I appreciate the link to the Washighton Post article, but lets not forget that this article was written by Alan D. Viard, Alex Brill of the American Enterprise Institute which happnes to be a big player in President Bush's 2nd term. Although it offer another opinion among many, it is just that, an opinion.

"AEI has emerged as one of the leading architects of the second Bush administration's public policy.[2] More than twenty AEI alumni and current visiting scholars and fellows have served either in a Bush administration policy post or on one of the government's many panels and commissions"

As a 24 year old voting for the second time, I am so shocked by the filth that comes from older folks in this country. I mean I am young and in a whole lot of ways I may be unreasonable, but when I hear people who are supposed to be the grown-ups act like children when their candidate starts falling behind in the polls, it really reveals this country for what it is. For god's sake, act like an adult. Name calling and spreading rumors does not really seem like the way to go. Policy differences are fine but bigoted hate speach have no place. My generation is the one paying for your retirement with no one in line to pay for mine. We are the ones who are going to have to solve the energy independence issue. If you are old and ignorant, do your kids a favor and stay home on the 4th. It is time to move this country into the future and that is done with a vote for Obama/Biden.

    • Posted By: granny74145 @ 10/29/2008 2:56:25 PM

It's the younger generation such as yourself that gives this older woman hope in the future!!!! My grandchildrens futures are at stake! I pray that they can be more enlightened than the old farts running the country right now. I have mixed race grandchildren and I do believe that is the way of the future!! No time for stupidity or racism!! The real race issue here should be the human race and what's best for all. Who would Jesus pick? Would he not be called a socialist in todays world? Probably!!!!

We don't stop hearing about Rezco, Ayres and any other person that may have spent more than two minutes with Barack Obama... How about the huge amount of time that John McCain has spent with Charles Keating who swindled America out of BILLIONS of dollars. How about his friend G. Gordon Liddy who is a conservative sanctioned terrorist. How about his truly patriotic divorce... Or his patriotic, "Country First" flight path in Italy when he clipped powerlines cutting power to 1,000's of citizens. I am also sure that you Republican idealogues also think that Warren Buffet is a socialist... The arguments wouldn't hold any water at all if they weren't directed at an American public that has been successfully dumbed down in the last 28 years.

    • Posted By: Jaray24 @ 10/29/2008 1:54:30 PM

By saying Racism, you are the only one be Racist. Yes there are people who will look at the two Pres. Canidates and say I'm not voting for him because he's black/white, and there will be those who say I'm voting for him because he's white/black.
I do believe most people will look past that and see who will do the best, based on their past expereinces, and knowledge, not skin color. Heck, if McCain all of a sudden got a sunburn in the AZ sun would people not vote for him because he's red? Grow up the world has changed, and stop using RACE as a excuse.

Just saying maybe you should research how we ended up in this debacle...
The current economic problem started in 1995 when Bill Clinton Signs Repeal of Glass-Steagall.
Since then Regulation on the Banking industry has been proposed 5 times since 2000. One of the main defenders and stop blocks to so mentioned reforms was led by Barny Frank who made accusations that the country had unfair lending policies to minorities. The race card! Please make sure that your opinion is not thrown out as facts or choose a blog that is slanted to your side. Educate on facts not opinion.

The Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000 or CFMA (H.R. 5660 and S.3283) is United States federal legislation which repealed the Shad-Johnson jurisdictional accord, which had banned single-stock futures in 1982. The legislation also provided certainty that products offered by banking institutions would not be regulated as futures contracts.

      3 H.R. 4577

This act was incorporated by reference into H.R. 4577, an omnibus spending bill. It was passed by the 106th United States Congress and signed by President Bill Clinton on December 21, 2000; the legislation thus became law as a part of H.R. 4577 - Public Law 106???554, §1(a)(5).

The act has been cited as a public-policy decision significantly contributing to Enron's bankruptcy in 2001 and the much broader liquidity crisis of September 2008 that led to the bankruptcy filing of Lehman Brothers and emergency Federal Reserve Bank loans to American International Group[1] and to the creation of the U.S. Emergency Economic Stabilization fund.

        History...
The "Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000" (H.R. 5660) was introduced in the House on Dec. 14, 2000 by Rep. Thomas W. Ewing (R-IL) and cosponsored by Rep. Thomas J. Bliley, Jr. (R-VA) Rep. Larry Combest (R-TX) Rep. John J. LaFalce (D-NY) Rep. Jim Leach (R-IA) and never debated in the House.[2]

The companion bill (S.3283) was introduced in the Senate on Dec. 15th, 2000 (The last day before Christmas holiday) by Sen. Richard Lugar (R-IN) and cosponsored by Sen. Peter Fitzgerald (R-IL) Sen. Phil Gramm (R-TX) Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) Sen. Thomas Harkin (D-IA) Sen. Tim Johnson (D-SD) and never debated in the Senate.

