As far as issues abroad, My Family feels VERY safe with Mr. Obama's selection as VP and with Mr. Obama's knowledge of our troops and what needs to be done. He will do the right thing, he will make sure our Troops are safe and he will bring the bravest Americans home to their families with dignity and integrity.

Mr. Obama and his family have more integity in he last 6 months than Mr. Bush had in all his years of office, I am a very proud American to see this man,Mr. Obama, He is what We as Americans need to stand by us, Not take advantage of us such as the Bush family has. We need to support the Obama family 200% because that is what he will do for us. God Bless America!

Why I am voying for Obama...because I am simply tired of the politics of divisiveness of the GOP. When they need to get out the vote...they put gay marriage on the ballot. Just a slong as there is someone to bask, it will ensure a good showing at the polls ofr th red candidate.

Now, I am an independent. Not affiliated with either part. The first democrat I ever voted for, however, was Bill Clinton. Why? Again because of the issue of dividing our country into this bunch vs. that bunch.

The core constituency of the GOP is no longer fiscal conservatives (which I count myself among) but raidcal right wing wackos. Until they fix that and get on a 12 step program for their addiction to this core base, I will probably continue to vote democratic. That is a shame. If you don't beleive me, think to yourself for a moment and answer the following question...Why would someone who wants to hold the most powerful office i the world pic someone to be in the #2 seat and a heartbeat away from that job like sarah Palin? Because she played to the ultra ring wing faction and that was were McCain knew he was weak.

When we as a country and a people once again make it clear that we treasure our freedoms more than our safety, more than our personal dogmas, and more than ouor money, both sides will straighten up.

Our nation has been in the process of divisions and rifts designed to keep us at each other and off the pressing issues of the day.

At least Obama did not do or say anything to make these rifts worse, and may actually be the kind of uniter that the great Reagan was.

I am so Proud to have Obama as our next President, His integrity and his stature as a family man is what we all need to take care of our families politically in the future. Bush has none of this and we all paid for his greed and lack of integrity and it's time for all of us to support Mr. Obama and his family to make this country what it was and soon will be,

Hmm...interesting. I was unaware that our Lord was actively endorsing John McCain. Where was THAT campaign speech? Or perhaps you could reference us the exact bible verse that instructs us to vote Republican. I am Christian and proud of my faith, but that is not the ONLY and certainly not the decisive factor in my voting decision. Whether you vote for McCain or Obama look at ALL the issues, not just religion.

The way I see our economy is, the banks have stopped loaning money because of defaults on loans. The people holding these loans HAD good credit when they got the loans and, more than likely, HAD good jobs. The main increase in daily expenses to both businesses and individuals has been the cost of energy. Exxon-Mobile posted $14BILLION in profits last quarter when everybody else was losing their shirts. 5 major airlines went bankrupt and the worries about the economy went from stagnant to volitile. Why were we paying almost $5.00 per gallon when in Mexico they were paying only $2.50? Why were executives given MILLIONS of dollars worth of bonuses when they were ruining the companies they worked for?
If our government were to GROW A PAIR and prosecute these crooks for the traitors they are (Economic treason is as bad as giving out military secres) we would be much better off and the likelyhood of a repeat of this situation would decrease DRAMATICALLY! They HUNG Hussien for impoverishing his people (among other things)!

Come on America wake up!! Where have our values gone? The reason we are in such a disturbing enviorment is that we have removed ourselves from the one and only true leader Jesus Christ our God. The end of times are happening right now. Check out the best guide for voting...the bible. I'm voting for McCain, it is a total no brainer.

I agree that abortion is not the only issue in the current presidential race. Since the economy is a key issue of this election, let's take a look at Obama's stance on universal health care. Obama has said in one of his speeches that universal health care is not a question of whether but a question of how. (http://obama.senate.gov/speech/070125-the_time_has_co/) There are several problems that I see with switching to a universal health care system. The first problem is funding. Most health care around the world using these systems is funded by the population through compulsory health insurance or taxation. Universal or socialized health care also does the following things: reduces physician's incentives to provide competitive health care for patients and reduces drug companies' incentives to provide new drugs and treatments leading to substandard health care for patients, causes the quality of health care to decrease and sends richer americans to other countries to receive treatments, destroys your privacy: now if you want to smoke, ride a motorcycle without a helmut, or gorge yourself on candy, I have a direct interest since my tax dollars are funding your health care. Due to this, more and more people are going to support bans against "risky" behavior to reduce costs This removes some of your liberties. Another problem is increased waiting time to receive care. This problem is more than a slight inconvenience considering many diseases and illnesses can prove fatal if not treated or diagnosed in a timely fashion. You are also going to see a shortage of physicians and nurses when adopting a universal health care program. This is due to the fact that these jobs will become less lucrative. Check out the following articles on socialized health care woes: http://www.liberty-page.com/issues/healthcare/ukcancerdrugs.html, http://www.liberty-page.com/issues/healthcare/ukwomeninlabor.html, http://www.liberty-page.com/issues/healthcare/ukgrandma.html, http://www.liberty-page.com/issues/healthcare/ukoneineight.html

If these articles don't lead you to question this issue, I'm not sure what will.
Also, to do more reading on both sides of this issue visit: http://www.balancedpolitics.org/universal_health_care.htm

All I ask is that people make an educated decision and not base their votes on catchy slogans.

