Someone get the author a breathalyizer! I think he's over the limit in all 57 states!

When Obama goes off telepromter he's more entertaining the Bush! Stupid and phony can be a good combination for 4 years of unintentional comedy. If it weren't for the fact that he'll weaken our defenses and turn over control of the military to the UN, destroy the economy by instituting prohibitive income tax rates on the RICH (i.e. EMPLOYERS), and appoint more liberal idiots to the bench I might vote for him just to laugh (if it's legal to do so once we live in Obamaland). On the upside, he's been friends with terrorists his whole life. Maybe he can ask one of his old buddies where Osama is?

It's really funny to see Republicans come here and question claims proven to be false by the same organizations that they use to attack Obama. The tax thing is what really bugs me. I'm convinced that Republicans go into a sort of trance-like state during election year where they just walk around mumbling "tax and spend baby killing liberal" regardless of the facts or topic at hand. They're the zombies of the right, just falling in line to spread false attacks. They're oblivious to the fact that the economy's gone downhill, Afghanistan is deteriorating, Bin Laden is even more protected than ever, and our credibility on the world stage is deminishing by the day. All because of a failed Republican agenda. Can't wait til it's all over and these Zombies crawl back into their graves while the real people with brains get to work on fixing their mistakes.

I agree that this election will be largely determined by demographics. I don't think race will play much.

McCain campaign doesn't dare tell the truth. The right wing prints up a bunch of mess about people Obama has known, going in depth into their backgrounds...and all the while it about a bunch of crap Obama had nothing to do with.
McCain was very involved with Keating Five - congressional hearings and all exist to prove it.
Phil Gramm - Mr. Deregulation is still active in the McCain campaign. Alot of you may also remember him from the S&L , Enron days. Kennyboy Lay was a big supporter. Look at what energy deregulation got US citizens. Was it good for you CA? Deregulation also brought you the mortgage crisis.
Randy S. - thought McCain learned about these lobbyist from the Keating Five scandal...guess not. He'll sell out America into more useless war for foreign dollars.

WAH, WAH, WAH, McCain isn't treated fairly. WAH, WAH, WAH. Listen to yourselves. If McCain can't handle scrutiny for his lies, then he can't handle the truth of how much the POTUS position will overwhelm him. Obama has endured all this crap that is spewed on him by McCain surrogates. He has stood the test and perservered. McCain and his supporters make me laugh. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! McCain has yet to present anything with substance to how he would govern. He has changed (flip flopped) on his positions more than I can count on ten toes and ten fingers. McCain is the same old politics of GW BUSH. Maverick, Cowboy... they're all the same. My gun's bigger then your guns. All that does is get us into predicaments that they're too inept to get us out of. Obama is about change. You can take that to the bank.

The underlying article is about Alter whining becuase of his perception that McCain is too negative on Obama

  • Posted By: david-fahey @ 08/19/2008 2:47:24 PM

why doesn't john mccain talk of the tragedy on the USS Forrestal? do those brave men that died in the accident not rate a mention in the career of the senator?

  • Posted By: celeste47 @ 08/19/2008 2:45:41 PM

The question I have is although I appreciate this article -- why isn't the main stream television media stepping up to do their jobs and call a lie a lie.

Part of the reason our country has gotten into the messes we have over the last decade is the media is accountable to no one and they continuously fail to provide the services they were meant to provide to the people of the United States.

Why doesn't the media tell the truth and be more fair and balanced? Yes Obama gets more media coverage, but does anyone in the media pay attention to the research stating that 74% of that coverage is negative while on 48% is so for McCain? That is a shame considering that McCain has messed up so often that we as a nation should be afriad to put yet another idiot in the highest seat in the nation.

Media please do your job and inform us of the thruth!

Wow, not surprising that Newsweek would take this stance. Care to mention Obama falsehoods or what factcheck.org really is or why the media will not dig into Obama's past? Obamalujah baby!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjelN50Bux4

Obama should just debate Senator McCain until he drops out, we all know that McCain can and will win any debate between Obama and McCain.

    • Posted By: ozarkajuice @ 08/19/2008 2:32:46 PM

wow being sarcastic is funny, but you didnt have to tear apart mccain like that. but yes obama FTW.

  • Posted By: Cloudosmoke @ 08/19/2008 2:31:01 PM

Here's how McCain is working it. McCain will keep hammering his lies until its so far in that it looks reliable which will dissuade many people from voting because of his lies and their lack of knowledge. Hence, McCain is already practicing totalitarian propagandic apathy system. Suppress the votes, that's the only way to win.

Now they want to buy large parts of the amazon to drill... It is a environemental disaster waiting to happen.
Contact the ambassy of Peru and say no to american oil companies in the amazon.

    Dear Mr. Alter:

The McCain/Rove/Schmidt falsehoods are nothing more than Mendacity of Despair. Thank you for highlighting the falsehoods from a person who claims to put the country first. Put truth first country will take care of itself.

  • Posted By: RealisticLib @ 08/19/2008 2:21:35 PM

President McCain. Get used to it!

  • Posted By: b1barnes @ 08/19/2008 12:22:38 PM

In the recent month I have been very discouraged in McCain and the ads he has been placing on TV and print. Neither of these guys seems to have the qualities to run a campaign that is based on fact and offering solutions to our nation???s problems. Instead they have nothing to say other than to slander and try and turn the people against the other candidate with false stories and bending the facts to make it seem that the other will ruin the country.