Given the above-stated chronology, it would appear that the House and Senate versions of the bill were introduced just prior to the Christmas holiday in December of 2000, following George W Bush's (first) election (in November of 2000), while then-President Clinton was serving out his final days as President. The bill was never debated by the House or Senate. The bill by-passed the substantive policy committees in both the House and the Senate so that there were neither hearings nor opportunities for recorded committee votes. In substance, it appears that the leadership of the Republican-controlled Senate and House incorporated the deregulation of credit default swaps into an omnibus budget bill (without hearings or recorded votes)at a time when the outgoing president was in no position to veto anything.

The question is who do you blame? I say the person/ party who INTRODUCED the bill in the first place.

The banking industry had been seeking the repeal of the 1933 Glass-Steagall Act since the 1980s, if not earlier. In 1987 the Congressional Research Service prepared a report which explored the case for preserving Glass-Steagall and the case against preserving the act.[1]

The bills were introduced in the U.S. Senate by Phil Gramm (R-Texas) and in the U.S. House of Representatives by Jim Leach (R-Iowa). The third lawmaker associated with the bill was Rep. Thomas J. Bliley, Jr. (R-Va), Chairman of the House Commerce Committee from 1995 to 2001. [2] On May 6, 1999, the Senate passed the bills by a 54-44 vote along party lines (53 Republicans and one Democrat in favor; 44 Democrats opposed).[3] On July 20, the House passed a different version of the bill on an uncontested and uncounted voice vote. When the two chambers could not agree on a joint version of the bill, the House voted on July 30 by a vote of 241-132 (R 58-131; D 182-1) to instruct its negotiators to work for a law that ensured that consumers enjoyed medical and financial privacy and also "robust competition and equal and non-discriminatory access to financial services and economic opportunities in their communities" (i.e. protection against exclusionary redlining) [4] [5] The bill then moved to a conference committee to work out the differences between the Senate and House versions. Democrats agreed to support the bill after Republicans agreed to strengthen provisions of the anti-redlining Community Reinvestment Act and address certain privacy concerns; the conference committee then finished its work by the beginning of November.[4] [6] On November 4, the final bill resolving the differences was passed by the Senate 90-8 [7] and by the House 362-57.[8] This legislation was signed into law by Democratic President Bill Clinton on November 12, 1999.[9]

Eveyone needs to stop listening to the people running for office because you're getting only part of the truth. Short of a complete miracle, Obama's going to be the next president. That one's not even worth arguing.

Obama's tax cut plan is really going to hurt the economy, mainly becuase of how the cuts will be funded and who is going to take the hit on it. Tax cut's really don't matter unless the money's going to make it back into the economy. The real damage comes from increased capital gains taxes, social security tax, and the fact that his tax cuts don't promote economic growth.

Here's a great article on how this will hurt our country.

I wonder where that MBA came from if you think a redistrobution of wealth is the right answer for a democratic nation.

      • Posted By: Rebel9668 @ 10/29/2008 2:37:56 PM

Open your eyes and see that any tax is a redistribution of wealth. By taxing the rich less, Bush has redistributed more wealth to the rich who didn't need it in the first place. Why should I, as a working individual who isn't wealthy pay more percentagewise than someone who makes more than I do and has the easy life while I struggle to keep body and soul together? I'm sorry, but your take on wealth redistribution is not valid to me. As a proud blue collar working American, I am proud to pay my fair share of taxes to help support this contries needs and infrastructure, however, I find it shameful that the superrich don't see any point in paying their fair share. They made their money in this country, they should help support this country. If they want to move their money overseas and their jobs I say fine, but they should face a steep tax and heavy tarrifs for anything they try to ship back here to try and get me to buy so they can have even more.

With this Wall Street & credit/housing crisis, I'm sure there are a lot of people with an MBA in Economics who are feeling a little stupid now.

Greenspan got a Ph.D. in Economics from NYU and look how his policies turned out.

Economics is one of those fields of human study that should be grouped with psychology, phrenology, palmistry, astrology, and alchemy.