    • Posted By: seattle_10 @ 11/03/2008 6:40:01 PM

What a pile of crap! Increased wait times will insure that less illness is caught early? What about lack of insurance not enabling people to see a doctor in the first place? Study after study has shown that Americans (the ones that actually have health care) spend many times what the per capita expense is for people in socialized countries. If the American health care system is so grand, then why are we way down the list of all (that is the capital ALL) measures of societal health? Infant mortality? Cancer? etc. etc... Last time I checked, England had plenty of doctors. I have several British friends that really like their system. Same with Canada. I sincerely doubt that someone is not going to become a doctor just because they are going to make a little less money. Same old story from the conservatives... less regulation is better. I'm sure that 10 years ago you were yelling for less Wall Street regulation too!

      • Posted By: starnoble @ 11/03/2008 7:34:43 PM

Let's also consider that just because americans don't have health insurance does not mean that they cannot receive treatment. Non-profit organizations and government-run hospitals provide services to those without health insurace, also it is illegal for a person to be denied emergency treatment EVEN if that person is an illegal immigrant. While I agree that a lot of individuals will still pursue a career in medicine, I still believe that as time progresses under a universal health care system, these numbers will decrease. Take into consideration that under this system there will not be much flexibility in rewarding physicians who treat their patients in the best way. Government jobs have mandated salaries meaning that physicians who do a poor job will be given wages equal to those who do their job well. With this in mind, don't you agree that physician's don't have an incentive to provide the best health care possible? Not to be cynical, but a job is a job and there are no guarantees that people will not pursue other, more profitable careers in light of a lack of merit-based rewards.

On a slightly different note, take into account surgeries such as breast reduction or augmentation, rhinoplasty, or lasik eye surgery. Under this universal health plan, am I expected to pay for these procedures? Some would say that breast reduction is necessary in preventing back pain others would say not. When switching to this system, who chooses which of these procedures should be covered and which shouldn't?

Finally, I would ask a challenging question: If health care in Canada is so much better than the health care here in America, why is it that many Canadians come to America to receive treatments? Perhaps it is because their health care is substandard for their needs.

Oh, and considering I was in elementary school 10 years ago, I can say with confidence that I was not yelling for less wall street regulation. Unfortunately, no one was talking politics on the playground.

I wish more people like you ( I am 47) would be more involved like you!!
I remember when in 1982 to 1989 the Nikkei (Japan Market ) went from 1982 at 7000pts to 1989 to 39000 pts.
Then in Jan 1990 it went from 39000 to 20000 by Oct 1990.
THINK- That is almost half in 10 months!!!!
It lost more--But not as fast--- TODAY AFTER A 500+ POINT GAIN--- IT ONLY IS AT 9100++

OUR market has dropped from 14000 down to 8100---- BUT OVER A MUCH MORE GRADUAL DECLINE---
MY GOODNESS-- It dropped from 10k to 8100---AND YOU WOULD THINK THE SKY WAS FALLING!!!!
This is after the BIG HOUSING/BANKING problem---??? SO WHAT HAPPENED TO THE OTHER 30-40%
that was lost QUIETLY/SLOWLY before the last 19%????

You are young AND involved in following politic's--GREAT!!! If you follow the stock market as well/or with as much curiosity--you will see things and make money--be happy with the decisions you make on both EQUALLY---!!!---MOST ARE GOOD<SOUND>THOUGHT OUT DECISIONS--THAT BENIFIT YOU/YOUR FAMILLY---
SOMETIMES THEY ARE NOT BAD DECISIONS UNTIL TIME PASS's and WE SEE THEM!!!

Follow the full political spectrum of ALL candidates allways, and make YOUR CHOICE according to YOUR belief's----NOT THE PARTY OF THE PERSON RUNNING!!!\

BLESS THE YOUNG PEOPLE WHO FOLLOW THE RIGHTS THAT ALL OUR (and MY oldest) BROTHERS AND OTHER FAMILLY MEMBERS HAVE DIED FOR-------

THE RIGHT TO VOTE FOR WHO YOU WANT TO!!!
Sometimes even if you only like one 1/2 way--but the other only 1/4 way

ONE DAY WE WILL LIKE ALL OF WHAT WE HEAR!

