is actually Barry Soereto will you drop your support for The False One??? Will you finally realize that HolyRoller was right all along...Hussein is a crook and a fraud???

You essentially said to HR that IF Obama does prove to be everything HR has been saying and not what you thought of him...you'd still support him...what's the rationale for that? Why would you support someone that has repeatedly lied to you?

I fully admit if something comes out and proves without a shadow of a doubt that McCain is not what he says he is, I won't vote for him....I might not vote for Obama still but maybe a protest Green vote....you can't be so rigid in your loyalty....it only leads to failure.

How can Obama claim to be a "uniter" when his religion is based upon racism, i.e. black liberation theology. Here are a few statements from James H. Cone, one of the founders of black liberation theology, about the nature of Obama's religion, and you tell me if they are consistent with Christianity or "unification."

    (1) "Black theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community. If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him. The task of black theology is to kill Gods who do not belong to the black community. Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy. What we need is the divine love as expressed in Black Power, which is the power of black people to destroy their oppressors here and now by any means at their disposal. Unless God is participating in this holy activity, we must reject his love."

    (2) ???To be Christian is to be one of those whom God has chosen. God has chosen black people."

    (3) "While it is true that blacks do hate whites, black hatred is not racism."

    (4) "All white men are responsible for white oppression."

    (5) "Theologically, Malcolm X was not far wrong when he called the white man "the devil."

    (6) "If there is any contemporary meaning of the Antichrist, the white church seems to be a manifestation of it."

I recommend that you do a little research on Obama???s so-called religion, black liberation theology. First, here is a link to Obama???s church where they admit they preach black liberation theology, and that it is based on the teachings of James H. Cone. They offer his seminal book about Obama???s religion on their site, also. It is called ???Black Theology and Black Power.???

    http://tinyurl.com/5q7rjk

Also, here is the church???s Black Value System that Obama adhered to for 20 years:

    1. Commitment to God

    2. Commitment to the Black Community

    3. Commitment to the Black Family

    4. Dedication to the Pursuit of Education

    5. Dedication to the Pursuit of Excellence

    6. Adherence to the Black Work Ethic

    7. Commitment to Self-Discipline and Self-Respect

    8. Disavowal of the Pursuit of "Middleclassness"

    9. Pledge to make the fruits of all developing and acquired skills available to the Black Community

    10. Pledge to Allocate Regularly, a Portion of Personal Resources for Strengthening and Supporting Black Institutions

    11. Pledge allegiance to all Black leadership who espouse and embrace the Black Value System

    12. Personal commitment to embracement of the Black Value System.

After you have completed your research, you will find that Obama???s religion is NOT CHRISTIAN, like he professes it to be, but racist and divisive. Then, you need to figure out in your own mind, what it says about a man who would practice such beliefs for 20 years, and who would e

Just read the coment about Gianna Jessen and let me say that for every single Gianna there are tens of thousands of women who , for either medical or deep psychological reasons, HAD to have an abortion. So - blah, blah - the bottom line is it's the same old argument we've heard for decades. I just wish pro-lifers worried about these children from the minute after they were born - but once these children can no longer advance "pro-life" politics they're forgotten.

    • Posted By: loriw @ 08/16/2008 1:48:28 AM

or maybe there are tens of thousands of women who got drunk, had sex and forgot to take their pills.
one in every 4 pregnancy ends in an abortion...so you are saying that nearly that many women have deep psychological reasons for an abortion? As for medical reasons....that's an outdated arguement because modern medical advances have eliminated most medical reasons. Rape and incest are the only reasons that truly warrant the abortion choice.

for starters there is a waiting list a mile long for adoptions there are few reasons for abortions other than the couple listed below. just because you made a mistake or couldn't figure out how to use something as simple as a condom if you do the crime you do the time plain and simple. It is totally of the wall and a serious miscarriage of justice to allow anyone to KILL a viable fetus

What I saw was a dictator saying this is what I thing and this is what I'll do if you don't like it tough.
I saw someone shouting from the hip without any thinking and if he was the president today maybe we
were at war already with the Russians. Imaging if he was in Kennedy's shoes. Thank you

  • Posted By: Braes @ 08/16/2008 11:15:12 AM

Since Republicans will even start a war with Russia to make McCrazy seem relevant, what is the new definition of crime against the state? You can just leave piles of bodies all over the world for others to clean up? You people are dangerous. To all of humanity.

