This is all nice and dandy, but it's not 1962 we are very dependent on oil and the Russians could easily throw us into bankruptcy simply by cutting off a few oil pipelines. I hope Obama is president then maybe we might not try to drive our tanks into Moscow. Georgia is an irritant to Russia we would do well to let Russia do what it wants there - just like they did nothing when we invaded Iraq.

    Response to Coventry-
Where is the heck did you come with your analysis, from Rush Limpbaugh?

Dude, you are crazy if you think the Russians are behind the U.S. in the quality of armaments! In fact, the Russians are second in sales to the U.S. of advanced technology for armaments. Russia has advanced cruise missiles and only needs to get within 200 miles of the target.

Russia is sending a fleet to Venezuela for a port call and pondering placing TU-95 Bearcat and TU-160 nuke bombers on the Island of Cuba! These bombers fly twice as fast as the B-52 and B1B???s. This would be fitting since the ???NATOUS??? has been intent on BMD in Poland and Czech Republic???

The Russians can match the U.S. or take simple counter measures in a heads up fight. Unless the U.S. decides to call in all of it???s bought friends under the umbrella of ???NATOUS???!

You go ahead and suit up if you want war with Russia or take a chance and sit in your living room watching the Russians fire a missile that, you read was in disarray!

The cold war never ended for Bush and the neocons. If the cold war had ended there woul have been no expansion of NATO into Eastern Europe and then into the Caucussus, followed by an ABM system in Poland, Checkz Republic and plans to put one in Georgia. Madness!
The West, led by the US is the aggressor. They bombed Yugoeslavia, Iraq and Afghanistan. The US has invadedinvaded Panama, grenada and all the above mentioned countries.

    The West ,

Great article! Message to those who don't know that Histroy repeats itself: more people ignore this 4th Reich, more powerfull and scary will Russia get; Muslim Fundamentalizm and Al Qaeda are dwarfed by Russian Autocracy - not since Hitler anyone tried to make such a blzy move - invade another country and tell the world - got f*** youselves! What's really scary is that Russia made Europe dependent on the ENERGY, no wonder nobody has any balls to stand up to Putin! I'm a democrat by I miss Reagan! He would have said Mr. Putin - get your troops out of Georgia, or we will fast-track them to NATO and then you'll have to deal with us!

The ignorance and outright lying of this article are breathtaking. Russia did not "invade" Georgia in an act of "unchecked aggression." It came to the defense of South Ossetian citizens after Georgia launched an attack on Tskhinvali. And when you bemoan the West's "weak response," what, exactly, would you have "the West" do? Provoke a nuclear war? Your cheerleading for a "New Cold War" is sickening and scary.

What you see on TV is a product of Belgium PR agency, who staged many photo and video presentation of current conflict. Same people appear on different pictures at different locations. Ask yourself where is all fair reporting gone? People, wake up. Russians paid with 20.000.000 lives to defeat Hitler. Russians would never go for this or any other war just to invade the other country. Its a fact that Georgian started first. Georgian operation "Clean Field"( what a perfect name ) was designed to take over Tshinvali, quickly move north and block the tunnel that connects South and North Ossetia to prevent Russian forces to move in and save thousands of their own Citizens. Russia answer to Georgia is under and not over proportional. If they want to take over the entire Georgia, they would of done that in a first day. Saakashvili is criminal and lets see how the ordinary Georgians will respond to his actions.

A new cold war might not be that bad. The world would probably be a safer place.

  • Posted By: ks2008 @ 08/19/2008 3:47:53 PM

Actually, a new cold war might not be a bad idea. The world might be a more peaceful place.

  • Posted By: nahummer @ 08/19/2008 3:43:37 PM

While it may not be exactly the 'new cold war', it does bear a lot of similarities, it's just the West has a bigger chunk of Eastern Europe under the NATO umbrella. It'll be interesting...

Reports on how the South Ossetians militias acts during their occupation in some parts of Georgia with-in the finger tips of the Russians Miltary demonstrate their trainings and moral; un-civilized moral, looters, their core values doesn't fit to great military leadership, their commanders & generals does not recognized and respect the chain of command up to Moscow, or what the old saying... "what ever the tree is... same as the fruits". Trusting the leadership in Russia and their old thinking military leaders is the most delicate political question at this point. Russia can only be trusted when new generation of leadership rises that have respect and aspired by laws and constitution that promotes individual rights and justice through the courts system that does not control by any politicians.

The Russians protected those animals b/c it gives them Plausible deniability afterwards when someone has to answer for all the unarmed civilian murders on top of the looting and destruction that took place too. There's no other reason to have included those militias in their invasion of the country aside from allowing them to commit atrocities against the civilian populous while the 'Peace Keepers' protected them.

Conspiracy theory time: Did the US nudge Georgia to act against Russia in Ossetia in order to get an agressive response out of Russia in order for the US to announce the Poland missle deal without raising too many eybrows? That would be exrodinarily Machiavellian, and a true cold war tactic.

[It seems to me that Polish based missles could pretty much only be used against Russia. They sure wont stop an Iranian missle lobbed at Israel]

    • Posted By: Akmatic @ 08/19/2008 1:53:37 PM

They're only good enough to hit very basic outbound missiles and even then you're looking at something hovering around a 70% rate of success against planned targets that DO NOT include multiple warheads and other security measures. Russia being worried over these is rather silly if you have an understanding of the technologies in question.

But judging from the amount of 2nd hand English grammar in these posts, most of your will disagree.

2000 civilians died in Tskhinvali for several hours cause of Georgian attak. Are children, and old men separatists? Russia is not an angel, but its duty is to protect its citizens. About 80% of population in South Ossetia are Russian citizens think about it. What would US do If its civilians died for nothing?

I am glad to see alot of folks have finally seen the truch of the current administration but least not forget that russia is now angel in the big picture here also.

Dear ladies & gentlemen, i'm from Russia. I first was very hurt, than angry at Americans when listening all that interpretations given to Russia???s actions, perceiving complete ignore of war???s stimulus - Georgia's attack. I thought to speak no in English any more to my American co-workers (let them improve their Russian), to say them all that I think of them all. But now I come to idea that separation is one of main causes of fool and wicked suspicions (I mean among usual people). Ignorance and separation makes us being deceived and manipulated. We know not too much of each other cultures and history, and what is worse ??? we do not suppose it important to give notice to them before interpret each others actions. We are CLOSED to unexpected information, WE DON???T WANT ADMIT FOR TRUTH TO BE A BIT WIDER THAN OUR PRESENT INTELLIGENCE. We only want to know what matches our attitudes, formed spontaneously often, without being conscious first and than analyzed. So, dear Americans (usual civilian, who use TV and net to get info) may be it is better for us leave our countries from time to time (or at least be more open to different info) to make real acquaintance to different people and to see with our own eyes, to get with our own brain what they are dreaming about: what if not of retuning USSA? ??? would we be disappointed too much about such revelation?; and what are their plans for the future - what if not to conquer whole the universe? What if just to live quite, love, have fun with friends, make something good and meaningful in this life? ??? After all life is so short to spend it for fury, hate, suspicious because of somebody???s fool ideas.