As a Canadian I would like to address some of your above comments. No system is perfect. Ask any Canadian and we give you a list of things that could be better in our health care system. I'm sure there are some issues in the European systems as well. I do not however remember hearing of anyone dying in the ER while waiting for care except in the US in the recent past. Sure we have some issues with wait times for elective surgeries. My neighbor has major health issues and not once has she been denied a new test or a referral to a specialist. Without a doubt the best hospitals are in the larger urban centers but then so are the universites and medical schools. We have no bans on any kinds of behavior. We still ride our quads and dirtbikes. We still go snowboarding and wakeboarding and water skiing. We don't deny care to the idiot that got hurt because he wasn't wearing a helmet. People hear didn't suddenly stop smoking or drinking or any other number of sometimes questionable behaviors when our healthcare system was introduced. We don't need to use the ER as a primary care facility. In all of the communities in Canada that I or a member of VERY large extended family have lived in there are always walk in clinics. You may have to wait for a little bit in the office but we aren't clogging our ER's. Having worked for a company that required me to travel to the US quite frequently for a couple of years there was one thing I never left home without.... my extra health insurance when out of country. Too many aquaintances have had bad experiences with your hospitals while visiting even for a couple of days.
As I said our system has some problems but I would not trade it for yours.

        • Posted By: seattle_10 @ 11/03/2008 8:32:11 PM

So what is your system to provide health care to 41 million Americans that cannot afford it? Emergency treatment is not cost effective and too little too late. The difference between providing screening and preventative health and the cost of emergency room visits is astronomical. Part of the reason why our medical insurance is so high is that we have to pay for those uncovered emergency visits and treatment. Additionally, we have to pay for the outrageous liability insurance doctors have to pay which also results in tons of unnecessary tests (and additional strains on a strained system). Education for doctors should also be paid to anyone who can keep moving forward in school, not just those who can find funding. This way, we reduce the cost of becoming a doctor and reduce the liability for being a doctor to make their lower pay much more equitable. Kinda like how they do it in the rest of the civilized world... All I know is that our system is pretty lame when compared to the results of the rest of the first (and some of the second) world. You can scream about great our system is, but you can only say that it is the best for a select group of people. The whole arguement about people streaming in from Canada is simply not true. Some people do come here for elective surgery or to find a specific doctor, but we don't see hoards storming the border like is often insinuated.

To respond to your arguement about what procedures will be covered (lasik etc), you have a valid arguement. That is where the people need to stand in and make those choices.

RL One last post befor we vote. and it's for you. Lying here just now, I was going through the arguments we witnessed these past days, and I can understand where just about everyone was coming from, why they'll vote the way theey will. All but one. I guess I won't get to understand why you're going to vote for John McCain. It just occured to me that you never did say. You have lots of great math, you have great morals, you have plenty of reasons not to vote for either candidate, but you never did say exactly why you're going to vote for John McCain. You've heard our arguments here, no doubt many others elsewhere. But still, this late in the game, you have no good arguments to support your belief that John Mccain should be our next president. None. Zip. Nada. and so I began to wonder why you even came here. Why is that RL? Never mind. At this point in the game, I don't think I want to know. I think...I think the respect that I gained for you earlier today, is now gone. Oh your a real smart guy alright, knowledgable, great ethics. It's just that the way you've decided to decide who to vote for, well..just leaves a bad taste in my mouth., cuz here's the thing. Were I you, a fence sitter if ever there was one, sittin there on the fence as you are, I think... no, I know that I would use my vote in a way that mattered. I would look at this lousy choice and say, "How could I do some good with this vote?" and then, I would vote along with the millions of Americans , who have a newfound hope in their hearts, and I would hope that my vote would help them to realize that hope. Know why? Cuz the other choice is to vote with a lot of PO'd republicans, who hate John McCain, but simply would never vote for a democrat, or in many cases, a black man.... Didn't I read somewhere that you despise racism?... People who understand that their party has run us into the ground, but will stubbornly vote for McCain anyway, just because he's "a republican"....A lot of people have a lot of reasons to go one way or the other here RL. Some are hopeful, positive, with a reemerging love for their country. Others are just PO'd, negative, and have no hope that McCain will do any better than Bush, but they'll vote for him anyway. That's a shame! Give it some thought RL. Who's vote do you want to cancel? Mine? Or perhaps Mya's, Mya who's kid is on his way over. How about my 86 year old mother, who has been a dyed in the wool republican for sixty five years, but is going to walk three blocks tomorrow to vote for Obama because, her words, " I have hope again." ...I don't know bud. I was beginning to like you. I think...no. I know. I've changed my mind. You and I are done now.