    • Posted By: SPORTLOCK09 @ 08/16/2008 11:25:35 AM

Good thing the democrat controlled congress will have to approve a war with russia beforehand. Oh, but then you'l' just cliam the republicans lied to you again huh? Nothing ever changes with Democrats.....It's never their fault is it? LMAO

I would submit that the falling polls mean nothing. Pollsters contact respondents by land line. Obama supporters for the most part are young, tech savy and have cell phones. MSM is a joke to them, as it should be to all of us.

    • Posted By: mrzoid @ 08/16/2008 2:00:49 PM

There really hasnt been much of a fall in the polls. Common mistake is to follow one single poll; a poll of polls is much more representative of current numbers. The mean numbers stil show Obama/McCain around 47 or 46% to 42 or 41%; numbers wont really mean anything until after the VP picks and the conventions. Right now voters are just suffering from ad nauseum.

I have to admit, I enjoyed not seeing much of Obama on TV for 8 days. It was kind of a vacation for me, too, in that aspect. ; - D

polls can be made to say whatever you want them to say most polls are one sided

Quite an interesting forum tonight. Rick Warren was quite impressive in his own right. The questions went to the heart of this campaign. It highlighted the stark differences, in the two candidates.

Senator McCain demonstrated quite well, the reason Hussein is terrified of Town Hall debates with him. He has a wealth of experience and wisdom, to goalong with the ability to connect on a personal level. While Hussein did O.K., McCain smoked him.

My favorite Hussein moment was his answer to..."who you would not have nominated for the Supreme Court." He named Clarence Thomas......based on A LACK OF EXPERIENCE. I'm still laughing.

Big Mac definitely gained some undecided evangelicals tonight. It's looking more like a landslide-oh yeah!

      • Posted By: HolyRoller @ 08/16/2008 11:47:13 PM

You are right. Even more he comforted those evangelicals who were uneasy with him. He increased their turnout.

The biggest thing though, I think, is..............he looked and acted like a LEADER. He was decisive and confident. He gained more than evangelicals. AND he scared the bejeezus out the the Kool-Aide kids.

        Allah has a headache tonight.

This one blew me away....when asked at what point does a baby get human rights?

Barry SoetorObama said...."Answering that question with specifics is above my pay-grade"

WTF...I'm pro choice...I believe in a woman right to choose but to deny that once a baby is born it has certain unalienable human rights is beyond reason.....I simply cannot fathom a Obama Admistration

Pres Obama...Russia invaded Ukraine what should we do?
Answering that question with specifics is above my pay-grade.

Pres. Obama A earthquake has hit the West Coast millions are dead what should we do?
Answering that question with specifics is above my pay-grade.

      • Posted By: HolyRoller @ 08/16/2008 11:39:27 PM

Great point Zombie. Barry is just weak. That is why I call him a silly little sissy. That is why he flip-flops so fast and easily. That is why he votes without using consience or conviction. He is not a leader. He will never depart from Soros doctrine. I think someone already did Jesse's job, on Barry. WEAK.

John McCain showed America tonight.....he is a man of deep conviction, strength, and courage. Regardless of personal political risk, he is true to his soul.. He is not a front man or a surogate. These are very dangerous times. And we can ill afford, a weakling as our Commander-In-Chief. We need a LEADER. We need John McCain.

I agree with your take on the forum. The differences were night and day in the way they answered the questions more so than the answers they gave. In regards to Thomas tho Obama stated Thomas was not a strong enough legal thinker or something very close to that. I don't think he said he lacked experience tho one could argue that experience would make a SCJ a stronger legal thinker.

The problem I have with Obama???s 20 year attendance at Trinity United Church is that Rev. Wright, by his own admission, preaches black liberation theology, which is a very racist theology based upon the conflict between the "black oppressed" and the "white oppressor". That is why, for example, Rev. Wright portrays Jesus as black, and his murderers as ???garlic nosed??????white people,??? because that is the only way that the story of Jesus will fit with his theology. That is also why so many of his statements are framed as black and white issues (e.g. "rich white people"; Natalie Holloway was a "white girl" who "gave it up" on an Aruba beach; 9/11 was a wake-up call to ???white people???; the "garlic nosed" Italians in the time of Jesus who killed Jesus were "white people"). Consistently making the point that Jesus was black and his murderers were white is very much like the bigoted fundamentalist Christians who continually make the point that the "Jews killed Jesus." We all know what that is code for; that means that the Jews are evil, as a group, and responsible for the murder of Jesus. Rev. Wright, Obama???s 20 year ???mentor and spiritual adviser,??? is guilty of the same type of bigoted rhetoric.