Meanwhile we all forget that Congress has just as big of a part in the running of the country as the President. We need leaders that are interested in the country and not how they will line their pockets. Democrats??? can???t seem to keep their pants on and Republicans can seem to keep their hands out of lobbyist pockets.

Probably the smartest thing I've read on this board so far!

  • Posted By: ApostasyUSA @ 08/19/2008 2:18:48 PM

"As usual, news organizations are deeply afraid to say that one side is more negative than the other. Doing so sounds "unfair." It's much easier, and less controversial, to say that "both candidates" are being negative. That would be "balanced", but also untrue..."

    Right on!!

My guess is Sen. McCain is using the same technique that the Bush administration exercised to great success during its entire tenure: Tell a lie often enough and people believe it's true. Especially when the press is either so woefully uninformed or willfully non-confrontational (or both) that they allow such gaffes to pass unchallenged, while the citizenry is too busy watching "American Idol" to care.

Here...let me just help proliferate the right wing "opinion base" simulacrum:

The economy has made great progress. Obama supporters are welfare sponges. Democrats are traitors. Republicans are patriots. America is admired around the world. The constitution is for weaklings. Everyone to the left of Dick Cheney is a socialist. We now own Mexico and China. The Saudis beg us for more oil. The millions facing foreclosure are whiners. The largest income inequality since the Great Depression is meaningless. Al-Qaeda has been destroyed. Iran has been weakened. Federal spending over the last 8 years has reduced by a trillion dollars. Scientific facts are a liberal conspiracy. 82% who think the country is on the wrong track drink kool-aid. 66% who disapprove of Bush are communists. Upper-income tax cuts during war make sense. The dollar has never been stronger. NAFTA creates jobs. Only greedy poor people and the media bellyache about skyrocketing gas prices. After 8 years of the greatest president of all time, Obama will destroy America.

    Remember:
The media is only as liberal as the giant corporations that own it.

  • Posted By: Iconoblaster @ 08/19/2008 12:32:17 PM

Its funny to hear the right wingnut partisans whining about how "biased" and "left-leaning" they think the (which is, after all, corporate-owned, and supported by advertising) media is, especially in response to a fact-based article that anyone can check... and to which they offer no specific criticism, just "liberal biased, against anyone that is conservative". But to this crew, Santa Claus is a Marxist, so what does anyone expect? I'm a registered Republican, but these folks are an embarassment.

    • Posted By: Young Hickory @ 08/19/2008 2:18:09 PM

Iconoblaster, you are a reasonable man. I think McCain is a reasonable man as are most Republicans. Unfortunately, once someone is nominated for GOP presidential candidate they are not in charge anymore. They sell their principles to the Republican attack machine to get elected. Once they submit then it effects their ability to unite and lead the country and govern after elected. McCain cannot just smear Obama and expect us Democrats to forgive and forget once he is in office and unfortunately I think he will win since these tactics have been successful in the past.

  • Posted By: ozarkajuice @ 08/19/2008 2:12:38 PM

Obama should just Debate Mccain till he just drops out. we all know that Obama can win in a debate between Mccain and Obama.

  • Posted By: m.nolan @ 08/19/2008 2:06:23 PM

    Alter's still staying on message

  • Posted By: Cloudosmoke @ 08/19/2008 2:04:03 PM

McCain has a crash course in failure. His plan for America is failure. He supports pork projects. He supports failed health care systems. McCain already has wealth so he has no idea what the average American goes through. GOP'ers insist on electing the out of touch politicians into office. Gluttons for punishment.

  • Posted By: Volkmeister @ 08/19/2008 1:03:39 PM

Mr. Alter, do you realy believe that if Obama is elected that taxes for middle income and small business owners will not go up? How foolish are you. Obama wants to nationalize health care and he must pay for it some how. He has proposed billions in new entitlement spending and raising the minimum wage a lot higher, all resulting in new taxes and higher prices for food and other products. That's essentially a new tax on the people. He opposes new drilling, which causes local supplies to diminish, and that results in paying for more expensive foreign oil and its transportation costs. Obama's policies will increase taxes of businesses which provide jobs to Americans, resulting in layoffs and some business failures. Wake up! Obama is advocating the same old Democrat tax and spend policies that don't work. Just because McCain is point it out in the campaign does not make it unfair. When are you, Mr. Alter, going to write a similar article exposing Obama's misstatements about McCain? Huh? We'll be waiting until hell freezes over for that one.

    • Posted By: summer4077 @ 08/19/2008 2:03:30 PM

Well, I guess we could divert the TRILLIONS being spent in Iraq and Afghanistan, benefitting not American citizens but foreign hostile countries, to the American public. Gee, what a thought! Spend AMERICAN taxes on AMERICAN people! And the billions on programs proposed by Obama would still be less than the trillions spent overseas, so really we'd be saving money! Healthy Americans and more money in the bank...win-win.

  • Posted By: Volkmeister @ 08/19/2008 1:34:39 PM

Obama is the salvation and saviour of the world. Hillary said that when Obama is elected, the heavens will open and angels will sing. Pelosi said that Obama is a blessing from heaven. Michelle said she propu for the first time in her adult life and that her husband will cure the planet. Mr. Alter says tha McCain's political ads go "too far." Give us a break! Where is the journalistic analysis of the St. Barack syndrome, Mr. Alter?

    • Posted By: News and Notes @ 08/19/2008 2:02:39 PM

Hillary was being sarcastic (and humorous!)