Hi Gleeson, you made me laugh! Not that what I think you wrote is laughable, but because I go to bed at night and mull all this discussion over too! Redlabel has told us that he has thick skin, so if ever there was anyone whose intellect I think you could make this appeal, and challenge on their McCain vote, it is Redlabel. I personally know three types of of people voting for McCain. (Although the majority of people I know, including relatives, throughout this great country, are voting for Obama) The profile: One person is a true-blue republican and will never vote another way until there is no more America. (Oh, she is a racist too) Two others are racists, a liberated woman, my age, who does not agree with McCain's policies & claims to love and admire Collin Powell who was the key speaker at a week long Anthony Robbins conference she paid $4000 to join. And a 70 year old man who I am especially ashamed of. They all also believed the Muslim fear tactic for over a year, regardless of facts to refute it....and spread this garbage via email, among other lies....to me too! (Did I tell you I have black and Muslim friends?) The other is a pro-lifer, who will only ever vote for someone who agrees on this. I am related, and intimately acquainted, to all of them. I have also heard the most inane, illogical dance as they have all tried to dance around the racism. As IF it hasn't been spewed out overtly, then more covertly my whole life, as to do so has become extremely political incorrect here in SoCal. They slip too, I mean, around me! Did I tell you how much I hate racism and hate? Here's an example: "I trust and respect Colin Powell, I wish he was more involved in our national security, Collin Powell is the best statesman for the job, but I feel safer with McCain." Hellooooo? She has a degree like me, was in upper management in Corporate America, and knew nothing about the tech industry she lead.....she hired and relied on and consulted with her experts! But she was a talented "leader!" Hello? I've known her my whole life. She IS a racist, and gets worse with age. She also can't tell you one thing about Obama that isn't on fox news. And, she blew up at me and yelled at me in a restaurant when she asked me who I was voting for? Not thinking I was walking into a landmine, I said I have always favored Obama..... Oh...I didn't get to finish that sentence when she flew into a rage and made a scene. This is probably why, even though I don't agree with Redlabel and StarNobel, I feel they have been exceptionally civil throughout our passionate debate here, and that gives me comfort about some Republicans.

      To Gleeson, Part 2

I hate war, I've read numerous scholars on the issue about Iraq.....and bottom line, it wasn't about BinLaden, it was about having a strategic position in the middle east....and the oil. Also, I have better than a layperson's understanding of economics, and historically you can find that we make a war when we need to increase jobs and boost production. That makes me ill.

WE have to remember that war kills our American Children. It should never be undertaken lightly, nor when it is a last resort should it be engaged in so shabbily. I don't care about win/loose. Look at that same attitude McCain has and apply it to Vietnam. Look at all those lives lost because we didn't retreat. MY Son enlisted, my only child, because of the hype and the money promises....they got him in high school, behind my back. Okay, yes, I am proud of him and I respect him and his choices. However, not for one minute do I want MY child's life used in vain, in a war I do not believe we should have started, and not in a badly run war where our troops don't even have all the protection they should, nor all the resources they deserve when they come home. McCain's demeanor and hot-headedness scare me more than his other policies. I do not want a McCain at the trigger.

Okay my Dear, I'll get off my soapbox. I am so excited and on the edge of my seat. For the first time I care, I mean I really, really, really care.

GO OBAMA & BIDDEN! GODSPEED AHEAD!

Yes Rexy, I want to second that. To everyone here, while we don't agree on who or how to solve the problems, at least we all agree the problems need solutions. Regardless of who wins tomorrow, I am comforted to see so much passion, interest and thought about our country. So, Republicans, Democrats, Independents, thank you all for teaching me and broadening my own perspectives.

Gleeson, Rexy, Redlabel, StarNoble, et al, my sincerest regards to all of you.

Gleeson: I hope you feel better soon!

Redlabel: Thank you for your kindness, and thank you also for your service to our country. Are you an Officer in the Air Force?

StarNoble: I noticed that you wrote that you were in grade school just 10 years ago? That makes you about, what, 22ish? As a mom of a 22 year old, I just want to say, you go girl! I know we don't agree on policy, but as strange as this might sound to you, I am all for more young people becoming involved in the running of our country. This I find exceptionally admirable. I'm sorry you've inherited a mess that will effect you for years.

    Rexy: Thank you too!

I'll leave you with this oldie: A mind is like a parachute, it can only function properly when it is open.

    God Bless Everyone, Mya

P.S. This blog now has to load every post, which has grown, in order to function, so it is bogged down all the time. Easier to cut & paste text from an email page or doc page. Firefox browser is working 50% better than Explorer.