Finally, what I object to most is the framing of the issues by black liberation theologists. There is simply no excuse for calling white people "the devil" or the "white enemy." Those who developed this theology could just have easily framed it as a struggle between, for example, the "oppressors" and the "oppressed," or the "ruling elite" against "the rest of us." But no, they had to make it a racial thing, instead. And that's why those who follow this belief system in accordance with the teachings of James Cone, as does Rev. Wright and Obama, are following a racist creed.

Do you believe this humor-less POS? Obviously...his father 'pulled out too soon'... LOL... Not to worry....when Barack Obama takes the office in January of 2009 as the next President of the United States, I'm sure he'll veto all that legislation the Republicans have been trying to pass against their own stupidity and self-interest...The new President will understand why it was so necessary for so many Republicans to be voted out of office. The reason? BECAUSE YOU JUST CAN'T FIX DUMB

    MS KLIFT:

I don't hear your usual lovefest journal this week. Why? It seems his "cerebral" approach isn't quite working. You seem a little worried. "It's time to fight back...and quickly." And if you want to continue helping him -- a little more investigation might help -- before October. And you may want to talk to a few republican source to see what they're holding onto. In other words - how about being a journalist instead of a another Newsweek pro-Obama blogger?

    • Posted By: notroubleatall1963 @ 08/16/2008 6:22:07 PM

You're just jealous coz your GOP candidate is such a complete and utter loser.

Did you know that this Georgia invasion by Russia was meant to be the Republican's "October Surprise" but Kashvili (head of Georgia, sorry for the misspelling) jumped the gun (or maybe McCain got nervous about Obama's successful overseas trip)... so this was a ploy by Georgia to make McCain look really "presidential" in a time of crisis. Well, kinda backfired on Bush and McCain, now didn't it. Russia's still occupying Georgia and we do not have a leg to stand on! Too FUNNY that we admonished Russia for "invading a sovereign nation with the intention of overthrowing its leader" -- doesn't that sound vaguely familiar??? hahahahahahahaaa

A REALLY TANNED GUY! LETS VOTE FOR HIM DUUUDE! HAW HAW He IS DIFFERENT" Surfs up!

This from a guy who has to get the surviving members of three generations together at a family reuinion (ostensibly as a courting and match-making get together) just to account for one, full set of teeth. It must be all that racial hatred he was brought up on that narrows the mind to the point of being so numb...ergo...so dumb...and all that grinning gingivitus that follows , huh? I get such a kick out of brainless muppets and how these heathen rail on in here. I just cannott wait until November...I can't wait to see the looks on all their faces....Oh yeah....like you...I'm just as lilly white as all of these race baiters, too...LOL

  • Posted By: NewsWkDickG @ 08/16/2008 10:31:29 PM

I have just watched both candidates on TV and I have to say, they both were impressive and I strongly doubt that anyone's opinion was changed by their performances. It could easily be argued that they both have merit and I for one could probably live with either one being president, IF and only IF I could believe McCain wouldn't be more of the same. More of the total focus being on benefit for Special Interests and a select few (including the politicians themselves) while giving the average American nothing but apathy, the costs and an abundance of subterfuge (lies). We can't take more of the same. This country desperately needs change, you can see that everywhere, and unless John McCain can promise that, he would be nothing but more trouble.

    • Posted By: NewsWkDickG @ 08/16/2008 10:38:26 PM

That being just one persons opinion and I'll leave it for the rest of you to argue out, as I don't feel I'm (or anyone else) is accomplishing anything here. Not that I'm any better-smarter-whatever than anyone else, just tired of it all.

      • Posted By: Zombiehero @ 08/16/2008 10:41:06 PM

Something we can agree on....I think we both feel that our voices are lost on the masses. Just to much partisanship.

Senator Obama is very concerned about the potential spread of Clinging to Guns and Bibles Syndrome (CGBS). This disorder appears to be spreading at an alarming rate in rural Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. It's etiology of this progressive disorder is unclear, but may be infectious. Senator Obama and his campaign staff are trying to discover a cure. Researchers at Whatsthematter U. are carrying out a placebo controlled trial of a new medication for the treatment of CGBS. Interested individuals are asked to call toll free number.....