    THE GREAT BUSH DEPRESSION
I follow an economist named Bob Proctor. He has called the top and bottom of every market crash since the 70s correctly.
He perfectly predicted the current meltdown and the picture he paints about what will happen next
is terrifying. He thinks it will be worse then the great depression.
The banks in the U.S. are going under one after the other. Countrywide ,Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch , Fanny and Freddy Mae ,AIG
The government took them over because they are bankrupt. Even with the goverment nationalizing hundreds of billions of dollars in debt the stock market is crashing
the credit markets are frozen and all of us may suffer beyond anything seen in generations
McCain just like Bush " doesn't understand the economy".
That not just my opinion its his own words. Not only does he not understand how to fix it but he does not understand how its been broken.
It is no surprise that he doesn't. The people that make up these securities use quantum mathematical models very few people understand.
Bush and McCain both can take the credit for this mess since they helped deregulate the laws that were protecting us.
Bush's economic advisor Phil Graham wrote the deregulation bill that allowed banks to take huge risks with all of our future.
Now, Phil Graham is the head of McCain's economic policy. He is also McCain's choice for the next secretary of the treasury.
No one in this country can afford for that to happen. The last time Bush met with his economic advisors was in March. He was the last to know somthing was wrong. Phil Graham had the guts to say that we are in a mental recession after he helped create the worst economy meltdown in our lifetime. Check out this link to the truth http://my.barackobama.com/keatingvideo
It will take the best and brightest minds in the world to get us out of this nightmare. As bad as Bush has done, McCain would be
even more destructive because things are in much worse shape. The next president will not inherit a budget surplus like Bush did but a crashing economy and a 11,600,000,000,000 (trillion) dollars deficit. Most of it Bush created and it will take decades to pay it back.
If you do what you have always done then you will get what you have always got.
When it comes to policy Bush and McCain are the same 90 percent of the time.
So why are the polls even close then ?
Mccains team just said they no longer want to talk about the economy.Instead they would like to spend time talking about obama
which means running the biggest smear campaign in history.
They think they can just tell you lies and you wont be smart enough to see through it
Let's teach him we are smarter than that
Stand up and hold them accountable
Bush isn't on the ballot this year but his policies are
    Elect Obama Biden 2008

Check out this video of sarah palins interview and ask your self if she understands what she is talking about.

I agree with everything you so eloquently said. Some of the people in these posts have their heads in the sand, and refuse to see the truth. I CANNOT imagine where McCain's mind was when he picked Palin to be his VP. If some of you people are scared of Obama, think about this woman being "that close" to be our President. Really.....stop and think about it. When asked to be McCain's running mate, she should have thought long and hard about what she was about to accept. But instead, she gave no thought to it at all, and exposed herself to be the opportunistic fake she really is. Please, get your heads out of the sand.

No matter your political bent, considering the historical predisposition for political party change, coupled with the current fractured state of the Republican party and the well deserved backlash against the Bush Administration on its mismanagement of the Iraqi War, it was fairly certain that the Democratic nominee would be in the lead for this election. I agree that the platform of Obama is another tasty dose of bread and circus. My only problem with his candidacy is that he seems to be in profession to be elected, and not to lead. He wears his title, but has introduced very little legislation in the areas he is campaigning for now, spending most of his time on the campaign trail. So he sounds good on paper, and from the podium, but I am concerned he is a demogogue ala H L Mencken who defined the term as "one who will preach doctrines he knows to be untrue to men he knows to be idiots."

    • Posted By: sakamuni @ 10/29/2008 2:35:04 PM

this is so true for all politicans, not just obama!
my choice, whoever shows more intelligence and a bit of sincerity and unwavering and with a certain grace to deal with both domestic and foreign politicans is better suit for the job.

Nice poem but too bad your lying. Congrrats on making over 250K a year but you represent a tiny fraction of the country and nobody cares if you can't afford that 4th car you had your eye on. Why is it now socilaism when he will be restoring the taxes that were in place just nine years ago? I don't remember the cries of socialism then. Could it be that you are losing in the polls and are now desperate? No that can't be it. Maybe it's because your candidate has zero new ideas. Maybe?

    • Posted By: jreed61 @ 10/29/2008 2:21:47 PM

Why does anyone think that MORE TAXES is any answer? It is neither socialism nor is it necessary. COME on people, nine years ago we all paid more taxes, because the government was LESS efficient. I think the common cry should be LESS TAXES and LESS GOVERNMENT. Liberals all want less Big Brother, therefore smaller Government! Or is that just an excuse for not wanting people going through YOUR personal background?

NO matter who you vote for, DEMAND less taxes, Less Big Government and more accountability. But with both of these two Senators, we have seen too much of "Go with the Flow" - think for yourselves America! MAybe in 4 years, we'll actually come up with a candidate who truly is a "maverick" or a "changer". But this year we're stuck with these two CLOWNS.

      • Posted By: granny74145 @ 10/29/2008 2:31:54 PM

Yes, by all means, demand less taxes!!! Then because of less funding, the schools can rot, the highways and bridges can fall apart, the police dept., and fire departments will all be cut back, so when the next disaster hits, whether nature or other, there will be no roads to take to get there, and no first responders to help!!!
